How soon? "Very," teases Naughty Dog's Evan Wells.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

We haven’t seen Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End since its in-engine trailer debut at E3 in June. But that’ll change soon, according to Naughty Dog’s Evan Wells.

“It’s coming along nicely,” Wells told GameCrate at Naughty Dog’s 30th Anniversary art show. “We’ve been hard at work since E3 and all I can say is that we’ll be having some stuff to show you very soon.”

Pressed how soon, Wells teased, “Very.”

Uncharted 4 is in development for PlayStation 4.

Well I am ready for it then. I don’t even like most western action games but Uncharted just felt so… right

    • Budgiecat

      Not even Deadpool?
      yeeehaaaah!

      • PrinceHeir

Kinda ironic Drake and Deadpool has the same voice actor XD

        • Zuhri69

And Saint’s Row 4 boss. Seriously, Nolan North in SR 4 is a god.

  • vertical09

Uncharted 1 and 2 were great. Uncharted 3 made me a bit worried about the direction the series may be going…
Should be interesting to see if they can find a balance between gameplay and cinematic scenes in this one.

    • notcarolkaye

Yeah, I just replayed Uncharted 3 not too long ago and some parts of it really are crap. I’m not too worried about 4 though since the A team is back on it.

    • MrFinalgamer

I can never understand how someone can seriously say U3 was the worst….

      • Dick Mountainjoy

Because 2 was hyped to hell.

You think the reception on UC3 was bad? wait until TLoU2, there’s no way that can live up to the hype machine 1 made.

      • DrForbidden

Because 3 had a plot that turned into an illogical mess towards the end and shoehorned-in set pieces that serve nothing to advance said plot.

        • Dick Mountainjoy

          That’s Uncharted/Indiana Jones!

          • DrForbidden

Nope, that’s actually just Uncharted 3. Well, and maybe Indiana Jones 4…

The first game took place on a South American island, and the set-pieces reflect that. It also had a plot with logical plot progression. The second took place mostly in Tibet and Nepal, and again the set-pieces reflected that. The mountainside train shootout is absolutely fantastic. Again, the plot actually made sense, in the way that such mythological fantasy action adventures are wont to make sense.

3 had a set-piece set in the ocean, with containers and shit, despite being primarily set in the interior of the Rub al-Khali desert, which is really fucking far from any sea. Fun set-piece, but completely shoe-horned in and ultimately jars poorly with the rest of the settings.

As for the plot: it fell apart as soon as they reached the lost city or thereabout. So is it a genie or an undiscovered hallucinogen, ND? Make up your damn mind. If there is a magical sandstorm hiding the city, then that means magic (and genies) are probably involved, but everything we’ve seen in the previous games would argue that there is no magic in the Uncharted universe; they’re all undiscovered natural phenomena lost to modern science. If it’s magic, why bother with the hallucinations of flaming headed demons spread by the water? If it’s a powerful hallucinogen, then what’s up with the magical sandstorm? Just an excuse to set up a battle, with little thought going into the story and plot?

It’s not that I didn’t enjoy the gameplay in UC3, but as someone who cares very much about story and character development, the plotholes really grated on me.

            • Dick Mountainjoy

Such South American traditions as Nazi Zombies.

And such Tibetan traditions as giant blue exploding fruit monsters.

              • DrForbidden

                I’ll just quote myself here:

” Again, the plot actually made sense, in the way that such mythological fantasy action adventures are wont to make sense.”

Your comment is practically facepalm-worthy, dude. If you have a problem with the mythological/legendary curses and ‘hidden treasures of the lost worlds’ aspects of the franchise, perhaps you’re making a mistake by playing the games one after the other?

                • Dick Mountainjoy

Maybe you are the one delusional…

If you have no problem with Suddenly Nazi Zombies and Evil Avatar Monsters, why does 3 suddenly putting a bigger focus on random setpieces bother you? It’s the most bizarre nitpick to have. 3 was more about Drake’s backstory with Sully as apposed to a big random adventure for a random not really a treasure with some random bad guy who doesn’t matter at all.

It’s not like the pacing was super tight in any of them, it was all excuses to jump from set piece to set piece. And that’s not even getting into how lame the QTE boss of 1 was, or how annoying and repetitive the final boss of 2 was.

Then again, you’re the same person who says shitty gameplay in 1 doesn’t hurt the game for you, so have fun.

                  • DrForbidden

“If you have no problem with Suddenly Nazi Zombies and Evil Avatar
Monsters, why does 3 suddenly putting a bigger focus on random setpieces
                    bother you?”

Comparing apples and oranges there, bud. That’s like asking why someone who has no problem with jiggling breasts in DOA has a problem with the terrible story or the environmental hazards in the same game. It’s a non-sequitur so I’m not sure if you even have a point there.

“It’s the most bizarre nitpick to have.”

