PS4 2.50

Sony Computer Entertainment has begun a new PlayStation 4 system software beta testing program for its PlayStation MVP Program members, and details on firmware update version 2.50, now in beta testing, have leaked.

The main feature of the 2.50 update is the long-awaited suspend/resume feature first announced at PlayStation 4’s reveal press conference in February 2013.

Here’s the outline:

Main Features

  • The system can now enter rest mode without closing any applications. You can adjust this setting in [Power Save Settings] > [Set Functions Available in Rest Mode].
  • [Accessibility] has been added to [Settings]. You can adjust accessibility settings such as zooming and button assignments.

This information comes from a beta tester who leaked the update screen image. There appears to be other features introduced in the update that are not main features, like one pertaining to trophies, but they are cut from the screenshot.

Update 3:28 p.m.: Here are more features, via Wario64 (2, 3):

  • Delete trophies with zero percent.
  • Search trophy details on the internet, including screenshots of scenes with trophies.
  • SharePlay at 60 frames per second.
  • Share trophy details and screenshots.

Update 4:08 p.m.: Apparently the firmware is being planned for a public release either later this month or sometime in April.

Update 6:28 p.m.: A screenshot of 2.50’s new button mapping feature has appeared online.

Update 7:03 p.m.: This is apparently what the screen looks like after resuming a game from rest mode.

PS4 After Resume

Update 9:15 p.m.: The full list of changes for the 2.50 beta is out, thanks to Wario64. Get that below.

Trophies

  • You an now delete trophies with 0% achievement progress.
  • [Earned Date], [Not Earned], and [Grade] have been added as sorting options for trophies. You can also sort by [Earned Date] and [Not Earned] options when comparing trophies with other players.
  • You can now search the Internet for details about trophies from the options menu in [Trophies].
  • Screenshots of scenes when you earn trophies are now saved automatically. You can view saved screenshots in [Capture Gallery].
  • You can now share trophy details and screenshots. Select the trophy you want to share details about in [Trophy], and then press the Share button.

Share Play

  • You can now test the host’s connection speed when starting Share Play.
  • You can now enjoy Share Play at 60 fps. A host in a party can adjust the setting in [Party Settings] > [Video Quality for Share Play] > [Frame Rate].
  • A user who is running version 2.50 or earlier on their system cannot use Share Play with someone who is running version 2.50 beta on their system. Users who are both running system software version 2.50 beta can enjoy Share Play.

Other

  • Users who are your Facebook friends can now be displayed in [Players You May Know].
  • You can now send real name requests in addition to Friend requests to users who are currently not on your Friends list.
  • You can now apply a shadow style for text in [Themes].
  • You can now enter up to 140 characters for your self-introduction.
  • If you enter 22 characters or more for your self-introduction, only 21 characters will be displayed on a PS4 system running system software version earlier than 2.50.
  • You can now use the touch pad to operate playback of videos on discs.
  • [Discover] has been added to introduce users to PS4 system features. You can view information about features in [Notifications] > [Discover].
  • Remote Play cannot be used with a PS Vita system running version 3.35. A system software update for the PS Vita (to be released later) is required.

  • Elvick

Finally. Not sure why it’s taken so long, since games can already be suspended and resumed while the PS4 is in use. So it doesn’t seem too far off, yet it’s taken this long. And I’ve only ever had problems resuming once with Killzone, and that was a long ass time ago.

    • Budgiecat

I dont get it , why do I need this again?

      • Invisbin

It seems like some crazy ass priority to some people.

        • kenshee

Well, given I haven’t turned my 3ds or vita off since I bought the things, this feature is very important to me lol.

Not that I have a ps4 yet, and this feature is less compelling on a console than a handheld but still, very happy this promised feature is getting implemented, it was one of the biggest surprises to me during the reveal ^^

          • Elle

            Exactly.

      • DesmaX

Well, leaving the thing downloading stuff while using far less energy is pretty nice.

Also, if you need to leave in a hurry, you can just leave it resting and resume when you get back.

        • Elvick

It can already download in standby. But you’re right on the second.

        • Budgiecat

cant I do that now anyway?

          • DesmaX

            I dunno, I don’t have the console.

            My bad

          • http://zefhar.deviantart.com Zefhar

            Not the second bit.

            • Budgiecat

I mean, cant I just you know…..hit the pause button? :p

              • KainArkanos

Pause button doesn’t tone down the system’s power usage.

                • Budgiecat

oh so this is the main reason?

      • Elle

Dont you have a vita? You should know why.

        • Budgiecat

          you lost me

  • vishmarx

not that ill leave my console running with games on
    but choice is always good

  • DesmaX

    IT’S A MIRACLE

  • Invisbin

    Meh.

  • estebxx

Good that they are finally delivering on the promised feature, its defenetly something i will be using!, (unlike shareplay which is awesome but i have no one to share games with… :/ )

  • SuperLuigi

This is one of my favorite features on xb1. You don’t haft to fret for a save point just let it resume once you turn back on your console. Glad PS4 people are getting this!

