■ Characters
Yomawari: Midnight Shadows is an action game in which players take on the role of two young girls and explore an ominous night town. The story will shift between the points of view of each girl as you progress.
Yui
Haru’s close friend. She has a cheerful personality. When coming back from the fireworks display, she gets separated from Haru and ends up wandering about the night town. She has two puppies.
Haru
Yui’s close friend. She has a quiet personality, but summons her courage and throws herself into the night town in search of Yui.
Chako
■ Push Things—Expand the Scope of Exploration
A new element in Yomawari: Midnight Shadows, if a “hand” marker appears when you approach something you can interact with, then you can push the targeted object.
Using this action, you can move wooden boxes and create stepping stones to get past blockades in the road.
Even places where it may seem impossible to pass through, you can progress by pushing these obstacles out of the way, so be sure to explore all over.
■ Interact—Investigate Every Nook and Corner of the Night Town
The entire town is wrapped in the darkness of the night, and the girls must rely on the light of their flashlights to proceed.
On the roadside, the girls will come across things that can be interacted with, which by interacting with can further expand the scope of exploration.
—If you find something that can be interacted with, a “?” marker will appear over the character’s head.
—If you get closer to the target, an “!” marker will appear over the character’s head. With this, you can take action or pick up “lost items.”
■ Lost Items—Necessary to Advance Exploration
The girls will be able to carry the “lost items” they pick up alongside the road. These lost items can be thrown, placed, or worn.
Because these lost items may be useful in unexpected locations, they are an important element, even in advancing exploration.
■ Charms—Wear Them to Receive Various Effects
As you progress through the story, you’ll obtain items called “charms.”
By putting on charms, you can obtain various benefits, such as being able to hold a lot of pebbles, making your stamina harder to reduce, or running faster.
■ Spirits
Strange “spirits” wander the streets at night.
It is necessary to being discovered by a spirit during your exploration, as many spirits will maliciously attack the girls if found.
If the girls get caught by a spirit, they will not see another night.
Each spirit has its own characteristics. It is necessary to understand a spirit’s traits in order to be able to escape it.
—When a spirit is nearby, the girl’s heart rate will rise and the screen will pound with the sound of her heartbeat.
—It is important to take cover, hide, and wait until a spirit disappears.
Kotowari-sama
A huge spirit that carries a sharp pair of scissors. It makes an ominous noise while endlessly chasing the girls wherever they go.
Heinous Spirit
A spirit who will ambush you on the roadside. He holds a wide blade dripping with blood in his hand.
Baby Soul
Ominous babies that come in herds. They pay no attention to the girls and crawl around in a cluster.
Yomawari: Midnight Shadows is due out for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in Japan on August 24, and for PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and PC in North America and Europe this fall.