Because complaining about obvious plotholes in the plot and story is bizarre? Oookkkkaaaayyyy…

“3 was more about Drake’s backstory with Sully as apposed to a big random
adventure for a random not really a treasure with some random bad guy
                    who doesn’t matter at all.”

That’s fundamentally true, but the ‘big random adventure’ is the backdrop and narrative impetus for said exploration of their relationship. If it didn’t matter, they could just make a game where Drake and Sully sit around drinking beers and reminiscing instead. The journey matters as much as the destination.

“It’s not like the pacing was super tight in any of them, it was all
excuses to jump from set piece to set piece.”

Also largely true, but that doesn’t mean that connecting the set-pieces can be done willy-nilly, otherwise you’d end up with a series of random events at random locales, instead of a progressing narrative with adequate exposition and emotional cadences. 1 and 2 did much better in this department than 3.

                    “And that’s not even getting
into how lame the QTE boss of 1 was, or how annoying and repetitive the
                    final boss of 2 was.”

Agreed, but I’m not going to pretend 3 didn’t have an annoying final boss battle as well.

“Then again, you’re the same person who says shitty gameplay in 1 doesn’t hurt the game for you, so have fun.”

Yes, apparently the gameplay in Drake’s Fortune was so shitty that the game received universal acclaim, made Naughty Dog a household name, cemented Nolan North’s place in the hall of voice-acting greats, and launched a multi-million dollar franchise that continued selling well over a million copies of each main sequel. Sure.

You can call it ‘shitty’ if you want. Your prerogative. I’ll just call it ‘unpolished’ or ‘could be improved’. Compared to the sequels, the gameplay in Drake’s Fortune may be clunky and unpolished, but people playing the games in chronological order probably wouldn’t care. Even if they did, the instances where the game was broken by it were few.

It’s also your prerogative to value gameplay over story and plot, just as it’s mine to weigh these points more heavily. Let’s just agree to disagree, then. Have a nice weekend.

      • Anime10121

I didnt like the setting at all, and it’s lack of focus on characters besides Drake kinda killed it for me too…

The gameplay was the most polished by far, but thats not saying much when most of it’s still scripted imo…

      • Elvick

It was rushed, that’s the only issue I have with it. No extras, no Fat Drake to play with in the story, no cheats to unlock and make the story fun to play around in, nothing cool for post game. Other than MP. Which is lame, the MP isn’t lame, them not giving us what U1 and U2 had in SP extras was lame.

And the story itself felt like it suffered from the rush to get it out too. Given it’s all over the place and shoehorned in every possible character as if to say, “we didn’t forget your favorite!”

But it had some of the best setpieces IMO. And it had polished gameplay and is still a great game. The first is the worst ND developed one. Playing that sucker after 2 or 3 is like… “ehhhhhh”. Still good, but you know what you’re missing. :P

I’m glad ND isn’t afraid to delay games now.

    • Dick Mountainjoy

1 is the worst, by miles, it’s a mess.

      • DrForbidden

I have to disagree on that. I think that if any one of the 3 games deserves to be called a ‘mess’, it would be 3.

        • Dick Mountainjoy

Strictly speaking, 3 has the most polished gameplay, and functional shooting.

1 on the other hand is totally broken, you can even shoot right through walls…

A glitch that rebirthed in TLoU, but no one cares if the gameplay is broken because MUH FEELS.

          • DrForbidden

I was actually referring to the story/plot. I agree that shooting-wise, the latter two games are more polished. Still, I don’t recall 1 being broken and all that. I got a more of ‘ND still finding its legs’ feeling than ‘broken’, but then I’ve never shot through a wall in that game so I can’t comment.

            • Dick Mountainjoy

If you stand behind a wall in UC1/TLoU, and don’t cling to it, you can shoot through walls as long as your crosshairs aren’t touching the wall. But enemies can’t shoot you back.

          • Elvick

I don’t remember shooting through walls in either game.

Melee was god awful in U1. At the time, Uncharted was great, but after U2… going back to it, all you see are the glaring issues. It’s still a good game imo. Just doesn’t hold up.

I got the U2 platinum before the first game’s. Then went back to platinum the first… and lawd it was hard to do. It’s so much more clunky.

        • Elle

Have you played it fairly recently? The shooting, level design, that shooting while on a boat section with elena with you, waves of bullet sponge enemies worse than Uncharted 3 x100 , being shot literally 1/2 hits by a pistol 99% of the time is ABSOLUTELY AWFUL.

          • DrForbidden

I have not played it recently, but I never found the enemies in 1 to be more bullet sponges than the other 2 games. I don’t understand what you wrote about pistol 99% of the time, though.

    • McPoo

I thought 1 was mega boring. 2 and 3 were decent fun though. I’m not sure why, as when I look back they’re not really all that interesting as games. I think it’s the fun characters and sense of spectacle that make them so enjoyable.

      • Anime10121

Thats exactly my opinion on them. The game itself is nothing special (all those scripted jumps/climbs/everything), HOWEVER, the characters are all pretty great, and thats what keeps me coming back :P

    • Elle

Uncharted 1 is the worst naughty dog game ever made yeah I’m including jak 2.