    • Elle

I would have liked this for ps3 when I was playing star ocean 4 with it’s 3 hours with no save point dungeons.

      • SuperLuigi

I know right? Idk how many times I would be in the middle of a boss fight or something in games and haft to sadly turn off the console to head out somewhere or something. This feature is so underrated this gen. It is far more amazing than people are giving it credit for.

      • estebxx

OH my god… those F#cking dungeons… and lets not even talk about that space maze at the end…

        • Elle

Don’t remind me. I actually died two hours into that place! Had to start over then died again right before the save point.

          • estebxx

i NEVER use guides but i was so tired of running arround and getting nowhere that i just HAD TO, there is nothing i hate more than waisting time.

            • Elle

That dungeon was way too big.

  • pixxxelz

I must be one of the few people that doesn’t really give a damn about this feature, I would much rather have folders and being able to remove/rearrange apps on the home screen.

    • Zarathos No Daimaōh

I dont really need it on any console , but i’m glad it’s coming so people could stop being mad about it . Of course they’ll latch at something else next , like DNLA , but it’s still one less source of whining …

  • Orichalon Hades

    noice
    my PS4 will stay on
    FOREVER

  • AnimusVox

That trophy deletion should be added for PS3 also, but that’s still awesome.
    Thanks Sony :3

  • DesmaX

    Delete trophies with zero percent.
Search trophy details on the internet, including screenshots of scenes with trophies.
SharePlay at 60 frames per second.
    Share trophy details and screenshots.

    Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet

  • http://ryuz4ki57.wordpress.com/ Ryuzaki57

“delete trophy lists with 0%”… YATTTTTTTTTTTAAAAAAA! At long last I can get rid of that… I kinda want to be able to delete those under 10%, aka terrible games I couldn’t play longer

    • BabyChooChoo

I know how you feel…except in my case it’s a bunch of terrible games that my nephews played on my ps3 under my account. All those random shooters and Madden games will haunt me forever…

      • Elle

        Hannah Montana?

    • Elvick

      Bye bye Pain!

  • Travis

    Yes! this is great news!

  • Manny Being Manny

I will never have to see the credits loading up a game more than once now

  • りんごタルト@エスカのアトリエ

Will the delete trophy feature also remove games from my PS3 list? I have a lot of 0% games because some nerd is using my PS3 for other games.

    • Travis

It should delete trophies from all 3 systems.

      That’s what I’m hoping anyway..

    • Zackasaur

I’m sure it can. Trophies all look identical network-side.

  • http://zefhar.deviantart.com Zefhar

    Oh yeah!

I actually thought it was like that when I first saw the option to put the PS4 to sleep (and lost the progress on the game I was playing, lol).

    Will certainly use it.

  • Travis

Online Friend Notfications better be in this update as well.
Along with Online/Offline status, last sign in and being able to group friends.

    • schrodinger_cat

Yes, but it would be pointless, unless, we can create lists of friends and assign for them special notification settings. I have 50+ friends. I don’t want this notification to pop-up every minute

  • Elle

    Delete trophy with 0% !? Yaaaas !!!!!

Please let me delete GTA/ Madden/ NBA whatever/etc off my list

  • VisceralVenom

Worthless update that took half a year

  • shogunknight

Preview Program is a good strategy, really helped Microsoft and the Xbox one.

  • Syltique

Why not delete trophies at any percent? Some of those awful PS+ games give you a trophy for just turning it on practically.

    • estebxx

yes i want that as well, at least for those games under 50%.

    • Speedo Redempteur

because it can be abused , by someone taking your controller while you’re not looking away for exemple.

      And there are other exemples.

    • Vystrel

Will having a trophy on a certain game ruin your reputation?
Really dont see why you would that feature, just hide your trophies

    • schrodinger_cat

Trophy rarity count will be broken, if anyone can delete their trophies

  • commodorewheeler

These are both features that I will definitely take advantage of. Looking forward to it going live.

  • tplarkin7

Any kind of hibernation/sleep/rest mode etc. will lead to bugs. Use this feature sparingly, and restart/reboot the PS4 regularly.

    • jacksjus

Could be why it’s taking them so long. They may have already thought of that.

    • murk lurb

works pretty flawlessly on vita, 3ds and xb1

      • tplarkin7

I can’t speak for Vita or 3DS, but Xbox One needs to be rebooted daily to avoid bugs. MS even added “restart” in the power settings. (They should pin it on the dash.)

        • Elle

I never rebooted my vita unless there was a firmware update. Longest I have gone without rebooting is actually 7 months on the vita.

Edit: 3ds, an entire year since I never connect that thing to the internet.

          • Cazar

That’s gotta be bad for your battery.

        • murk lurb

works fine for me – maybe you should contact xbox tech support.

