New characters "rougher around the edges" than their predecessors. "On the run for doing what they think is right."

Persona 5

Following its debut gameplay trailer at Persona Super Live, Persona 5 director and producer Katsura Hashino has taken to both the official Persona website and Weekly Famitsu to discuss more about the upcoming RPG sequel.

Get the details below.

Weekly Famitsu Interview

This is an excerpt from an interview in next week’s issue of Weekly Famitsu. Stay tuned to next week for more information about the protagonist and his persona, his friends, and the game’s systems.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything new. How’s development coming along?

Hashino: Things are really coming along and we’re starting to hit our quality benchmarks in terms of what goes into the game, so at this stage, we’re hard at work building the game and fleshing it out. We’re just as eager to bring this game out finally so they can enjoy what all we’ve been working on and day by day, we’re getting closer to the finish line. It’s just going to be a little while longer now before it’s here.

During our last interview, I remember you talking about how you wanted this game to depict things like the cathartic feelings that come from freeing yourself of your own chains in life and being ale to yell out to the world you’re free. Now that we know more about the game, I’d like to ask you to elucidate about the themes of the game again.

Hashino: I don’t think it’s a stretch to say in this day and age that there are a lot of people out there who feel like they aren’t moving forward, that they have no future, and carry a lot of weight on their shoulders every day. They’re stuck between a rock and a hard place, emotionally speaking; on the one hand, they might not be keen on living by the same rules and values that defined previous generations, while still lacking the will to go out and actually break those barriers down themselves. That dark side of society is a central pillar to the game we want to make with Persona 5.

In the midst of all that, though, you got these high school punks who are trying to bite back at a world that’s trying to pin them down. If our game can give people a little courage to keep going in their day to day lives, to face things head on and do something with themselves, then we’ll have done our jobs here.

But the main characters… are they thieves!?

Hashino: It’s interesting you refer to them in that way specifically because one of the things that inspired us to make this question to begin with was how, say, a classic, iconic thief in the vein of Lupin III might win the hearts and minds of people in today’s day and age if they were out running around today. There have been a lot of books and films over the years that explored the sorts of lives that thieves live and how they’re able to shake up the world with what many would perceive to be sheer brazenness, but that’s not ground that’s very well covered in games and we intend to rectify that. We want our players to be able to empathize with these characters and enjoy seeing what they get themselves into and we’re giving it everything we’ve got to make sure that comes through loud and clear in the final game.

Persona Channel Message

Good evening, everyone. This is Hashino from the Persona Team. It’s been a long time coming, but we’ve finally started showing you some proper footage from Persona 5. What do you make of it so far? The trailer hasn’t been put out yet as I write this, so, to be honest, I’m actually feeling a little on edge about how people will react to it. If we get people to stand up and take notice, especially in terms of the overt thievery and what we’re paying homage to, then we’re on the right track. As long as there’s something that gets everyone even just a little existing, I’ll be content.

In a nutshell, if I were trying to explain what this game is trying to evoke, I’d say it’s like if you took something like a picaresque novel and then threw in, for lack of a better word, realistic, down to earth “academy juveniles.” In previous Persona games, the stories revolved around pretty traditional heroes going after villains that most anyone one would be loath to associate themselves with; they pursued the bad guys for the sake of justice, essentially. This time around, though, the protagonists of Persona 5 themselves are on the run for doing what they think is right after something happens completely out of the blue. That mixture of thrills and not-so-larger-than-life cast of characters is what composes the idea of “academy juveniles” for us. We think that these characters that are going to be a little rougher around the edges than those who have come before them in the series, coupled with the strides we’ve made in visual and sound design we can pull off something really special here.

Even more so than before, I feel like we’re pouring our hearts into this game. As an Atlus game, we try to make games that stand out amongst the crowd, but put in another light, individuality of that sort isn’t always a blessing per se. It can mean diverging from what’s normal, break from the rules, project the image of trouble, especially when applied to people. But to us, individuality in people isn’t purely good or bad; rather it’s something that has the power to change how people think and act when they’re touched by it. We might live in a world that’s less than accommodating to a lot of us and hard to live in. But so long as people don’t give up on reaching out to one another, the individuality that shines both at the individual level and from groups as a whole can help us break through that feeling of oppression and feel free. This is a game we really want to walk the walk and we hope from the bottom of our hearts that it’ll leave a mark on people after it’s all said and done.

We want to put out the best game we can, so we’re counting on you to keep supporting us as we bring this thing to life! (Make sure to tell us everything you have to say on Twitter, your blogs, wherever!)

Thanks!

No thank you guys for giving us good quality games. Literally each Persona has been amazing.

    • MrFinalgamer

P1, and 4 want a talk with you about all being amazing…

      • Anime10121

I actually thought 1 was amazing too (less so than 2 and 3 mind you, but still great) >_>

        • Budgiecat

I just wish the PSP remake wasnt such a lazy job

          • Anime10121

It just made me feel like I was actually playing a proper version of the original PSone game (well, with “modernized” music). I didnt really have too much of an issue with it outside of starting it an getting used to a first person dungeon crawler.

            • Budgiecat

well I did. I wanted to play as proper 3D character models of the 3D character models in the cutscenes :p

Well at least now we can finally do that in P5. No more shortcuts. Its good to be alive. :p

              • Anime10121

Agreed it is! Cant wait for this, though much like Xenoblade, The Phantom Pain, XV, and other highly anticipated games…I’ll have to since no western release dates yet :(

                • Budgiecat

Surely and slowly Japan is finally moving out of the PS1 & PS2 era of game design! About time!

