Coven and Labyrinth of Refrain

Nippon Ichi Software has released the first full-length trailer for Coven and Labyrinth of Refrain, its new dungeon RPG due out for PS Vita in Japan on June 23.

Coven and Labyrinth of Refrain is set in Refrain, a town where there is a cursed underground labyrinth where people cannot survive very long. A certain witch comes along and volunteers to explore the labyrinth. The player is a legendary book called “Youro Rekitei.” Together with the witch, your owner, you’ll challenge the dungeon. The player cannot fight, so the witch will make dolls (which you’ll customize in character creation to form your adventurer party) to fight instead.

    Wait, what?

So like, the battle system is on permanent auto battle then?

    • Member

Nah, you’ll probably be controlling the doll’s actions like party members in any other RPG.

That’s what I’ve been thinking since the last article but that one and this one both emphasize that the player can’t fight.

I mean, I get it if they said the main character but they said the player as in “us” and I thought it was just a misunderstanding the first time but they mentioned it again so I’m skeptical.

        • RedSuisei

That’s a misunderstanding. The “player” is the book, who cannot fight, so you make doll units that you control like normal party members. Think Makai Kingdom.

Cool, I was kind of worried. You never know with NIS, sometimes they experiment with odd questionable gameplay mechanics.

  • DanSmith

Is this game conected with The Witch and the Hundred Knight?

    • DesmaX

Not really. But it seems to have a teaser for TWATHK2 at the end

      • Kaijuu

It’s just a page for crediting the Character Designer and Scenario Director, I believe. Unless they’re announcing something else on 06/23 aside from the game releasing.

        • DesmaX

I think they’ll announce something else there.

I mean, I’m pretty that’s Metallia and the Hundred Knight voice

          • Forty

I think those voices are just from Covens characters. Pretty sure it’s not Metallia and Hundred Knight anyway, Metallia’s JP voice is considerably more abrasive than that.

  • DesmaX

“Hey Gig, how’s your new game going?”

  • chroma816

I almost forgot about this, but it’s really looking good. Most NIS stuff comes over so I’m not worried that we won’t get it, but I hope the wait isn’t too long.

  • MrKappa

Not only is this a NIS game meaning low sales are gonna happen, the gameplay looks weak which means this will definitely bomb.

  • Anontastic

Still hoping NIS brought their A-game with this one. They can make hella good games when they really put their minds to it, and this one’s gonna need something to make it stand out among the ever-growing mass of DRPGs on the Vita.

If Takehito Harada had drawn the monsters as well as the player characters, I’d be all in, though~

  • The Jokester

Hmm well I like DRPG’s so i think i will keep my eyes on this one looks cool

  • croix

i really like their design Character works

  • Seigi no Mikata

Habitually, I’m not fond of NIS games but I must say this one looks pretty interesting. It comes for my birthday, plus.

  • Joey

Hoping for a Western release of this. I’ll probably still import the Japanese LE though. I have a feeling NIS America wouldn’t bring over the 2-disc soundtrack if they brought this over.

  • Uncle Stoopnixie

I really love Takehito Harada his character design is the best in the business.

And as always, love Sato’s music, he has such a recognizable style.

  • ivanchu77

Dat art and music lol, just 8 seconds of the trailer are enough to make clear this is a NIS game

so a dungeon crawler…didn´t they made demon gaze already? that game was great so i´m pretty hyped for this :)

    • Joey

NIS only published that in the West. Demon Gaze was developed by Experience.

  • oldgameswerebetter

it seemed interesting but i’m going to pass, can’t bring myself to play this drpgs where you never see you own characters if not a little portrait

  • El Chromah

For a dungeon rpg which tend to have few objects on the screen, all the graphics are portraits, they could of at least made exploration fields look better. Stranger of sword city looks much better. I’d pick this up only if i’m really bored and there’s nothing to play.

  • Sulaiman AL-BaKr

The music and art are similar to The Witch and the Hundred Knight

    I hope for a port to ps4.
