  • Jack Atlas

Gotta admit, that Narga in the trailer looked pretty awesome. Hope this gets localized.

  • Elvick

Gimme. The only MH thing that appeals to me.

  • Otaku DJK1NG (YouTube)

Now this is the Monster Hunter I WANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Traingham

Gonna find myself an infant Gore Mangala and try to raise it without infecting the surrounding population of monsters.

    • Varianto Ariowibowo

dont forget your well being if you raise gore.

    • An Tran

Don’t forget that Gore Magala is already a juvenile monster, so uh….good luck with that .

  • Bebop

I love monster hunter…this different art direction is pretty cool! id like a main game to have cell shading like this, or a spin off thats more traditional but with this cool art like EX troopers to Lost planet

  • Steven Justin Brañas

I hope Nerscylla will be a possible companion, or some of the other serpentine wyverns.

  • vishmarx

arguably the best looking 3ds game, why more devs dont use this especially on weaker hardware is beyond me.

    • Bebop

      too much sense playa

      • vishmarx

not only is it less power consuming , it ages way way better than most other styles.
anyways , cant wait to play this, im more excited for this than i have been for any mainline monster hunter.the best thing about monhun is not the graphics or combat, but the monsters themselves. that combined with my 2 other most favorite things, classic rpg and cel shaded graphics makes it a match made in heaven…
those special attacks look siq…graphically, dare i say capcom has outdone nintendo on their own hardware. for a console dedicated to smaller audiences, the 3ds sure has a lack of games with simple artstyles, even nintendo’s own games try too hard to use realistic models for cartoon characters which looks awful
compare pokemon to smash.smash looks butt ugly compared to it.
speaking of monhun, i too hope they use this style for mainline games on handhelds atleast, mhx looks like poop compared to even a decade old ps2 monster hunter.
the only game that hasnt aged badly despite realistic gfx is shadow of colossus, it baffles me every time i play it. but that too has a lot to do with its art and animations

        • Bebop

i love MH Bruh, i dont know why they wont update the engine…its retarded…i also dont understand why they wont make a ps4 version that can cross play with vita…if SSMB can do it with 2 different graphic types for the wii u and 3ds…why cant Monhun do it?

          • Bobby Jennings/GodlessChaos

Well SSMB can’t cross play with 3DS and Wii-U. The most you can do is use your 3DS as a controller

            • Bebop

Well shit, that makes the removal of ice climbers even more stupid in the Wii u version…

              • Bobby Jennings/GodlessChaos

They wanted them to be the “same” and not one better than the other so they just ditched Ice Climbers…

                but honestly Rosalina/Luna work similar

    • genkivision

That’s because it’s clearly not running on a 3DS. The gameplay trailers are all rendered at HD Resolutions, while the 3DS only renders at 240p.

      • vishmarx

well too bad theres footage of the game running on a 3ds and looking just as good

        • An Tran

Sigh, this whole conversation got a bit confusing. Basically they rendered the trailer on PC using the dev kits so that they can apply better AA and offer higher resolution for the video. No one wants to watch a trailer where everything is pixellated, and Capcom needs this game to look its best so that they can better capture their target audience. It’s all about first impressions and presentation.

The game itself should look about the same in terms of model, texture, and effects quality. You’ll just be viewing everything on a ridiculously low resolution screen with a bunch of aliasing.

      • vishmarx

, also never use that logic again.

        • genkivision

Except it’s fact. It literally won’t look as good as it does in the trailer while you’re actually playing it.

The 3DS literally is not capable of rendering 1080p like the trailer does.

I’m not saying the game looks bad – just that it won’t like it does in the trailer(s).

Showing me off-screen footage of the game doesn’t change hard technical facts.

          • Meret

It looks as good as E.X. Troopers, released by Capcom on 3DS few years ago. Their colorful games looks stunning on 3DS.

            • genkivision

I’m not saying it looks bad – or that it will look bad – just that it won’t look like exactly like it does in the trailer because of technical limitations. Man.