                  • Anime10121

                    This….is such a beautiful thing too :3

                    • Budgiecat

                      damn slowpokes!

                    • Anime10121

Now lets just hope they keep up the pace…

      • Bobby Jennings

4’s my favorite honestly, but I’ve only played 3 and 4.

        • Anime10121

You need to play Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment…like rite NAOAW :V

          • Bobby Jennings

Once I get some PSN moneh, I’ma pick it up digital and give it a try.

      • HellKaiser

And 3 is? It’s overrated as heck. It started amazing and went downhill. I just wanted to finish it by the end.

P4 is my favorite. Best cast and gameplay.

        • Anime10121

I want to lolnope your opinion so bad…but its yours, so you can shape it how you please…I however would like to say I STRONGLY disagree with you on that tho

        • MrFinalgamer

You call P3 overrated, and praise P4, the most overrated in the series, easily. P3 has its problems, but I can easily find more problems in P4, with its uneeven tone, no character development after their dungeon’s done, and just a meh story all around (I could go super in depth, but I’m typing on a phone). So yes, I easily consider P4 worse, than P3, without a doubt.

        • SMTGamer

4 is my favorite but there’s no way in hell that P3 is overrated.

  • SiXXXtySiXXX

“We think that these characters that are going to be a little rougher around the edges than those who have come before them in the series”

    All of my yes.

  • Bobby Jennings

No, thank you Atlus. I wouldn’t even have paid attention to Persona if it wasn’t for that PSP release. That just got me into the series as a whole, and I saw just how much I was missing. Back then I thought only Final Fantasy was great, but as I played other JRPGS and RPGS alike, I started to branch off and Persona helped me find my stride.

Really looking forward to this. I’m happy it isn’t delayed either.

    • Davorbasic

I’m completely confused cause your tone says scolding

Thanks for the coverage guys. You did a terrific job!

    • Ping

      rest well :)

  • Nodoka Miyazaki

So Lupin mh huh…That’s really interesting…And maybe you can select who should die now?

  • Revorse

“On the run for doing what they think is right”
I’m pretty sure they did something to piss off a deity.

  • MrFinalgamer

Law (philemon), Chaos (nyarly), and neutral routes plz!!!

    That aside, game looks amazing!

  • http://Gematsu.com Vayne

I look forward to scour every place in town that offers the game.

  • Darji

The context of the game sounds great. I like the more “edgy” feel of being not a “good” person but believing in your own justice and morals. I also hope there will be lots of social interactions like n previous games. That was the part which I like the most in Persona games.

  • HellKaiser

Looks like It’s coming out late 2015.

    • http://www.guidingtech.com/ Alvaro Bernedo

Definitely. If P4D is coming out in June, I am guessing P5 will be releasing on winter in Japan.

      • Orichalon Hades

        >in japan

        its a worldwide release bruh

        • HellKaiser

          Really?

          • Orichalon Hades

yeah, i remember reading about it on either Sony Conference or TGS.

            its either of those two

        • Elphelt

Citation needed. I can’t find anything apart from the fact that both are releasing in 2015 =/

        • http://www.guidingtech.com/ Alvaro Bernedo

You have a link to a source?

But you might be right anyway, since this is Atlus’ biggest release in years.

        • astrogamer

I don’t recall seeing that it’s a simultaneous worldwide release, just that they planned to release in the West presumably in the same year. The game has probably delayed a bit from the original plan. If Atlus USA still doesn’t have the script for the game, then I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have the Western release in early 2016 with game coming out in japan in Fall 2015

  • باندي

if i remember it right there were 5 chairs with handcuffs so it should be 5 characters but we only see 3 beside the cat

    • Davorbasic

The guy with the lollipop might be playable

      • باندي

I really hope there more playable characters

  • ManagedCorn

Hashino makes lovely letters to the fans. Hes a nice guy.

  • Shogun

its a Honor to be playing another persona game ^^

  • PrinceHeir

Nice! It does gave me that Lupin feeling, but we haven’t seen why they’re stealing in the first place.

I hope there’s some customization for character appearance. Would love to wear different kinds of cape and all.

  • Blackhook

I wouldn’t mind Atlus rereleasing the Persona series on PC/Steam in celebration of P5

    • Sunny

Dude Persona series was always a Playstation exclusive series they’re not gonna bring this to PC smh stop begging..

      • AmewTheFox

        *coughcoughPersonaqcough*

        • Sunny

LOL a Spinoff! Huge difference dude..

          • AmewTheFox

No. There isn’t. It’s less spin-off than Persona is to MegaTen. Besides, there are a number of games under the MegaTen flag that were published on Japanese cell phones, and I’m not talking about what we refer to as “mobile games”. I believe there were..four? Five? of them under “Persona”, including Aigis: The First Mission, Persona Online, a “between story” of Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

Shh shh, japanese developers have been better about porting things lately. So don’t give up hope.

      • Blackhook

Like mentioned, there is already Persona Q, so there is always hope and honestly, would be a better deal for them than PSP ports. But eh, one can dream

        • Elphelt

I don’t think Atlus agreed to anything in regards to exclusivity. They seemed pretty fine with releasing Persona Q on 3DS and P4A on 360. It might just be that they developed P5 on PS3 only because 360 had no presence in Japan (and to save costs), with PS4 development being done later due to high demand (as well as to maintain relevance in the market).

