Sega’s Valkyria Chronicles Remastered for PlayStation 4 opened at over 24,000 sales.

    is 96k good for SMT?

    • shogunknight

Should be. A great start at least, depends on what the sales was for the previous game in comparison

    • May_Patra

It’s only roughly half as much as SMTIV sold in it’s first week sadly. And only about 6k units more than Strange Journey, which was deemed a failure by Atlus. Well, the 3DS isn’t the DS… so not sure what that tells us.

      • Renaldi Saputra

        hmm I see then…
        depends on the percentage sales

        • SgtFrog

according to famitsu weekly ranking they manage to sold around 60-80%

          • Renaldi Saputra

            then it’s doing quite well

      • Aluja

Failure? What, as a game or how it sold?

        • May_Patra

How it sold. Atlus was disappointed with sales for SJ.

  • Paddy Alfan

    lol at number 20.
they made them sound like its a bargain at 5000yen, them overpriced japanese games.

  • shogunknight

Dragon Quest builders (PS3+PS4+Vita) passed 500k units, good

    • http://toucrowmoai.imgur.com/ encogen

Deservedly so. It’s just so nice to play.

      • Elle

        It looks great
        Very relaxing

        • Elvick

So nice to having a building game that’s not hideous beyond believe. Plus RPG woven around in it.

          Like a dream!

    • miyamoto

It is selling way faster than Minecraft PSV. Really can’t wait for the English version

  • DamageCity

Watch it drop next week. SMTIV final, that is.

  • http://Gematsu.com Vayne

The game sales in japan were very good, this is to be expected in a country passionate about games.

  • Mohammed Ahmed

I need more context about smt to see if this are bad or good sales, depends on how much they shipped and how much they were expecting, over all im dissapointed with ps4 sales, we need DQ11

    • quodvadis

Are you new to Media Create?

      • Mohammed Ahmed

i have been following Japanese video games sales for a while now, i know its pretty ok for a console in japan, i guess my exceptions were high

    • Pastmaster

The days of performing 50-60k per week for home console in Japan are long gone. It has a lot to do with less software on the market which has shipped over to smart-devices. Those weird games and shovelwares that attract older and non-gamers are not buying consoles anymore. This is why Sony needs to go back to their huge first party support for home console in Japan they haven’t had since early PS2 days.

      • Mohammed Ahmed

the xbox one is nonexistent in the Japanese scene that why sony doesn’t even bother making exclusives for ps4, at this rate i dont think anything can save consoles for japan maybe when virtual glasses becomes a big thing, but its makes sense when you consider the living conditions in japan(small houses) and to many hours stuck in trains, that why smartphones games are so big

        • Pastmaster

“that why sony doesn’t bother making exclusives for ps4”

Bloodborne, The Last Guardian, New Hot Shots Golf, Gravity Rush 2 and many more in the coming years. Your comment is not valid.

          • Fw89

take your logic out of here

          • Mohammed Ahmed

3 of those games were made because of western audience, they just happend to have japanese devs.

        • Budgiecat

XBox consoles have always been dead in Japan ever since 2002 and even before that with the MSX

The move to lucrative easy profits from smartphones with less production costs as well as a struggling economy is what has hurt console games, as well as many top developers no longer working at/making games at the top name companies..

        • Mk333

I think it’s because FF15 is not out on PS4 yet, many ppl still think it’s not the time to get a PS4. Games that may persuade Japanese (and Asians) to get PS4 this year are FF15 and Yakuza 6 (and maybe DQ11, but some ppl may settle with its 3DS version)

  • Rain

Very disappointed in the weak sales of the unfortunately titled, SMT IV Final. SMT IV sold nearly 200K in its first week, so this is not making me happy. On the good side. Hopefully Atlus changes their attitude and joins the PS4 Master Race so we can finally get a proper SMT game on consoles!

    • Mohammed Ahmed

“proper” so the 3ds games are not good?

      • quodvadis

Depend on your standard. Ever played 3DS?

      • ManagedCorn

For some, it is not like Nocturne so it is automatically bad :0

        • Elle

          It’s boring

          • ManagedCorn

            Here’s your answer.

            • Elle

              ?????

              • ayanami-chan

                he’s just buttbrasted

      • Rain

Nowhere as good as a console HD release would be. I’m 22, I’m getting too old for 240p handhelds.

      • ayanami-chan

It’s no Nocturne but I liked it

    • Pastmaster

Depends on how Persona 5 will perform then maybe P-studio will collaborate with Maniax team on SMTV.

