Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata addressed a number of fan concerns during its Final Fantasy Type-0 HD Extended Talk Show this morning.

Find the full Q&A below.

Q: So after all, the E3 2013 trailer was a lie? You can’t actually play like that?

A:You can fight like that. I think in the recent play demonstration we showed several techniques and functions, but at E3 last year the game was running on a prototype environment (Ebony). At TGS 2014 we showed the game running in the actual environment (Luminous). Right now we are in the process of migrating functions from the prototype into it. It will take time to migrate it all. I wanted to show footage in the actual environment as soon as possible, so I ended up showing something that is in the midst of migrating. The video shows actual footage, not an idealized version. It will become more and more advanced from here on out.

Q: Can you go into detail about the “holding down the button” issue? Is it really okay to just hold the button down?

A:It’s not that simple! (Laughs.) Yes, when you continue to hold down the guard button, you can basically auto-guard and evade, but it consumes MP. You can’t infinitely evade. You have to think about timing, when it’s a good idea to attack or evade. Also, you aren’t invincible. There are attacks you can’t avoid. In those cases, there are also essential technical evasion methods.

Q: What about attacks?

A:When you push the attack button, you invoke the standard combo. You can change the actions by using it in coordination with the directional buttons. The actions change depending on your circumstances—things like whether you’re guarding and whether the timing is right, (imagine in this circumstance: when you’re guarding, you might get a chance to counterattack or something), or if your companions are nearby.

Q: Can you change the operational character?

A:Not in its current specifications. Everyone on the development team thoroughly looked into an Active Cross Battle system that made free use of attack, guard, and co-op functions, but as a result they arrived at the conclusion that changing characters would be too difficult. In order to create a new and interesting battle system, we ended up not being able to put in the character switching.

Q: Is jumping in?

A: It is. Considering PlayStation 4 has plenty of buttons, there is an independent jump button.

Q: What about free running?

A: It’s there. Except for the character switching, everything that was in the E3 2013 trailer is still there. All the cool actions like the weapons barrier that surrounds Noctis called “Phantom Sword,” and the short warps and jumping from the Behemoth battle are in the actual game. We’ll release more information later on, so please look forward to it.

Q: What about weapon selection?

A: You set them yourself before battle. You set each weapon considering what actions you can use with which weapons. You can only determine one weapon from the ones equipped to be your main one, but that weapon will come with techniques which can be invoked at your discretion in battle. Besides the basic assault button (attack), you can invoke techniques with the technique button.

Q: I can’t tell if it’s more like Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy Type-0. Which is it?

A: We explained that when you push the attack button, you invoke the standard combo, which is similar to Type-0. Considering the battle system as a whole, however, it is different from both Type-0 and Kingdom Hearts.

Q: Is it being simplified for casual users? Is is still an action RPG?

A: In order to widen its appeal, we’re developing the game aware that anyone can immediately be able to play it, however the game as a whole is not casual. Because it’s a core game, we have casual controls. If you obtain good weapons and level up, you won’t have to worry about clearing the main scenarios.

Q: Will you listen to feedback from the demo version?

A: We want to reference your feedback during development, but how we’re going to do that is still under review.

Q: Haven’t you been poor at putting out information?

A: If our fans are uneasy about the information we have released, then our ways of issuing information may in fact be poor. Even though we didn’t have a lot of time, I wanted to make clear the current situation. In the future, our information releases might be poor, but I think we can receive your approval.

Additional details were shared on cooperative chains, parrying, and other general information.

“There are systems we want to tell you more about.”

Final Fantasy XV’s Cooperative Chains & Growth

  • “The co-op moves aren’t one-offs, you can do them continuously.”
  • “Invoking co-op moves is automatic, but it’s necessary for the player to aim their mark.”

Turning to the Side = The Concept of Parrying

  • “To connect a co-op move while avoiding an enemy attack, you have to keep an eye out for an indication when to invoke it.”
  • “You can’t auto-parry.”
  • “It feels accomplishing to pull of a co-op attack from a parry.”

More details to come later.

General

  • “Even though there are parts from Versus that we have ended up changing, we’ve developed them in more interesting ways, I want you to look forward to it.”
  • “I get reports everyday from development staff about what was said on the internet. If we have material, I’d like to release development information again in a live broadcast like this on November 1.”
  • “Next month they’ll release information from other development members.”
  • “Development progress is at 55%. Final Fantasy XV has entered the phase where they are mass producing resource material. After that, it’s a fight against the amount of resource material and time. We are also hiring people to help make Final Fantasy XV, so interested applicants should check out the homepage.”

Tabata also shared new footage of Final Fantasy XV during the stream, showcasing short warps and the Phantom Sword barrier shown at E3 2013.

Finally, Tabata revealed he has taken a liking to the “Car Driving” meme surrounding Final Fantasy XV. He finds it hilarious, actually. So much so that he released official assets for meme makers.

Gonna wait for the demo and judge it, if we aren’t satisfied then we should proceed to send messages to them via facebook or twitter, after all they are listening to feedback.

    • Budgiecat

I doubt they’ll make any significant changes this late in developmental stage based on random fan requests; just wishful thinking…

      • ZenTzen

the game is supposed to have a fully feture for the party and their AI, obviously they’ll have their own abilities and features, asking them to be able to implement a character switch shouldnt be too dificult, this just screams of laziness, or axing essential features to reach a stupid deadline

        • Budgiecat

The thing is, had FF XV been originally announced for PS4/XB1 like…..in 2012 or 2013, it would actually serve S-E better to revert to their usual ‘stall tactics’ to wait for PS4/XB1 install base to grow for potential maximized sales results.

But now, +8 years in development, and some shaky past FF games not putting them in a good light as well as near BK’ing them, along with God knows how much money spent into practically remaking the entire game from 2012 on, and we can see S-E is running out of time and money and will just have to release as is on a new and smaller install base and hope for the best…

          • ZenTzen

actually the game wasnt in development hell as people seem to think, XIII had problems forcing the XV team to go and help them, then there was XIII-2 and LR, the flop that was FFXIV vanilla forced a company wide pool of developers to remake it into FFXIV ARR, which only impacted the development of XV, after that XV could start development, but come e3 2013, according to nomura, SE announced KH3 too early, then SE wanting to reach a certain deadline with XV and wanting to start KH3 development as fast as possible, forecebly removed nomura from XVs directorial chair.

Also, SE isnt in the red, they’e had pretty successfull handheld games during these years, and regardless of XIII quality as an FF or RPG, it sold buttloads, and its sequels sold enough to at least break even, FFXIV ARR has also been hugely successfull for them, if anything they have an image problem, which i think definetly improved after the XIII saga was finished

            • Budgiecat

No one said it was in development hell.
Versus XIII beta was complete in 2012.
It was Wada who wanted it ported over to PS4, which initially Nomura was against.

And yes S-E acknowledged that FF XIV 1.0’s failure could of nearly bankrupted them.
S-E has shown major financial sales losses before publically, so where have you been.
And handheld game sales arent enough to keep them afloat which is why they were crying so hard when tomb Raider, Hitman and Sleeping Dogs didnt sell to their expectations despite each selling well over a million each

  • MyBodyIsReady

Looks incredibly pretty but gameplay looks kinda boring. I’m approaching FFXV with caution

    • Anarcki

when has gameplay looked incredible in a final fantasy?

      • Budgiecat

        Versus XIII trailer :P

        • Anarcki

          i disagree

          • Budgiecat

WELL THAT SETTLES EVERYTHING YOU WON SIR

            • Anarcki

This isn’t a battle, we have to differing opinions, I’m not trying to convince him of anything, hence me only stating that I disagree with him.

  • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

In order to create a new and interesting battle system, we ended up not being able to put in the character switching.

Right, because being unable to change party members during battle is totally new and interesting, lol. Come on, S-E. You could have done it, you just chose not to for whatever reason.

    • MrFinalgamer

More like, Noctis can already do what everyone else does (Prompto’s shooting aside). Having other characters playable would just be a pointless feature.

      • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Pointless? Hardly. That’s like saying for a MMO, “Why would you want that appearance? Their character can do everything yours can, so just play with theirs.”

There are different reasons as to why someone would want to play as another character and the fact that they aren’t implementing a switch feature in a game like this just screams lazy to me, honestly. I mean, look at it… It has all of these features, the graphics are insane, but you can’t even switch party members (a feature that has been around for over two decades).

        Come on, lol.

        • Yuntu

I don’t wanna be rude: But do you develop games? I don’t and I just can’t just if not beeing able to switch is lazy or if that kinda stuff is hard to do with the luminous-engine, after all isn’t this the first game SE does with this one?

          • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Trust me, there has got to be a more difficult feature they have implemented in this game than a party member switch function. It’s no different than them going “herp derp” over their reasoning behind why you automatically get a game over if Lightning dies in XIII, despite having other party members still alive to revive her (and the godforsaken Doom feature as well to prevent you from dragging out battles, lol).

I can probably have FFXV fix me breakfast, but I can’t even switch party members. Ridiculous.

          • Budgiecat

A new Engine should make things easier to do not harder lol

            • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

We switched engines to make things more difficult for us!

This is going according to plan.

              • Budgiecat

                “but….this is a Yugo engine….you put a Yugo engine in a Ferrari….I don’t even…”

                • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

                  I put a V8 in my Prius. Why can’t I go?

        • MrFinalgamer

An MMO is different from a single player ARPG, though. An MMO is geared towards helping each other, and customization in a virtual world. In this case, this is a single player game. You get help from an AI, but it’s most your experience alone. Having other characters playable, when the guy you’re controlling can already do everything they do, is just pointless IMO.

          • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Again, wrong. Everyone has different aesthetic tastes. I may like someone else in the party more than the protagonist, so I should be able to play as him, regardless of what they can do. We’ve had plenty of mimics in the past before in FF and they didn’t stop them from being playable then, so why now?

“Oh. This character can use everything, so the others are useless to play with. You don’t have to control them.”

            Gee… Thanks, game :|

          • Budgiecat

Why does the main character have to do everything?

His name is Noctis , not Ramirez, and this is Final Fantasy, not Call of Duty :P

      • BlueCereal

It actually would have been cool if each character hard their own strengths, Noctis could would be good with fast melee attacks, Ignis with magic, Cor with slow but strong heavy attacks and Prompto with long range attacks or using the environment to cause damage.

        • Budgiecat

          Ignis: “sigh….there’s no “I” in ‘team’, Noctis…”

Noctis: “that’s PRINCE Noctis to YOU homegurl! *snaps finger in a wide circle and walks away*

    • triggerx

they did when the game was called versus xiii

      http://youtu.be/uQ7MwTXYLpg?t=2m16s

      • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Then that makes it even more sad if they removed it.

    • Tarkovsky

I don’t think you are interpreting his comment right. You can’t just switch sentences around and make them mean the same thing.

      • Budgiecat

So why dont you elaborate for Mr. Hikari..

    • Crystal Power

I’m just assuming, but something tells me it was laziness. Character switching was included since it’s Versus XIII days but now it’s removed. This is very disappointing…

  • TheExile285
  • MrFinalgamer

It’s funny how in just 2 months with Tabata being in charge, we know more about the game, than in 8 years with Nomura being in the helm. Also, it’s very pleasant to see FFXV go the same route XIV took, as in, a heck of a lot more transparency than ever.

Also, nice to see him adress the casual comments. Now all the people panicking for no reason can finally calm down.

    • desponent

      Uh huh.

    • DarthBrian

He’s more than likely been in charge since E3 2013.

    • Calbury

People aren’t panicking for no reason, and can’t calm down because the battle system still sounds like garbage.

  • Tarkovsky

It’s good that they’re listening to fan feedback but I just hope it ultimately doesn’t cloud their vision like what feedback did to Dark Souls II. I’m sure many will disagree with me but that’s just my personal opinion. I want to play something the creators want to create, whether or not it be good or bad, instead of something that’s constantly tweaked to appease fan expectations and demands and ends up being a product that’s a mishmash of ideas.

  • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

      LMAO

  • NessWonderSprite

    sounds really bad

    • Budgiecat

“Unless it was on 3DS or Wii U” we know we know stealth :P

      • NessWonderSprite

You can put it on the 3DS and Wii U and I still would think the gameplay is shallow.

Stop acting like a fanboy, not everything is about what console or system a game is on.

        • Budgiecat

If I was a gambling cat, knowing your ways I wouldnt bet on it…. :3

        • osa

          >Stop acting like a fanboy,
          LOL
It’s hilarious to see YOU say that.

          • NessWonderSprite

Way to jump in and bring nothing to the table. Good job.

            • osa

And saying “sounds bad” like you did is bringing something to the table?

If you expect a sensible response make a sensible original post.

              • NessWonderSprite

Sounds bad is my opinion of what he said. If you are so insecure, that you need to jump on people you disagree with, well, you have issues.

                • osa

Opinion you didn’t explain and yet, apparently, you expect to be taken seriously.

  • Nhatalya

lmao, 8 freakin’ years, and the game is shit, really.
No wonder why Nomura has left.

I resume FFXV > Pretty graphics, linear, one button. That’s it. Characters looks super dull. Gameplay looks boring, nothing new on it.
This game is so gonna fail, I swear.

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

      >Nomura left

You mean kicked off the team, right? “Left” would imply he removed himself willingly and we know that isn’t true, lol. He just wasn’t getting anything done, so he was replaced.

    • Yuntu

You clearly didn’t read the whole thing – guessing on the “one button”-saying.

    • Seifer90

So, can we expect another Final Fantasy XIII?

    • Elvick

Cool, please send me your copy of the game so I can play it ahead of it’s release date too. :D

      • Calbury

        What release date?

        • Elvick

The release date it will eventually get. Unless you are implying it will never release. Thus never have a release date.

But You’d be wrong. Just as Blati. But you clearly can’t grasp a simple point.

          • Calbury

I was making a joke about the game still not having a release date.

    • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Agreed. Game is dead on arrival.

    • Kenny ケニー

Nomura was getting kicked off by Square-Enix most likely, if keeping him as Director the game will wait until 2020 or maybe won’t see the lights of the days, Nomura is a great character designer and creator of KH series but it doesn’t mean he will be good on develop FF title too, it way too different from his KH titles.

      • Budgiecat

        Scapegoated

  • cheese puffs

All i wanted was a manual option for executing combos. no character switching is bad, but it’s not a game breaker for me…..

    • Budgiecat

Its a deal with it issue

But feels painfully similar to the news of only controlling one character in FF XIII and if main character dies, game over etc…..

      • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

        Persona 3 all over again ;w;

      • cheese puffs

there’s a patent that said the game would have a manual option “in which various attacks can be cast by the player pressing a plurality of buttons.” all i wanted was for the guy to confirm that…

        Edit:http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=131465840&postcount=156

      • DarthBrian

But you don’t only control one character in FFXIII. o_O

        • Budgiecat

Yeah and I was brimming with joy and excitement when I first found out that news as well :P

“Oh we give orders! Greaaat” :P

          • DarthBrian

It’s only like that for the first 9(?) chapters. After that you can choose who is the party leader. But then, yeah, you can only give orders to the other people in your party. But you are allowed to choose who you control at least.

            • Budgiecat

yeah not the same thing lol

  • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

Tabata has world walk and car footage on his iPad that he held back. ='(

    • Seifer90

Probably he is gonna show those in November..

  • Pyrofrost

    Thank you Olivia and Sal!

  • BlueCereal

sigh.. looks like auto-attack is here to stay.

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

      EASY MODO

    • Hikari Langley

It’s not exactly auto attack, as it’s just the attack button that many other action games have. Press Attack and enter a string of equipped combo’s.

I’m too impressed with this game, to even be a slight bit disappointed.

      • -Misaki-

Yea, a bit similar to rush in turn based battles except this is more like preset combos.

        • cheese puffs

“preset combos” i hate those words…..

          • -Misaki-

To be honest, yea, I prefer to show off skills, but who knows, it gonna depend on the game, maybe enemies types gonna be too many to rely on those preset combos. I guess the Demo might be good to determine.

            • cheese puffs

hope i feel different once i try out the demo.

              • -Misaki-

Yea, as much as I feel sad to see the game can be casual friendly, but I also don’t wanna jump and attack the devs early and make them doubt what they make cause simply changing few things might break the whole game, who knows.

I was thinking maybe you can even build combos BASED on preset combos, that also requires skills and doing all combos at once including different ones can be tiring and boring.

Lol I don’t wanna have high expectations, but can’t help it.

          • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Can’t combo? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Just push this button right here and we’ll give you a combo so you can win the game!

            • cheese puffs

Loll. whole thing sounds so depressing…

      • BlueCereal

It’s a lot different from other games, this is holding a button to create a combo, with other action games you have to press a button or several buttons many times to do a combo..

    • vertical09

It’s starting to feel less like auto attack, and more like replacing button mashing with button holding…

Though I do prefer my buttons mashed.

  • rickscythe

I see… So it’s pretty much like the battle system of Tales series… has an attack button and technique button and directional buttons change the way of attacks…
    Not so bad anymore. :P

    • desponent

Guarding and Art use different button in Tales, you can also use different character which have different artes. Try again.

      • rickscythe

I said it’s “like” the battle system, not the same.
Also is the question “What about weapon selection” he implicitly states that the technique button is different from the attack button.

        • desponent

Well uh, you can pretty much say that it’s like x game then. But okay.

          x=some random action rpg

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

      >So it’s pretty much like the battle system of Tales series

Yeah, pretty much. You know, except for the fact that you can’t change characters :p

      • MrFinalgamer

Except, you know, there’s no god character that can do what the others can (as far as I’m aware of).

        • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

But there are god characters which make others obsolete because they have everything you’d ever need, sooooooo… There’s that.

      • rickscythe

Yeah… not being able to change characters is a little bad. I wonder what happens if Noctis dies…
        I haven’t read the full article yet…

        • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Game over, I’m assuming. I doubt they’d just let your A.I. duke it out and finish the fight.

          • MrFinalgamer

From the TGS trailer, it seems that they’ll become meat shields, until you heal. Probably part of the whole gambit system.

            • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Oh, you mean how the E3 trailer showed us one thing of how the game works, but they did a 180 and showed us something different at TGS? Yeah, if TGS is any indication, you’re probably right then.

Better wait until it’s out (at least the demo anyway) before counting our chickens.

            • rickscythe

Well if it’ll be like that then the monster should be really powerfull to be able to kill the party fast when they are protecting Noctis while he recovers otherwise the game will be too easy…

  • vertical09

That looks like some very nice and solid gameplay!

Also I love how he just created his own meme.

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Well, he didn’t create the meme. Fans created it, but he’s just endorsing it by passing around templates to use to make it easier to create them.

      • vertical09

Yeah worded that wrong. He’s supporting the existing meme.

Which is still pretty hilarious to see. For better or worse, he’s definitely keeping up with the fanbase :3

  • desponent

    lol looking at those gameplay.

SE should sell and market turbo stick along this game.

“Become GODLIKE on Painaru Pantasi Ekusu Paip with this, hold X for awesome”

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Hell, why not? Fighting games already have combo buttons, lol.

    • cheese puffs

      dat engrish! lol

  • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

This guy sounds better than Nomura

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

      Did Nomura ever sound good?

      • Budgiecat

        well:

        semi open world
        World map
        switch characters in battle
        ability to control airships
        commandeering enemy aircraft and mecha
        real time weapon switching
possible female characters to control later
real time weather and day to night
Less emphasis on drawn out CGI cutscenes
        seamless encounters no battle transitions

certainly sounded good and better than Hallway Fantasy :P

    • Kenny ケニー

Hmm… not really… can’t say who is better, Nomura is not good in develop FF titles but he is pretty bad-ass in character designs and the KH series he created is amazing.

  • NessWonderSprite

It sounds like KH reskinned with less control over other characters. I never thought I would see the day I missed FF 13 gameplay

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

      Ouch.

    • thetrooper1989

      …..just stop.

      • NessWonderSprite

        Truth getting you upset?

  • Seifer90

lol, a lot of mad people here, like i said, just wait for the demo and judge it for yourself.

    • desponent

lol mad? more like amused, I have no semblance of attachment with this franchise anymore so if it turn out bad I’ll laugh and if it turn out good I’ll buy it and laugh. Win-win.

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Yeah, this will probably be locked within 48 hours (that’s being generous though).

      • Dasher1572

Don’t you have anything better to do? I mean damn, I think you missed a comment.

  • abcmocca .

please don’t add fucking QTE & make it like FFversus gameplay trailer dammit.

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery

    you play as Noctis alone…
    alone….

    • Christopher

You still have to control them through gambit system

      • Budgiecat

        Where was Gambit mentioned….

        • Yuntu

Didn’t he mention that in an interview? That you could control them similiar to the gambit system in XII. Though he didn’t deliver any more information on that.

          • Budgiecat

He says a lot of things…

    • desponent
  • Christopher

Honestly, it sounds like you can evade whenever you want by just pressing the button rather than holding it. I wonder why he said you push the button to attack as opposed to holding the button down… hm. Anyways, this doesn’t sound too bad at all. I do have to say, please give us the option to mash the attack button? It gives a feeling that you’re more in control. Thank you.

    • desponent

Looking at the trailer since you automatically jump from foe to foe you probably still have to mash the button too look awesome.

      • Christopher

Yeah that’s true, you know those little warps that they did to transport from enemy to enemy? You think we’ll have to press the warp button then attack? I hope so.

  • Yuntu

I just love how he answers every question many fans had ( with a positive answer in most cases, except the Noctis-only ) – and then the “fans” still bash the game.
But for me this Q&A means that the game will be worth the wait, I just wanted a main title in the FF franchise with action-combat and it seems like I will get just that.

    • desponent

What you think as positive may not necessarily be so for other. Life.

      • Anarcki

That’s not really the case, people are skimming over the interview w/o using their reading comprehension and reacting to anything they don’t like w/o reading what is said next.

        • desponent

Ah yes, insulting “them” is one way to make yourself feel superior to those plebs who have different opinion than you.

          • Anarcki

To bad i didn’t insult anyone, stating people aren’t using their reading comprehension and just reacting is a fact and is extremely common on the internet. So stop trying to act all high and mighty.

            • desponent

              If you say so.

        • cheese puffs

I read it. I understood it. Holding down the attack button for preset combos doesn’t sound appealing to me in anyway…

          • Anarcki

did you also forget that he points out you can do your own combos, had you read it you would have seen that

            • cheese puffs

You CAN’T perform your own combos manually. still need to set them so they activate depending on the situation(via the gambit system), then there’s the whole “hold down attack button for standard combos” thing. maybe you’re the one with the lack of reading comprehension skills….

              • Anarcki

Read again bro, in the interview its only stated that you can auto guard by holding down the button. When it comes to attacking he says push. Pushing a button and holding a button are two completely different things. They also point out that the directional pad changes attacks, which wouldn’t make sense if you just held a button down.

                • cheese puffs

I read that part, even had a discussion about it with some dude on novacrystallis. Push is still kinda vague, it could either mean hold or tap. And i don’t see how moving the directional pad would make a difference if you were holding the button down or tapping, but whatever….

Anywho, i know there should be a manual option in the game. There’s a patent for FFXV someone posted on neogaf that shows it. Only thing i wanted from the SE live stream was for tabata to confirm it and he didn’t really do that. So now, i’ll just wait until i get my hands on the demo…

                  • Anarcki

Yeah I can agree with you on that saying push is extremely vague, I just don’t understand people freaking out right now, they’ve said they haven’t fully explained the battle system and we’ll get a demo, so all of our questions will be answered then

      • Yuntu

What didn’t he answer positive besides the Noctis-only? The combat isn’t just holding down one button, you can’t dodge endlessly, you can jump, game isn’t casual, they listen to feedback and it seems like they give us steady information just as awesome as with XIV and he says when we will get the next news.
There is nothing really wrong with anything he said.

        • desponent

          – Combat isn’t just holding down one button, but holding down one button is the primary mean of attack
          – You can dodge with the same button as attack
          – He said that the game is casual enough, not that it’s not casual (look closely to his answer)

Some people don’t find those as positive like you, is it that hard to understand?

          • cheese puffs

dodging and attacking are 2 different buttons.

            • desponent

My bad then, didn’t complain about it nor I see anyone complaining on that point here though.

          • Yuntu

No it isn’t hard to understand, but some people just bash every little thing they read on news to FF15 ( though I completly agree on the Noctis-only ) without even thing about it, that’s why that one news got the comments closed.

            • desponent

Or they have different expectation than you, this is not free product, SE job is to appeal to them and with their past resume it’s understandable that many people are wary. But sure, keep on calling them clueless.

        • vertical09

          People have different opinions.

    • FlareKnight

Well this is his game so of course he’s going to spin anything in a positive way. Would he really want to throw anything out there that sounds inherently bad?

Some of the answers felt pretty empty. Pretty well said they aren’t going to care that much about the demo responses, but not really surprising. I don’t think that many games would change things depending on demo feedback.

The answer on the casual controls was honestly pretty blank. It’s not casual….but no answer as to how in order to back it up. I think someone just told him that casual was a bad buzzword and to use it sparingly.

    • Budgiecat

      Fan =/= fanboy

Wish some people would realize this…

      • Elvick

        Whenever I see someone say, “I’m a fanboy, but I can respect other people’s opinion~” Um, then you’re not a fanboy. I see it a lot. :|

    • Gustavo Rosario

I will have my character switching Tabata or I will look for you, I will find you, and I will force you to put it in the game.

  • FlareKnight

If there was one question on the ball for this it was about them doing a terrible job getting information out. A lot of things to this point just sounded terrible when he tried to explain them. I’m not sure if it’s just poor communication or a lack of understanding of what people are hoping for.

Either way let’s hope the demo turns out great and can show the positives of this system better than they can be explained.

    • British_Otaku

This! I think all of the questions were pretty solid, but this one… Calling them out on how poorly they are sharing information and leading to people whether they are Japanese speakers or foreigners assembling in petitions to repair the game.

  • Six
    • Budgiecat

      I dun get it

      • Six

        It just felt appropriate.

        • Budgiecat

Can you elaborate though cause I’m missing it

          • Elvick

SE is dragging us a along and we don’t want to be? idk

  • Seifer90

I am actually more interested in Xenoblade Chronicles X than XV:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APWTJMyM4qg

    • osa

      great trailer.

  • SuperLuigi

Looks like the gameplay is KH with just Final Form Sora playable. I hope there is more to it than this. I have been looking forward to this game since 2008 and even bought a PS3 way back when for the JRPG hype that was happening that year.

    • Budgiecat

yep same here. I really was not interested in FF XIII or XIV from the start; now even XIV was more enjoyable than entire XIII series and I’m not an MMO player.

I guess I’ll focus my attention to type Zero HD….

      • SuperLuigi

I saw the upcoming ps3 rpg games trailer that year. Saw FF XIII, Versus, Tales of Vesperia where you can play as Flynn Y.Y, resonance of fate, and more but I forgot now. I thought XIII was alright, no versus, no tales of ves english, and I din’t like resonance. I still enjoyed my ps3 though xD

        • Budgiecat

Also you left out White Knight Chronicles 2006 tGS gameplay trailer that looked awesome action RPG with controllable switchable playable characters and true sword n shield gameplay, and wasn’t a dull pseudo faux MMO style

          • SuperLuigi

That’s what I forgot! Me and my buddies all had 360s and we saw that trailer and agreed to get ps3s and play all these RPGs and play White Knight together. Let’s just say it didn’t work out…at all haha

            • Budgiecat

              yep

  • Seifer90

You are still gonna buy this game anyway xD

  • Noctis Caelum

great can´t watch it, cause I´m in germany and it´s not allowed to watch livestreams. -_-

  • Pekola

Remember when XIII was hated and everyone clamored for XV?

The cycle of FF has begun anew.

    • Elvick

I hate XIII, but I”m still looking forward to playing XV.

So… delusional people that want to hate will claim there’s a cycle no matter what. Just like the Sonic Cycle morons did. Ignore that everyone loved Colors, everyone loved Generations… just so they can keep acting like they’re smart. All that did was prove their idiocy.

      • Pekola

        What might you be saying…?

      • Gustavo Rosario

Just give me another Sonic Adventure! Please, I just want my Chaos back! T_T

      • Budgiecat

When XIII, Versus XIII and Agito were all initially announced, my interest was always Versus XIII more. Especially considering who were directing each game.
When XIV 1.0 was introduced, I was like ‘okay’ cool CGI’, but since I dont play MMO’s, I really wasnt swayed.
When XIII was confirmed to be a streamlined game, my interest waned from it even further and when Agito was confirmed to NOT be a mobile phone game and be a PSP game and they showed gameplay footage, my interest in it exceeded FF XIII.

And when I finally played FF XIII, all my worries were realized :P

      • tokyobassist

That la-la-la attitude with gamers pisses me off or when they start dropping the n-bomb to invalidate real grievances.

    • desponent

Before the game actually out, XIII reception was generally positive IIRC.

Now that we’ve seen Lightning strike three time at the same place (and more incoming), well you can’t really blame the hate after that.

    • FlareKnight

That’s because the XIII trilogy had a lot of issues. Of course people would hope the next game would be better.

That’s basically been the cycle since X really. Basically hoping Final Fantasy will get itself going again.

    • Seifer90

XIII was pretty mediocre but at least the sequels greatly improved the game.

Lightning Returns is criminally underrated when it arguably has one of the best combat systems in the Final Fantasy series.

    • DarthBrian

No, everyone clamored for Versus XIII.

      Also, I liked XIII.

    • MrFinalgamer

Does that mean type-0 is the new vrisis core?

    • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Remember when FFXII was hated and everyone clamoured for FFXIII?

      • Pekola

        Exactly.

      • Budgiecat

        until they played it

  • Wolf Star

this is why people need to stop bitching about the “gameplay” and “this is not final fantasy anymore” everyone knew how gameplay is going to be, Kingdom heart style gameplay. Why whine now? Whatever I’m still buying it.

    • Gustavo Rosario

      I’m bitching cause I can’t switch characters =[

      • Wolf Star

        Oh… :/

    • Budgiecat

Yeah well some say we saw playable party members in older gameplay footage and well tabata saying it was removed here confirms it so, yeah that alone made it not like KH; also commandeering enemy mecha and controlling airships is still up in the air.

We’ve been getting ‘streamlined’ Final Fantasy games ever since FF X, so the initial news of Versus XIII was always very promising..

      • Wolf Star

8 years of waiting.. It’s been a lie then :(

        • Budgiecat

          Its just cray cray man

I mean….yeah not on the fail levels of Duke Nukem Forever, but Goddamn is this annoying because in that 9 years, we will have had 3 Witcher games, 3 Mass Effect games, 3 Dragon Age games, 5 Uncharted games, 4 Halo games, 4 Gears of War games, 2 Fallout games, 3 Elder Scrolls games 3 Souls games and a Bloodborne, and God knows how many Ass Creed, Warriors and CoD games :P

          • Wolf Star

We have like 8 ass creed games and 9 COD :3 hold on it doesn’t end there, we will give out a free blade so you can be ezio xD lol jk

            • Budgiecat

I see you dared not attempt to count all the Warriors games :P

              • Wolf Star

                It’s over 9,000!!! X3

                • Budgiecat

                  dub error! It’s over 8,000!

                  • Wolf Star

                    It’s over 99999999999999999 :P

          • Yuntu

Yeah SE really needs to think about how they will develop games after XV. They can’t allow KH3 to take that long, or even XVI ( though that’s probably way in the future, except if they are allready working on it … which I doubt ).

          • DarthBrian

We’ve also had 4 Final Fantasy games. :p

      • Yuntu

Playing as a different char wasn’t really a KH thing, atleast for the main titles ( except I missed something, can’t clearly remember on KH2 ) … but the fact that he basically confirmed that they scrapped the switching is the thing that bothers me. Though I’m a fanboy and nothing will change my decision to buy it, but that feature would’ve still been nice.

        • Budgiecat

Well yeah, switching characters on the fly was never something you could do in KH (though I always thought it’d be cool too), but even in KH BBS and KH DDD, you could use different characters.
In this, you’re just “Noctis”, which makes it no different than Layle in FF CC the Crystal Bearers, or Zack in FF Crisis Core, both spin offs.

Now I understand initially “Versus XIII” wasnt treated as a ‘main Final Fantasy’ as much as FF XIII was, and that the name change was primarily marketing PR BS to save face for S-E, and I was never of the opinion that FF XI and FF XIV should have been given main title numbers (should of been called “Final Fantasy Online 1 & 2 imo), but if you’re gonna change the title to a main game, it damn well better have full party control and no gameplay cuts..

