Double Fine Productions has released a new video update for Psychonauts 2 showing what the game will look like when it launches in fall 2018.
Psychonauts 2 is currently in pre-production, meaning that the development team is busy getting everything to a basic level of readiness in order to have everything they need to get going when the full team comes on board. A general outline of the entire game from start to finish needs to be created first, including the story, the locations, and the gameplay systems, powers, abilities, and enemies.
Over the last few months, Double Fine boss Tim Schafer and project lead Zak McClendon have been doing this, and while a full outline of the game is mapped out at a high level, there are still many details to be figured out. The last piece is going to be the worlds themselves, for which the team is brainstorming “dozens and dozens” of ideas “to ensure that only the finest, most surreal, and most surprising mental landscapes are on offer.”
In the video, you’ll see a reimagining of the Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp from the original Psychonauts in Unreal Engine 4. Whispering Rock won’t actually appear in Psychonauts 2, but you’ll get to see an early version of Raz’s movements and abilities in this setting.
Psychonauts 2 is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Mac, and Linux.