        • Neural

When’s the last time you tried it? It works perfectly fine since a lot of time now. I use it daily and never need to restart the console. Very useful feature.

    • Elvick

I haven’t had an issue for many many many months with regular suspend. I suspend a game, watch some Netflix/YouTube/Crunchyroll/use the browser/whatever and then resume my game and it’s fine.

Only had issues early on in the PS4’s life cycle with Killzone, but haven’t had an issue at all for a really long time.

  • MrSec84 .

This is a great update, with a lot of important features many users have been asking for.
A couple of others would be adding external HDD support, for transferring installed games and saves to an external HDD. Basically any data you want to move from your PS4 to HDD would be great.

I would also like to be able to be able to hide myself, so that I can choose when I want to be seen by friends.

It’s important if I want to play games and I’m getting stuck into a section of a game and I don’t want to be bothered.
Will something like this be added?

Trophy management, searching for specific games and instantly going to the trophy list of the game you’re currently playing would be useful.

If Sony could get this all incorporated into PS4’s OS by the time Uncharted is released that would be cool.

  • jacksjus

Yeah that suspend/resume will be nice, because shutting down the PS4 can be a chore.

    • murk lurb

      …what?

      • Joseph Dante

It suspends the game state and allows you to put the PS4 to sleep without losing progress. So when you turn the console back on, you can resume the game from the same spot instead of having to load your save. Most games have auto-save these days so it’s not as necessary as it may have been in the previous generation, but there are plenty of games where you may want to just pause it and resume later without starting the level over or something. Resident Evil Remake comes to mind.

    • ARMs7777

its more about turning off the system because something came up and you did not have time to get to a save spot.

      • jacksjus

I just want to hit the PS button and put in in rest mode. Easy!

  • http://www.dorqs.com/ Pace

well that didnt take long to leak.

  • Lindsay Lohan Spread Eagle

    Still no avatars, eh?

    • Exare

I personally don’t want Sony to adopt the Mii/Avatar feature because it’s kind of campy and unnecessary. They tried it a bit with PS Home (I think it was called?) on the PS3, that Second Life knock off thing full of micro transactions, and it was silly. The Mii’s work because they just scream Nintendo. My Mii Fighter in Smash Bros is a mega beast. The MS Avatars though, meh, I really didn’t like them. They’re too, “oh oh me too!”. Like they wanted to get in on the Mii action but prove they could do it better or something.

What I want is for us to be able to use our own images as our profile pictures without linking a FaceBook and loading up what we want through there. I have an avatar I use on everything (except my Disqus funny enough) that I want to load onto my PS4 but all I can do is chose from the presets. I don’t want to link my FB to my PS4. Blah.

      • Cazar

I think he was probably referring to the fact that you can’t select/purchase PSN avatars from the PS store with the PS4.

        • Exare

Ah icic. Even so, I wouldn’t buy a small picture I only see on my PS homescreen. Lol That’s just me though *shrugs* I really wish you could upload your own without having to go through the FB linking step. Maybe I should stop whining about it though and just link it. Lol I just don’t want my PSN associated with my FB. It’s weird to me.

          • Derek

you can use the ps app instead of facebook. also, the ps3 had a lot of free ones you could download.

          • Cazar

Like Derek said, you can use the app instead of facebook to upload a profile picture. But the thing with the avatars is they’re still separate from the profile pictures and they’re what everyone sees first if you haven’t set your real name/image to public.

            • Exare

Ooooooh okok. I gotcha. I’ll have to look a little closer. When I was adjusting mine and piking around I didn’t see that. Thank you.

        • Elvick

They need to switch it to a different system so we don’t need to have them locally to change them.

They changed online passes from needing to be installed to being attached to our ID. I don’t see why they can’t do the same with avatars.

I know it’d be some work though. Then we could change avatars on Vita too.

  • Solomon_Kano

I was just thinking about that suspend feature the other day. It’s about time.

  • LarZen

I want to delete games from my trophy list. Regardless of how many % I have played. I just want to remove allot of crap and make it more presentable in lack of better words…

    • schrodinger_cat

Never gonna happen, it will broke trophy rarity system

    • Derek

probably won’t happen, however you can hide any games’ trophy set from your list so others can’t see them, which is just about the same thing. its in privacy settings i think.

  • FlameEmperor

    Awesome!

  • Blue

“Delete trophies with zero percent.” Holy shit.

  • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

I still want to play cds on my PS4. And have youtube up there as an app.

    • KeeseToast

YouTube is up there as an app! Where do you live?

      • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

I’m in the US. But on my PS4 I only have Youtube as a site in the web service. Maybe I missed an update. My PS3 had Youtube as an app from pretty much the start.

        • Elvick

YouTube app has been out for months now. I’ve been using it all the time.

          Since October of last year.
          http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/10/28/youtube-comes-to-ps4-today/

          • Section8

So they’ll keep the YT app for ps4 but get rid of it for ps vita? Bastards!

