Development update on Devil’s Third

Scale of story mode greater than Ninja Gaiden, Itagaki says.

Devil's Third

Devil’s Third creator Tomonobu Itagaki took to Facebook to provide a development update on Devil’s Third, which has been silent since its E3 re-reveal.

An English version of Itagaki’s Japanese text was posted, however, we’ve modified it just a tad for better readability. Get the update below.

I recently received lots of questions about Devil’s Third from my fans.

I’d like to speak about development status of Devil’s Third in my own words, to the extent that I am allowed.

  1. Devil’s Third is a strong fusion between action games and shooters.
  2. Devil’s Third development is going smoothly. In other words, we finished editing the closing movie the other day.
  3. Devil’s Third will be released next year. Nintendo has already announced this in their press release.
  4. The scale of Devil’s Third‘s story mode is greater than that of Ninja Gaiden.
  5. Devil’s Third demolishes the standard of past console games in online multiplayer.
  6. Almost all specifications I wanted to do were implemented. I got an up-close look at the great forerunners Call of Duty, Battlefield, Gears of War, and my beloved Halo. On that basis, we added completely new level of playability that only we can create.
  7. Anyone can enjoy this game; from casual gamers to hard-core gamers. Let me put it this way. You guys can throw a fun party, or can kill each other in realistic war. You can play your heart out.
  8. This is all I can disclose to you today. I can’t tell you when the war will begin. It’s the way the world goes. I really want to tell you more, my fans waiting with crushing frustration.

It’s rough on a man!

Well, be patient just a little longer. Don’t miss it!

Devil’s Third will launch for Wii U in 2015.

As long as they keep the crazy, I’m on board

    • Skerj

Did you see it during E3? The crazy was gone.

      • Aiddon

I did. The crazy was in full form

  • Zackasaur

This game could not have looked less appealing…

I’m all for Nintendo diversifying and saving failing niche products, but this is one I won’t be supporting. There must be hundreds of better things they could have funded. Bayonetta 2 was a score, for example.

    • Eder García

so you want an established franchise instead of a new ip?

      • Solomon_Kano

How did you get that from that statement? New IP or not, the game doesn’t look good to him, so he’d have preferred they fund something else. That doesn’t in any way equate to wanting established franchises over new IP, unless you’re reading that mention of Bayonetta — as an example of a /good/ game that they funded — wrong.

      • Zackasaur

I’m happy with either, as long as it looks good.

        This couldn’t look more hopeless.

    • Budgiecat

I certainly would get a Wii U for Shenmue III

      or a Gamera game

  • Heisst

  • Bob Obb

Itagaki has never made a game that wasn’t fun. Just look at what NG and DOA devolved into without him. I have confidence in this game, even if it looked rough around the edges

    • d3v

DOA is arguably better now that Itagaki isn’t around. He absolutely ruined 4 which is why most competitive DOA players refuse to acknowledge it.

      • Anime10121

I wouldnt say he ruined 4…but 5 is the best game in the series since 2.

      • PrinceHeir

Not really. He wasn’t really suposed to made DOA4 since back then he felt he was able to make the best fighting game at that time(DOA3).

DOA4 was bad because the holds were crazy good and it’s more on spamming it till you get one, high freaking damage from environmental stages, movement feels different compared to DOA3.

I would say DOA3 and DOA5 are the best entries right now.
DOA2 is for the classic players.

        • Budgiecat

If you’re saying DOA5 is the best entry now, better then DOA4, then arguably you are agreeing that DOA is now better off without him…

          • PrinceHeir

Not really. Sure DOA5 is pretty good game due to feedback from a lot of players.

I still think Itagaki can outdo DOA5 if he does listen to feedback like they did with DOA5. That’s the only problem he has. I respect if he wants to do what he wants(like Kamiya), but for fighting games and you want to be competitive as possible.

Player feedback is always important for these kind of games.

And DOA5 system is based off of DOA4. They just reduced the hold times and made it more restrict. Even the environmental attacks came straight from DOA4.

            • Budgiecat

              Logic please

DOA5 is the current DOA game, and as you said, the best entry.

