Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book

Gust has shared the first details and screenshots from its newly announced Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book, coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PS Vita in Japan on September 25.

Get the information below.

■ Introduction

The sparse, but full-leaf trees rustle and the birds sing as the morning sun rises and the light illuminates the flowers on the street.

On the outskirts of a town with such a warm atmosphere, where the sunlight filters through the trees and a carpet of yin and yang is laid out, lives a girl alone.

She is a cheerful, yet somehow overlooked, ordinary girl who’s anywhere. But she has a special power the town’s people do not possess.

She possesses the mysterious power of “Alchemy,” which lets her synthesize materials to create something entirely different.

However, she continues to fail at the most crucial of mixing—as is the limits of a girl who learned from a book rather than from a teacher.

But one day, the girl encounters a strange book that can talk and possesses knowledge of alchemy, beginning a new story.

■ Characters

Sophie Neuenmuller (voiced by Yuuka Aisaka, designed by Noco)

Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book

16 years old. 154cm. Alchemist.

The protagonist of the story. She runs an alchemy business and lives on the outskirts of the town Kirhen Bell.

She is a cheerful girl who calms her those around her. But she can also be sloppy at times.

She loves alchemy and feels great joy when using it to help people. She puts in more effort and curiosity than others, but doesn’t do any housework out of principle. She’d rather leave it to other people.

Plachta (voiced by Yuka Iguchi, designed by Yuugen)

Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book

16 years old. 152cm. She’s a book.

She’s an old book given to Sophie by her grandmother and put away on the atelier bookshelf. Sophie awakens her through the recipes written in the book, and she becomes Sophie’s teacher.

In the wake of a certain event, she takes the appearance of a person. But with this new form her character does not change, and she becomes Sophie’s advisor.

But she doesn’t know much outside of alchemy, so when she strolls about town, she is troubled by the incomprehensible remarks of those around her.

She has a calm personality, but can sometimes be surprisingly daring. By regaining her human form, she is trying to remember a certain mission she needs to fulfill.

■ A Journey to Regain the Memory of Alchemy

Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book

Alchemy

Alchemy means inclining one’s ear to a substance, listening to that voice, making dreams come true, and shaping things.

In this game, Sophie is an Alchemist whose aim it is to restore Plachta’s lost memory. As Sophie uses alchemy freely, she writes new recipes in Plachta. That’s the method to restore Plachta’s lost memory.

Before long, Plachta understands why she was once human and is able to give Sophie a sign. This is called “returning Plachta to her human form.” Thus begins the story of the novice alchemist Sophie.

■ Alchemy that Starts from an Idea

Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book

In this game, the objective is to restore Plachta’s memory. In that sense, players will deepen their knowledge of alchemy by conceptualizing recipes. All of Sophie’s actions, such as fighting monsters and mixing items, serve the purpose of conceptualizing recipes that will become provisions.

The keyword is “idea.”

In this game, the “knowledge, inspiration, and experience” obtained through your actions will become elements for your recipe ideas.

Mastering Alchemy

Use the recipes you come up with to mix your ingredients, and use the items you create in battle.

■ Doll Make

Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book

Through the power of “Doll Make,” you’ll be able able to customize Plachta using items you’ve synthesized. The deeper you advance your alchemy, the more you’ll be able to customize Plachta. Each of her appearances has different abilities, but how will if affect Sophie?

■ Day and Night

Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book

In the world of Atelier Sophie, time will move and the world will change from day to night.

Some materials can only be found at certain times (morning, evening, etc.)

Depending on the time you go out, you’ll meet people who you don’t usually encounter, or you may see changes in the town shops.

When it becomes nighttime, the monsters of the night will come out, which may be stronger than those you encounter during the day.

Well Plachta certainly balances the more conservative looking Sophie

    • mrgrgr!

Different artist. Hoped we could dress plachta more conservatively via dollmake

      • Budgiecat

“I only read Plachta for the articles I swear”

        • mrgrgr!

          I do too! :>

  • Psycho Android

A game this nice needs to be on PS4.

    • mrgrgr!

      It is on ps4 :)

    • http://t.co/hs9uhabkCx nekogenesis

      It is :D

  • Red

    “16 years old. 152cm. She’s a book.”

    Sure, why the fuck not.

    • Nagi

Not the first time books are like that, definitely won’t be the last.

      • http://www.gameanyone.com/DukeVerde DukeVerde

Except the last time a book spoke, it didn’t turn in to a adolescent girl….and it was much more awesome.

        • DrForbidden

Yes. It had Liam O’ Brien’s voice, for starters…

        • Lastlight

          Librom?

        • Nagi

I am reminded of Trinity Seven mostly, hahahaha

    • Budgiecat

but is she a good read that you just can’t put down?

  • https://twitter.com/BinksFrost Binks5

ah some interesting info and the city at night sure looks pretty

    • Nagi

I always enjoy looking at the night sky on games like these, makes me feel at peace.