            • Elvick

Totally different apps though. Current app is basically youtube.com/tv

I think they’re actually made by Google, while I think the Vita one is made by Sony or someone contracted by Sony to make it. Given that it circumvents ads completely, that would make sense.

              • Section8

                Still sucks though.

                • Elvick

I know, I love the Vita app.

          • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

            News to me.

        • Solomon_Kano

It took years for the PS3 to get that YT app though. The PS4 has had it for a few months now.

          • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

Odd. I’ll check my PS4 again. What about the CD player? Did they leave it out to force me to buy music?

            • Solomon_Kano

Who can say on CDs. They probably figured it wasn’t a widely used feature these days, which wouldn’t have been too outlandish a thought if MP3 playback was there from the start…

              • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

Problem is I usually would use my PS3 to put music from CDs on MP3 or tumbdrives. If my PS3 breaks I can’t do that on PS4.

  • sunK1D

Why half ass on the trophy deletion Sony?
Like fucking seriously? No wonder the house is coming down.

    • SprintsMcGee

How is that half-assing? (half assing? halfassing?)…half-assing…

      • yuina

It shouldn’t be limited to trophy lists with 0%. That’s not what people have been asking for.

        • schrodinger_cat

But it will mess with trophy rarity system. They wouldn’t do trophy deletion with any percentage of completion

  • ObsessedGeorge

I’d like to record my gameplay at 60 FPS. (for the games that run at 60)

  • XrosBlader821

I guess trophy deletion is a PS4 only feature. I guess once I get my PS4 I will be finally able to delete a few games that I did not care enough to unlock a single trophy from the list.

  • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

    Re: update 3.

You can finally switch X and Circle!

    • http://bu3ouf91.tumblr.com/ Vincent

      Yes

    • Cazar

Nice, now the PS4 is truly region impartial.

Now if only they could provide an update like that for Vita. Having a Japanese Vita and playing mostly NA games on it results in a lot of inconsistent controls.

    • Elle

      YAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Jay

Yeah, button mapping is really a standout feature for me.

  • tokyobassist

Trophy deletion is sweet but fuck not having a way to organize purchases on your DL list. Since cross buy happened, its mess to navigate.

Good to see a DS feature arrive in 2015 lol.

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

I really want them to get rid of demos showing in My Library.

Makes me never want to try out a game again knowing that it will forever appear on that screen.

  • Dammage

    WOOOO GOODBYE SOCOM CONFRONTATION!

  • DesmaX

    o, oh my

That guy shoudn’t left his account name on the picture

    • Elle

      Yep gonna get sued.

    • Bobby Jennings

Nah, it’s probably an example picture, kinda like what they did for the initial PS4 XMB showing.

      • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

        Nope, it’s the guy.

Edit: Thus why he deleted his tweet.

        • Bobby Jennings

          Oh then. DERP lmao

          • http://www.gamegolem.com Devin Strickland

I’m already outside his house as we speak

        • Elvick

          He done goof’d

          • AnimusVox

            He done derp’d

  • BlueCereal

Please give us the option to change our PSN ID already, if Japanese users can so can we. This is my second most requested feature of the PS4 which also applies to the PS3 and Vita.

    • King Shesh

God. I desperately want to play on PSN, but I can’t because the ID I made back when I was younger was soooo damn stupid. I don’t want the shame of going on with that name….
I’ve been biding my time for them to finally let me change it :(

      • BlueCereal

My one isn’t stupid its just that it has my real name on it.

        • King Shesh

          Another valid reason lol

      • Luna Kazemaru

no offense who fault is that you made a silly name?

        • King Shesh

Unfortunately my stupid 13-14 year old self :(

    • OverlordZetta

      Wait, Japanese users can? Really?

      • BlueCereal

That’s what I heard from many. Haven’t tried it myself though.

        • veruses

          Screen name. Not actual ID.

  • Lancer205

The deleting trophies feature makes me very happy.

  • Truthhurts24

Finally Sony it took a year

  • AsianGamer

it’s that big of a deal?

  • Zackasaur

Ooh! Console-side button mapping means that you can get custom controls on ANY game. Very nice.

And I’ll be using that Rest Mode. ♡ 60fps SharePlay also sounds great. SharePlay has to be the best feature/innovation of the gen so far.

The rest all sounds nice, as well. No more 0% games!

I’m very happy with this and am glad that they’re continuing to prioritise gaming features.

EDIT: Sal made me realise that we can swap X and Circle for imported games. :D

    • Section8

“Ooh! Console-side button mapping means that you can get custom controls on ANY game. Very nice.”

That’s the first thing I thought of when I read that. I sure hope that’s what it means. It does look like if you map the buttons from the console itself then any game would just recognize your controller mapping.

      • Zackasaur

Yep, that’s the idea. If we can make the console recognise X as Circle, there is nothing a game can do to reverse that.