    • easter

Atlus won’t waste all those HD assets they’ve created for P5. It’ll happen, don’t worry.

      • Rain

Yeah, Atlus are the kings of recycling their assets. PS2 had tons of SMT games, so hopefully PS4 will be the same. I need SMT V on consoles in HD.

    • ManagedCorn

It had much more promoting, hype and special editions behind it.

    • ronin4life

Siliconera gave a better overall look at SMT IV Finals sales:
“While Final’s numbers aren’t as impressive as Shin Megami Tensei IV’s, keep in mind that those were pretty exceptional numbers as it was Atlus’ second best-selling title in recent history, just 4,000 short of Persona 4 back in 2008. That said, the 96,349 copies sold is pretty good for a non-main-numbered Shin Megami Tensei title”

      • Rain

Siliconera writers usually reach the most pathetic lows to justify weak sales on Nintendo platforms, and vice versa on Sony consoles. I remember them actually saying Freedom Wars sales were bad yet now they’re praising this lol

        • Slayven19

In this case this is true tho, the majority of atlus games don’t even get 70k out the gate.

      • ChieIsLifeButNaotoisBestWaifu

        silyconera is just a nintenfags

    • OlimacFTW

Yeah. The PS4 master race with a proper console game like VC that sold even less than a handheld RPG in the same week.

      • Elvick

A game that came out on PS3 already… and how well did it original sell on PS3?

Your comment is no better than the one you’re replying too. Both are ridiculous.

        • OlimacFTW

The original game sold 77K, and thanks for your unnecessary answer.

          • Fw89

You don’t have to be so frustrated, you can join us any time you want! There are 40 million of us, in just two years!

      • ayanami-chan

        that’s because it’s a PS3 game, a remaster

      • Rain

A port of a new IP from last gen on a console with 2mil userbase Vs. a new entry in one of the most popular JRPG franchise in Japan history on a handheld with 20mil userbase. Yeah, this kind of logic will get you nowhere in life. VC would’ve sold even less if it was on 3DS.

    • https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVv1lEOaP0rJUQMutGSYgsQ Afarr

Yea. The sales were as high as I was expect. I thought it would break 100,000 at least. I still appreciate Atlus bring some good RPGs to the 3DS. I’m just hoping that SMT IV Final gets localized. As much as I would love to see another console SMT game, I’m glad for their efforts on make the game look nice and stylized on the 3DS.

  • Fighunter

The Wonderful 101 Xboxes sold just as much as that game!
Oh poor WiiU lost 6 sales too. Perhaps its dying gasps are a painful cry for help?

    • Zebimicio

Shortage, but hey trolls love to howl :)

  • quodvadis

Will DQB become an evergreen title like Minecraft? We’ll see.

Personally doubt it since it’s a single player game only, SE really dropped the ball not making it has online mode too. Dunno what they’re thinking.

    • Sunny11

If it had online and Coop, definitely!

    • Pastmaster

I think they hurted the legs when the producer accidentally confirmed DQBII on his twitter account.

    • miyamoto

DBQ sold so much faster and probably will outsell Minecraft no matter how ever green it is.

      • quodvadis

You seen its sales now and Both LTD?

  • Somerandomperson

Games need to be cheaper! Millions of Wallet Die Each Month especially for console gamers(minus Xbox)

    • Mohammed Ahmed

if you get 20000$ a month which is pretty average and if you buy 6 games every month that would 360$, so you would 19640$ for living expenses, games are actually cheap, but its all depends on your salary.

      • Yuntu

20000 a month average? Where do you you live and what do you work as?

        • UMR-10

Judging by his name, I think that the is probably from the Middle East

There are some insane rich people living there

          • Mohammed Allha

I am a middle eastern and believe me we don’t make that much per month lol

            • Elle

              I thought so lmao

            • Mohammed Ahmed

depends where you live, in qatar getting paid 100k is considered being poor. :)

              • Mohammed Allha

Honey i am from qatar lol and my salery is not 80k per month

        • Mohammed Ahmed

I live in morocco, i work in an engineering company, big companies like to outsource to third world countries for cheap labor, are you sure 20k$ is a lot?
from what i read from articles, people in usa get paid 56k a month in average, maybe they meant a year i dont know, but i think anybody can earn that much with a little bit of motivation and hard work, nothing is impossible in this planet

          • Yuntu

20k is definitly not something everyone can earn unless he is blessed with extreme luck. I would say 1k-3k (depending on what you learned etc.) is what the average person can dream of. Those 56k are probably for a year, which still would be extremly high. Hell even from a friend of mine the father is the chief doctor (dunno what the proper english name for that is) of our hospital and at most he has 10k out and that required him to work like 20 years towards a position that high.