          • vishmarx

hard technical ass…a trailer doesnt render, a trailer is a capture of a render. so go read a book on basics and come back when you know what youre talking about

nobody ever remotely suggested 3ds being capable of native 1080p output in any sense.

and if that quality ,to you looks like a game thats internally rendered at 1080p you need new eyes.

if it were 1080p the image would be way way sharper and somewhat aliased, lower res softens the image upon hard upscale.

im not saying it cant be a bullshot but stop it with the cold hard facts shit,

do these look like downscaled 1080p screenshots to you?

this is a trailer grab from an actual cel shaded 1080p game

not even true 1080p or downscaled.

do you notice the difference in the sharpness?

            all the while,

you completely ignore that a 3ds game can look just as sharp as a 1080p under the right conditions with loss of some detail.why? because of its tiny screen.

the screenshots look nothing like rendered in 1080p. stop kidding yourself.

            • genkivision

Those Screenshots look nothing like the trailer, yes, exactly..

The Trailer does not look like upscaled imagery (because it isn’t), because there would’ve been way more artifacts, like aliasing as you said.

The Screenshots you posted are 400×240, which is the 3DS’ resolution. Scale up the image to 1080p in Photoshop and look what happens.

The Trailer very clearly is not rendered at 240p, nor 240p upscaled to 1080p. It’s clearly running off some devkit and outputted at 1080p to make for a better trailer.

        • Budgiecat

          this is promoting animal violence..

          • UnlmitedGameWorks

I said that to a lecturer that came to our school once……….
            It was not pretty…

        • Cazar

The trailer isn’t native 1080p but defintely not at 3DS resolution either.

It wouldn’t be the first time Capcom rendered a 3DS game off-hardware for promotion’s sake.

          An extreme example:

    • nerO_Orin

Agreed, visually it looks very colourful and usually when I see gameplay videos in Youtube for 3DS games, it is heavily pixelated and rough on the edges.

The cel-shaded effect might be giving it the extra gloss.

Oh this is basically Dragomon Hunter bwahahahaha

  • Hexodious

To be honest, it looks really beautiful for a 3DS game

    • yellowmage

Agreed, and it could look even better; IIRC, this is one of the games that is graphically enhanced when played on a New 3DS.

(Seriously, why didn’t they just call it the 3DS+?)

    • British_Otaku

Capcom and MT Framework Lite (which I assume this is) consistently turn out results.

I can’t wait to roam and battle myself especially if they have a demo coming out before the full game this year.

One Piece Unlimited World Red also looked too good for the 3DS back in 2013 but they sold their soul in return, making it one of the most disappointing games I’ve played. I hope this game gets things right.

  • Pastmaster

It looks great but my main issue are the characters. Another 12 year old boy and girl to save the world. I understand why they are doing this, they need money quick to recover from the big fuckups they made last gen. It will please the Pokémon and Youkai-Watch audience. If they wanted more adult characters as main it wouldn’t have sold to that crowd since most of them who buy the numbered and cross Monster Hunter wouldn’t care. That deep gameplay the usual MH is offering is not to be seen here. I expect MH Stories to perform on the same level as Youkai-Watch.

    • kthanxyousuck

So it will sell about the same level as MHX then? lol Because that’s what Yokai-Watch main entries sell.

They’re introducing Monster Hunter to younger fans in hope of expanding the audience, nothing wrong with that. That’s why they’re releasing an anime along with it. It’s also for people (like me) who find Monster Hunter as it is to be too intimidating to play. Give me a RPG focused story with turn-based gameplay anyday.

      • British_Otaku

A lot of us assumed that Gaist Crusher and perhaps E.X. Troopers were attempts to hook people onto hunting type gameplay too. Both games had Monster Hunter costumes among other things.

I’m sure this one will do better since it has the MH label on its head. It will probably do better than Yokai Watch 1 for the first week but I wonder if I can maintain a sales arc like that.