  • Nagi

This game got announced recently and they already have everything planned out, and even a close release date. Well, for Japan anyway. I won’t port it because I know it’ll come west, the question is when though? Hopefully not too long!

  • Suriel Cruz

    I’m missing Hidari’s artwork already. : (
Hopefully this new trilogy(?), will not be a step back in the series, but forward. ^ ^

  • Pekola

Look at what a bit more info can do. This game now sounds interesting in its premise.

The concept of Dollmake and a Book trying to regain its memories sounds like something I’d like to play.

That said, this game suffers from the same thing the other games do. The environments look so at odds with the character models.

    • Budgiecat

“Book trying to regain its memories”

      Didnt NieR do that?

      • mrgrgr!

Nier did that.. Issue is those books look musty & ugly aint moe like this one

        • DrForbidden

          SSsshhhhhhh…..

Don’t use that word in front of Budgiecat…

  • Jin Jinathin Pitts

so what kind of game is this? JRPG? Action RPG? from the looks of day and night scene i guess its semi open world, going around and collecting items and such

    • chocodino

turn based RPG, but if you really want to know this games, better see some videos of other Atelier games.

      • Jin Jinathin Pitts

yeah saw one screen shot of it shows battle. is it just simple turn based or is it more like Neptunia where you have set area to walk around and set attack patterns?

        • http://twitter.com/SrTirano MrTyrant

Not like Neptunia but in the latest games you had an area to move the characters around and fast switching characters combo.

        • chocodino

while it leans more to “simple turn based”, there are attacks/Items that can attack opponents nearby the one you select, unlike neptunia games, you do not move, don’t make “combos” [rush/break/power] and you don’t have a certain area where your attack will hit, also the gameplay changes per game [to bigger or lesser extend], so the most specifics I can’t talk About.

but some of the games have a……lets call it “relay system” where you can change your party member right after doing an attack onto another member who will automatically attack, this can be done as long as your reserve characters [up to 3] are able to change with your main members [there is a bar per character that fills over time], allowing for some combos [especially since there are specific effects triggered by the relay], this relay can also be activated when you are attacked, as to make your targeted character evade the attack, and another receive it [defending, reducing the damage and activating their relay ability]. But as I said, this is only present in some of the atelier games so you can’t really expect it to appear in this entry, it might or it might not.

        • natchu96

The series is actually for the most part focused on the alchemy/synthesis and making of items.

Battle is just a source of corpses to gather materials from besides picking it off the ground, as well as something to use those dimension bombs and what have you on.

But yeah, it’s mostly standard turn based.

  • http://www.gameanyone.com/DukeVerde DukeVerde

How can a book be 16 years old? <_<

    • http://twitter.com/SrTirano MrTyrant

Sophie’s grandma created the book 16 years ago?

      • http://www.gameanyone.com/DukeVerde DukeVerde

I can only imagine what she looked like when she was made, and what kind of weird fetishes her grandma had…

        • DrForbidden

Yeah, it’s about time we start putting those damn bibliophiles on the sex offender registry. As an owner of several hundred books, I don’t feel safe at all if one of those perverts move into my neighbourhood.

          • natchu96

Now imagine if the sex offender registry was a 16 year old girl.

            • http://www.gameanyone.com/DukeVerde DukeVerde

The registry is the sex offender? So the sex offenders are registering with another sex offender? X_X My head…

  • ayanami-chan

    Plachta reminds me of me

  • ayanami-chan

    Doll make?!? DOLL MAKE!?!?!?

  • Firion Hope

    Plachta a cute

  • Ngurah Danda

yuugen? so yuugen is one of the character designer for this game?
    ok, i’m buying it

  • natchu96

    That synthesis screen.

    Is it just me or does Sophie look like she has no clue what the hell she’s doing O_O;

    • http://twitter.com/SrTirano MrTyrant

Since when they know what are they doing?

      • natchu96

They at least read off of a recipe book . . . even though 90% of them are guesstimating the numbers.

She’s got that “what the hell is supposed to even happen here” vibe for some reason . . .

In all seriousness I’m more referring to the fact that just looking at that screen alone it looks like it was designed to be a complete mess intentionally with nothing all that specific telling you what to put in.

        • KenAyagami

I think all of the female protagonist in altelier games start of with no idea of alchemy what so ever, so it’s pretty much expected

          • natchu96

I admit I wasn’t very specific the first time, but with you replying to my second post specifically I would’ve thought people would’ve stopped misinterpreting by now T_T

    • http://www.gameanyone.com/DukeVerde DukeVerde

That’s the point of this story… Sophie, basically, has no real clue about Alchemy.

  • TrueDefault

Is this part of Alesha chronicles?

