Dead Rising was “too Japanese”, says Capcom

Dead Rising was an amazing game when it released back in 2007 – zombies, clowns, who wouldn’t like them? However, developer Capcom claims that it may have been just a little “too Japanese” for the Western crowd.

“The first Dead Rising was built in a very Japanese style”, Capcom’s Shinsaku Ohara told CVG. “We had some help from America, but basically it was all done in a Japan. We wanted to do it better for a Western audience this time.”

“That’s why we’re working with Blue Castle now. They know what they like – and it’s good to have them come up with ideas and it becomes a back and forth thing.

“Together, we’ve come up with crazier ideas than we did in the first game. What we didn’t quite manage in Dead Rising 1 was that it still felt too Japanese. We’re much closer to feeling like a Western game with this title.”

A mix of Western and Japanese gameplay elements doesn’t sound like it’ll harm anyone – well, except the zombies. Let’s just hope that doesn’t mean a lack of ServBot helmets or unlockable Mega Man costumes.

  • I’m not sure if I fully agree with Capcom on this. On one hand, I realise an overtly Japanese style can put off many a Western gamer, however it attracts those who like the style in equal measure. I personally did not think Dead Rising was ‘too Japanese’ at all, in fact I was sure when playing it that it was very compatible with a Western market. Oh well.

PS: Just a heads up, Dead Rising released in 2006 if my memory serves me correctly, not 2007! ^_-

I can see what they mean as being too japanese, you can kinda see it in the advertisements and a lot of the toys in the mall, and some of the costumes and “Face wear” (as seen in the pic above) have that sort of japanese feel to them, but either way it was a great game, and besides, just because its a little japanese styled doesnt people in the west arent gonna pick it up…we just love shooting and slicin zombies :P

    Zombies should develop this game.