          • Yuntu

I agree, and I would like to know how they decided on that. But guess we just can guess about why it doesn’t has this feature.

    • DarthBrian

But it’s not Kingdom Hearts style gameplay. If it were KH style gameplay I wouldn’t be disappointed. Never in KH did you *hold down an button* to auto-dodge or auto-attack.. Even in Chain of Memories, though you’re setting your “deck of attacks”, you can still switch manually between which card you want to be next. In this the computer figures out which is the best attack in your deck to use. This is not KH style gameplay whatsoever.

      • Anime10121

It still sounds like you can press X instead of holding it….

        • DarthBrian

And pressing X will still auto-select the next weapon from your deck instead of letting you choose it.

        • cheese puffs

no pressing, just holding. “The actions change depending on your circumstances—things like whether you’re guarding and whether the timing is right.”

preset combos is still a thing, and i don’t like it. why they don’t just add a manual option like they did for rpg fans with rpg-mode in dissidia, is beyond me…

          • Anime10121

I’m thinking its more along the lines of what Darthbrian said. I mean theres no way pushing X will do NOTHING. I guarantee he’ll still attack just the same as if you held it!

Still, I dont see the problem with preset combos… Kingdom Hearts also has those :/ only difference is you press X instead of holding it in KH. This game will also have more varied attacks since they’ll change based on the situation, whereas in KH, they’re the same no matter what (and before someone says KH has abilities to equip, no one confirmed this game wont have the same :/)

            • cheese puffs

…true! kh did have preset combos.

welp, just hope i feel a little better about the game once i play it, ’cause as of right now, it’s just not clicking with me.

There’s something rewarding about mashing a button to execute each individual attack rather than holding it down and watching the character do the combos. it makes you feel like you’re the one in control, not the game playing itself….

      • Wolf Star

I’m confused, so it’s like not KH gameplay anymore? What gameplay is this then? :/

        • DarthBrian

It’s more like Type-0 except simplified is how it sounds to me.

          • Wolf Star

I want type-0 even more now lol

            • DarthBrian

Type-0 is cool. It’s just not what I wanted from either Versus XIII or XV. >_>

Also, to clarify, in Type-0, there’s no auto-weapon selection, it always uses the one weapon you have equipped. It’s the hold down the button stuff that sounds similar to Type-0 with the direction button instructing the game what type of attack to use.

              • Wolf Star

I never played type-0, and really?? Awww that kind of sucks :/ the trailer seems awesome.

                • DarthBrian

I think you can play it with pressing the button too. I didn’t play it much either.

                  • Wolf Star

I already preordered it. :P it looks cool

      • GuardianLion

Play the demo (if you plan on it), then worry. On paper, things can sound one way but end up being completely different when put into practice.

    • Zancrow

This “this is not final fantasy anymore”-argument is ridiculous, anyway, considering every FF is different.
SE will never go back to the old Battle System, anyway.

      • Wolf Star

        Agreed :/ just saying lol

    • tokyobassist

Because the last update didn’t state anything about the combat aside from “hold button to attack or defend”. That sounded like a watered down Kingdom Hearts to a lot of people familiar with that gameplay. Of course it wasn’t until THIS update that things were clarified.

I’m excited about the game but the gameplay is the thing that hasn’t really been discussed at lengths. In fact I hate the fact that you can’t switch party members. That’s just ridiculous to say it’s impossible to do when Type-0 is directed by the same fuckin’ guy lol.

  • DarthBrian

“Because it’s a core game, we have casual controls.”

    Does not compute?

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

Think he’s saying because it’s one of the mainline games, it has to be accessible to everyone.

      • DarthBrian

Versus when it was “Versus XIII” and it wasn’t a mainline game it was going to be something completely different and more hardcore? And now that it’s a mainline game they have to make it more casual?

        That’s how I’m interpreting this then. >_>

        • Yuntu

To be honest: FF never was a really hard game to play through, except the optional stuff.

But yeah I guess what you say is true – if it wouldn’t be “XV” they would do some things different.

          • Seifer90

Pretty much this, FF has always been kinda easy/casual except for super bosses, most of the time if not always you only have to grind to defeat enemies.

            • DarthBrian

Final Fantasy II disagrees. That game is pretty hard if you don’t know what you’re doing at the beginning.

              • Seifer90

Wasn’t Final Fantasy II considered the worst FF in the series?

                • DarthBrian

                  Yup.

                • Yuntu

                  Isn’t that 3?

              • Yuntu

Every rule needs an exception :p

    • Yuntu

I guess he meant “mainstream” with core.

  • BlueCereal

On the bright side the new gameplay footage does look pretty good.

    • Anime10121

Reading comments first, then I’m gonna watch the vids :D

  • 罪罰

Now this is more like it.

    • MrFinalgamer

No! This is the worst FF game evah!!!!

      • Djkarl Pierre

Yeah KH is better, button mashing attack button. Switch between sora and his magical lesbian party members Goofy and Donald during combat and lets not for get playing it “shit got real mode” for more challenging gameplay. >:D

  • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

No way this game will be the “Best FF Ever” as you claim, Tabata. Don’t know what you’re thinking making such a claim when it uses this simplified battle system.

    • 罪罰

Because the previous FF had such deep turn based mechanics, amirite?

      • Seifer90

Well, Lightning Returns had a lof customizable options and it had a kinda deep combat.

        • Zackasaur

          Yeah, LR was fairly involved.

I would even argue that FFXIII’s class-based party dynamic gave me more strategic tboughts than traditional turn-based games do.

          I love the Bully paradigm.

          • Yuntu

Atleast later on in the game that is true. You really changed tactics so fast and often that the combat felt tactical.

            • Zackasaur

Definitely. FFXIII’s solid combat system just took too long to realise itself and let players experiment.

        • Yuntu

True that, looking forward to play it on PC to mod that stupid time. Don’t like beeing under pressure while playing a RPG.

          • Seifer90

I can’t wait for the lewd mods xD

            • Yuntu

              Inb4 every character is naked.

      • MrFinalgamer

To be fair, the gambit system is fairly deep.

        • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Gambits are deeper than anything we’ve seen so far in FFXV.

          • MrFinalgamer

Except the gambit system in XV

            • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

It’s not called a Gambit system and have you even seen patent documents? It doesn’t look to be as in-depth as the Gambit system in FFXII.

      • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Yes, you’re right. FFXII battle system is already more exhaustively in-depth than what we’ve seen of FFXV.

        • vishmarx

do you realize ff 12 has been out for ages and we barely know about 15

    • Zackasaur

      Simplified? LOL

Mechanically, it’s the most active and complex. It’s also a technical marvel.

If you want turn-based, play Bravely Second. c:

But FFXV is shaping up to be my ideal FF.

      • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

FFXII battle system is more complex and it was a PS2 game.

        • Zackasaur

          lolol

          Sarcasm, I hope.

Though your username is pretty shady.

    • Guest

I don’t know what you meant by that but choosing attack command from menu is the most simplified battle system. Take example, Dark Souls, it wouldn’t be a Dark Souls without action combat. To me, turn based battle system is more casual than real time action battle. In turn based system, you can take time thinking you next move as long as you want. You can’t do that in action game, there’s no such a thing, you forced to make your next move in an instant. Hence turn based system is more casual.

      • 罪罰

        chess is casual
        confirmed

      • Budgiecat

        Have you played Natural Doctrine?

I heard it was suuuuuuuper casual

      • CeroSuerte

I cant recall how many times ive played boss battles (sometime last battle) in turn based games while am eating or half sleeping..

      • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

Only being able to control one character is definitely more simplified than past FF battle systems.

    • KingBulbinX

      http://youtu.be/2ofgPBz_7JQ

Yeah! Look at how complex and hardcore the older games’ battle systems were!

      ….
      ….
….yeah. FFXV is probably the most complex main title gameplay in the series.

      • Manny Being Manny

Difference is that battle system actually looks fun and rewarding, while this is just mindless button mashing…

        • Hiroyuki_Ito_XVI

          Exactly. Somebody that gets it.

        • KingBulbinX

Going through menus is fun and rewarding to you?

Do you also enjoy watching paint dry and starring out the window?

Old school ATB gameplay is about as fun and rewarding as looking for your socks in the morning.

          • LordKaiser

Different taste for different people although turn based was simple it requires a brain to manage the resources.

            • AdamBoy64

Totally. I’ve had plenty of absurdly intense turn-based battles.
I don’t find them any less fun at all. In general, you spend more time thinking things through, and planning.

            • KingBulbinX

It requires more brains to dodge and defend in real-time than manage menus and remember weaknesses.

Nothing wrong with those kinds of games, all my favorite games are made by Sting and NIS and they’re mostly turn-based.

But to call an action RPG a brainless button masher (or he said), when they actually require more brains, is just stupid.

              • LordKaiser

Yes it’s true that action RPGs require brain power as well but it comes with practice and it’s not too hard to learn about enemy patters to dodge and block.

Now some action games have monsters with a hidden weakness or some of these action RPGs have overwhelming puzzles like Alundra.. Well Alundra is not Action RPG but a Action Adventure like Zelda so you get my point.

About Turn based RPGs don’t underestimate them. They can also be more frustrating than you think in difficulty and resource management and they can be fun if done right.

      • LordKaiser

The sound effects of the GBA version bleeds my ears. Here’s the PSP version.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83vCkplpsMw

        Spoilers btw.

      • Zackasaur

        True.

Glad to see someone stating the obvious when it apparently needs to be said.

      • rickscythe

        Hahaha… Turn-based vs Action-oriented RPG became a nice discussion here :)

I don’t think FFXV battle system will be that simple as people are assuming, although i don’t think it will be THAT intricated system with lots of gear, items, customizations and such.

That being said, I do want to see a FF back to it’s roots with a turn-based battle system, but not the one like the video up there. I’m sure SE has capable minds to create some nice new turn-based battle system that maintain the traits from old ones and, of course, have a modern approach using the hardware from current generation. I think it’s a matter of sit down, think about it, put it on paper (you know, ideas and such) and try to work on it.
Of course that seems to be not their intention right now (and don’t know if it’ll ever be), but i think it’s possible.

For me the advantage of turn-based system is that you can actually see everything that is happening on the battle while on a action-oriented battle with a party if you turn your back to your party members while fighting other enemies you’ll not see what is happening to them (on the screen). I personally like to have full knowledge of what’s happening during a fight in a RPG game… also, in my opinion, the possibility for making strategies during the battle is higher on turn-based than on action-oriented RPGs.

Finally, i’m pretty excited about this game despite all thoughts against it and I really hope it will be a good one.

  • Anime10121

GOT DAMN looks like I missed a lot at work last night O.O

But like I said, sounds like NOTHING to be worried about! While I’m slightly depressed about the no character switching, everything else sounds pretty damn good!

    • Felix Samuel

Its really2 good, the gameplay is really fun, having a fast paced system…previously I doubt it but now…just wow ,, lol ^_^ just curious about the summon/eidolon and etc. This is gonna be great! Can’t wait for it ^_^ btw Noctis seems so OP lol

    • Calbury

Plenty to worry about, but ooooook.

    • Budgiecat

Still a lot of unanswered questions and a MAIN FF game where you only control one character is something to be disappointed about.

Especially when the director has already made a FF game where you could lol

  • Red Makuzawa

If you just want to watch the new gameplay footage. Here it is:
    Enjoy! :)

    • Yuntu

This video has really low quality ( thanks to the stream ) so my eyes can’t really make it out, but it seems kinda smooth running ( though I assume this is played on a PC ) … I don’t need 60 fps but a smooth game is always nice, specially for a action-oriented one.

      • Anime10121

I think Tabata confirmed they’re aiming for a set 30FPS in the final game (dont quote me on that though, as I’m not sure if thats exactly what he said)

        • LordKaiser

          30? lol damn!

          • Anime10121

Considering this aint a twitch heavy action game like Devil May Cry, a stable 30FPS should be more than efficient.

            • Budgiecat

sure looks like it though :P

            • Zackasaur

              Definitely more than efficient.

That beats sacrificing visuals, enemy complexity, world size, etc. for a pointless/useless fps increase. :P

I value a game that is well optimised for what it hopes to accomplish.

              • Budgiecat

                2 yrs work revising 8 years work….

  • Anime10121

Really surprised how the questions being asked are actually GOOD questions for a change! And they’re actually answered instead of no comments, and “youll find out later” XD

    • Budgiecat

Well they kinda have to since its a Q&A of footage they already showed and explained partially (albeit vaguely) of at tGS

I mean yeah S-E trolls a lot (Sony PS4 JPN Launch comes to mind), but that would be ridiculous (oh um….please be excited” *leaves 1 minute in*) :P

      • Anime10121

I love Nomura…but if this had been an interview with him, none of this shit would have got answered in a meaningful way… He likes to give more cryptic and vague responses or “nonanswers” to most questions asked…

Like I said, Nomura’s one of my favorite directors, but I just wanna yell at him sometimes to just answer the damn question already XD

        • GuardianLion

          Yes.

On the other hand though, some people unintentionally ask spoilery questions, or don’t allow for happy surprises.

Maintaining an air of mystery is difficult in this day and age for any source of media.

    • British_Otaku

Shocking right? You would expect an interviewer to throw softball questions and the interviewee to be like: http://projectcrystallis.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/cdtl3nbecbni.jpg

Well done on both parties here.

I was always considering making this my first (modern?) FF game I play and now it has gained my interest again.

Gonna get Smash tomorrow anyway? I’ll wreck most of the people who haven’t had like a month to get familiar, but want some matches with people who aren’t strangers.

      • Anime10121

Thought about it…but I’d rather wait for the Wii U version, as Smash just dont “feel” right to me on a handheld, add to that, the fact that I GREATLY prefer larger screens to tiny ones and yeah…Wii U Smash is pretty much the only Smash for me :P

But yeah, I’m really surprised about how open they’re trying to be with the game so far… Seems uncanny that we’re actually getting REAL information on this game after all this time XD

        • British_Otaku

I see. Smash Bros grew on me on the 3DS (partially as portables are my thing and I loved emulated N64 Smash Bros on any computer I could spot), the only thing which is really missing is the possibility of sharing multiplayer with familiar people (best if they are in the same room as you) which will be remedied when everyone has a copy. I’ll face you in the Wii U version then.

Here is hoping that future interviews have even a hint of being this open with details. Being vague just leads to fans destroying each other before the game even releases.

  • Sol badass

Well if attacks alter with the directional buttons I guess I can accept that

  • TheDevil

Oh, don’t mind me. Just passin’ by, checkin’ if a shitstorm had already settled in. Good interview btw. And thanks Olivia and Sal.

    • Anime10121

Yep, unfortunately, it seems like its pretty much inevitable with this game, and for the life of me, I can not figure out why :/

XIII, once we finally saw gameplay, I could understand the criticisms…what we’ve seen of this… I just dont :/

      • TheDevil

        Haters gonna hate, I guess.

And well, big franchises like Final Fantasy tend to draw in a lot a hatred. Especially considering how XIII divided a lot of opinions even in the fanbase.

Personally, I think the game looks fine. Could be better? Sure. But I don’t hate what I see. Sometimes you just gotta sit back and enjoy the ride even if it’s a rather bumpy one.

        • tokyobassist

FFXIII is a shit stain that’s hard to get out.

It’s by far the most polarizing game in the franchise so coming off the heels of that pile of rubbish leaves people skeptical about jumping into another FF game ya know?

Don’t blame them especially when this is essentially the Duke Nukem Forever of JRPGs.

          • Anime10121

            Over exaggeration :/

XIII wasnt the best, but its FAR from 2…or 3 for that matter. I’m not a fan of XIII either (though I can at least admit it was a good game in general, just not nearly the best Final Fantasy)…

And XV is FAR from Duke Nukem Forever… that game generally ALWAYS looked like garbage, while anyone who thinks XV in its current state looks like a “bad game”, either really need to get their eyes checked, or well, I dont even know what else to tell em :/

            • tokyobassist

I’m not talking about how it looks. I’m saying it’s similar to DNF in that it’s hyped to hell and back and has a high potential of success or failure which will either put this series back on track or in the dirt.

              • GuardianLion

I’ll never forget the moment I finally got to Gran Pulse in FFXIII, looked around, saw a few enemies fighting each other….. and then turned the game off.

My interest in finishing that game hit 0. That is inexcusable in my book.

                • Budgiecat

Didnt remind you of Calm Lands in FF X/X-2?

      • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

Absurdly long development cycle is the problem. I made a post about it above. With that said, the comments here are a bit better this time. I think… lol.