I think PC is a possibility. However, Atlus probably do not have much experience with PC ports, so I imagine they might outsource the development for it.

          • Darji

JRPGS have gotten a lot of stéam on the PC. I am pretty sure you will see FFXV there too. So P5 should not be impossible later the line. I also reeally hope for P4 golden for PC too^^

            • EX+

              Well, too bad.

            • Ali Hassan

I’m so tired of PC Gamers going to every god damn article ever made and begging for console ports. Its pathetic and really fucking annoying. Buy the console if you want to play the game or shut the hell up. PcMasterRace? Na, PcBeggingRace

        • Sunny

That’s a spinoff, this is the main franchise, learn the difference

        • ayanami-chan

That’s bc it was an Etrian Odyssey game

          • EX+

A pretty mediocre one apparently too.

            • ayanami-chan

              NOOOOO it was fine.

    • Guest

I know… PC gamer don’t demand P3 and p4 for PC because they run in PCSX2. That game now demand… ok

    • http://www.spaghetti.com/ Kaisenex

pc mustard race dont need those games. why do i constantly see the pc “master” race beg for pc ports?

      • Elle

And the most logical conclusion would be to releasd a collection on ps3/ps4 since it’s only on those lol

    • EX+

      No thanks.

    • ayanami-chan

      Nope.

    • SiXXXtySiXXX

And I’m just over here with my Xbone and 360 like

      http://i.imgur.com/oMeNdJX.gif

    • Davorbasic

      No

  • Zackasaur

    So… Robin Hood protagonists?

Because I would freaking LOVE that.

    • Darji

No. Robin Hood stole to give it the poor. This is not the case here.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

Well they’re stealing to spite the oppressive system they live in so I think that sort of counts.

        • Darji

But they are not doing this to help the society. I think that is the main difference here.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

That sort of fall along the line of “But they steal to give back”.
That doesn’t really change the fact that they’re trying to get back at a bigger evil by doing it.

      • Zackasaur

        Aw. :c

I would like to agree with their cause. :P Vengeance is also a lot of fun to play.

      • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

Sure, but I’m not sure it was always that simple.

  • Nodoka Miyazaki
    • MyBodyIsReady

      It begins. Lol

    • MrFinalgamer

And this is one of the many things I HATE about the fanbase (and easily the most annoying).

      • Darji

why? Because of drawn art? really?

        • MrFinalgamer

          Waifu shit. Its already starting.

          • Darji

Yeah its really bad if people like characters and show their “love” for them. How old are you 50? Let people enjoy what they want and if you dont like it ignore it instead of trying to put people down.

            • MrFinalgamer

When a good portion of the fanbase, and “discussion” devolves into waifu shit, its hard to ignore.

              • EX+

But why should it bother anyone?

                • MrFinalgamer

                  Its annoying as hell.

                  • Kobracon

I agree with you on the Waifu Wars being annoying as all HELL. But I think theres a time and a place to express that and I believe its NOT towards this fanart. Its just a picture of the girl, If you were responding to some giant discussion over Best Gurl, then I would totally agree with your initial post, but this is just fanart, something that can easily be the best part of ANY fanbase because there are fans out there with amazing talent who can produce some REALLY cool pictures.

              • Darji

No it is not…. You just making a big deal out of it. Its not even bad drawn fanart. Seriously….

                • Lara Croft

He just said the Wifu stuff bothers him. THAT’S IT. Why you so bothered about what he likes and doesn’t? Just let it go.

                  • Darji

No he Insulted and attacked these people. That is why I am bothered by it. Maybe it was deleted but still that does not give him the right to insult people because of something he does not like or things is creepy etc

                    • Lara Croft

If he insulted or attacked, then I agree. That’s taking it to far.

          • SiXXXtySiXXX

It’s a JRPG with anime graphics and dating-sim elements. The fuck you think was going to happen? :P

          • EX+

Are you serious? How long have you been exposed to anime? Since last night or something?

            • MrFinalgamer

It being a thing for a long time doesn’t make it better, mate.

              • EX+

That’s definitely not what I’m saying.
I’m just saying that it really shouldn’t bother you much.

                • MrFinalgamer

For better, or worse (and it appears to be for the worst), it really annoys me…

                  • SiXXXtySiXXX

You aren’t alone. Lots of people really can’t stand waifu shit.

It just so happens that none of them post on Gematsu apparently.

                    • Cocteau

I find waifu stuff really annoying as well, but I don’t think a picture like this really corresponds with it as much as you think.

Now if the person who drew this took a selfie of himself with his drawing framed above his bed… that would annoy me.

                    • Budgiecat

hey I dun like the waifu shitz

                    • SiXXXtySiXXX

Great. Now the two of you can talk about how much you hate waifus and be the bestest of friends.

                    • Budgiecat

so you liek the waifu shitz?

                    • SiXXXtySiXXX

                      Asuka is my waifu.

                      http://i.imgur.com/xrbitMr.gif

But no, I think anime is pretty shitty in general, so my distaste of waifus is a given.