Itagaki is no longer working for Koei tecmo, therefore logic dictates he can not and will not be making a DOA game.

His last DOA game was DOA4, of which you already stated is inferior to DO5. therefore making Itagaki irrelevant to the current state of DOA.

therefore DOA5 as you have already agreed to, is the best and most current entry.

this court is now adjourned :p

              • PrinceHeir

                No just no.

You do know why DOA5 is better is because they only corrected the mistakes from DOA4.

So? Just because he can’t make the next DOA doesn’t mean he can’t make another fighting game. He can make another fighting game that’s not DOA in name, but it has all the elements of DOA and is better than DOA5 and beyond.

There’s no court here if there’s no audience in it.

  • Skerj

Man I had high hopes for this game but it looked completely horrible a few months ago, I hope that changes. Will not hold my breath though. ..

    • ConCity Soldier

Did you see the multiplayer? It looks amazingly fun!!

  • $129580909

For the love of all that is holy please, please be a good game.

    • 武神水樹

      Don’t buy day 1

  • Anime10121

It looked decent last time I saw it, hopefully it’ll look good the next time… though I still pray for a customizable lead :/

  • Budgiecat

Still going with that God awful main character design huh….okay…

    • -Misaki-

Has to make a bishounen… A badass bishoujo would be even greater.

      • Boldmonk

I can only see that work in Asian Markets.

        • Budgiecat

          Ryu Hayabusa
          Dynasty/Samurai Warriors
          Metal Gear Rising
          No More Heroes
          Devil May Cry
          Killer is Dead
          Final Fantasy

    • Boldmonk

At least it’s a design that appeals in the west right?

      • Budgiecat

        seems that was the intent…

    • ManagedCorn

Share with us what would be an appropriate protagonist for this game.

      • $129580909

        That turtle thing from Godzilla

        • ManagedCorn

          karas probably

        • Budgiecat

there is no turtle thing from Godzilla

      • Budgiecat

        What he originally had

        • ManagedCorn

          and that was

    • Aiddon

His character design is actually based off an old tale of a monk who covered his body in sanskrit to ward off spirits but forgot to put it on his ears and had them eaten off. Whoops.

Also, at the very least he fully committed to shaving his damned head instead of doing that halfassed crew cut style that can’t just commit to a head of hair or being bald.

      • Budgiecat

        look like skinhead

  • Bobby Jennings

the game looked great when i last saw it but that character is ugly

  • Ser2k2

Well have to wait until a nintendo direct show us the game play of the game to make a judgment if this this game is good or bad, and i hope this game fulfill whatever Itagaki said, because not everything that glitters is gold.

  • Dick Mountainjoy

    Looks like Shadow Warrior…

    Vomited on itself

  • BlueCereal

Still doesn’t sound good, I’ll wait until release to see how it turns out though.

  • ayanami-chan

    My God this looks terrible

    • OlimacFTW

      Everyone’s a critic now.

      • Budgiecat

yes people are allowed to have opinions, Kim Jong Un…

        • EX+

          That’s a bit far.

          • Budgiecat

Kim is a man of extremes

        • OlimacFTW

LOL! Comparing me with a dictator…. Butthurt, aren’t ya?

Edit: If you have nothing nice to say…

          • Budgiecat
            • OlimacFTW

Whatever You say… I’m a commie for arguing against a wannabe time traveler who already played the game…

Still, It’s surprinsing how someone as brainless as You know a little about communism.

And the irony about this is that maybe You don’t like the MC design in this game, but I can bet You like the MC in GoW.

              • Budgiecat

God of War or Gears of War?

no to both. You must be new here lol

                • OlimacFTW

It is not than I’m new, it is that, unlike You, I have a life.

      • desponent

Everyone’s not allowed to say anything bad about my favorite company.

  • PrinceHeir

    ありがとう ございます! Itagaki-san!

Already have a Wii U and definitely day 1 for me!!

I really hope the movement is just as fast as Gunz online!

Glad your back in the game! Hopefully you and your team can make more games after Devil’s Third :D

    Looking forward to this!