        • Zackasaur

I think they’re improving, as well.

  • DarthBrian

Just to clarify my earlier curmudgeonliness from the comments section, it’s really just disappointment that I feel towards what I thought this game was supposed to be versus what it’s turning out to be. It’s probably still a fun game and I want to play it. But it’s just not what I was hoping for. At least based on what they’ve shown us so far.

The footage in the clip above though is WAY better than what they showed us at TGS though. So if combat is more like that, then fine. But it’s not really what I was hoping for initially.

  • Seifer90

    My final thoughts about this:

The system looks pretty good on it’s own right now, looks even faster than when it was Versus.

The only bummer here is no character switching, which still could easily
change if enough people make enough noise, the game is still more than a
year away from release so it’s not like they couldn’t add it back in.

    • GuardianLion

Maybe I just play RPGs wrong, but I rarely ever use character switching when the main character is a walking armory.

      But that’s just me.

      • Budgiecat

In Zill O’ll everyone was fun to use.

        Variety n stuffs

  • tokyobassist

It doesn’t sound all THAT bad but real talk, all you need to do to appeal to casuals is to not make it turn-based.

I’m dead serious. Talk to any casual gamer IRL that has dabbled in Final Fantasy games before. Turn-based is essentially a deal breaker for most casuals. No need to really water down mechanics as long as combat is real time because casuals want to press buttons and go full retard, not strategize.

    • aeris bueller

Exactly, because everyone knows action and strategy are mutually exclusive concepts. That’s why there’s no such thing as strategically playing a fighting game or a shooter.

      • Orichalon Hades

        that’s sarcasm right?

if it is, i blame the internet for not having a sarcasm button

        • An Tran

          I really hope so.

          • Six

Nah, he is being totally serious. Those plebs who play Counter Strike and Street Fighter need to get on the level of their turn-based JRPG playing superiors.

        • aeris bueller

It is sarcasm. I was reacting to the implied (false) dichotomy of strategy and action.

          • Orichalon Hades

            oh thank god

      • Budgiecat
      • vishmarx

        eh.the ignorance

    • Six

All you need to do to appeal to “casuals” is call it Final Fantasy.

      • Anime10121

        Yep :3

      • vishmarx

and make it turn based ,no matter how repetitive and boring to appeal to hardcores?

        • Six

Sure, why not. I don’t really care.

    • 強大なサム(Mighty Sam)

I wholeheartedly agree.the turn based gameplay in FFXIII and Total War series was an absolute let down.I always believed FF series has a lot of potential for real time combat.if it wasn’t for cheat codes and the great story, there was no way in hell I would’ve completed FFVII.

      • Manny Being Manny

I guess younger players who need their twitch based combat is the reason Final Fantasy feels the need to change its genre… Younger players couldn’t even complete FF7 because it wasn’t action packed enough? Sigh..

        • Orichalon Hades

          i blame ADD

        • tokyobassist

Well to be fair I work a ton of hours and I’m not trying to sit through first 3 hours of Final Fantasy VII just to get to the main meat of the game.

Could be a issue with pacing in JRPGs as well.

        • 強大なサム(Mighty Sam)

Turn based combat needs many preparations, including getting loads of different items for different situations, leveling up a lot,and have a lot of patience.the real deal breaker for me is the patience part, because it’s just stupid to wait for an attack bar to reload.also your enemies could sometimes attack two times in one turn, killing your potential chances of healing and attacking and thus making you lose the battle.I tried to play by the rules, but the game kicked my ass in the very first boss(the game didn’t even give me a freaking chance to prepare myself).another example is Safer Sephiroth and his annoying Supernova(every time he used it I wanted to quit the game because of the ridiculous cinematic) and Palehorse spells.I had a very hard time defeating him even with gameshark codes.

      • vishmarx

FF 7 was amazing back in the day.
that being said i just dont have the patience to sit through turn based combat anymore,
its an archaic design that was limited by hardware,
why do you not see people whining about character sprites being removed and 2d maps ? im sure we could have 4k ff with hd sprites and a glorious 2d world map with amazing textures ,
        would have been awesome right?

        • Manny Being Manny

The fact you still see so many people making retro style games shows not everyone only cares about prettier graphics or “New” gameplay styles.

To me, A PS1/PS2 style FF with upgraded graphics and presentation values would be the best.

          • vishmarx

youre telling me you would not be whining if ff 16 is a 2d turn based rpg?
because we have 900 of them on smartphones and no one seems to give a shit

            • Manny Being Manny

I would rather it be 3D, but if there was a 2D FF game on 3DS or whatever I wouldn’t be against it.

Bravely Default is pretty much a PS1 level FF in graphics and content, and its my favorite game of the year.

              • vishmarx

and somehow you believe a mainline ff on consoles like that will work?
these titles are ambitious , i give that to you, but they dont run businesses , and good few people buy it because they still prefer the old systems but you cant gamble a huge title such as this based on something that is good on 3ds.
a transition of bravely to consles would move less copies than on 3ds where the cost of making such games is insignificant

            • Guest

he was whining when they announced it would have no female cast. apparently he hates playing with male characters.

              • vishmarx

was he whining when ff x-2 was announced all female?so either he’s biased or he just loves to whine about everything

                • Manny Being Manny

Of course not. I prefer a turn based RPG with attractive girls over an action game with a boyband.

                  • cheese puffs

                    lololol

Edit: well at least your honest…

                  • vishmarx

except in ff x2 you were literally in a band, you even had a popstar battle job and you act like youve never hung out with boys except when youre performing in a concert
                    blind bias it is!

                    • Solomon_Kano

                      lmao

        • Budgiecat

this awesome and innovative FF thats taken almost 10 years to make can’t even produce full party play control :P

          • vishmarx

and somehow youre here and not playing alphadia genesis on your phone which has 10 playable characters and is turn based
            weird

            • Budgiecat

Ultima, which came out before any turn based RPG, was a real time action RPG. So “hardware limitations” was never an excuse or a reason.

It simply was a game design choice.

Because in Ultima, you could only control 1 character,

then DQ and FF came along and you could control a whole party

Fast forward 30 years and now look: FF XV: an action RPG that cant control a full party :P

              Innovation! lol

        • osa

Turn based is not archaic design. It’s just a different combat system some people enjoy more. It makes it possible to approach combat in ways that action games will never be able to.

          • Manny Being Manny

Yep, its a lot more team and strategy based instead of just mashing buttons with one character. I prefer playing games for the strategic element, so I will always rather have a turn based system over an action game where you just play as one character running around slashing enemies.

Action combat just doesn’t seem to be something that would fit a party based franchise like Final Fantasy, especially since you can’t even change characters on the fly.

          • vishmarx

it is also something that was abandoned more or less 10 years ago
            the makes it archaic

      • Budgiecat

suddenly you don’t sound so mighty anymore Sam…. : /

        • 強大なサム(Mighty Sam)

The “mighty” is a comedic representor of my surname.my surname,Pahlavan,in English means “strong one” or “Paladin”.I thought that using the word “strongman” sounds a bit serious so I chose to use “mighty” like Mighty Guy in Naruto series who’s not only a very strong ninja, but also a funny guy.the “Sam” name is the second part of my first name,Hessam, but I thought that Sam sounds better in English so I cut the first part.not that I wanted to use my real name as my username, but still I created a username that is very close to my real name.so there you have it Budgie, you just made me tell my name to loads of strangers…

          • Budgiecat

      • Seifer90

I thought he was a boss, not a summon.

        • DarthBrian

That’s typical of FF. They’re originally bosses you have to fight, but once you defeat them they are yours to control.

          • Seifer90

It’s not always the case though.

    • rickscythe

      You can summon weapons :p

  • Kenny ケニー

    Praying it have one…

    • TheSocialStigma

      What’s a safety town?

  • Abysswalker90

I’ve been a little butthurt about this new battle system myself, but I’ve been thinking…

wasn’t FF always about simplified one button control? you choose your desired action, push x, and your character automatically does it’s thing.
how is it so much different than what they show here? It’s pretty much the same only with pretty graphics and the illusion of being action oriented.

    • vishmarx

this, i dunno why people considered old ff so complex.
they were more of a chore than complex.harder ones needed more shopping easier ones needed a weakness spell
every battle could be beaten without any skill as long as you had info on the monster,

the only reason it was turn based was because they hardware was very limited to fit in the scope of what they wanted to show.
      now thats not case

      • Torbjorn Olsson

Previous FF were fairly complex/strategical which is the point. It was very much about choosing the right magical spells on the right enemies — by the sounds of it we don’t even have direct access to magic which has been a huge staple of the entire series. It’s not about the one button, it’s about the new director seeming to simplify everything way too much too try to appeal to a wider audience.

        >the only reason it was turn based was because they hardware was very limited to fit in the scope of what they wanted to show.now thats not case

I guess current hardware is too limited to properly switch characters in battle for FF XV…

        • cheese puffs

          Loll

    • Solomon_Kano

I think in this situation it’s because people were expecting this to not be the case with Versus/XV, because it had been touted as a more action-based game and, while still more action oriented than the FF of yore, the system here — as described, anyway — doesn’t seem to fit that image. So, the disappointment is more in how XV’s battle system (seemingly) compares to other action-RPGs’ style of input than how it compares to other FF games’ style of input.

    • LordKaiser

This game was never seen as a core Final Fantasy Game but a Darker Kingdom Hearts like game within a Final Fantasy world.

      • Budgiecat

but as time went on, whatever scarce bit of info we were fed led us to believe it would be a sprawling open world epic adventure wit full party control, explorable world map, airships, day to night & weather changes, real time weapon changing, 3rd person shooting, destructable environments, and controllable vehicles and commandeering enemy mecha, making it way more epic in scale than any KH so far.

Now we get the corporate downsizing :P

        • LordKaiser

Yup and that’s what I’m a afraid of and what could lead me to disappointment.

    PUT CHARACTER SWITCHING BACK IN!!!!!!!!!!

  • Seifer90

I am gonna make some XV gifs but i’d rather make webms, it’s a shame that Disqus doesn’t support webm format.

  • bloodiOS

I will refrain from judging the combat prior to playing the demo. In any case, an image showing the control scheme would really be appreciated.

    • Joe Hill

I’m guessing it’ll be something like this (holding PS4 controller in hand for reference)
      Right Analog Stick = Movement

Left Analog Stick = Camera Movement

X = Guard (Counterattack with Square if guard is successful)

      X+Analog Stick = Dodge Roll

X (Hold) = Auto Evade (Consumes MP)

      O = Jump

Square = Attack (Hold for Charged attack)

Triangle = Assignable Magic or Summon

R1 = Lock on (off) to enemy

      R2 (Hold) = Warp reticle

      R2 (released) = Teleport

      R3 = Center Camera Position

L1 = Cycle through locked on enemies

      L2 = Alternate Controls for Face buttons ( X = Phoenix Down, O = Cure, Square = Fire, etc;)

L3 (Press down left stick) = assignable

Then there’s the Dpad which could be used for special attacks or switching AI move set (for AI party members, customizable in menu) weapons etc..

…and on PS4 there’s the touchpad that could be utilized somehow.

      • KingNigma

I think you got your analog sticks mixed.

        • Joe Hill

          Good call

  • monkey d’ beast_07

i just make meme for this (laugh!)

  • vertical09

Don’t worry guys. We’ll get our character switching!

    Through DLC.

    • Zackasaur

Nah, the game design is instead more refined now. lol

Instead of splitting resources, the design is now more focused and allows for much better and more involved Noctis control.

It’s a trade-off, but the more I think about it, the more I understand and even like it. I prefer optimised design over split/cluttered design.

      • Budgiecat

Maybe if the game was a year or two in development, but this is a AAA game almost 10 years in the making so seriously this sucks :P

  • new_tradition

So it’s not even that you can set your party leader before battle and that switching in mid-battle was the problem. It will always be Noctis the player controls?

    • Calbury

      Yes. Isn’t it glorious? (not)

      • Budgiecat

He’s even more Ramirez than Ramirez in Cod MW2…

    • Zackasaur

Yeah, they’ve decided that the gameplay systems work best when they are tailored around the player controlling the most mechanically complex character… Noctis.

The old system would have involved mostly playing Noctis and switching for specific things (like shooting a wing). That is cool in concept, but it forces the designers to design enemies around this system. By just working on Noctis, they can instead use those resources for a more free-form approach and for enhancing his weapon options, combos, controls, teleportation, etc.

I was interested in the switching system, but I totally understand the reasons for the change. It’s resource and design optimisation. And I can’t wait to play a more refined Noctis.

      • LordKaiser

        Why can’t they do both?

        • Zackasaur

          “Resource and design optimisation.”

FFXV is doing things no game has done before already, so adding entirely new gameplay systems to what is already there is a matter of multiple years of development… And even with all those years and millions of dollars, it would probably still require certain concessions to enemy design.

Even when it was running (as well as consuming resources from the main playable character and restricting enemy design), aspects like the third-person shooting were looking a bit rough.

So asking “why can’t they do both?” is kind of like asking why the world map can’t be four times larger, but even that would be simpler.

          • LordKaiser

Ok so the reason is that they reached the PS4 limits already? That’s very bad!

Then Again I don’t think that it would take that long since they just had to port that system and add the teleporting thing to it. The 1rst person thing etc. was already there.

            • Zackasaur

No, I didn’t suggest hardware limitations (though FFXV is certainly well ahead of any other multiplatform release in this regard).

Resources are inherently limited. They can spend the dev power, money, and time making the Noctis gameplay even better and designing enemies around that system, or they can fragment those resources across four completely different systems (again, something no game has ever done before) and have to figure out how to make enemies fit those characters so that the side characters (those who are not Noctis) feel like they have a purpose.

That idea is nifty in its own way, definitely. But this should result in a much more refined and focused experience.

And people are over-emphasising the “porting.” A lot of new development is still happening, so this decision has implications for how devs will be spending their time for the rest of development.

They clearly play-tested a lot and found this to be the smartest decision, and I don’t have much trouble seeing why. We already knew that Noctis would be the main playable character, so the role for the side characters would be special techniques. Putting so many resources into having players manually control those when they could be done through a cooperative system instead (and thus free up those resources for other purposes) doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. We were always going to mostly spend our time with the teleporting Phantom Sword prince. :P

              • Budgiecat

A lot of this time has been wasted porting over to PS4 and trying to complete a whole new engine, while making a whole nother temp engine as well for reasons…(Ebony)

                • Zackasaur

I wouldn’t call that waste. The switch to PS4 has done wonders for the game and is basically required for it to sell adequately and maintain relevancy in the overall industry.

And Ebony was important, because it was the tool for taking PS3 resources and upgrading them for PS4. While they did that, Luminous was further developed to take those new PS4 assets and make them even better (while providing for things like more expansive environments).

                  • Budgiecat

I dunno because with an install base of.. 80 million vs 15 million and counting (plus PC meh) and people getting more and more jaded as time goes on and on…

We’ll never really know for sure since we wont get thefull story or see Versus XIII beta

                    • Zackasaur

It’s a common misconception to pretend that the difference in install base affects the difference in sales. Cross-gen games typically are selling far more on 8th gen than on 7th gen, and that divide is only widening with time. The type of person who owns a PS4 or an Xbone is the type of person more likely to buy a high volume of games. Meanwhile, many people stuck in 7th gen are not buying cross-gen games because they would rather wait for when they upgrade.

But, yes, certain things will always remain a mystery.

                    • Budgiecat

We’ll also never know the amount spent on making this game as opposed to them letting everyone in the galaxy know tomb Raider 2013’a budget and earnings..

              • LordKaiser

Scrapping something completely that worked is also a waste of resources. They’ve spent time and money on what they did to Versus, many like it so why scrap something that was well received by the audience?

                • Budgiecat

Seriously, I could understand if they product tested it or had players go through a beta and it was a situation like FF XIV 1.0 disasterballs, but they didnt even do that, so it was most likely Wada and his dumbass business decisions costing S-E even more money

                • Zackasaur

They determined that it wouldn’t be well received when we actually played it, based on play-testing.

And scrapping failed ideas, unfinished concepts, etc. is normal to every game design process. The difference here is that, with Versus/XV’s long development cycle, we’ve seen more of the process than we usually get to see out of other games.

                  • Budgiecat

Wada made the call, who is no longer President :3

                    Reliable Wadaburgers :P

                    • Zackasaur

Wada had nothing to do with fundamental gameplay design like playable characters.