                    • Budgiecat

Anime is not shitty you dont give it enough of a chance. The fact you gave Kill La Kill a chance as well as Evangelion, an Anime of which a friend of mine who I showed it to 10 years ago who does not watch Anime, still will not let me live it down to that “godawful ending” which he absolutely detested, is evidence enough that you think there is legit Anime out there because there are many examples of Anime far greater than even Evangelion and Kill L Kill.
The problem is two fold: the current Anime scene IS shit, mainly moe shit, it’s devolved from the glory it used to be; and the fanbase is riddled with Otaku losers and shut ins, which makes it all the more embarrassing to say “I like Anime”.
                      Especially if you’re Miyazaki.
Although this obliviance and disassociation can be also be found in Western comic fans, baseball card collectors, Bronies, Furries (which includes Sonic Fans), Twilight fans, GLEE fans, figurine collectors, LARP’ers, and other such hobbies with embarassing butt adults. Star Wars vs Star Trek fans, LotR fans, Harry Potterheads, and yes gamers.
But as you can see with games, there is good among the crap, so one cannot say video games suck when there are gems among the shovelware..

                    • MrFinalgamer

My honest problem with anime nowdays is that, as an art form, it can be SO much more (it has been before), but we’re stuck with this one simple thing…and saddly, this makes a ton of money, and the more risky stuff is less watched. Animated flicks in the west had this problem for ages. Family movies had this problem for the longest time (catering toward the smallest of kids, with non intelligent humor), thankfully, we’re now moving pass that, with more intelligent films being made, but anime has yet to move passed this moe bump.

                    • SiXXXtySiXXX

Lots of these anime would be better as hentai. I get no enjoyment watching the protagonist of To Love Ru get blue-balled for 25 minutes.

                    • Budgiecat

                      exactly

                    • Darji

And I dont like cats`So what? Deal with it.

                    • Budgiecat

I can tell when you’re lying. Stop it.

                • Budgiecat

Its a new game that is looking more serious than P4 ever was and he just doesnt want it devolving into a P4 milk fetish for fat Otakus still wishing they can suck on their mommas boobs

                  • Darji

you have no idea about this series do you? PS3 was dark and he games before were really dark. Also insulting other people for stuff you do not agree with is a very childish way to look at things. Maybe you should grow up first.

                    • Budgiecat

                      WHO THIS??

            • Budgiecat

Here’s the thing: why doesnt it happen as much in other games? not even a day passed and yes this pic is tame but I think he means it’ll only get worse. fan is short for fanatic and too many foreveralone fanatics that gravitate to this and bring the credibility of the series down with their one sided desperate for fictional love obsessions.

          • Kaien

You may want to shut yourself in a cave. Just to be sure not to see people enjoy things you don’t like.

            • MrFinalgamer

              What? That doesn’t make sense.

Way to take things out of context. He only said he doesn’t like wifu things. Everyone is allowed to say and express things they don’t like. So what, now you can’t express yourself and talk about things that bother you?? Everyone likes something that others don’t, and it’s natural to express it. How you take it is up to you.

              • Kaien

Hating the fanbase and waifu things is taking that fan-made drawing out of context.

Of course he’s allowed to speak. Freedom of speech means you don’t get arrasted, not that your opinion is not laughable.

And yes, I know my harsh reaction was laughable too, as well as my english writing skills.

Speaking for myself, I don’t hate people just because they like things I don’t like. Or at least I try not to do it. Do people deserve to be hated just because they like harmless but unpopular things?

                • Lara Croft

I don’t hate anyone for having a different taste than me. Hell, half of my close friends don’t like what I like. Including video games. All I’m saying is that, he just said the Wifu stuff bothers him. As far as I know, he isn’t hating on anyone. He is only expressing he view on the art. There will always be people who hate what u like and vice verse. Anyway, didn’t mean to offend you or anything. Cheers.

      • Sunny

what a stupid thing to say this happens with all big games dummy

        • MrFinalgamer

Not the fan art. The waifu crap that comes with it.

      • http://www.spaghetti.com/ Kaisenex

i think the exact opposite. it’s kind of amazing.

      • Nesther

This is the most illogical thing I’ve read all week. Congratulations.

          How is it illogical???

So it’s ok to make fun of COD, a game millions of people like. But when it comes to your own convenience, it’s illogical.

      • Cocteau

meh, as long as its respectful to source material and well-drawn I don’t see anything wrong with people creating this stuff for their own enjoyment.

      • PuppetMaster

As long as the fans not turn into maniac that threatening to kill the producer / director / character designer like some Tales fans who can’t accept their waifu didn’t have enough playing time in Zestiria, than i don’t see anything wrong with a piece of fans arts like this.

    Sold, I’ll take 20.

  • new_tradition

I really hope they show consequences for what the characters do. It’s so easy to throw a romantic vigilante coat on them without showing who they hurt beyond the “evil” people. There’s a lot of little people that deal with the collateral damage who sometimes don’t deserve it :/

    • Cocteau

Watch Dogs is the most hilarious example of this.

  • Shippoyasha

Considering he is a David Fincher fan, I’m sure there will be a lot of character drama mixed in. Though unlike Fincher movies, he will have to figure out how costumed thieves will help influence society. Maybe the enemy in this game is not just the demons, but maybe they have literally infiltrated the social order (such as media, police and government) and they need to utilize phantom thieves to try to break through that aspect of society + fighting demons.

      • Fruity_Rider

Atlus re-used the same demon models in all the ps2 games, having these new models will probably make easier for them to make new games.

      • lpchaim

Well, I think it is true they’ve reused the demon models in every 3D SMT entry so far since their inception. Who knows, it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

  • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

I’m not ok with playing criminals but if they’re not really bad people I can be okay with it. I don’t see the appeal with cat burglars since I often think of times I was robbed. But this is a stylish and cool game. I hope to get it on PS4 as soon as possible.