        • Anime10121

If this is actually what it does… FUCKING HYPE! When the KH HD releases come out I’ll be able to change the buttons to the better positioned Japanese versions controls :D

          • Zackasaur

I don’t really see how it could do anything other than that, tbh. It’s a very straightforward idea. We just change how the system itself registers inputs.

It’s ingeniously simple! It’s so much so that I’m almost mad consoles haven’t done this since the beginning.

I thought Rest Mode would be my favourite part of 2.50, but button mapping takes the cake.

            • Anime10121

Well, I’ve been disappointed before expecting something that sounded so straightforward, to come out being something else entirely… so I’m always a bit weary until its “officially” confirmed what it means. But yeah, I dont see it being anything else either.

              • Zackasaur

I’m curious about a few minor details, like how dramatically certain things can be switched. The analogue sticks are both listed, but we’re not sure what that means. Can we simply swap them (a new era of gaming for lefties???), or is it even possible to do something more? I suspect just the former, since anything more radical would be hard to justify functionally. But it would still be interesting to see people map things like a full face button setup on an analogue stick for a whole new kind of comboing.

    • Elvick

Yeah, it’s pretty dope. No more confusing button mapping. >:3

Every game should have the feature, but the console doing it is even better. Hope there are no limitations to it.

  • oo7PorscheMGS

There’s a LOT of small details ps4 is still missing. Folders, friend online notifications (and u should be able to choose which friends you want to be notified of), DNLA…

The fact that taking a screenshot with the share button automatically deletes any video that was previous to that screenshot is another huge overlooked thing for people who like to capture moments but accidently hit the screen cap before thr video cap.

It’s this small / silly stuff that needs fixing. Common sense really if you use the system a lot…

One other thing is why can we not send aessage to ALL FRIENDS without the ps4 creating a “group chat” ? What if I just want everyone to get the message separately? This is a HUGE pain in the ass of a social gamer lol, it has hindered me from messaging all my friends about something new in the ps store or something. Why?? Because everytime someone leaves that group chat or sends “ME” a message back, EVERYONE gets a message. It’s very annoying. We need a way to message all friends, separately….

    • tokyobassist

      That stability doe

        Stability is necessary.

“The fact that taking a screenshot with the share button automatically deletes any video that was previous to that screenshot is another huge overlooked thing for people who like to capture moments but accidentally hit the screen cap before the video cap.”

      Did not know that. :)

“Remote Play cannot be used with a PS Vita system running version 3.35. A system software update for the PS Vita (to be released later) is required.”
PS Vita has a scheduled update for march. this means that PS4 update will probably come before that one, right?

  • rainelee

Can someone tell me the benefits of deleting trophies that are at 0%? I don’t get it. Does it save memory? Time? Cleanliness?

    • Mitch

Just personal preference. Like some people might have games they’ve played only once, yet those game will appear in their Trophy List with 0% which annoys some people. I just checked my Trophy List and I have 13 games with 0%.

      • rainelee

        Oh, okay. Gotcha. Thanks.

    • admiralvic

There are many benefits, though how useful/how much you care is going to vary from person to person. They include things like faster compare time, improve your obtain percent on trophy tracking sites and so forth. Now it offers no advantage when compared to hiding them, but it’s good for people with OCD or just really want to 100% everything or not see a reminder they didn’t do anything on a specific game. Especially something like 100 yen gomibako, which can only be played on a Japanese account.

    • Section8

Cleanliness. I would prefer them not to be there. Like when you do a game trial but end up never playing the game. Not to mention that this is a HUGE deal if you use your ps3. The more games in the que, the longer it takes to sync and if you’re like me, it takes forever.

    • Elvick

I like to view trophy lists and compare, and it takes ages and a half to load up a full list [especially mine]. So removing some games that are at 0% and that I will never play again [like Pain] will save some time and make it easier to compare trophies with people.

No reason for me to keep a trophy list around when I hated the game and have 0%.

  • NinjaBlaze

and still no ability to appear offline.

    maybe some year

    maybe some year

At least the ps3 has a workaround for this. Curse you ps4!

  • Section8

    Still no DNLA. WTF.

Why would you need DLNA? It has Plex now.

      • http://www.facebook.com/nunnybunny33 nunley33

the Plex app is only for Plex pass subscribers currently, that’s $99 i believe.

        • dnekuen

It’s $4.99 a month, but that’s because it’s a Plex Preview (Plex Pass subscribers only for a limited time). in 4 or 5 more months it will be free for everyone.

      • Section8

Which a)you have to pay for and b)it’s not my stuff. 9/10 I’m on my ps4. So I’d rather use my usb stick to watch my vids on.

        • dnekuen

Yes I know. There a lot of people still wanting to watch their pirated movies on PS4. But, if you’re really determined, there is also a way to use Plex for FREE to watch movies on your PS4. Just google it. I’m sure they’re working hard though so you can start watching all the movies you download from torrent sites or wherever.

No doubt, it is a high priority for them.