But he had a lot to do with horrible executive decisions that repeatedly interfered with Nomura’s team and directly caused repeated Versus XIII delays.

And no Wadaburgers for me, please. :c

                    • Budgiecat

Nomura said Wada was the one that made the decision to move it to PS4 when beta was complete in 2012.

Now which do you think woulda sold better? FFXIII LR or FF Versus XIII on PS3?

                  • LordKaiser

It looked that it would work fine from the 1rst play testing.

                    • Zackasaur

Sure, but we got a tiny PV glimpse of chosen footage.

They’re actually playing and designing the game. I don’t think they’d take out old work for the lulz. I think Tabata is being pretty frank when he asserts that the game worked better with a focus on Noctis. And we can of course tell based on that that resources then went into adding more to Noctis’s controls/options and to converting the side cast with a series of co-op moves that can be triggered by the player.

I can see why some are a bit upset about the change in an otherwise fantastic looking game, of course. But I think we have to consider this critically from a game design perspective, with Tabata’s words, new footage, and some safe background knowledge about the game design process.

I don’t feel comfortable getting mad about it when the developers felt that it was a productive change. I’m certainly loving what I’m seeing, after all.

          • Budgiecat

            hard to tell really

  • Calbury

Yah… no… sorry Square Enix, but the game’s battle system and limitations still sound bad.

    • Zackasaur

      wat

      • Calbury

        You heard me.

    • Fainaru Luna

You can’t say it will be limited for sure, because there only 55% in development and there are still things that they haven’t shown us and might add in.

I know for some it’s kinda lame that you can’t switch party, but look at it this way. If you have only one character then you can focus more growth on that particular character and do things a little different.

      • Calbury

I can say it will be limited in at least one way for sure, they have confirmed multiple times that there is no party switching, which is limiting.

        • Fainaru Luna

Yeah, true but like I said they still have more to show us and the game is only half complete.

          • Budgiecat

half ported from a completed PS3 beta

            Now with unnecessary changes

                      Yeah, fuck Wada.

                    • Budgiecat

I hear he’s running SHINRA in Midgar, uh I mean NY.

We could use a WEAPON and call our group Avalanche….

          • Calbury

But party switching will not ever be a thing, which is kind of sad. :( I am hoping the final game will be fantastic though, like I really want it to be, not just because I want it, but because it has been so long, you know? Don’t be another Duke Nukem Forever. xD

            • Fainaru Luna

In a previous post I said I was going to play as Noctis the majority of the game, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t going to play as the other members.

I’m little disappointed too, because I definitely wanted to see the gun controls of Prompto seeing how that is exclusive to him.

Yeah you bet! I don’t want this to end out like the abomination duke nukem forever XD

              • Calbury

I honestly didn’t plan to use anybody but Noctis either, but it is the idea of it you know?

            • Zackasaur

Duke Nukem Forever swapped devs repeatedly, so it was never one consistent project… The game we got was an unfinished bit of rubbish that had been developed for -maybe- two years.

With FFXV, despite all the expenses and challenges, we can at least say that SE have remained dedicated to getting it right. c:

The same can be said for how they amazingly fixed FFXIV, with 1.0 being a dud and 2.0 demonstrating remarkable commitment.

              • Budgiecat

they had no choice. Both of these games failiing would BK S-E

                • Zackasaur

Few could pull it off. That’s the point. lol

                  • Budgiecat

okay well it really shouldnt have been a monumental disaster in the first place. S-E biting off more than they can chew while ignoring 80% of their IP and making dumb cell phone games and unrealistic expectations for their adopted Western titles..

                    • Zackasaur

You already know that I agree with you on this. SE’s executives were assholes for most of last gen.

                    • Budgiecat

I dont even know how Wada made it up the corporate S-E ladder so quick only 6 months with the company and no previous experience!

                    • Zackasaur

                      Corruption.

So capitalism as usual… But even worse in Japanese culture. :P

Fortunately, now he is in a place where he might be more useful. He was not cut out for the old job.

                      He got quitted.

Others left on their own accord due “health reasons” or on ‘mutual terms’……

    • Zackasaur

It looks a hell of a lot less “limited” than the FF series tradition that I’ve played…

      • Calbury

It is more open in some things, but more limiting in others. You know what I mean? As I keep stating though, I do still plan to buy it no matter what.

        • Zackasaur

Sure, but then it’s not really particularly limited.

It’s just different. And that’s true. It has a gameplay system unique to FF and indeed unique to gaming as a whole.

The closest comparisons we can make are KH and Type-0, with this being inbetween the two in many ways. However, it also has a host of very unique aspects.

          • Calbury

            Eh… >.<;

            • Zackasaur

For me, this game is -breaking- limits. I have full character control, can teleport around (still blows my mind a bit), get to play with a character unlike any other in style, can explore a massive open world and drive the car around, use magic that is affected by weather and the environment, etc.

Things that have bothered me in more traditional action JRPGs are being dominated by the new approaches this is taking. That, to me, is very exciting.

From this perspective, you can see how previous FF games could be called the truly limited ones.

So it mostly depends on which limits concern you and how you are defining them. It’s heavily normative.

              • Budgiecat

but dun wanna play as just Noctis. this is a FF game not KH.

                • Zackasaur

People talk out of both sides of their mouths… They cry when it’s not enough like KH, and then they cry when it’s too much like KH. I don’t mean you, mind. This is just a general phenomenon that I keep observing.

                  It’s freaking crazy.

FFXV is its own game, and the developers should have the freedom to implement the systems that they think are best for the game. For a long time, we -assumed- that Noctis would be the only playable character in Versus XIII and were very pleased with that. Then we found out that other characters would be playable for specific side moves, and some people were enthusiastic about that.

Now we have learnt that that system did not work out. As a result, all resources are being poured into making Noctis play better than ever, while the uses for the allies have been shifted into cooperative commands.

I’m eager to play this game and am pretty open-minded towards the developers’ findings through play-testing. It’s been a long time since the 2011 trailer.

                  • Budgiecat

Never seen anyone crying because it wasnt KH enough.

I mean, its supposed to be a FF game.

All I’ve seen from KH community is people wanting KH III like now

From early on many people assumed and were informed by Nomura that a full playable party was involved.
this is limiting RPG party play. Its a downgrade.

                    • KingNigma

The whole “button-holding” issue can be seen as having that KH feel combat-wise being taken away from the game.

                    • Budgiecat

                      thats fairly new info though…

We’ve been doing this song and dance for 8 years

and man are my feet tired!

                    • KingNigma

New, old whatever dood it’s still a complaint that, like I said, can be seen as “not being KH enough”

though tbh apart from that i haven’t really seen how ppl can say that though

                    • Zackasaur

I’ve seen a lot of people complaining on Gematsu that it isn’t KH enough. :P

Most of that was the result of misinformation about the gameplay, but it’s still rampant.

As for the “downgrade,” we’ll have to agree to disagree. I think it’s a logical change in resources. But we’ve talked it to death, so that’s fine.

                    • Budgiecat

                      We still know very little.

                      Nomura knows all….

                    • Zackasaur

Given business norms as well as Japanese norms, I doubt we’ll learn much. v_v

              • Calbury

My main issue is the battle system it just doesn’t sit right with me.

                • Zackasaur

Well, hopefully the demo will suit you. c:

Mind, it’s going to be low-level and very alpha, so I’m sure the full FFXV will still get considerably more epic and involved.

                  • Calbury

                    Who knows at this point.

  • Budgiecat
    • Fainaru Luna

      No

      • Budgiecat

they make poor Noctis do everything!

        and he’s a prince!

        • Fainaru Luna

          Noctis isn’t you’re ordinary Prince

  • ayanami-chan

“In order to widen its appeal, we’re developing the game aware that anyone can immediately be able to play it, however the game as a whole is not casual. Because it’s a core game, we have casual controls. If you obtain good weapons and level up, you won’t have to worry about clearing the main scenarios.”

    This worries me ^

    • Zackasaur

      I can’t fathom why.

Basically every JRPG, and certainly ever Square Enix game, is like this.

It’s very hardcore and can be quite deep, especially in optional challenges. But if you’re only a moderate player, you can still clear the game by only playing the main scenarios and grinding to make your characters more powerful. In other words, if you’re not super good, you can overpower your character through leveling to make the main story scenarios less difficult.

Those players will probably never be able to conquer some things like optional bosses.

      • Olejka Petrow

Yeah, but Kingdom Hearts has difficulty modes for choosing at the start. Since this game was developed by Nomura i was hoping for something like that in FFXV, but as far as i can tell there is no hard mode.
KH have difficulty modes AND optional challanges.

        • Zackasaur

It’s too early to assume that FFXV has no difficulty modes. Tabata is adding it to Type-0 HD, for example.

But even in KH, grinding levels, getting better weapons, having more potions, etc. makes the game easier to play.

I did a Level 1 – Kingdom Key only playthrough of KHII via a hack. The levels make a huuuuge difference. :P

So, difficultly level + character building gives maximum casual – hardcore range. It’s possible that FFXV will have this. But at the very least, we know that character building alone can create a tremendous skill range.

        • vertical09

I’ll never understand why difficulty modes in RPGs is a thing…

    • Budgiecat

well removing full party control aka character switching, is a start

    • vertical09

      Nothing to worry about.
All this is saying is that if you follow the main scenario for the game, it won’t be all too difficult to clear.
Just like any other RPG’s storyline.

The real difficulty lies in sidequests and optional bosses.

      • ayanami-chan

FFIV back in the day was had a pretty tough main quest line, but maybe I just sucked…

        • Zackasaur

          It just required some grinding.

          • GuardianLion

            ^what he’s saying in a nutshell
Thus, I’m not too worried. More of the same in terms of ARPG difficulty.

        • vertical09

I’m not saying the storyline will be easy.
There’s always those one or two bosses you simply hate in the main scenario.
For me it was Seymour Omni in FFX. Jeez that guy…

          • Zackasaur

            Ugh, Seymour Omni…

My hardest fight in FFXIII was Odin. xD That particular Eidolon frustrated me.

  • Fainaru Luna

“It’s not that simple! (Laughs.) Yes, when you continue to hold down the guard button, you can basically auto-guard and evade, but it consumes MP. You can’t infinitely evade”

Glad to hear this! Had a feeling Attacking and side stepping will use a MP gauge.

This game looks promising, But I would like them speak up on the topic why Nomura left.

    • Budgiecat

Because they needed someone to vaguely blame

      • Zackasaur

Accurate. SE execs can’t take responsibility and needed to offer a sacrifice.

        • Budgiecat

Its time honored ancient Japanese tradition of self shaming

Nomura for shame now you will commit proper Sudoku..

          • Zackasaur

Their business culture is so backwards sometimes. :c

Although, the words “business culture” alone upset my stomach. lulz

            • Budgiecat

Its not just limited to business though which is what makes it sadder

              • Zackasaur

                True enough.

Though capitalism has of course agitated the problem to make it much, much worse.

                • Budgiecat

                  yeah

          • Damjan Šalov

he will commit proper logical numbered puzzle? were you thinking of the word Seppuku before writing it down? I’m kinda confused

            • Anime10121

              joke

            • cheese puffs

              dark souls joke….

              • Damjan Šalov

                oh haven’t played it

            • Budgiecat

              no you’re puzzled…

              • Damjan Šalov

                maybe

      • GuardianLion

        Sad, but true.
Just leave Nomura alone with his Kingdom Hearts baby.

        • Zackasaur

Nomura accomplishes amazing things when executives aren’t sabotaging his team at every turn.

I am going to freak out when I get KHIII in my hands.

      • Pekola

It wouldn’t surprise me if Nomura’s involvement somehow made things more difficult than they needed to be.

Besides which, the end goal is to deliver a product–not bask in rockstar glory for directing a game. The unnamed workers at Square (which often go into the credits quietly), probably understand this.

And if Nomura were a sensible man, he would also understand this. In fact, he probably does.

        • Budgiecat

Wada and FF XIII sequels and XIV 1.0 probably more to blame

      • Zackasaur

Did a bunch of comments disappear, here? lol

Anyway, you are entirely correct. This is a very typical maneuver, effectively nominating a high-profile sacrifice to receive the public shaming while the executives actually responsible go free.

It’s a relatively normal (and certainly awful) Japanese business practice.

    • Zackasaur

Yeah, it sounds like a great system!

      • Fainaru Luna

Yup! I wasn’t too worried about the whole not using switching party memebers, because I would anyway’s be playing as Noctis the majority of the game.

The only thing that has me “irked” is Nomura not on board
directing, and like I said in my previous post, I wonder if him and Square had a falling out.

        • Budgiecat

so area strategy and character linking combos is not important to ya huh. Just button mash—no wait-hold down for awesome combo away..

          • Fainaru Luna

No, that very well important to me while playing a average jrpg, but that the thing this isn’t you’re average one it’s a arpg.

Never go under any assumptions as they say

            • Budgiecat

So I take it you never played

              Star Ocean
              tales of many games
              Dragon Age
              trinity: Souls of Zill O’ll

              • Fainaru Luna

                ^Somewhat correct

                • Budgiecat

                  So……like…..those are…action RPGs…..where you can……switch between characters…in….battle…

And FF type Zero HD….a game made by …this director…

                  • Fainaru Luna

yeah I understand that only played dragon age 1 on that list i watched a couple tales letsplay
Never played type-0, but look forward to getting the HD Port

                  • GuardianLion

To my knowledge, each character had very specific combat roles in those games?

Noctis being able to use multiple types of weapons and easily switching between them kinda throws a wrench in that simple setup.

If it’s as simple as liking one character over the other, then I understand your disappointment.

                    • Budgiecat

                      Not really no.

                      Just lazy development

                    • GuardianLion

                      Lazy?

Alright, I’ll give it to you

                  • Zackasaur

None of those games even approach this kind of refinement, though. lol

                    • Budgiecat

so 10 years in the making, ported over to a console 10x as powerful as the last and they couldnt do it

                    • Zackasaur

They could do it, and they found that it actually made the gameplay experience worse.

So they switched course and put resources into adding a lot more involvement to Noctis’s gameplay instead. And, as we all know, Noctis was always the primary playable character anyway.

                  • Kevadu

Dragon Age is not even remotely an action RPG…

                    • Fainaru Luna

buy budgie standards it probably is

                    • Budgiecat

what is it really? A medieval reality dating sim?

                    • Fainaru Luna

                      Seems that way

                      Edit: 2003

                    • Budgiecat

No? Sure felt actiony to me (console version) Dragon Age II? no? Dragon Age Inquisition?

                    • Kevadu

Then you are a terrible judge of what makes an action game.

Action games give you direct control over characters. If you press an attack button you attack, and whether you hit or not depends on what’s in range. In Dragon Age if you tell a character to attack they will move towards the enemy (without any additional inputs) and then attack once they’re in range. You’re issuing orders, not taking direct control.

Dodging and blocking and staples of just about any action game. There are absolutely no dodging or blocking mechanics in Dragon Age. There are spells and abilities that can boost stats, but aside from that you just stand there and trade hits.

You can pause the game at any time, issue orders, resume the game, and then watch your characters carry out those orders without any additional inputs.

Timing is an important part of most action games. Exactly when and how you hit an enemy matters. It does not matter at all in Dragon Age. Damage is determined entirely by under-the-hood dice rolls.

These things are all true even in the console version of the games. And yes, they’re still true in Dragon Age II. The changes in Dragon Age II were mostly superficial, the fundamentals of combat were the same.

Dragon Age is clearly based on the realtime w/ pause system seen in classics like Baldur’s Gate and Planescape: Torment. The fact that the camera can be focused on a particular character rather than a bird’s eye view doesn’t change that.

                    • Budgiecat

real time – aka action RPG.

With the added benefit of a pause system

So I’m still correct aaaaaand……you’re not

                    • Kevadu

Given that you clearly have no idea what an action RPG is, I suppose continuing this conversation would be pointless…

                    • Budgiecat

                      I’m so dumb

          • GuardianLion

Didn’t he say timing was important?

I suggest waiting for a trial run in your hands before shutting it out completely. Going in closed-minded can influence your enjoyment.

            • Budgiecat

you cant play as the other party members

              • GuardianLion

The only thing that keeps me from doing (from what I can see so far) is using that less-than-stellar-looking aim mechanic that we saw before. They have my thanks.

However, I might be missing something. How would being able to switch characters help the battle system?