    • Jay

I think they’re more Robin Hood than OJ Simpson.

      • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

        Fair.

    • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

If you have seen Lupin III, I think that should give you a good idea.

It’s not so much that the characters are bad people or even criminals. They get that label based upon the rules and laws of society.

Some of which many people disagree with. Some see these laws, rules, and restrictions, as taking away freedom.

I think it’s also about society and labels in regards to money. If you have money you typically are treated like royalty, or a “good” person.

When in reality, it’s often times these rich “good” people doing awful things, things that others without money, resources, etc. would never do.

It’s a fine line. You have criminals who commit unspeakable acts, sometimes because they are sick, sometimes because they are desperate and poor, and sometimes they are simply evil.

The people with money committing these acts typically do so because they can. They have the power, the resources, money, and even the “labels” to protect them.

      I think that’s pretty evil.

Characters like Lupin, they fall in the middle. They steal for many reasons, sometimes personal, sometimes to help, other times to send a message.

You can’t hold me down with these rules of society. You can label me whatever you want, but I follow my own path, I’m free.

      • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

I can understand that. I don’t like rich elites using their money to get away with cruelty or manipulation of others. But I can’t be ok with someone stealing something unless it’s to feed their family. If I had something I worked hard for and someone stole it I’d be mad. It reminds me when I had a new bike and got robbed of it just because the guy saw me having fun on it. My bother got it back but that’s when I learned people will do bad things just out of jealousy and hate. Or that was one of the clearest examples of extreme selfishness. And to me exteme selfishness is real evil. But as far as I can tell P5 is gonna have a point. Its not gonna be about running about getting away with acts of mischief and cruelty.

        • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

Yeah, I don’t think it would be that type of thievery.

  • Jay

You can feel his passion through the text; that’s a very good sign. And after seeing that trailer, I have no reason not to believe he’ll deliver something amazing.

  • PuppetMaster

“In the midst of all that, though, you got these high school punks who are trying to bite back at a world that’s trying to pin them down.”

Like my other post, i can’t wait to play as a party of bad boys and girls and…err bad cat (?). It’s more interesting rather than just saving the world from nazi’s / gods or trying to discover their true self, this one trying to blur the line between bad and good like Robin Hood / Lupin :3

    • http://www.santashi.com/ Santashi

While I do love the look of this game, I wouldn’t put down P2’s rumour plot. I found it interesting and clever, personally, and pretty original for the time. ;)

But anyway, I am also excited to play as a cat :P

      • PuppetMaster

It would be cool if Atlus put back the rumour system again for P5. It’s really suitable with the Robin Hood / Lupin theme.

EVERY JRPG you’re always teenager. Why can’t we have crazy shit happen to a Salary man?

Like the target audience of these games really wants to play as a middle-aged guy. C’mon now.

      • Guy Incognito

most of the people playing these games are nearing middle age

        • Budgiecat

The philosophy behind Japanese gaming demographic marketing is to try to appeal to a broad range of demographics while not alienating one.
Since common Japanese gamer sensibilities is to accept the role of a youthful MC and cast, as opposed to the less than usual older main cast seen in many Western games which would no doubt turn off the younger demographic and female gamers, who are not used to such things.
So overall there is a much more acceptance by the older Japanese gaming crowd to play as a younger protagonists while in Western gaming, developers have not focused on younger casts as much, so flipping the script on both sides would no doubt be a culture shock, so both regions play it safe in those regards by not breaking the status quo tropes

          • Guy Incognito

        • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

I do think Atlus kinda did fill that void with Catherine. That wasn’t really a role playing game but still. I suppose you could count party members in Tales of and such that are middle aged too.

          • Guy Incognito

            Yeah that wasn’t the same

    • PuppetMaster

      Every JRPG you say?
      – Parasite Eve main protag Aya Brea is a 25 year old grown up woman
      – Most Front Mission main protag are veteran soldiers

I can give you more examples of JRPG where you don’t play as a teenagers. But…you sure you want to play as a salary man with tons of problems from hair loss, asshole boss / co-workers, or their wife and kids demanding expensive stuff?

      • http://waifubartending.com Kiririn51

        yeah i kind of want

No problem. But don’t tell me your gonna kickstarter a JRPG with salary man as a main protag? If yes than don’t forget to credit my name ok :p

      • Guy Incognito

Parasite even isn’t really a JRPG so much as it’s a hybrid survival horror game.

        Front Mission is an SRPG

        • PuppetMaster

Both title came from japanese dev and used some JRPG element. So yes both are an JRPG.

JRPG also never completely about classic turn based or playing as teenagers. Example like Tales of series, Ys series, Valkyria Chronicles series, Kingdom Heart series, Disgaea series, Vagrant Story, and many RPG from japan that didn’t use classic turn-based battles. If you say those titles aren’t JRPG than you need to fix your definition of JRPG.

          • Guy Incognito

            Survival Horror

            • PuppetMaster

You don’t have anything to debate, so why bother replaying me?

      • Budgiecat

There was a set of Nintendo DS games like this; not RPG’s but ADV/point and click. pretty funny series; forget the name of it since it was one of those long ass Japanese titles..

        • PuppetMaster

Hmn NDS…point and click…the only titles that pop up in my mind are 999, Ace Attorney, and Prof Layton. But it dosen’t fit your description of pretty funny series. I guess that game didn’t have an english release…

          • Budgiecat

No it didnt. It, like Megaman DS games and Pokemon, had a simultaneous 3 game release afaik. had some dating sim elements in it

    • MrFinalgamer

Play Persona 2 then. Crazy shit did happen to a salary man, and…let’s just say that it’s a nice twist. ;)

      • Guy Incognito

        Which half?