        • Budgiecat

also not a hunting game but Marvel Disc Wars was an attempt on grabbing the Japanese youth to Marvel franchise with its 3DS game and anime. Didnt really hook though.

          • British_Otaku

I can name them all. Gaist Crusher, Hero Bank, Gyrozetter, Majin Bone
… and Kaio also didn’t do well. If they all had unique problems but to sum them up, they released without a cute mascot in their first (sometimes only game – Kaio didn’t launch but yeah).

And they were all new IP which had to cover the lost ground with crossovers, brand deals, anime, manga and arcade games which didn’t translate into popularity for a lot of reasons too. I imagine they got poor slots in many cases.

            • Budgiecat

also Elemental Hunters (which had an anime too) and Kaiju Busters

              • British_Otaku

I almost don’t think they count unless they have a serialised TV anime, personally.

That’s when you know the publisher expects returns, when they commission a year long weekly ad which runs for the better part of 30 minutes.

I imagine there are a lot I don’t know for the DS since my portable importing thing caught on this generation. Might look into Elemental Hunters.

                • Budgiecat

I watched the first episode of it then got bored lol

But Kaiju Busters is based on the Ultraman franchise, so even though it doesnt have “an anime”, its still has popular monsters spanning 50 years.
Hell, Ultraseven’s Capsule monsters (plus Gacha) is what inspires Pokemon lol

      • Pastmaster

I know I will get my games with adult characters from Capcom further on. Only problem I have with this gen is the mess with Panta Rhei engine and their financial position. They used to be the first publisher to support next-gen right out of the gate but their partnership with MS in the early Xbox 360 days turned them into Crapcom or Capcpom for the time being. Ever since 2013 there has not been anything new or exciting coming from in-house studios other than talk and interviews. I’m aware of they have more money now compared to 2013.

        • tehhead

hey, early 2006 is a great year for capcom
lost planet is great on its own, resident evil 5 still look phenomenal to this day, dead rising was great, DMC4 is the epitome of stylish action

its on 2009-2013 where they hit rock bottom on international market (since japan is still thriving on MH)
thanks to inafune policy to hire non japanese studio to develop western aimed games

even those aren’t completely terrible, they just forgetaable

    • British_Otaku

The characters? They all seem fun and likely to complement the experience rather nicely. The tension between riders and the more established hunters has potential as well.

I think you don’t follow that Pokemon largely sells to adults despite the merchandise probably holding the attention of kids:

I won’t assume that all of the PKMN or MH audience will care but it seems likely to do well even if adult party members are temporary.

  • Dysisa

I love it, so what if it’s different? There’s MHX for my ‘traditional’ hunting needs. It looks adorable, and I get to ride a Rathalos. That’s all I need.

    • British_Otaku

That is all it needed. It seems to let us have another human party ally too and more monsters to ride on which I can’t name because I’m a newbie.

      • s07195

Hey you playing FE if already?

        • British_Otaku

Finished it last year but I’ve gotten into it again recently, why do you ask?

          • s07195

I accidentally highlighted your avy. XD
I beat Hoshido, stopped at Ch10 Nohr atm (6 months later lol)

wait… I think I might have discussed with you before…

            • British_Otaku

You probably have, I’ve had the avatar for almost a year now too. I beat Hoshido on Hard and am working on a Lunatic run for the game as well.

I’ll get the special edition and DLC at some point this year.

  • Budgiecat

oh cmon lol the actual gameplay doesnt look like these cutscenes :p

    • vishmarx

its a turn based rpg…what did it have to look like?

      • Budgiecat

        like the cutscenes lol.

When you make a turn based RPG. its actually easier to do cinematic cut ins. Because then the game does all the work camera wise and you’re basically watching a short film for that action sequence. Thats why stuff like FF XV can only do it with the QTE stuff.
The problem here is the 3DS isnt powerful enough to pull it off to look like what is shown in this trailer lol

        • vishmarx

          i dont get it?
are you talking about the graphics or just how the moves are animated?