                • Zackasaur

It wouldn’t… It would just restrict enemy design to require special switches (shoot the wings, hit him with the giant sword, only this guy has access to Cure, etc.). Meanwhile, it would take away resources from the development of the main playable character, who has the most interesting moveset and technology by far.

We talked about this a bit above, but I thought it should be added here as well. c:

                  • Budgiecat

                    nah cmon dude

                    • Zackasaur

Trust me, I was pretty interested in the old idea as well. Having different combat systems for different characters was an idea unmatched anywhere else in the entire game industry.

But it’s also a highly impractical one that can cause design and resource issues.

So I get it… And we all know that Noctis was the main playable character from the beginning anyway. The trailers even emphasised that.

                    • Budgiecat

So is Hawk in Dragon Age II

doesnt mean you can only use him/her though…

                • Budgiecat

Bring a Behemoth to your attention with Prompto from a safe distance via shotgun blast
                  He charges toward you.
flank him from the left hand side with a magic shot from Ignis.
He rushes toward him and Gladiolus appears from the back with a heavy swing taking out his rear legs
finished with an above final blow from Noctis, who had previously teleported

                  Budgie is a genius

                  • Fainaru Luna

The A.I can do all that too and probably in less the time amount Tabun

                    A.I is genius XD

                  • Zackasaur

They play-tested and found that it wasn’t really working out that way for players because there was so much to control simultaneously.

The idea is pretty, but it evidently failed play-testing. *shrug*

    • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

They kicked Nomura cause they wanted KH3 to step up development I think. They suck like that.

  • Bob Obb

    Trash

    • Zackasaur

      Flagged.

      • Calbury

Why flag his comment, it is a simple opinion. It doesn’t hurt anybody.

        • TheDevil

Cuz comments like that end up locking this thread.
Ya know, if you ain’t got nothing constructive to say, just hate in silence.

          • Calbury

I believe all opinions should be allowed equally, I can understand if something breaks out to flag those comments, but this comment alone isn’t saying anything that I feel would be deserving of being flagged.

            • Zackasaur

Are you unfamiliar with the concept of flamebait? It’s a typical trolling tactic on display here, and Zero has addressed the community about this in the past.

This comment produces nothing by strife and a worsened community.

              • Calbury

Yes, but that doesn’t necessarily have to be what this is, it is just a differing opinion, like mine. I don’t like it, and clearly he doesn’t either. If people get their panties in a bunch over it that is hardly his fault.

                • Seifer90

Zackasaur is the unnofficial janitor of Gematsu, if he doesn’t like a comment, he flags it.

                • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

I’ve been reading the comments in this discussion. Just like you and others have pointed out, there is a fine line moderators have to walk in this regard.

                  Fun, eh? xD

What should be considered spam? What should we deleted or removed? etc.

I typically reply to comments to begin with, if I feel the comment itself is going overboard, I will edit the comment with a warning. If it comes down to it, comments might be removed. That’s typically a last ditch effort. I will lock the comments in an article full of stuff that goes against our guidelines before I mass delete comments.

Personally, I tend to be quite lenient in regards to moderation here. I think everyone here is. With that said, it does hurt when it feels like people walk all over us for that.

Some websites approach moderation the more standard way. I’ve always been different in that regard. The way I approach moderation is unique I suppose. Some will agree with it, some won’t.

The overall goal is to better the community here. It’s something that we all have to work together to do. I appreciate users voicing feedback and posting opinions in this regard, because we are all on the same team.

Although I’ve said this before. I’ll say it again… The goal here is not to censor people. Ever.

It’s like I said in my reply above. If you don’t like something, or disagree with someone….

Either share a civil explanation as to why, or move on to the next article. Just like it says in the guidelines.

That’s not saying don’t post if you dislike something, or don’t reply if you disagree. It’s just saying be civil about it, follow the guidelines, and be respectful when posting.

I know people get emotional sometimes, but that doesn’t give anyone the greenlight to post offensive comments, troll comments, or flame comments.

I hope this post helps clear up any confusion. Thanks for reading.

                  • Calbury

I understand that moderation has to be a carefully thought out thing, and what not, and all that jazz. And I agree with the whole being respectful while still being able to have differing and sometimes more disdainful opinions, and as I said, it shouldn’t be a double standard, the same should go for posting comments in a light mood, because I have seen both sides being… err… less than personable.

                    • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

I suppose that’s the toughest part. When should I step in as a moderator? It’s not always easy to make that call.

                    • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

I think it’s always best to be a bit lax, closing things can just cause frustration to users( ones who like the comments or are against.)

Some times it’s best to just let things run their course.

                    • Calbury

Yah, I understand, I have been in the same position you are in several times. It really isn’t as black and white as some might think.

        • Zackasaur

          1. It’s trolling of the most blatant kind.

          2. It is literally a one-worded comment. The epitome of spam.

          3. We have seen previous threads on this site locked for comments like this. Precedent is heavy.

          4. It hurts the community stability and atmosphere, kills good discussion, and ultimately reduces the quality and appeal of the site for new and old members.

          • Calbury

I don’t think you can say it is trolling, especially if he makes no advances to reply to comments, or at least not in a troll-like or negative way.

I suppose that much is true…

As I mentioned before should this get out of hand then sure flagging would be appropriate but as it stands I see no need to flag it.

How? The only way it would do that is if it caused something to break out and if it doesn’t then there is no issue, and so far it seems like it hasn’t, and probably won’t.

            • Fainaru Luna

That guy always post stuff like that from time to time without even offering any articulated comment on this website.

              • Zackasaur

The fact that he isn’t yet banned is a mistake. I understand that there is a lot of leniency, but he’s well past his twentieth strike. It’s a consistent pattern of ill-intended behaviour.

Hopefully we won’t have to put up with it for long, because this site has a lot of better people hoping to have better conversations. which will in turn help the site to gain better new members who feel welcomed by the environment.

                • Calbury

I guess I am just not aware of this person’s past. This comment alone to me seems ill fitting of a flag, but that is probably just my ignorance on this poster as I had stated earlier.

                  • Zackasaur

Well, the comment alone is worth the flag, so that the user could receive a warning and some advice for future posts. The Community Guidelines and past administrative posts have been very explicit about why posts like “trash” will not be tolerated.

However, in this case, it is indeed a person with quite a record… So I think warnings are over and the users on the site are just waiting for a ban. :P

No worries in regards to not knowing him. It’s unfair to expect that of everyone.

But flags do not equal bans. They are meant to be a helpful tool.

                    • Calbury

Is that so? I see it simply as another opinion. *shrug* But people view the world differently.

*nod* Of course flags don’t equal bans, but if he is indeed deserving of a ban, and has had problems in the past then I am more accepting of the terms you are setting out. And I do apologize for any misgivings I have stated earlier. As I have said I am simply ignorant on this subject.

                    • Zackasaur

That’s okay~ Opinions are fine, but negative ones need to be constructive.

Otherwise, they only exist to piss off the fans who are reading the news and discussing it.

So if he had said, “I’m displeased with the direction of FFXV because…” and given a reasoned perspective, I would instead be able to respond to him with counterpoints, corrections, my own views, etc.

But there is nothing constructive to be done with “trash.” In that sense, his comment is the only real trash here. :P

                    • Calbury

Well positive ones should also be constructive otherwise that would be unfair bias, I mean as you said you could discuss and give counterpoints and stuff, so should a person with a negative opinion be able to discuss with a person with a positive opinion, obviously in a civilized manner, but yah.

                    • Zackasaur

Mmm, displays of excitement don’t hurt feelings, cause conflict, etc.

The difference is really that one isn’t a problem. “Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep Volume 2 announced for Vita” could make me comment with a “FUCK YESSSSS!” without problem. Whereas, if someone comes in and wants to ruin the day for fans with a comment like “trash,” they’re causing problems without offering anything constructive.

Constructive posts in either direction (positive or negative) are of course okay.

Basically, negativity has a higher standard to uphold because of the culture.

                    • Calbury

Eh I don’t like the idea of a double standard. As for BBSV2 that was supposed to be a thing, whatever happened to it?

                    • Anime10121

An opinion that is one word and unexplained used to spark/rile up the community is flamebait. Now if he would like to elaborate on his comment, it’d be a different story, but just dropping “trash” and then not saying anything else, is more than flag worthy :/

                    • Calbury

I suppose that is true. *shrug*

                • Budgiecat

I believe he’s still on Siliconera explain that phenomenon!

                  • Zackasaur

                    lolllll

The explanation can be done in one word: “Siliconera.”

              • Calbury

Is that so? Does he troll people though? I mean sure it doesn’t seem all that constructive but it is an opinion and he should be allowed to express it.

                • Zackasaur

                  It’s not a constructive opinion. It’s a troll post.

He has a long history of this behaviour.

While I will very heartily disagree with someone who wants to be negative about FFXV, I’m happy to have that discussion. Bob Obb is a troll with absolutely no intention of doing so.

This has absolutely nothing to do with restricting opinions. It’s about restricting posts that drag the community down.

                  • Calbury

I replied to your other post, I don’t know this person’s past, so I am just ignorant on the subject, if I did have some prior information I might be more agreeable to your situation. I am relatively new to the site, and don’t really get into relationships with others, I don’t know anything about anybody really.

                    • Zackasaur

And I won’t fault you for that! c: It would be asinine for me to expect new members to suddenly know everything about the climate.

However, you might want to at least review the Community Guidelines. This post on its own warrants the flag because it is not constructive and only acts as flamebait.

                    • Calbury

Climate? I am not sure you are using that word correctly.

                      I have skimmed the guidelines before, I just view the world differently it seems. >.<;

                    • Zackasaur

                      I’m using the following definition:

“the prevailing attitudes, standards, or environmental conditions of agroup, period, or place”

It’s possible that this usage isn’t common wherever you live or in the things you read, though. c: It’s especially useful to me, because I work in political philosophy. We might talk about something like a “climate of unrest,” for example.

                    • Calbury

Oooh. I learned something new today. ^^ Thank you.

                    • Zackasaur

                      I love that feeling! :D

I’m always happy to talk about video games and/or politics/philosophy. lulz

                    • Calbury

*nod* That the latter topics can be pretty heavy, but that is not to say, they aren’t interesting to talk about.

                    • Calbury

You mean like Aang or Korra? ;p I think Anime… whatever the numbers are is already using a Korra picture. Heheh. What avatar would I pick though? :o Also this discussion seems to be one that would be more fitting on the Open Forum.

                    • Budgiecat

                      pick something unique

                    • Calbury

That is a bit hard to do, it is as somebody has said, nothing in the world is unique anymore, we just use it differently, or something along those lines.

                    • LordKaiser

                      You change it on gravatar.com

                    • Calbury

No I know how to change it, and I hate Gravatar anyways. It was a quote and making a joke / inference to Budgiecat wanting me to have a unique avatar.

                    • Zackasaur

I’m not going to delete this. With that said, you could have done a much better job here. Which I’m sure you are aware of.

      http://gematsu.com/commenting-guidelines #1 and #2 apply here.

“Don’t like a certain game? Either share a civil explanation as to why, or move on to the next article.”

I don’t see any real explanation here or anything. That’s why folks like Zackasaur read this as spam. If you don’t have the time or patience to post something more, why post at all?

      • Zackasaur

I feel for you, here. xD

These FFXV posts seem to consistently get ~500 posts, and of course that draws in some nastiness and a lot of strong feelings.

But it’s also a huge chance for Gematsu to grow, as the FFXV coverage here has to be the best I’ve seen.

        • Fainaru Luna

Zackasaur are temporary mod when the mods are busy

          • Zackasaur

I used to run my own sites, forums, the KH Wiki, etc. I’m pretty used to moderation and some of the tough calls that come with it. :P

And, you know, as a personal fan of both Gematsu and FFXV, I’m getting pretty tired of the trolls and fanboys trying to ruin everyone’s fun. So I figure we should make it easy for the mods to find the bad eggs by flagging their comments. It can be hard to read through hundreds of comments, but some of us are doing it anyway just because we’re so invested in the article.

When you see similar things, I recommend you flag as well!

            • Fainaru Luna

Didn’t know you use to be a mod cool!
Aye, will do that to keep the comment civilized as possible.

              • Zackasaur

Yep~ I used to go by a few different names around the internet, including DarthXehanort. lol

I’m Darth_Xehanort on the PSN if you want to add me~ Just let me know who you are. c:

I really like this site (have been around since the old ScrawlFX days, if you’re familiar) and am pretty excited about SE’s new projects, so I just don’t feel like we should have to tolerate this kind of trolling in a place that should be a safe discussion haven.

And I know that back when I used to own, admin, and mod online communities, it was really helpful when people reported objectionable content.

EDIT: I’m a little more direct/mean than I used to be, but that’s because I’m not a mod. I change my tact a little when I’m the one who is actually using the enforcement tools. :P

                • Fainaru Luna

So you’re part of the old guard thats neat, I haven’t been around here that long, but I found this site summer 2012, been lurking until spring 2013 when I finally made disqus account to comment.

Yeah I’ll add you on psn thanks!

                    Great!

        • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

I love to read the opinions and emotional responses. I just get upset when those replies clash with our guidelines.

          • Zackasaur

Yeah, I literally read every single post on these articles… And I don’t REALLY have the time to justify that lately. But I can’t help myself. xD

It’s just too fun to get involved in all of this news after so many years of anticipation despite SE’s executive mishandling.

But, like I said, all of that energy also brings in some problems. I think it might be getting better with each major post, though.

  • GuardianLion

    *checks gut
well, I don’t feel that same sinking feeling I had when I saw FFXIII’s gameplay.
Okay Square, I’ll give FFXV a fair shake. I mean, I haven’t seen anything that’ll get on my nerves so far.
After all, I’m stuck as Sora all game in KH, my made up character all game in other RPGs, and I usually stick with the most diverse fighter anyway.

    Let’s see what you’ve got.

    • Zackasaur

Yeah, one problem with the old system is that Noctis was always by far the most interesting character to control. The others were more like side characters to control for specific actions…

And it just wasn’t worth using finite resources and altering enemy design around that concept.

Instead using all of that stuff to make the core gameplay experience better sounds smart.

      • GuardianLion

        Agreed.

Noctis uses every weapon type they do (minus gun-toting blonde friend), and he has warping powers to add spice to the whole thing. Does glasses-friend use his fists? If so, then there’s another type Noctis doesn’t use, but it’s still close-quarters so it doesn’t make much of a difference.

The Tales of series has character switching, but I only ever use the default main character anyway. No switching isn’t an issue for me.

        • Zackasaur

Tales switching is definitely a different beast, since all characters control basically the same way. It’s just a variation on turn-based character switching, where you switch for specific skills, assets, etc.

FFXV is much more “new” in that regard and can’t really be compared.

Even in the Tales system, which is more open to the idea since every character is a variation on the same functions, there is usually a character or two who has the obvious advantages of being the “main.” For example, we see that in Tales of Xillia 2, where we have the main character’s ability to switch weapons. Fusion capabilities present the same dilemma for the upcoming Zestiria.

          • GuardianLion

That’s kind of my point. Just because I had the option didn’t mean it was a necessary feature. I had the choice, but that choice is made pointless by being able to give general orders (telling healers to focus on healing for example) and linked arts.

TOX2 made it even more pointless because Ludger could use slashing weapons, bashing weapons, and ranged weapons. He was a walking armory, so I just used him the whole time.

If FFXV’s characters behaved SIGNIFICANTLY different from one another, then I could see the value of a switch system. Otherwise, it’s choice for choice’s sake and that sounds like a wasted effort to me.

            • Zackasaur

Tales mostly needs it (especially on higher difficulties) because the AI is very important (for things like healing), yet is super dumb and unreliable. xD

I usually have the most fun playing Tales on easier settings where I can just give commands and rely “enough” on their roles to get by, except in emergencies where I need to switch.

              • GuardianLion

                I do the same :)
Might be why I see it as pointless, I admit.

                • Zackasaur

I would love to see a Tales game where they massively improve the combat system around a main character and make up for the lack of switching with improved AI and combo moves.

But for now, they still aren’t advanced enough to do either of those things. xD

At least the games are very fun. c: They’re the Saturday morning cartoons of JRPGs.

                  • GuardianLion

“They’re the Saturday morning cartoons of JRPGs”
^how I will explain Tales to those who know nothing of it from this day forward XD

                  • Budgiecat

You seriously want RPGs to have only one character control like 99% of WRPG’s?