Not wanting to start an argument, but I’m just saying.

      • Suraimu

Pretty average? Are you a pimp or something?

      • Mohammed Allha

People who make this much of money are rare 20000$ per month is a lot

        • Aluja

First it’s average, now it’s rare. Make up your mind lol.

          Edit: nvm, different person xD

      • Somerandomperson

        That’s SO MUCH Salary!

  • PuppetMaster

I’m curious how SF V will do for next week.

    • Mohammed Allha

Yeah me too and don’t forget about attack on titans

    • Noctis

      YSO predictions

      01. [PSV] Kan Colle Kai < 240k (average 180k)
      02. [PS4] Attack on Titan < 65k (average 60k)
      03. [PS4] Street Fighter V < 60k (average 50k)
      00. [3DS] Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games < 50k (average 45k)
      _
      00. [PS4/PSV/PS3] Attack on Titan < 130k (average 110k)

      • ayanami-chan

I hope Attack on TItan get’s more than 60k on ps4.

      • PuppetMaster

Eh i doubt that low. SF pretty big in japan and i can see 100k-150k in 1st week.

        • kthanxyousuck

          02. [PS3]Street Fighter IV *(Capcom) PS3; 86,000

No way it’s debuting over 100K and there seems to be hardly any hype around it.

  • UMR-10

Wii U still selling like crap, i thought it was shortage issues?

    • Mohammed Allha

It’s the wii u so selling like crap is part of its brand

      • Mk333

Dude Wii U has a strong presence in Japan. Look at Splatoon, it is always there in the top 20. I’ve been wanting this console but I am reluctant to buy one since the digital sales is tied to your console, on top of that the console and its gamepad are both region locked, and there’s still no updates or hacks to change this yet.

      • Zebimicio

        Troll alert

    • mrgrgr!

still on shortage since december, prolly cautiously restocking

    • Fw89

*sirene* wii u wii u wii u *sirene*

    • https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVv1lEOaP0rJUQMutGSYgsQ Afarr

Bruh. The Japanese were eating up the system. It’s currently on a shortage in Japan, so it’s harder to get one.

  • Pastmaster

I’m not holding my breath for Street Fighter 5 but if it can sell as much as SFIV it’s off to a solid start especially when they are now treating SF as server like Splatoon it could have decent legs in the end but nothing like Nintendo titles. I would be surprised if SF5 did 500k LTD in Japan without Super, Arcade and Ultra versions. This plan is to have unification for all players when they update the gameplay system.

    • Budgiecat

JJBA ASB did 500k in Japan :p

  • kudostoyou

    odin sphere 95k 3 platform
    SMT IV 96k 1 platform

    hmm…

    • Pastmaster

      SMTIV Final – new game
Odin Sphere HD remastered – old game

      Pointless comparisons.

    • ayanami-chan

Odin sphere was a ps2 game tho

    • Fw89

I wish I was smart enough to understand the relationship between number of platforms and sales numbers :(

      • donkey3

A game released on multiple platforms will maximize it’s sales.

        • Fw89

How? Oh, because more possible buyers = selling more, I think I got it! That’s why mgs4 sold 6m in 1 platform and mgs5 sold the same in 5!

          • donkey3

MGS V was the biggest launch in MG history. That 5m was reported a LONG time ago, my friend. The sales probably surpassed that number.

    • moreover

      erm, your point is?

    • mopet54 .

Persona 4 Golden 137K, first week, 1 plataform
ps vita, a platform with smaller distribution…

a spin off sell better than the original franchise game…

      hmm…

      • ChieIsLifeButNaotoisBestWaifu

The DAN game sold like 90k too and its a spinoff

    • ChieIsLifeButNaotoisBestWaifu

The dancing game sold 90+ k too

  • Hexodious

Dunno how much Atlus was expecting to sell on Final, SMT IV almost sold the double of that, hopefully they didn’t set their expectations high

    • kthanxyousuck

It still sold somewhere between 60-80% of it’s shipment so they did have lower expectations for a direct sequel

  • Pastmaster

Like with all other old games. What did people expect? Gravity Rush HD remastered – 25k, Valkyria Chronicles HD remastered – 30k, God Eater 2 – >40k, Toukiden Kiwami – >40k, FF Type-0 HD remastered >100k.

Ni no Kuni on DS released in 2010, PS3 version released the year after with same story and did 410k.