        • MrFinalgamer

Both to get the best story, but if you want the business man thing (technically lawyer, but details) with a nice twist, then Eternal Punishment, the only game in the series to feature adults only that have the wonderful jobs of: Extortionist, Detective, a jobless woman, a reporter, and a young dude (Innocent Sin has 2 reporters, if that sounds interesting to you)

          • Guy Incognito

Both got the PSP Remake treatment right?

            • MrFinalgamer

Yes, but we never got EP, which ssucks a lot, since it had a brand new story arc. =/

              • Guy Incognito

:( so fan translations it is then

    • Budgiecat

Well there was Kung Fu Rider but that was an on rails PS Move game :p

      • Guy Incognito

        I’d play that

  • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

Looks like many of my guesses were on point. The thievery elements, going against the rules of society, even my Lupin III vibe was right.

Of course, I built all of my guesses from the trailer and past info given. I’m quite happy about it. I don’t really care about my guesses, I’m excited about this kind of game.

I think the themes of the game just really connect with me.

“As an Atlus game, we try to make games that stand out amongst the crowd, but put in another light, individuality of that sort isn’t always a blessing per se. But so long as people don’t give up on reaching out to one another, the individuality that shines both at the individual level and from groups as a whole can help us break through that feeling of oppression and feel free.”

This. Just this. All of my yes. I need this game asap.

    • MrFinalgamer

I was (semi) right about my Clockwork Orange parallels too! Now, what I’m hopping they’ll do is for this to not be one sided. Like, while they break rules they thing are being too restrictive, I would like to see them being a bit too loose on the rules, and learn how those rules, while they might seem restrictive on the surface, are actually needed on this society to not go into chaos. Basically, I would like them to mature throughout the game, and learn how some rules are needed, but due to their age, they feel like they’re being restrictive. Showing two sides of the coin is always a good thing to do IMO.

Also, seeing the repricutions of their actions to innocents would be interesting too. And just like others have said, this game might rely on the “Law & Chaos” thing from SMT. Like, the main characters seem to be leaning towards the Chaos side, but seeing an alignment system with Philemon, and Nyarly would be super nice.

      • Kobracon

That would be great! SMT IV had interesting themes and they make it very clear that both is needed, but the Law and Chaos endings were completely one sided (well I suppose they are like that coz they are specific endings).

But if they lead to a more balanced, neutral ending in P5, that would be nice.

        • MrFinalgamer

Well yeah, that’s the point of Law & Chaos. Both are extremely one sided, since both are extremely…extremist. That’s why Neutral is the best, but hardest ending, to get (but who cares about that!? Lucifer, and anarchy all the way! WOOOOOO!)

          • Kobracon

So…then would be okay if the game goes Neutral as that seems to be the balance you wanted.

            • MrFinalgamer

Oh no, what I want is for the game itself to show things on a gray matter, not just black, and white. The alignments on SMT do that perfectly by showing how Law doesn’t equal good, or how Chaos doesn’t equal bad. I want that sort of gray area to be present, especially with the characters being delinquents, and them being young. People at that age think highly of themselves, and that they’re above certain rules, or that they’re stupid, but as they grow, they learn the importance of those rules. I want them to show that naivety on the cast (seeing as they’re still high schoolers).

              • Kobracon

Oh right, you want it to be present throughout the game, alright. That would be cool, but personally don’t see them going for Law, Chaos, Neutral endings and just have regular multiple endings based on story.

                • MrFinalgamer

Maybe they’ll pull a P1, and have 2 different sets of endings, with 2 entirely different quests, based on which endgame thing you do, and what you chose, ala P4, and 3 (depending on what you choose at a certain points, you get bad ending SEBEC, if you chose correctly, you get to do SEBEC quest, or do the Snow Queen quest with its own set of good, and bad endings, depending on whether you get enough “collectibles”). It would be a nice incentive to get all endings, since Snow Queen, and SEBEC are different end bosses, stories, and dungeons.

                  • Kobracon

Maybe. Oh btw, which route should I go for FIRST in P1? Snow Queen or SEBEC?

                    • MrFinalgamer

Snow Queen is a bit harder, and longer, than SEBEC, plus SEBEC is the cannon route, so do that one first. Also, beware that in order to have Reiji on your team you need to do some dumb obtuse stuff. I’m talking about “P4 random questions = true ending” dumb, and obtuse. Also, there’s some “moral choices” that determine whether you get the bad ending, or the choice for the 2 quests, so keep an eye on those, and answer them correctly (by correctly, I mean the obviously good thing to do).

              • Darji

But this is exactly why the whole society is so oppressing to them. What I hope is hat they make rather more fun of things like Social justice and over sensibility of today’s society and how restrictive stupid rules are. Also It is a theme about how friendship helps to survive in such a society which is great as well.

Its about breaking free of norms and standards. they are not going out and kill people but rather try to have their own justice and morals.

    • Jason Robert McMahan

And I was…well not right because I was just hoping, but about them bringing back the melee weapon and gun weapon system from Persona 1.

  • SMTGamer

So will there be more characters or is that it because if there’s only three then I’m definitely calling P5 MC Harry Potter.