Might as well not be RPGs then

                    Noctis May Cry

                    • Zackasaur

Character switching is the defining aspect that makes a game an RPG for you?

                      Srsly?

                    • Budgiecat

Did I say it was? No.

However, controlling a party IS one of the main identifiers of RPG’s that you dont really find in other genres:

                      Lessee:

                      Racing games? Nope
                      Puzzle games? nope
                      2D/3D platformers?Nope
Action games? barely (maybe W101, NLKS & Pikmin)
Horror? Only really in mission sections
                      Adventure? barely
                      FPS? Nope
                      tPS? Nope

                      Only Sports and strategy really..

So once you start stripping characteristics away one by one, you’re left with ‘an action adv with rpg elements’, aka watered down, aka casualized

                    • Zackasaur

There are a few problems with this typography, so I’ll make my points in a list so that it’s easier to keep them separate. It helps me to write that way. :P

-“Controlling a party” is an interesting choice of words, because it accounts for a lot of things, like giving commands to party members while staying in direct control of the main character. Some RPGs have party control (traditional turn-based games, SRPGs), some have character switching (Pokemon), some have character switching w/ AI (Tales), some have a central character with influence over AI allies (KH), some have no party at all (The Elder Scrolls), some have co-op (Tales), some rely on a party of friends (MMORPGs), etc. This variation is important, because FFXV clearly features a party that you will influence and use for co-op moves, at minimum. So FFXV already has a variation of “party control” that is more intensive than other acknowledged RPGs, some of which don’t have parties at all. Perhaps it could be considered a tradition (and thus FFXV is part of said tradition), but it’s clearly one that has been repeatedly broken without loss of the RPG label.

-So, do other genres have parties? Well, you acknowledged the following already: They have shown up in adventure, horror, and action to some degree, and quite heavily in sports and strategy. But I’ve used party controls in first-person and third-person shooters, so we have to add those. SOCOM especially comes to mind, but there are others. Hell, I commanded an AI ally and told another which targets to snipe in single-player Killzone: Shadow Fall pretty recently. Racing games and puzzle games have a bit of a hard time fitting in at all, since they don’t usually have “characters.” They hardly belong on the list at all, although some puzzle-centric games have featured parties. And I guess Mario Kart: Double Dash is a thing? Like I said, though, they barely belong on the list at all. That leaves… 2D/3D platformers? I’ve had parties of characters in those as well. Of course, they don’t work like RPG parties, since the games are different genres. That’s a key point, really. Parties are just an abstract that can fit into -any- game, but have to bend to the game’s rules. As a result, parties in RPGs behave in ways that are different from parties in platformers.

-So we have already concluded that FFXV is very obviously an RPG and that parties are not a defining characteristic of RPGs. Furthermore, FFXV is in fact an RPG that makes use of party mechanics, so this discussion doesn’t matter that much in the first place. xD Character switching is actually sort of a “back of the box” idea within FFXV’s own subgenre, which is action RPGs. Many games in this subgenre lack parties entirely, and many (most?) that do have them don’t have character switching.

-So what about the last bit of your comment? It just feels like an attack on how action RPGs work as a whole. FFXV is bloated with RPG aspects. Party controls, gear, combo customisation, exploration, dungeons, epic and focused narrative, fighting a variety of monsters, stats-based gameplay, leveling mechanics, etc. And the game exists in dedication to these aspects more than action games with RPG elements do (like, say, God of War or Devil May Cry). It’s certainly not a watered down game, because that would basically make most of its competition water… Much of it evaporated entirely. lol But let’s move past that….

-So what defines an RPG? I mean, it’s obviously a genre with a pretty horrible name. The name made sense in the pen-and-paper days, but narrative-driven games have really changed that entirely. Really, it seems to be a matter of the elements a game emphasises, since genres are otherwise obscured. Assassin’s Creed, God of War, Bayonetta, Call of Duty, etc. all have RPG elements. But we don’t call them RPGs, because they are less stat-emphatic, less dedicated to a sweeping narrative, missing in RPG tropes like monsters, etc. At this point, it’s basically a pitch at who you most want to play your game. “RPG” is mostly a term useful to people who enjoy these aspects in their games. This is more true than ever with the rise of action RPGs that take the strengths of old RPGs and meld them with the strengths of action games.

-Casualised? This implies that RPGs are somehow the most hardcore genre. I’m not sure that’s fair, especially in Japan. Besides, that word is just playing with fire and has vague meaning at best at this ponit.

Okay, that’s the condensed version. >.>

                    • Budgiecat

                      Hey

All I know is in mainline FF games, exclusing the 2 MMO’s which I never felt should of been awarded a mainline number, you play as a party of characters, and even the ones where you didnt have full control(FF XIII), you had some kind of control of each character some time in the game.

And yeah, this game is obviously being casualised for more mainstream with the inclusion of auto combo.

I guess its just disappointing to hear once again from S-E “We tried and couldn’t do it”, especially on a game taken so long (which is still only at 55%) and moved to a platform ten times more powerful than the last, on a more powerful engine.

                      Not happy

                    • Zackasaur

So Type-0 is super casual? lol But people always seem to complain that it was too hard…

XV uses a more complex version of Type-0’s combo system.

And it’s not a matter of “couldn’t do it.” It’s a matter of “did it, and it wasn’t as fun as a game based around Noctis is.” *shrug*

                    • Budgiecat

Type-0 is a spin off not a main. Also where did I state it was super casual? wha?

For FF XV. gone is the feeling of “wow cant wait to see what Ignis, Prompto, Gladiolus play like”

Now its more KH than FF.

Also, you’re putting words in tabata’s mouth.
that is not what he said.

            • Budgiecat

              Why deny people of choice???

              • Bonn Bo

Because some people apparently feel it adds “more depth” to the game and having choices is redundant…

          • LordKaiser

Um but the techniques worked different as many characters had to charge spells and casting takes time so you have to use the characters different on the field. Also many tales games allow multiplayer even thought most people play alone. Also some artes needs you to hold a button etc. etc.

            • GuardianLion

Never had to touch them because the AI handled it fine.

Full disclosure: I didn’t play on balls-to-the-walls hard mode.

              • AdamBoy64

I remember in Symphonia the battle AI had its issues, but haven’t noticed it in any recent Tales games.

Vesperia (even on the hardest setting), the character AI is very good.

          • KingNigma

By everyone in Tales controlling “basically the same way” you mean like everyone has a hit button, cast/tech button etc right?

            • Zackasaur

              Yes.

Basically, the core for one character can be translated to the next, with only the moves themselves changing significantly.

Whereas, Versus XIII had something different in mind. When switching to our gun user, the game would become a full third-person shooter. That’s a pretty interesting idea, but it’s incredibly difficult to do and creates a lot of unique balancing challenges.

              • Budgiecat

Didnt Eternal Sonata have varying gameplay mechanics?

I mean God damn, this game has been 10 years in the making; I think you keep overlooking that and assuming the beta was ‘broken’ when it really was more of Wada wanting it to be on PS4; and when he threw tabata on there as codirector, obviously idea changes will butt heads, and some heads will roll

I mean look what happened to FF XII…

          • Budgiecat

You’re making it seem more complex than it is and taking dev word for face value without being impartial.

I’m sure you remember toriyama saying HD townz are hard and couldnt be done, only to turn around and make HD townz in the sequels lol.

Also we have found evidence of tabata not keeping his stories straight anyway :P

            • Zackasaur

To be fair to Toriyama… XIII-2 looked uglier than XIII, and then LR looked even uglier. xD That engine was a slow chore for developers and not the best at handling high detail in large places.

Tabata, on the other hand, clearly isn’t very good at interviews and might have better luck posting through something like blogs. It’s not an uncommon problem to have, but it’s going to be a pain in the neck now that he is one of the biggest figures in gaming.

            • Pekola

I know he doesn’t say the exact same thing in each interview but it usually means the same thing.

I’ve read different reports where it says that the game is 50-60% percent complete. Then others say 55%.

Then there’s also statements which sound similar but are different. Saying different things doesn’t mean both are thruth or lies.

ALSO the translating is a thing. Far it be from me to defend a dev if he’s being sneaky, but I have to invoke Occam’s razor here.

              • Budgiecat

He said type Zero HD began early 2012

then he said it began fall of 2013

                lol

                • Pekola

Remember that he said he’s old multiple times.

Lol. What a guy. But If you can provide sources that’d be great.

                  • Budgiecat

It would take some effort on my part I’m not too motivated to do unless maybe you can give me some puff puff

        • LordKaiser

Noctis used every weapon but he didn’t had their mastery. The 1rst person view for example was exclusive to the blond guy, so it had a sense of strategy.

  • http://lukalovesgames.blogspot.de/ Alkaid

Well that at least takes some edge off the shocking revelations about this game. Very informative, so thank you for bringing it up here. ^^

The questions here really surprised me, they were so thoughtful.
Seldomly we witness Q&As like this. It seems that SE or rather
Tabata downright managed to completely confuse even the japanese fans
with the last few interviews. Which also further explains the weird meme
thing we’ve come to love on twitter. xD

Dunno if it’ll be enjoyable to play as Noctis all the time, since many people tend to go for “side-characters”. Loved to run around with Edea in Bravely (all the time), Balthier in XII or even the rare moments in th the other FF games where we could briefly play as the cool characters like Cid in VII.
The only main character I wholeheartedly loved was Zidane. xD

The evasion/battle system also sounds a little more interesting, if it isn’t summed up in “you only need to press a button” to be super cool. This seemed to be a major concerne everywhere and it’s good that they adressed it so firmly in the interview. Now it only comes down to how it’ll all play out in the end.

    • Zackasaur

If anything, this makes evasion tougher than it is in most action games and action RPGs!

Often, I find myself repeatedly dodge rolling to evade flurries of attacks. In FFXV, I’m going to have to think of dodging as a resource to be used effectively… Even to be used as part of a string of attacks. Pretty damn interesting.

      • http://lukalovesgames.blogspot.de/ Alkaid

Well let’s see how much of MP really goes off of the gauge in the final version first. But you’re right especially western games tend to go “dodge” for being near invincible and sadly so did KH BbS.

Gotta admit I love games like Tales of though.

In the newer installments it’s completely optional to activate a skill that brings your dodging cost to zero “AC”/”CC”. So the players are able to chose for themselves IF they want to make the game deliberately difficult or not.
Hopefully SE will chose to include higher difficulties as well, strategic positioning and efficiently evading attacks to reduce MP costs does indeed sound interesting.

      • Yuntu

I hate to bring this comparison but it should feel just little bit like your stamina management in Dark Souls – ’cause that’s basically the same system. Though it shouldn’t drain that much MP, you still should be able to fire off some casts atleast.

        • Zackasaur

Yeah, that’s probably the closest analogy we can make right now. A fair point.

There are definitely some differences, of course. But that kind of stamina management is at the core.

      • aromero36

I think this adds a more realistic kind of feeling to the game. Like in Type-0 where you can actually die in 1 hit and you have to take in consideration every move you make.

This sometimes make battles even more exciting and adds a certain suspense feeling in boss battles where you feel like you really want to kill the bastard but its not that easy and he can also kill your partners in 1 hit hahahahaha

    • Budgiecat

We still dunno if Luna is Stella, if airships are gone, if commandeering enemy mecha is gone, if other vehicles besides Noctis Bugatti can be used, Cor Leonis fate, and if Zackasaur will ever yield to defeat in the long debate here with the magnificent Budgie…

  • Hexodious

I thought Final Fantasy was already taken to the “casual” side? Well, the last few FF games were beach-walking easy for me. *Shrugs*

    • Yuntu

Yeah FF was never really hard. Except things like Penance or such.

      • rickscythe

        Penance is hard?
I thought you could kill him in one hit with Yojimbo using Zanmato… Now i don’t know this anymore :P

        • Yuntu

Who uses Yojimbo against Penance? I fight him for like 45min and it was fun.

          • rickscythe

I’m not talking about being fun, I’m talking about Penance being easy to beat. In fact, even without Yojimbo you can beat him easily as long as you know what you’re doing. (After all, I beat Penance in the hard way first and learned about Yojimbo from a friend afterwards)
But if you like to fight a boss for 45 min, sure why not. Guess, knowing you can beat a supposed super hard boss in one hit really takes the fun off.

            • Yuntu

Penance was just an example – I could also say Ozma from FF9.
And for the OHK: Certain combinations or spells ( like summoning Yojimbo ) always will break the game.
That’s why I’m confused – every FF is kinda easy and they want to do the same with this one, yet everyone ( or many ) is freaking out about it. This isn’t Versus XIII anymore, it’s XV. That means it gets treated in another way then a spin-off would be treated.

  • Bonn Bo

So Noctis IS the only playable huh, the MP cost for dodging is kind of good news, but Noctis is the only playable character =/

    • aromero36

this kind of sets the game in a more KH side, where you cant´s switch between playable characters and not like FF where you could switch freely. Might as weel be interesting to play a FF with a Kh feeling like FFXV seems to be, don´t you think? Although i would have wanted to play as the other cahracters too, they look really badass

      • Bonn Bo

Of all the things to want to have from KH, it’s the single playable character aspect. I think the ideal scenario would’ve been KH game play with FF cast and playable characters

        • aromero36

          Truth has been spoken people!

  • Articuno76

    Really liking the weapon setup. You can have one weapon and what it will do will change depending on whether you use it as a combo weapon, counter weapon, main weapon etc;

It moves focus away from purely being an action game to also highlighting battle prep/RPG’ing.

    • Zackasaur

Yeah, I think it’s an amazing idea. I look forward to experimenting with different setups!

  • NessWonderSprite

The gameplay looks so shallow and raw, I have a feeling it will be the downfall of the game. The game already has too much hype which it will not be able to live up to but the gameplay being like this is the wrong direction which they cannot fix now

    • Seifer90

At the end of the day it won’t matter, the Square Enix fanboys will buy it anyway.

      • aromero36

I would actaually buy it, but even if the gameplay sucks I really want to know about the story of the game, it seems really interesting! Or maybe i´ll wait for somebody to buy it and lend it to me later hahahaha that way i don´t waste my money. You should try that option hahahahaha

      • Pekola

I’ll buy 50 copies myself. 48 of those I will rub all over my body. Sensually.

The other two will go to my shelf ;3

        • Zackasaur

          Room for one more? c;

    • aromero36

just remember the game is roughly more than 50% complete, hopefully they fix the flaws you mention because they still have quite a lot of time

      • NessWonderSprite

It took them 10 years just to get to this point lol. Time, is not a factor.

  • Articuno76

My biggest takeaway from all of this is just how open and transparent the devs are willing to be with their fans. That and the fact that they are looking at ways to actively address/pool feedback from their customers.

It’s a pretty radical shift for SE and I hope it does indeed continue.

    • Seifer90

Well, considering that the game has been in the darkness for several years, the least they can do is to be open and transparent with their fans.

    • Zackasaur

It’s definitely a pretty fantastic shift in their corporate structure.

  • Martian Wong

Why is the video is so blurry even for 720p. Does anyone have a 1080p version of it?

    • Zackasaur

Unfortunately, it was just a live stream.

Hopefully they give us direct-feed footage, but sometimes that doesn’t happen.

Mind, we already knows that it’s gorgeous based on TGS direct feed footage, so it’s not too hard for me to use my imagination here.

  • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

Some pretty interesting comments in here. I’ll chime in on some parts, but I sorta already voiced my opinions in previous articles. What I said there (My opinion) hasn’t changed much. In fact, I don’t think it will until I get my hands on the demo.

I think another reason this situation surrounding FFXV has been created is time. What I mean is, this huge development cycle, the secrecy, when a game is in development for so long, the hype slowly builds over years.

Square-Enix failed to share information properly for years, thus, folks got hyped up and from what little info was out there, started to imagine what the game would be like. With all those years of basically nothing, it’s easy to create what you think the game will/should be in your mind.

Now that the information is finally coming out. Lots of people are not satisfied with the end result. I think this is fairly typical with long projects though. It’s just not possible to please everyone.

I’m not saying those who are not impressed are wrong. I think it’s just typical behavior, especially in video games.

I know, the game isn’t out, people haven’t played it yet. Most fans of video games judge before they play though, or so I’ve found.

While that isn’t really my style, I understand why people do that. Just like I understand why people are upset. Years ago, I made several posts criticizing SE in regards to secrecy. It’s fine to be silent to a point, with this title they went wayyyy past that point I’m referring to.