          • Budgiecat

            • vishmarx

look the same to me…the moves, not the graphics

              • Budgiecat

Its toned down to meh presentations because lack of cinematic camera use the trailer showed

    • kthanxyousuck

Have you seen the off-screen footage? It looks pretty close to it.

      • Budgiecat

“good enough” is still nothing like these cutscenes lol

  • Claude

No way there isn’t an NX version in the wings with this graphical fidelity.

    • Revorse

X gonna give it to you.

    • kthanxyousuck

There’s gameplay on 3DS showing the game looking like this?

  • RentALine

  • Yuntu

I get why it is on the 3DS, but thats the dealbreaker for me. Not going to buy a handheld again for one single game.

    • British_Otaku

      Three reasons:
      1) Capcom are very used to the hardware and have been making some of the best games for the system since 2011 to this year. Other game franchises include Ace Attorney, Nazo Waku Yakata, Street Fighter, Gaist Crusher, Resident Evil, Lost Planet (via E.X. Troopers) and Megaman Legends (even if it was cancelled) for retail games.

      2) The Monster Hunter audience has been pushed on the 3DS for the most part – even Monster Hunter X and Diary are there, not just the main series.

      3) The 3DS seems to have a lot of luck when games like this are marketed well. Yokai Watch is a shining example. Capcom’s prior history had Megaman Battle Network and Star Force basically do the same thing and they have more confidence in the 3DS than other platforms for this.

Fair enough if you don’t want to get another handheld and maybe you even had a great reason to sell your last one (assuming it was a 3DS of some type), it is far from only one game worth playing.

      • Yuntu

Thanks for listing them again, but I knew the reason it is there. And yeah I had a 3DS at some point, played the games I wanted to play. Nothing got announced, I needed money … so yeah. And besides this and Bravely Second nothing interests me and I pretty much know the lineup.

        • British_Otaku

Fair enough. Hopefully, Square Enix and Capcom keep up the localisations for games you want then you might try them out on a second hand/refurbished system or something.

Bravely Default isn’t a game I loved, but Bravely Second seems like an improvement on the last game.

  • Cael

I hope this isn’t what they use as the base for the anime.
The game itself looks neat though.

    • s07195

The anime is literally an adaptation of this game…

      • Cael

        • Varianto Ariowibowo

          please dont

        • s07195

Hey there’s still the Ace Attorney anime. XD

    • kthanxyousuck

Why would you expect the anime to be something different? Lol. It’s to sell the game.

      • Cael

Because I thought they would finally make an anime out of the standard MH games after all these years?

  • Varianto Ariowibowo

    daang that narga.

  • An Tran

Jeez, even when it comes to cartoonish games, Nintendo can’t even come close to matching Capcom in graphics on the own system. Nintendo needs to stop asking Bamco for help and go ask Capcom instead. We all know Cappy needs the money while Ninty needs to learn how to develop for 7th gen consoles (even though 3DS has roughly the power of a 6th gen console, I just mean that Capcom can do better to help in general).

  • Darak

this one looks actually more appealing to me than the main MH.
Might give it a try if they bring it west :D

  • El Chromah

It looks great graphically and especially for the 3ds but I’m happy with what I have as very few 3ds games appeal to me besides bravely second, persona q and megaten 4. 3ds owners you have fun with this for me.

  • iamakii

Damn this look game looks great! Thinking of getting 3DS for this game alone.

    • Mimi

soooooooo many other reasons to get a 3ds

  • Duo Trio Dio

    Please come to the USA.

  • Nikolas Shea

The longer a franchise is around, the better the chance it has to devolve into a bunch of twelve year old chibi garbage. zzzz, next. Give me a game that wasn’t neutered, plz. kthx

  • Etherblaze

I can ride a nargacuga. SOLD.

Can I play as a female? This trailer hints heavily at “no”.

  • The real monster

I don’t really like the round based combat, but i’m a fan of MH since i was 12. When i killed my first Tigrex, i was dreaming of having some monsters as friends and fight together with them. Or what about being a monster? ^^ This game looks quite interesting anyway.