          • Section8

I don’t pirate movies that’s not my thing. I prefer to buy blu rays. And besides, for me it’s better to have physicalcontent, like steelbook cases. I’m into game cg trailers and cutscenes and other stuff. Which I can only use my ps3 for now.

          • Section8

There is no free version for plex.

  • http://www.wilflare.com/ Wilson

sounds like a solid update. hope Remote Play gets bumped up to 720p60 too

  • desponent

Damn, custom button mapping is huge if they can be assigned per-game profile.

  • darkchaser

nice but i hope there is more to 2.5 like friend notification, folders and DLNA. with how long sony take between firmware it’ll be a while before we get those :/

  • Learii

wait what that custom buttons assignments?

  • shogunknight

Really good features, 60fps Shareplay and Button Assignments are the best parts for me. I hope they keep on using this beta program

  • Syltique

This is all pretty good stuff, but you’d think they would add folders by now. I honestly don’t know why they’re surprised every time that we like folders.

    • Pete K

Adding a folder system isn’t some super easy one-week job, especially if they don’t want to half-ass it and want to make it work well with a decent number of options from the offset. They have a limited amount of resources and they have to implement new features with some kind of long term plan. They can’t just drop everything else to add folders if other things are already being worked on and there isn’t enough people that it’s feasible to start working on a big feature like folders. If the whole OS team is busy with big features like suspend/resume & this Trophy image sharing system, not to even mention polishing existing features that might have shown to have some bugs & adding new features into them, folders might simply be on the backburner until they can free up enough people to work on it and other stuff is functional enough.

  • Islis

Shouldn’t it be able to delete trophies at least up to 30%? Some games give you 1 trophy for just starting it…

    • NeoTechni

      No

    • Chris J Starks

Xbox has never allowed this featured. Once it’s in your queue, it’s there for good. I am going to say that Sony will follow to same paradigm here. Although I agree with you, since some of the developers skimp out on creativity/skill on achievements/trophies, we should be able to erase some at our own will. Think like the library, you can never truly delete something form your library, the code always exist so you can redownload even the crappiest of trials you got 2 years ago.

  • Travis

Man I hope it’s a lot more than this!!! I’ve waited so long for this update! it needs to have tons of new features.

  • NeoTechni

    Folders?

  • Arcade Bumstead

Handheld conveniences on a console, delicious.

  • tokyobassist

I hope we aren’t going overboard with the grievances (sorry Zero-senpai) but dang dude…I just gave the music playback feature a try with the USB method and it’s not even well implemented when the PS3 games actually allowed it. It mutes the entire game for your music opposed to just muting the background music and keeping the sound effects.

So far the PS4 does less basic things than the PS2. Can’t read CDs or DVDs. Can’t do this. Can’t do that. But hey if you have internet you can use the browser to order Jimmy John sandwiches online! WTF man!

    • Pete K

First of all, how much does the PS4 do that PS2 & PS3 could only dream of? It has fucktons of awesome features like the SharePlay and the OS is a lot smoother to use, so bitching about lack of CD support as if PS4 is somehow limited in its features is stupid and ignores the massive number of improvements over past console generations.

Second, why are you sprouting so much BS? DVDs do work on PS4 and the crap about the music player is blatantly wrong as well. If anything, the problem is that it DOESN’T mute anything in a lot of games. Some games like DriveClub do recognize that you have the music player on and the game mutes the BGM (but not sound effects) automatically, but in a lot of games you’ll have to go to the audio settings and hope that there is an option to mute the BGM (a lot of games do have that, not sure if all of them do). THe only thing you got right is the no CD support, which is somewhat of a non-issue considering how easy it is to rip MP3s and just throw them on a big USB memory stick that can easily hold hundreds or even thousands of songs.

      • tokyobassist

It’s NOT an improvement from the PS3 though and you can’t even play Blu-Ray’s or DVDs out the box without a firmware update which is ridiculous.

It has features that are new yes but it’s missing basic features out the box which is still stupid no matter what moon runes you choose to shout. I mean music playback should NOT be as complicated as you mentioned it.

        • http://www.facebook.com/nunnybunny33 nunley33

maybe so but the PS3 was in a similar state when it first launched. so many missing features people complained about but it took a few years to get them all added, sounds familar to me.

        • Pete K

It is a SUPERMASSIVE improvement over PS3 in pretty much everything but the mentioned lack of CD/music support (and a few other smaller things)., especially if we look at the OS/features in the last few months instead of still clinging to some of the issues at/near launch, which is just stupid at this point. The OS is a lot more responsive, game installs are a vast improvement, it has a lot of neat new features that PS3 didn’t have at launch nor did it ever get them during the 8+ years it’s been on the market, many of the features that PS3 did have have been improved and in general PS4’s OS/feature set is lightyears ahead of what PS3 was at this point in its lifespan. It’s a new OS completely, so it’s not perfect in any way. They can’t just carry features over from PS3 as is, they need to figure out how they fit into PS4’s OS without exceeding the limits they have set for the OS. They also needed to make some decisions as to what features they were going to focus on. They didn’t have unlimited time prior to PS4’s launch, so stuff like the music player might’ve out of the resources they could put into all the Share stuff.