  • Solomon_Kano

I’m not even sure if I care anymore. The multiplayer looked crazy at E3, but the single-player looks SO BAD. Maybe it’ll have improved by the next time we see it, but I’m not counting on it.

    • Budgiecat

the only real good looking thing of this game is how concept wise its aimng to combine the strengths of both FPS (precise aiming) and TPS (proper character animation) into one.

I remember Batman Vengeance on GC/PS2 trying to do something like that back in 2001..

  • z_merquise

Sal knows what pic to use.

The overall look of the game doesn’t appeal to me but the gameplay itself doesn’t look that bad. It actually look fun.

    • Zackasaur

      I side-eyed that pic choice.

  • Syltique

I emailed them after E3 and told them to add some stuff, so it should be all good. I’m excited.

  • bloodiOS

This game, Bayonetta 2, and Xenoblade Chronicles X are the only reason why I’m eventually going to get a Wii U.

    • Budgiecat

I know historically Zelda has been a hit or miss for many people, and like Ghost dogie, even I have had trouble being motivated to continue playing, plus the majority of games I focused on playing on the Wii were 3rd party anyway, but that new Zelda is looking very promising what with its art style and huge open world..kinda hard to ignore.

Obviously need to see more of though…

      • desponent

        *use wiipad as shield

    • An Tran

      Not even Smash? :(

      • Budgiecat

Either you’re a long time Smash fan you you’re not.
Rarely are there new bandwagon jumpers

    • Alex B.

Those 3, and the eventual Metroid, StarFox and No More Heroes 3 for me.

  • NessWonderSprite

There are plenty of amazing Wii U exclusives. I am not sure if this will be one

  • Shogun

i bet you after a month or two a version of devils third will come to ps3 or ps4, it really needs it.

    • Budgiecat

  • EX+

Saying that the scale of the story will be larger than Ninja Gaiden isn’t saying anything amazing if memory serves correctly.

  • Ni ~Algidus~

    >The scale of Devil’s Third‘s story mode is greater than that of Ninja Gaiden.

pff. as if ninja gaiden story mode were big or something to be praised.
anyway for some unknown reason i’m not feeling this one beign a good game imo >:

    • ManagedCorn

      it was long.

      • Budgiecat

        and hard?

        • ManagedCorn

          and black

          • Budgiecat

            were there Asians and Blondes?

  • NPeart

Ditch the horrible autoaim of last gen controllers and replace it with gyro aiming.

Or, perhaps even use Wiimote to really go into town with the melee x shooting mechanics.

  • Hidayat246

don’t know if itagaki-sensei is HALO FANBOY O_o

    • Budgiecat

Well he put a Halo character in DoA4 remember..

  • praecipuum

    I loled so hard.

  • Limbless

Sure has taken a long time to make this.

    Or rather, is taking.

  • notcarolkaye

Boy, is that the protagonist? It’s like they think Duke Nukem wasn’t douche baggy enough.

    • MrFinalgamer

To be fair, Duke was always supposed to be a super douche like, alpha 90s action male. =P

      • notcarolkaye

Well yeah, that’s why he’s the perfect reference. :D

  • tokyobassist

For reason the game looks lame just by looking at it but I have this feeling it’s going to be surprisingly fun.

Not even trying to lighten up the mood around the comment section but I do feel like it has potential to be really fun but it does look deriative lol.

  • shogunknight

….I dont even know what to say about this in all honesty. Wait for more gameplay i guess

  • Harry Potter

    looks like RIDDICK

    • LunarHaven

Hey, that’s offensive to Riddick! Riddick looks like he’s got a solid personality, this guy looks extremely bland I think. If this main dude was one of two twin body guards you just fight to get into a building I wouldn’t be surprised.

  • Elle

I just can’t get excited about this :/

  • Chestnut Bowl

Sounds like Itagaki is still as humble as ever. If it’s anything like Ninja Gaiden [Black], then I have every reason to believe this game will rock. However, from what I’ve read, I’m worried that the game lacks focus.

  • Daniel Masterson

    definitely going to get this.

  • Guy Incognito

Itagaki tooting his own horn again. UGH