    • Mr.Sammich

There was someone in what looked like a Tanuki suit in the animated part of the trailer who wasn’t showed anywhere but there, it’s safe to assume that there will be more. 7 (including the first three) if the Seven Sins theory pans out. I’m just repeating myself now ;P

      • Kumomeme

surely Atlus wont reveal all of them now…

    • Budgiecat

      Harry Pothead

    • Jason Robert McMahan

Yes, there is a ‘party’ option on the main menu for switching party members. Makes me wonder if we’ll be able to switch them in dungeons or if thats just so we don’t have to talk to them individually anymore.

  • Guardian Byakko

Will there be a group of playable characters at least the size of Persona 4 or is it limited to those four (Persona 2 kinda) is one of my concerns?

    • Mr.Sammich

There was someone in what looked like a Tanuki suit in the animated part of the trailer who wasn’t showed anywhere but there, it’s safe to assume that there will be more. 7 (including the first three) if the Seven Sins theory pans out.

      • Guardian Byakko

“Seven Sins Theory” can you elaborate?

        • Mr.Sammich

There’s a part in the trailer that shows Morgana (the cat) and, for a split second, it shows the Latin words for the Seven Deadly Sins, as well as Cavum (hollow), over her then it drops down to just saying Luxuria (lust) Persona. If it’s assumed that each character is either based on one of the sins (with MC being Cavum, hollow has been used to describe those with the Wild Card) or that their Persona is, that equals 7 party members besides the MC.

          • Guardian Byakko

I see…that is a pretty interesting theory. Went back and saw what you meant, but I don’t know latin so thanks for explaining. I hope the theory proves true, and does the mc have multiple available weapons like p3 mc in fes?

            • Mr.Sammich

More like a “main” weapon and a firearm, like in the first Persona game :)
The MC uses knives and handguns, Ryuji Sakamoto (blonde guy/skull mask) uses blunt objects and shotguns, Anne Takamaki uses a whip and we don’t know what her sub is, and Morgana uses swords and slingshots (that cat is so cute) :3

              • Guardian Byakko

Anne probably uses sub-machine guns or sniper rifles if I had to guess. That cat is adorable, but the designs overall are “over 9000” as vegeta from dbz says lol.

                • Mr.Sammich

Yeah, I’d guess SMG as well.
And I also gotta agree on your second point, this is Soejima-san it top form. Even speaking as someone who liked the MC’s design from the start, I gotta say it’s even better now that we know that under that nerdy loser-like exterior, lies a suave criminal mastermind. It’s the perfect cover.

                • Jason Robert McMahan

SMG’s, she’s wielding one in the picture up there.

Also, there’s a “party” option on the main menu, so we’ll see more then these four.

      • DrForbidden

I watched it a couple of times, and I’m afraid I saw no Tanuki suit…

        • Mr.Sammich
          • DrForbidden

Ah, I see. However, I’m pretty sure that character is dressed as a kitsune, not a tanuki.

            • Mr.Sammich

They’d need about eight more tails for that :)
Maybe they’re dressed as a ring-tailed lemur XD
Actually, thinking about it, it could be a plain old raccoon, that’d fit the thief theme.
Sly Cooper has invaded my Persona. Yes please.

              • DrForbidden

Well, that white mask is a common kitsune mask in Japan. Furthermore I refuse to accept any costume without a gigantic scrotum as a tanuki costume… XP

                http://www.mattclara.com/misc/movies/pompoko/images/vlcsnap-818889.jpg

                • Mr.Sammich

Let’s keep in mind here that pretty much all colors but red, grey, white, and the characters eye and hair colors have been whited out or replaced with one of those first three, for all we know that mask is purple ;P
And I can understand that last point. Maybe it’s a red panda suit :O That would be the best.

    • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

I think it will have more. The trailer might just be showing early parts of the game. Which I’m fine with might I add.

    • Raoni Marques

Definitely diggin’ that cat, but I hope there’s more. The rest of the party looks pretty good too.

  • chroma816

    I’m so goddamn excited

    • Mikail

Me either, i keep getting back to the article again and again to see other fans excitement, and to be honest i have watched the trailer more then 40 times. The hype it’s real and realistic unlike games like FFXV and Xenoblade, it’s simple and God i don’t know how to put in words.

      • chroma816

It literally blew away all of my expectations – I didn’t expect a thing i saw in the trailer, having tried to base my expectations on the few teaser trailers we had before this.

And then they hit us with this super stylish, crazy, phantom thief stuff, some insane designs, and enough to make us drool. The music, the designs, and, well, everything looks perfect.

I can hardly contain my excitement.

  • DrForbidden

Amiami has the special edition of P4D up for pre-order now, and it comes with a BD ‘special movie’ of P5.

    http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=GAME-0013649&page=top

    • Elle

      80 dollars without shipping…hm I’ll pass.

  • Kobracon

They already did it, so there would be no more impact…

    • MrFinalgamer

They did it even before that too…but no one knew/cared enough to make articles about how groundbreaking it was, or people analyzing the character. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    • アイシタ

It doesn’t have to be done for impact though, it’s more, that gay p[people exist just like any other person and want to have visibility/see themselves in media without discrimination, so it would be nice if there were gay or bi characters in p5, though i have no idea of knowing the chances of that

      • アイシタ

im stuck with an image i cant remove now whoops

  • tokyobassist

Exclusives don’t sell systems they said,

    • PuppetMaster

People who said that are clever /S

      • tokyobassist

That’s giving them too much credit for being so ignorant to think people aren’t going to gravitate towards a platform with games people want to play.