Also, who gives a shit at this point if you needed to update PS4 at launch to get blu-ray support. The newer models come with more recent firmware installed so that’s not an issue anymore.

And how is the music playback complicated? You choose the song & click play, boot up the game and POSSIBLY go to the options to turn down BGM volume if the game is still playing its own BGM . That’s the way you have had to do it with PC games for ages and it takes all of 10 seconds to do. You need to really rethink your priorities in life if that small of an effort is some insurmountable issue for you. And AFAIK, it’s not that Sony is too shitty at OS development to implement a system like Xbox’s when it comes to custom soundtrack playback during games, it’s that IIRC, Microsoft might have some patents for the system so Sony has to be careful not to do anything to infringe those patents.

          • tokyobassist

            Aight then

        • Chris J Starks

My iMac didn’t come with a CD/DVD Drive, I should panic and starting bitching about it like crazy. C’mon people, technology advances. Companies are optimizing their hardware for current storage medias. We have USB 3.0, why on earth would I spend extra money on features that only 10% of the people still use? A music bargain bin cd typically costs anywhere from $7.99+ and you get usually around 20 songs maybe? Compare that to the $14.99 you pay for a 32gb usb drive and hold how many songs? I can’t remember the last time I ripped a CD, much less listened to one that wasn’t and old Nine Inch Nails Album. Think about it, Playstation does give you some freedom here. My xbox 360 would NOT play any movies I downloaded from the net, outside of the ones purchases via their service, but playstation still allows us to play almost any major file format. Still wish I could change my wallpaper though via my screenshots….don’t know why that disappeared, but I”m sure it will be re-implmented.

      • ddsfan2

On one hand, I personally far prefer having CDs over mp3s or streaming media, because there is a much larger selection of available content if your tastes are obscure, and you are simply getting more for your money in terms of the booklet, artwork, and so on.

On the other hand, the audio CD feature makes no sense on a console, unless you really want to use it as a computer. I used it once on the PS3 as a gimmick, and once on the 360 to clean the tray.

As you said, it is trivial to rip mp3s, but game consoles usually don’t support many audio formats (do they support ogg, for example? Do any of the systems play mkv files without homebrew?).

  • awesome_farts

What about the mp4 playback from flash drive???

  • PhoenixAutomatic

Awesome stuff! Thank goodness we can finally remove those 0% trophies! I hope the next update features Video Playback with any codec playable.

  • LunarHaven

AWESOME! I remember hearing about this feature long before getting a PS4 and being dissapointed that it wasn’t available, but finally it is! This will take its toll on my PS4 though because I will probably end up never turning off my console lol

  • LunarHaven

Ohyeah, and the button mapping is awesome as well, because I usually get US versions of games but I own the Hong Kong console version so I always end up messing up O and X because they are reversed in Asia.

  • Sunny

Thank goodness for the sorting trophies option!
    Will set (Not Earned)

everything sounds great and if im not mistaken spotify should launch end of this month hopefully with this update

    • Zackasaur

PlayStation Music pushed me over the edge into subscribing to Spotify.

  • Anime10121

Now THIS is a freaking update! GJ Sony! Finally bringing stuff I will actually utilize :D

  • lpchaim

So apparently Vita remote play has been revamped, seeing as it’ll require a software update to function. I wonder what has changed, might it support 60fps now as well, if only for local connections? Well, I can dream.

  • SnowVilliers

Customize Button Assignments should also be available for the PS3. I’m accustomed to “X to accept”.

  • ddsfan2

I really like both of these features, especially the button remapping, for when games have poor controls.

Suspend and resume on a home console seems like a great idea, although I wonder how buggy it will be at launch, since the PSP only had to support PS1 games for legacy content, and the Vita supported games that either already had the feature, or were designed with it in mind. I suppose that is one of the advantages of dropping backwards compatibility on the PS4.

    • Shadowriver

PS4 supports process susspens already, when you run application, game is being susspended, not closed

    • Shadowriver

Not to mention susspention does not require any support from aplication, kernel just need to stop schugleing process and it frezzes, when it backs it resumes like nothing happened, you can do that with any software, so backward compatibility has nothing to do with it. Only risk is time hacking, as frozzen application may have no idea that time changed.

      • ddsfan2

Well, aside from the fact that stateful network applications don’t have transactional semantics (at least some parts of multiplayer would be lost if they suspended during an online match), you are right, at least in terms of dumping the contents of memory on to a suspend partition.

