We already know that in-game XMB is supposed to be arriving in the summer. When you might ask? Well only Sony knows that and with their track record, its possible they don’t even know. Rumor has it that we will be getting the PLAYSTATION trophy system (think of the Xbox 360’s achievements) around June 2008.
The rumor from an industry insider is that Sony will be releasing Firmware 2.40 in June around the launch of Metal Gear Solid 4. The new Firmware 2.40 will include some of the first PLAYSTATION trophies or accomplishments.
Some might ask, how will we be getting trophies without Home? Good question. A small tidbit of information that was given by Home Producer, Daniel Hill, during Playstation Day this year was that trophies will be available in the XMB. “They have to be,” he said. A 2D version of your trophies will compliment their 3D versions in Home. This allows for quick access to what you have achieved without having to launch Home itself. With all that being said, it is quite possible that we will get that 2D counterpart before Home is officially released.
If this new firmware hits in June as the insider has mentioned, we may see trophies and in-game XMB soon enough. That is unless Sony plans to have more than one firmware release this summer, which I doubt since there latest stance on firmwares are “take more time and incorporate more features.” Also note that if the firmware does come out in June with these new features, expect to only see first party titles incorporate the trophies initially as they will get the SDK kits first.
