Marvelous has released the latest information and screenshots of Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star, introducing recently confirmed characters Cu Chulainn and Li Shuwen, as well as some new gameplay mechanics.
Get the details below.
■ Characters
Cu Chulainn
- Voiced by: Nobutoshi Canna
- Class: Lancer
- Noble Phantasm: Gae Bolg: Soaring Spear that Strikes with Death
The Child of Light of Ireland. He looks violent, but is actually friendly. Nevertheless, he’ll go all out when it comes to battle. This time, his cursed Crimson Lance Gae Bolg is of the Anti-Army specification.
Li Shuwen
- Voiced by: Kunihiko Yasui
- Class: Assassin
- Noble Phantasm: No Second Strike
A master of Bajiquan, the true essence of a warrior. He is no murderer, but as a result of his skill has killed many of his opponents. He considers an encounter with another warrior a place of mutual readiness and conviction, where death is inescapable.
■ Attack-Type Programs
In the digital realm of SE.RA.PH, not only are there Servants, there are also rulers of the domain known as “Attack-Type Programs” that aim to thwart your invasion. These Attack-Type Programs boast various features and capabilities.
Soldier
Although their ability is by no means high, they’re a close-combat type that swarms in groups. If you’re unprepared, their sheer number may overwhelm you.
Commander
An aggressor and commander-class Attack-Type Program. Its specs are much higher than that of a soldier, and it leads them into battle.
Sniper
An archer-class Attack-Type Program that attacks from a distance. Since it doesn’t fight at close range, you have to close in on it to repel it.
Dreadnought
A large Attack-Type Program that far surpasses others. Since it can prepare its attack without interruption from the little damage it receives, you’ll become the victim of a powerful attack if you approach it carelessly.
Plant
A special Attack-Type Program able to create aggressors. Not only do the aggressors protect the area around him, it can come and invade other sectors, so destroying it should be made a priority.
Recon
An Attack-Type Program that attacks from the air. Its bombardment power isn’t very high, but it’s a troublesome creature that could paralyze you if it hits you.
■ Attribute Attacks and Status Ailments
Attribute attacks are attacks accompanied by an element—fire, thunder, ice, poison, etc.—that can induce a status ailment on the enemy. Some abnormal statuses deal a lot of damage or limit the enemy’s actions, so you should try to use attribute attacks proactively with the aim of inflicting status ailments.
Abnormal states include:
- Poisoned State: Gradually reduces HP.
- Burned State: Increases damage received.
- Shocked State: Unable to attack for a fixed period.
- Frozen State: Unable to move for a fixed period.
It should be noted that enemy attacks and sector traps can also induce abnormal states on the player.
■ New World of the Moon
The three parties of Fate/EXTELLA will battle throughout various areas in the New World of the Moon, such as areas heavily impacted by the effect of its ruler, or areas that reproduce IF possibilities.
Mare Aurum
A Roman-themed area ruled by Nero Claudius. It has a dazzling atmosphere about it, much like Nero herself. There’s also a concert stage, for some reason.
Mare Luxuria
An ancient Kyoto-themed area ruled by Tamamo no Mae. It has a Japanese-style taste, featuring lines of Sakura trees and Shinto shrines, but there’s also a chaotic disco area.
Mare Melum
A world where another Holy Grail War that was once fought has the potential to happen again. It features temples towering over sacred grounds and new urban-esque skyscrapers.
Mare Origo
A world of origin and chaos where the top Servants rule. It features an area resembling a castle garden, as well as a crumbling palace.
■ Map Gimmicks
The opposing party can use various tricks and defense mechanisms to defend against your invasion of the sector.
Tamamo no Mae, for example, can trap Nero’s party within a sector, who won’t be able to escape until all of that sector’s enemies are destroyed.
Gawain has a skill called “Number of the Saints” that increases his power through sunlight. Whether you forcibly beat on Gawain or fight him after rendering his skill useless by taking control of the sectors where he collects sunlight is up to the master (you).
There are also “neutral sectors” that aren’t controlled by any party. If you arrive in a sector before the enemy party, you can gain control of that sector by finding its “Lost Matrix.” To find a Lost Matrix, you’ll need to rely on the noise that it emits as you draw closer to it.
There are also sectors where powerful “Sector Traps” are planted. You can defend against these traps by using Code Cast to cancel its attribute effect just before the trap activates. You can check where Sector Traps are located on the mini-map.
■ Items
You can obtain various items, either as drops from defeated enemies or from item boxes on the map, that will restore your health, increase your Extra Maneuver gauge, or have other effects.
Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star is due out for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in Japan on November 10, and in North America and Europe this winter.