        – Sony has Bloodborne, P5 and Guilty Gear Xrd that got me.
        – Nintendo has a new Star Fox, Bayonetta 2 and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze that got me to purchase a Wii U.
        – Microsoft has nothing for me at the moment outside of Raiden V and I’m not even that big of a fan of that series. I just like shmups. I’m open to change. Hopefully Microsoft is.
        – I gravitated towards PC back in the day when PC actually had exclusives that were worth a shit not just a glut of hit-and-miss ports of console games, shovelware indie titles and early access alphas that make up Steam today. I got into PC gaming when Age of Empires 2, Max Payne, Deus Ex, Thief and Half Life were huge. Crysis was the last true relevant exclusive in my eyes but Star Citizen is starting to look like that next big thing though.

Point in case. Exclusives do push people to invest in something they don’t necessarily want in order to play something they are interested enough in.

    • Hachiman

      they are just greedy

      • tokyobassist

Sounds like they need to do more chores or put in more hours at work lol.

I haven’t been gaming as much lately so I can have money to game the fuck on in March. Working 6 days out of the week as a chef will break you in the later half of the week lol.

        • Zekethe1st

Holy shit, another gamer/chef who feels my pain

    • Kumomeme

      they just won’t admit

    • Jason Robert McMahan

Someone actually said that? That’s…basically Nintendo’s entire schtick. Also harken back to the days of Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, and Halo. All system movers. While I think we should probably be past the bulk of system exclusive games ((The big N not withstanding)) people will still buy systems based largely on what games go exclusively to that system. S’just common sense.

    • Protogamer

Bloodborne is the only reason I want a PS4 and Smash Bros, Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101 & Zelda are the only reason I forked out for a Wii U. What other reason would there be for buying a console, when many of the multiplatform games play best on a good PC anyway? People say some stupid things.

  • Bonn Bo

For a person who has yet to play a Persona RPG (I’ve own both fighting games), this seems like a good spot to start. That trailer looked fantastic and the game seems like it’s gonna be amazing. Throw more JRPGs at my PS4 plox.

    • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

Same here. I played p3 to its last battles but like the end of ff8 I never beat it. I want another shot here. The only Smt I finished was Devil Summoner 2.

      • Bonn Bo

looks like we’ll start the series with a good one man haha

    • Kumomeme

      never late than never
start according to series is the best…persona 3 fes first then try out persona 4 or persona 4 golden
persona 3 portable more like visual novel, some presentation being cut-off and the female mc storyline for veteran player who want new perspective

  • Fantasytales

This game is going to be amazing so excited!!!

  • cotton

they should just open the social link a little further and make some characters where it’s coincidentally possible. they already used homosexuality as an arc to make a splash, so it’s probably unlikely for them as a japanese company to attempt another arc centered around it.

my best hope is that it’ll be there but more coincidental or dependent on you.

  • Gavin John Campbell

Once more, P.studio hits the nail on the head and executes perfectly, what they say they will. How many more times are these guys gonna be allowed to blow everyone’s minds?
Like remember how that typhoon knocked out however many days of work on persona …i forget which one? Yeah, but they still kept plugging away. AND I don’t see any sonic the hedgehog references in the trailer, so…I’m okay with this. No. I’m pleased. Very much so.

  • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

There most certainly will be. If you look at the trailer you can see one listed for the weapon shop guy.

    • Mr.Sammich

      OOOH, that’s actually really interesting!
Maybe if you max out his link he’ll give you a 75% off discount, or a unique weapon or something :)

    • Shiroimi

If you talk about “JOKER – The Fool”, I rather think it’s referencing the protag. If I’m not mistaken…

      • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

It could be? I’m not sure. Either way, I think that proves S links are in.

        • Shiroimi

Yeah, my guess is as good as yours. I just hope they won’t remove them.

          • Meilany Elizabeth

well they say that might me the cooperation one … but with abit change

  • Kumomeme

    surely has

  • SoloKazama

I hope they wont forget japanese audtio this time :[ Even as DLC – I dont care, just bring it to us!

    • tokyobassist

I want both as well. Japanese voice overs always make me feel closer to home but if English VAs are as enjoyable as Cowboy Bebop for example, I’m all about it.

  • tokyobassist

Well, you just got a portion of my tax return that’s not going towards too many luxuries this year Atlus. Touche.

  • youngsexynerd

im sure the developer and the team must be surprised and thrilled by how good of a reception the trailer received!! Plus how many people actually took notice! hell, IGN alone, had over 2,000 comments on the trailer reveal and ALL of them were positive LOL That is incredible!

    • Meilany Elizabeth

offcourse !! the hype is so f reall……

  • Nanaya Shiki

Just make sure Japanese audio is available in international version and I’ll be more than happy.

    • Elle

      Persona 4 in english>>>>>>>>>

BUT it’s good to have options. Atlus plz.

    • WindsorJaysFan

At least Atlus’ English dubs are tolerable

  • Ace

When’s Persona 5 Dancing All Night gonna happen?

    • Mr.Sammich

If all the music as as groovy as that track from the trailer, hopefully soon.

    • Desmond Yoo

Persona 5 Jumping and Sliding all night.

  • XIII

    i can’t wait dammit!

  • Mr.Sammich

Maybe that’s eight besides the MC, with cavum referring to the MC and irritum referring to Yosuke.

  • Meilany Elizabeth

aw— i want it now!! Atlus please or whoever is that stop making me waitting *A* although i havent buy the ps4 LOL still i want to have it now….