    • SprintsMcGee

Nope, it’s the start of a new Trilogy/Chronicle. The Dusk games ended with Shallie

    • dispedia

atelier games mostly consist of trilogy. you got arland series : rorona, totori and meruru.
dusk series : ayesha, escha logy and shallie.

  • Davorbasic

    I like it.

  • Mark Lengod

    Day/Night System at last!

  • Zepht

Plachta is a book and her clothes are disgusting for a book with a girl’s body.

    She is a p*** book hahahahah =D

  • Wolfe

    Looks great. Love the art.

  • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

Dire? Epic? Badass? I want to buy you but you gotta speak my language.

  • Manny Being Manny

So is there any word on the time limit?

  • 小豆梓@ツンデレペタンw

So they’re pushing with the character 3D model on the synthesis screen. That didn’t work quite well in Shallie, but damn PS4 is powering this thing.
I don’t mean to sound like mustard rice, but maybe this should run on 1080p 60fps on PS4.

  • LordKaiser

Do they removed the time limit? This is the question. It’s a good thing for me but not for the core fan base of the series that loves to be limited.

    • Hikari Langley

Yeah, so far it’s just the day and Night system that Mana Khemia has in field, but likely just to run in full time. As for actual days, nothing seems to pass.

  • Kimihito Kurusu

If they removed the time limit I’ll be getting that collectors edition for the Ps4. Hopefully the other 2 Atelier games will be coming to Vita as well.

  • Arcliff7

    Plachta reminds me of Tyria.

  • leadintea

I liked the Dusk series artist much more than this one.

    • dispedia

yeah dusk series is better for sure. imo the design here is a bit generic, except plachta

  • Soul-Master

Nice. I still have some to play from the PS3. This one is on a new region. Can I assume it won’t be connected to previous games?

    • mrgrgr!

base on the information they gave it isn’t connected to dusk.

  • xXDGFXx

Bring on the fluffy girls >:)

  • TrueDefault

We never get any limited edition for Atelier series!

    • Azaa

Arland series had those, and Shallie had LE. And this will probably get one as well, since the Shallie LE sold out in both Europe and NA.

      • TrueDefault

        Oh I see… I’ve only played Arland so I didn’t notice.

        • Kevadu

…but the Arland games definitely had LEs. I mean, I own them.

          • TrueDefault

Haha!! Never mind then. I was too tired to do research.

  • neptunanatsu

    Okay, I just read “she’s a book”

  • Taiho

Oh god I hope there is a time limit… Shallie’s replay value was ruined because of a lack of one

    • Saddio

I actually loved it because it has no time limit :/ I don’t like the time constraints honestly, I can’t spend countless hours experimenting or messing around because I was always on the clock. So… I HOPE IT HAS NO TIME LIMIT! :D

      • someguy

Or it can have a time limit and then let you an unlimited postgame so you can spend countless hours experimenting or messing around.

        • Saddio

No! Don’t rush me through story! I want to take my damn sweet time! Savoring every moment. It’s not mission critical! I get rushed enough at work :D

      • Taiho

All you had to do was save before you wanted to experiment then reload.. either way it doesnt feel like an Atelier game without one.

    • Satoshi Ookami

Agreed. Would love time limit as well.
Atelier without time limit doesn’t feel that good :/

      • Taiho

yeah for real, I never felt like I was really doing anything and the game was too easy since I got to like level 50 by chapter 3

  • Kaga

So what happen if we write this

    http://i.imgur.com/XrZeD2q.gif

  • gulabjamal

That in game graphics plus day and night system. Looks like Dark Cloud 2 and my heart can’t handle that

    • EnzerPyro

      *gets CPR* CLEAR!

  • https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9OfI5Q2bHMAse95sgWMU2Q NinEnixAtArt

Can this game get any cuter? <3

  • http://psnprofiles.com/TomatoDragon TomatoDragon

I’ve been wanting to get into this series for a long time now. Think I’ll finally take the plunge. Finally did with Disgaea 4 and completely addicted to it.

  • TwinBuns

I quite like Sohpie’s character design.

I’m interested to see how they can make the day/night cycle work without being annoying for completionists.

    • Clousephinat

I just hope is not like Mana Khemia actually.

  • Retsu Unohana ®

    FINALLY a PS4 version!

  • Doug Thorne

Is there a point where these games really suck you in? I own Atelier Ayesha and I’ve tried and tried but the story isn’t really engrossing.

    • Hikari Langley

It’s mostly a hit and miss for These games as for Ayesha I really got into the story once I fully worked on saving Nio.

  • Lara Croft

    “16 years old. 152cm. She’s a book.” :P

  • http://www.flavors.me/ericgornicki Eric Gornicki

As a fan o Hidari’s artwork I think this is a step back regarding character design, but the game seems to follow the same old formula of other Atelier games, so the ones that like the series so far will probably enjoy this one as well.

  • brodude

Any word on The NA release? i love the atelier series