      • Elvick

        Disagree, I think it’s Jak 2.

Granted, I’m talking Crash and on. I don’t know what they’ve done prior to that. They’ve been around 30 years… so they had to have done something before that. :P

      • Kamille

isn’t Jak 2 like the best in the series based on reviews, sales and just overall reception?

        • Anime10121

          HELL NO :/

Its pretty much unilaterally panned as the worst thing Naughty Dog’s ever created :/

  • Raiyu

    Probably at the VGAs

  • https://twitter.com/RyoonZ RyoonZ

Probably at the show Geoff Keighley host.

But I’m not sure ND would associate themself with VGX after last year.

  • TheRunning King

Cant wait for the Uncharted 4 gameplay trailer (get hype)

    • EX+

Why do they keep changing his face? Lol, he reminds me of Liam Neeson.

  • Zackasaur

    GIVE IT TO ME.

  • PrinceHeir

    HELL YES!!!!

  • Wolf Star

    That’s soon dough :3

    • nyobzoo

      Most likely vgx

      • Wolf Star

I hope they pick the right host for this years show.

  • Elle

I probably won’t watch whatever they show. Spoiled myself too much on uncharted 3.

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

Haha yes. Never watch trailers, dude. They really should be renamed spoiler-vids.

  • Guest

People are impressed only by the graphics this game, if a game does not offer realistic graphics, it’s called crap, low budget game, which should close the doors, these people not consider a gamer.

    • Bobby Jennings

I disagree. I’m all about the gameplay but Uncharted delivers on both.

    • Anime10121

I think Uncharted is a pretty fun adventure game actually, and thats more for the characters than the graphics :/

    • Elvick

I think you’re barking up the wrong tree here… lol.

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

Kinda pointless to say that here. Also Uncharted delivers on both gameplay and graphics.

    • Counterproductive

People who think that they have to choose between graphics quality and gameplay shouldn’t consider themselves gamers. Uncharted delivers both in spades, and with an excellent story too.

Don’t let a misguided agenda prevent you from experiencing a fantastic series like Uncharted.

  • saveerror

    Stoked

  • Elvick

    I’m so ready. :’3

  • Kamille

I cannot wait. Uncharted was/is one of my fravorite franchises of the last generation.

  • PhoenixAutomatic~♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪~

I don’t really know what to expect after the leave of Amy Hennig.

  • CeroSuerte

Quite a list of contenders for best game 2015..
I wonder if this is really the end?? We just started the new gen, I had so much fun in the sinking ship in 3… I wouldn’t mind a prequel in the future

  • Mikail

It will have some news when MCC is coming on Xbox one with Halo 5 demo, mark my words, when Xbox one announced last year SONY teased us with a blur Playstation on the trailer. When the biggest games on their rival is coming with trailer and demo, SCEI will counter with another hype from their biggest games as well.

  • datdude

My list of day one buys for 2015 is preposterously long at the moment, and Uncharted is right at the top of that list. I’m worried that the first gameplay video may elicit tears of blood from my poor eyeballs.

  • Heavenly_King

VGAs hopefully (and not VGX because that was FUGLY!)

  • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

I’m excited. I’ve personally been a big fan of the series since the first game released and was not very well known. I remember loving the demo and going out to buy it with a friend. We played it at his house that weekend together and had lots of fun. I didn’t have an HDTV at the time but he did.

I think I love all 3 games for different reasons. Each one has things I like about it. Sure, I wouldn’t say any of them are ‘perfect’ in my eyes, but I enjoyed playing all of them quite a bit.

  • DuskTaker7

Excited about this, Uncharted 2 and 3 are really fun games and I enjoyed them.

  • Dick Mountainjoy

Between the shitty circumstances of the Drukkman power play a few months back and how Pretentious and Repetitive TLoU was I don’t have much faith in UC4, and how much darker and grittier the teaser was drives that faith down to pretty much nothing.

    • tokyobassist

I wouldn’t go as far as you did but yeah I didn’t like The Last of Us as a game overall.

  • Marco Tinè

This is my personal angle on the situation: I can’t see myself nitpicking about the flaws of a game – especially an old one – when its positive aspects are what stays with me in the end. I think this is one of the reasons why Naughty Dog’s games are so highly regarded.

There are many opinions in the comments I don’t agree with, but I won’t put up any “fights” because most of them are about details that once framed in the whole picture of the games, don’t bring the experiences down to cases of overevaluation.

That’s why I’m pretty sure Uncharted 4 will have its share of flaws, but I look forward to the memories it will leave me with. Should it disappoint me, I’ll be happy to point out where and why, but the series’ track record (and yes, Druckmann’s direction too) drives me towards optimism.

  • tokyobassist

I’ll keep an eye on it. Uncharted 2 was the one I really enjoyed out of all of them.