That being said, I’ve had tons of problems with suspend and resume not working consistently on Windows PCs, but that’s more of a crappy driver that the OS vendor isn’t taking responsibility for, whereas Sony has full control over the full hardware and driver stack on the PSP, Vita, PS4, etc…

  • devilmaycry0917

    a sweet major update

  • soul_710

Damn, thats a major update….does the button remapping apply to just the UI or for everything in general?

  • Daimyo_VP

I just hope the next update allows us to delete a trophies despite what percent it is. I would just like my profile to reflect games I actually play. They can even put “are sure you want to delete this(Yes or No option)” or “enter password to delete(Password option)”.

    • BioShock

Don’t think we will ever see that, there is a chance that someone might steal/hack your account and delete everything.

      • Daimyo_VP

I see your point ,but there is always a risk. A person can hack someone profile and delete their saved files(If PSPlus Member). I’m not trying to seem like a wise-ass or anything ,but when a person hacks they’re usually after money or something else then semi-personal things such as trophies and saved files. But, then again in today society they are a bunch of pricks out there that are unpredictable and would cause mayhem on a person profile just for the thrill. I still would like it to be a option, even though I understand the risk. I just hope Sony build a better security system or infrastructure in the near future.

    • SliferRed

That would completely ruin the trophy system.

      • Daimyo_VP

I see your point. Hell, I even pay a buck or two to remove some of them.

  • Daimyo_VP

I just want the ability to delete my trophies no matter the percentage. Trophy system won’t be ruin if I want to delete games I no longer like. It would just reflect what games I actually play and like. Welcome Home(Ps Vita-47%),LittleBigPlanet(PS3-27%),Bleach Soul Resurrecion(PS3-0%) are just the ones I want to delete. I like my stuff to look neat and reflect games I appreciate. There has been few people to tell me, someone can hack your profile and delete your trophy and ruin your profile. I in all my PS3 lifespan has not been hacked(except in the infamous 2011 Playstation Network Outage). So the chance of a person hacking your profile and deleting your trophy list is kind of hard but not IMPOSSIBLE. I seen in numerous forums that people GAVE others they’re PSN info. The risk is the same with someone hacking to gain your credit/debit card information. If there are some people that would like to argue why it should not, please comment. I would like to see another person perceptive of things.

  • Stu Parker

And Yet…No DLNA support out of the box like PS3, and yet still no support for flash videos….I am glad I am getting a PS3….

    • iTechHeads

wtf are you talking about? you can already do that. for years now.

      • Jeffrey Fitzpatrick

I guess you don’t have a PS4? It’s only possible with the PS3. I hate streaming HD content but that is what I’m forced to do with my PS4.

        • iTechHeads

          Of course I have a PS4.
I just assumed you could download/stream.

I’ll take your word for it though. May I suggest you upgrade your internet connection? Or even better, download movies via torrents. It’s free.

          • Jeffrey Fitzpatrick

Suggestions aren’t too plausible in Canada. Crapy service nationwide and torrenting is is closely observed in Saskatchewan.
I’ll just stick with my PS3 and Sony handhelds for now.

            • http://www.hush404.com hush404

*Blinks at you from my 150mbps fiber op connection and questions your nation wide ‘crappy service’ comment. That said, I know what its like dealing with a horrible connection, but if you have a PS3 capable of that feature, just use that?

              • Jeffrey Fitzpatrick

I admit I exaggerated with the nationwide comment. I’m currently not using my PS3 as it is with my sister at a different city. I’ll just play the waiting game for Sony to develop the common sense of making movies downloadable.

                • http://www.hush404.com hush404

Ouch. Tough spot. Hard to say if they’ll go that route tho. Most stuff is moving to streaming.

I already posted about this in another forum…

First bug I found with this PS4 2.50 update. Everything was great before the 2.50 update, but now… After PS4 is put to stand-by (sleep) mode, and after I wake it up, it switches to completely different screen resolution. It’s not 1080p anymore as I have it set in my settings, but something very weird, vertically stretched out. I wasn’t trying to put it to rest mode with apps/games running, I did it from the dashboard, simply wanted my system to go to sleep.
I have never had this problem before. My PS4 is connected using original PS4 HDMi cable to 1080p LED LCD monitor. Even though I was sure it’s not the cable, I’ve tested another HDMI cable I have laying around, with same results. It looks like this update caused PS4 wake up into some weird resolution after being in sleep mode. Definitely something screwed up that will require another update very soon.

I found that having KEEP APPLICATION SUSPENDED option enabled causes this problem. Yes, that feature they bragged about so much… it does not work. People reporting that it broke some of their game saves etc, even some games having nasty trouble with it. Even worse, PS4 itself suffers from that option. It’s in SETTINGS / POWER SAVE SETTINGS / SET FUNCTIONS AVAILABLE IN REST MODE. Once I turned it off, resolution problem after the wake-up is gone, all back to normal. If others are experiencing same or similar thing, I guess SONY it’s time for fixing this and releasing a patch for their latest patch :)

Shareplay doesn’t work after firmware 2.5