    • Elvick

PS3 version of Ni no Kuni isn’t the same story, it changes a significant amount with the inclusion of the White Witch throughout the entire game. People in the west seemed to come to some weird idea that it was just some epilogue tacked to the end that was different, which is false. The White Witch is woven into the entire game, start to finish. With it other characters relating to it, as a result some things are completely different.

And Kiwami could remove the original story content and still have enough content to count as a completely new game. TK did a disservice to Kiwami.

  • Suriel Cruz

    PLZ SMT IV:FINAL LOCALIZATION!!!

  • Darak

I love SMT games and I loved SMT IV but I lost almost all the hype for Final, it just looks too similar. I would prefer if they went for SMT V instead

    • OlimacFTW

P4 was too similar to P3, and I don’t think that made you lose the hype for the game.

      • ayanami-chan

P4… was not similar to P3

        • 「Pyrofrost」

Sounds like you and Darak played a different version of P3 and P4 than the rest of the world, lol

          • Fw89

why? i actually agree with them too.

            • 「Pyrofrost」

To be fair, they both used the same assets and pretty much the same gameplay (barring minor differences in social linking and the fact that you could control your PT members).

P4 is a game that simply built further on what was already created with P3. The same way as P2 (IS/EP) was to P1.

I love the Persona and MegaTen series as much as anybody here, but if we’re going to talk about differences, P2 (IS/EP) and P3 would be a better example. Now those two had many differences.
They seem to like doing things in twos with Persona. So we will likely see P6 not too long after P5, sharing a whole host of similarities.

              • Fw89

It depends on where you are looking to find those similarities. Most people will probably say dark souls 2 is about the same as 1, whereas as i see it’s pretty unanimous by the souls fanbase that 2 is much worse. Depends on what you compare, experiences vary.

              • Darak

yeah persona 3 and 4 are similar. but not as much as Final with IV, I mean you don’t revisit the same areas for most of the game, and you don’t speak with the same characters of the older game that much.
Yeah the gameplay of p3 and p4 are similar, but you have an entire new town, characters, plot, etc. While in Final almost everything happens in the same location.
I mean it’s pretty obvious, I don’t know why we are even discussing it lol

              • ChieIsLifeButNaotoisBestWaifu

the difference between the two Makoto can use fusion spells alone while Yu dont also P3 dont have cavalry attacks and fusion spell after all out attacks,Makoto can use other weapons but Yu cant,Yu can SLink all the party while Makoto dont, in P3 the reaper will hunt u while in P4 hes in the treasure chest,u cant split party in 4 but u can in 3,also Persona 4 Compedenium is cheaper than P3, u can buy skill cards in P4 and make ur izanagi badass while P3 dont,u can travel more places in P4 at night than 3,u can control ur party in .P4 while P3 dont so its not too similar aybe the graphics yes

        • moreover

read that as “had many similar assets”, I doubt they actually care for anything else

        • OlimacFTW

Well, Final is not similar to IV.

      • Darak

if you are gonna talk random bullshit then please don’t even try

        • donkey3

          Damn. Fanboy ALERT Yo.

        • OlimacFTW

          It seems truth hurts, right?

          • Fw89

your opinion is not the truth bro, didn’t your mom teach you that?

          • Darak

you contradict other people with childish things that you have no clue at all, and you think you are speaking the truth? lool

    • Fw89

I know what you mean but thats because its supposed to be felt like an expansion more than a new game, hence the same title.

      • Darak

yeah I know, and that’s what makes me not caring abut this game that much. I know it’s to make some cheap money with the assets before going for smtv but yeah, I’m still gona play it lol

I think it’s more a Persona 2 IS and EP situation. A dualogy of games sharing assets between the two but having their own separate stories. Final has lots of new areas among various improvements to IV such as better dungeons, expanded areas from IV, and the demons feel more unique. The only thing I can say the game falls short on compared to IV is that some of the story parts feel less subtle and more in your face on top of having two of the worst characters to ever grace SMT. Toki and Asahi.

I expected SMT IVF to break at least 100k. Honestly the naming might be an issue with it. Regardless though after being spoiled to hell and back the game has more than enough fresh content to warrant being it’s own game but I would have preferred a Maniax edition of IV instead. Still waiting on that localization announcement.

That’s actually still pretty great for an atlus title. It was very close to 100k out the gate but I’m gonna take a guess and say it’ll sell better in the west like some atlus titles do.

Surprised so much people bought SMT IV again. Japanese gamers love enhanced/Special/overclocked/advanced/R/Fes/Super/Ultra/Re editions of the same game.

Um its not the same game, its a sequel to SmT IV.