This is what happens when you fail to give the fans any real concrete updates on a project for years. I’m not talking about the occasional interview in famitsu that has like one sentence with new information.

This is also what happens when you announce a project way too early. Could this finally be the wake up call SE needs in this regard? Stop announcing projects years before they are even close to coming out.

I’ll give credit where credit is due, Square-Enix has gotten better at this… somewhat. They have started to share more, which is a good thing. Communicating with the fans is something everyone should be doing in this age of gaming.

They haven’t gotten much better at getting games out faster, or announcing games closer to release date. They still need to improve here.

I’ll finish this by saying I feel for Tabata. He was asked to take over such a big project like this. I also feel for Nomura, it seems like he was told to go focus on Kingdom Hearts. It’s a shame that this game has had such a troubled development cycle. With that said, hopefully those times are behind us. It seems like Square-Enix is in a much better position in regards to tech and game engines, which has plagued the company for years now. I wouldn’t be surprised if the technical blunders and engine failures cost them more than the failed launch of FFXIV.

I think better times are ahead. I’m going to wait and play the demo. Rest assured, if I don’t like it. If lots of people don’t like it. We can share our opinions online and know that Square-Enix is at least listening now. That’s already an improvement in my eyes.

    • Budgiecat

      Budgie is still upset

      • Djkarl Pierre

your still upset even after I gave you my money to roll in?

        • Budgiecat

I dun remember you doing that….

          anyways…..yeah : (

          Here’s your money back…… : (

      • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

        Not liking the combat?

Im in the same boat, i need more clarification

Also, I want those character switches with different gameplay..

  • rickscythe

Looking at how things are… I wish this to be how it was when I was a kid, not having a computer with internet to look up for news on the game (or not even knowing that there was a game in development), buying few games on the blind and enjyoing the hell out of them.
I guess it was more fun back then…

**I wish this was turn-based too**

    :p

    • Zackasaur

-Partially agree on missing that surprise when I accidentally bought a good game… Nowadays, I buy games like FFXV knowing they are great. It’s really fun to be so involved and know an obnoxious amount about the game industry, but it was also really fun to just be surprised by everything I played.

-Disagree on the turn-based thing. I’d rather stick to Bravely for that and see FF pushing new ground like this.

      • rickscythe

“Nowadays, I buy games like FFXV knowing they are great.”

That’s the key point in what I said up there. There’s simply no way to know that a game will be good by what they show you without a fully description of the game mechanics (they only gave us how the battle looks like and some “nice” parts of the game that will impress people at the time) and how rich in terms of exploration, diversity in items, unusual and curious things, etc (not touching the story, i don’t like spoilers :p).
In my way of seeing things, fragmented information just as the way they were giving us till now just gave room for people to fill the blanks with whatever they wanted and idealized a game of their own. This is a bad turn of events since different people will fill with different things and the resulting game will certainly not be any of that and end up pleasing only a few out of the many gamers who’s going to get the game.
Of course the game could come out and everyone like it, which is the best for FF series, and I really hope it do so. But tension only keeps rising with every piece of information Tabata releases…

I sincerely expect it to be a good game. I’m saving money to buy a PS4 for that, dammit. ;-)

Also, in the turn-based thing I was trolling :p

        • Zackasaur

          @trolling: Oh, okay. XD

As for FFXV, given what we’ve seen/read, my knowledge of the developers, etc., I really have no doubts that I’m going to love it.

It is literally impossible for any one FF game to please every single fan’s deepest desires, but FFXV is looking wonderful and pretty much perfectly fits -my- deepest desires for a FF game. c:

My PS4 is ready~ Good luck with your savings! Do you think you’ll have one by the time Type-0 HD is out?

          • rickscythe

Nah… unfortunately it’ll take more time to get the money for PS4… I wish i had it around for Type-0 but it can’t be helped… I had a good amount of money but then my PS3 gone and bricked beyond repair out of nowhere and I had to buy another one with the money I had (I’m playing some games on it right now…)

But I’ll be sure to play Type-0 when I get mine… I got to play the japanese version a little bit on psp when it released and found it pretty good… I guess it will be much better on PS4^^

            • Zackasaur

Yeah, I loved what I played of Type-0 on PSP! But I avoid playing games in Japanese, so I stopped playing and stayed committed to the fight for localisation. And we won~

Sorry to hear about your situation! At least the PS3 remains a kickass console, though. I’m sure you’ll like your PS4 and Type-0 HD when the time comes. c:

              And you can feel free to add Darth_Xehanort. c;

              • rickscythe

                Oh, okay!^^
I’ll add you there when I get home on saturday. :)

                • Zackasaur

                  Great. c:

  • Shippoyasha

Eh. No need to get all so up in arms over this game. If you want a more oldschool type of Final Fantasy game, there’s oodles of it out there. FF games have always radically changed their status quo even to a point of doing too much too fast with haphazard combat balance or storytelling. But one thing I do have to give credit is that they at least are trying new things. Again, even when that comes at a cost of them doing things without properly thinking it through better.

    • Budgiecat

      nothing new here

    • ShinGundam

I don’t care about old ATB, It is not like older games were kings of strategic gameplay and execution but I need my character switch back.

      • Budgiecat

“I’m sure glad I can’t play as these awesome characters I’ve grown to know through +40 hours of gameplay!” – said no sane person ever :P

        • vertical09

I think one of the reasons I’m not all up in arms about the character switch thing is….I don’t really care for any of them.
Like, even Noctis to an extent. It might be their designs, but they feel…. uninteresting.

I know this will most likely be something that’ll change with time and getting to know them, but for now…eh.

That being said still looking forward to the game~

          • Budgiecat

you dont even know them yet.

            • vertical09

I know. Which is why I said:

“I know this will most likely be something that’ll change with time and getting to know them”

Going off their design and what little we know of their personality.

              • Budgiecat

                prejudging

                • vertical09

I can be rather shallow ^^

                  • Budgiecat

                    *adds water*

                    Now you are 2deep

        • osa

Then ask Nomura why he made Noctis one man army:)

In a bit more standard FF switching characters would be interesting, sure.
          But here?
What are you going to do? Switch to Prompto once just to see Noctis teleporting around with his cool shield of sparkly swords killing everything in sight with his arsenal of weapons…while you go plop, plop, plop with your pistol.

Face it folks, the game was never designed around party combat system.

People wanted crazy action combat? Well, you received action combat! Maybe it’s not crazy action combat but it’s action alright.
Now we all have to give up something for it.

          • Budgiecat

the cast might as well not be in the game then save for story interaction.

the joy for many FF fans and many JRPGS is getting to know AND play as each member in the party that you either meet initially or along the way of your adventure.

Now IF indeed Nomura wanted to make an action game where you have a main character you only control with a plethora of solo moves and owning abilities and A.I. assists. he already had a series for that: Kingdom Hearts.

            this is Final Fantasy.

        • Anarcki

I actually had the conversation with a friend about not being able to switch characters in XV. We came to the conclusion that it wouldn’t make much sense, think about it in every other FF characters had their own stories separate from the main character, if the main character didn’t exist they would still have their own stories to follow as opposed to XV where if Noctis and his family didn’t exist, his party would just be a bunch of normal guys who probably would never have met each other. So look at it like this Noctis party is literally support to him, they help fuel his story, their lives are tied to his story. So I don’t personally feel that it would make much sense to have “support” be playable.

          • Solomon_Kano

That’s actually an interesting way to look at it.

By all appearances, contrary to the tradition of FF’s past, Noctis isn’t gathering his party. This isn’t a band of strangers. This is a group of people together from the start. With all of them being part of what is presumably his story — and more than that, his family of sorts — from even before we come into the picture as the audience, it makes sense. I don’t think it’s going to make people want other playable characters any less though, especially after being teased with the concept in older footage (and series history).

          • Budgiecat

sorry not convinced. Gameplay > story

            • Anarcki

You and I play RPG’s for completely different reasons

              • Budgiecat

                What I said was fact

If the game doesnt work doesnt matter how good the story is.

It’d be like a car that doesn’t run but has a nice story on how you first acquired it, but you need said car to drive your pregnant wife to the hospital; visa vi: car is useless :P

                • Anarcki

You do realize an RPG is an interactive story. The main focus of an RPG is a story, if an RPG’s story sucks then it’ll be a failure of a game

                  • Budgiecat

                    no

    • Zackasaur

Yeah, I love that the FF franchise exists as the frontrunner for the genre as a whole. They’re always trying to push ground, and as a result, it’s one of the only franchises that can.

  • EspadaKiller

That gameplay video looks good. I’m liking the battle system, always a fan of fast paced battles like KH or from action games.

    • Zackasaur

Yeah, my favourite games work in this manner. c:

    • aromero36

wait for Type-0, you´ll definetely love it if you enjoy fast paced games (but prepare for grinding and a lot of “How the hell did that mother fu**** killed me in 1 hit”) I played the japanese version and believe when I tell you that having 14 unique characters with different gameplay style is quite a lot of fun! Also costumes are the best thing SE could have included in Type-0 and the phrase that suits the costumes in type-0 the best is: “masjestic as fu** bit**”. The story will make you cry like a little girl at a One direction concert, it is full of emotions and “I want to kill that dude so freaking bad” times

      • EspadaKiller

The story sounds like a rollercoaster ride. I tried the PSP version 2 years ago but stopped playing right at the start when the academy was attacked. Was busy with my exams and after my exams I didn’t have the motivation to play back. Looks like I have no excuse for passing up the game this time!

        • aromero36

You just don´t know what you missed hahahaha. Now i´ll recomend you to wait for the HD version, so you have a better experience than the psp version can offer. Just one thing: you will never be the same person once you finish this game!

  • aromero36

Tabata actually seems like a really cool guy, I´m having great expectations of FF XV with him on the lead. Surely Nomura could have been a great director but this could be seen as a new FF experience hence to the fact of Nomura not being the director anymore(i´m not saying he is bad at it, Nomura still rocks the FF games). I love the fact that they take fan feedback in consideration, for example Nomura knows that fans hae been waiting for KH 3 for a reallyyyyy long time so I appreciate the fact that he made it his priority. This might show how SE is a really efficient company due to the fact that they are developing two main titles at the same time and they know how to distribute the work in a way that projects still continue at a fast pace. SE will surely delight us next year!

    • osa

I remember reading somewhere SE always worked on 2 FF games at the same time and at one point 3. That was up to XIII. Maybe they’ll soon regain some of that efficiency back:)

      • Zackasaur

No doubt, SE have plenty of major projects going on at once. Off the top of my had, I can imagine…

        Huge SE Japan projects:
        FFXV
        KHIII
        FFXIV expansions/updates
FFXVI (they’re always working ahead on conceptual design; both Ito’s team and the FFXIII team are a mystery right now)
        Dragon Quest XI

        Moderate SE Japan projects:
        Bravely Second
        Dragon Quest Heroes
        Stuff I’m forgetting… >_>

        Smaller SE Japan projects:
        Type-0 HD
KH: Dream Drop Distance HD (wishful thinking? c;)
        FF Agito+
        Dragon Quest X maintenance
        Mobile games and mobile/PC ports
        Stuff I’m forgetting. :P

        SE in the west:
Rise of the Tomb Raider (waiting for PS4 version :P)
        Deus Ex sequel
        Hitman sequel
        loltriadwars
Probably an actual new Sleeping Dogs
        Mobile stuff
        And more :P

        • aromero36

that is actually a really accurate list hahahahaha, I would defenitely love to see Dream drop distance as a HD reamake(lests hope its real) since its is the only KH i have not played. It would be cool to work at SE even if I´m the coffee guy(I think they´ll actually include me in the credits). This sure means my wallet will cry next year, poor wallet-kun

          • Zackasaur

Yeah, SE are definitely going to be punishing some wallets. xD And it would be a pretty amazing place to work.

As for Dream Drop Distance, it’s completely amazing. You need to play it! The plot alone demands it, but you’ll also be stunned by how fun FlowMotion is. Movement in every other game feels weak by comparison, now.

            • aromero36

I played the demo at a friend´s house when it came out, and I was like: “I´ll take good care of your 3DS, don´t worry”. Just so you know, he didn´t give me his 3DS =(. I bought a Vita instead, and I´ll be glad I did if Drop distance comes out in HD for PS3

              • Zackasaur

Vita is definitely my preferred hardware, but my 3DS is precious to me primarily because of Dream Drop Distance and secondarily because of Bravely Default. x3

                • aromero36

I want to play Bravely Default so badly, the colectors edition seemed really cool because of the figure, but when I looked closer the figure is not that well made. So i´ll save for a 3ds and the normal copy of the game. I havent´s played the game but Agnes captivated me the moment I first saw her concept art, she seems like a really nostalgic and mysterious charcater! It looks like an incredible adventure for a handheld like the 3DS!

                  • Zackasaur

I’m in the US, so my Collector’s Edition was inexpensive and didn’t have the figure at all. But, yeah, I don’t always trust Nintendo with things like fancy limited editions. :P

Agnes is great, and the concept art for the series has always been stunning.

Indeed, the game itself is great as well! I would totally recommend a 3DS if you can ever acquire one. I’m a huge Vita fan, as I said, but I think the 3DS is also worth owning. I would immediately recommend KH: Dream Drop Distance, Bravely Default, Fire Emblem Awakening, and Theatrhythm FF: Curtain Call (if you’re down for a rhythm game).

        • Bart Fatima

Good job with the list. SE future will see a lot of green.

          • Zackasaur

            Thanks. c:

        • Kenny ケニー

Nice list but you forget this one XD

          Huge SE Japan projects:

          DQ X expansions/updates

          • Zackasaur

Ahhhhh, true! Except, I’d list that one as moderate. I’m pretty sure it has a lot less subscribers than FFXIV does.

  • Bart Fatima

That kinda hit home a lil bit about not switching characters. Was kinda looking forward to playing with the others. But however, I am excited to see changes in XV. XIII had changes but the game failed to appeal and the storyline sucked. XV has a story that will appeal, I am loving the boy band road trip approach. It will be something we all know of but never reallyeperience in a actual game. Should be fun I wish Tabata all the best.

    • aromero36

Grand theft auto + Final Fantasy = grand theft fantasy XV. If you follow this formula then Final Fantasy XV = Game of the year. You get to experience the excitement of the FF battles and the free roam (roadtrip) experience of GTA. The comments of the blonde guy when they are driving are hilarious (I hope there´s a lot of those in the game). If you ever wanted to drive a Bugatti in a FF game, then this game is for you my friend. Classy as fu**!

      • Bart Fatima

Right!!!! It will be history in the making!!!

  • Mozendo

Really glad Tabata took over he seems like a really cool guy and love how he’s been talking about the game recently which is something Nomura would have never done.

  • Zazon Zenzy

Auto Evasion costs MP… Now people can’t complaint about it.

    • notcarolkaye

Oh, I’d really like to believe that, but I don’t.

    • Zackasaur

“People” will complain no matter how fantastic the game is.

And they will only do it as a reflection of emptiness in their own hearts as they attempt to make others’ days worse for the hell of it.

But at least anyone who was previously confused about bad interviews and translations can join the excitement. c:

  • Mikail

So the “casual” thing is just some delusion made by some haters of this games , no mater how good this games there will be hater around to spread some negativity, SE or any other studio will never satisfied a lot of costumer, like i said before it’s better to keep your hype meter and don’t expect to much. Seeing this game finally near to it’s released i am more then grateful.

    • thetrooper1989

      amen!

    • Pekola

The casual thing is real. But not in the sense that people made it out to be.

Final Fantasy in general tends to keep your options open and oftentimes you don’t need to master the battle system. All the in-depth aspects are often found only by those who devote a bit more time on it.

It just has different connotations to a lot of gamers and they freaked out. Lol.

  • Stan Lilly

    cant wait…sooooo dope

  • DukeMagus

Auto-combo similar type-0? Tha would REALLY make sense: directional input change the combo string and you still have to time dodges and cancels correctly. Easy to play, hard to master. You can beat the game holding the right buttons, and that would give you the same result of mashing in other action games, but for the extra content (side quests, secret bosses, etc.) you need reflex and timing as good as the needed to play a fighting game.

I hate the artistic choices made in the game and the little they revealed about the plot doesn’t convince me, but i’m starting to get intrested in the gameplay

  • MC_HAMMERPANTS

    Timeline of emotions.

1993: I’m playing hooky from school to play the copy of ff2 my mom rented from blockbuster. Jrpgs are ILL. Squaresoft is king.

94-02: So many excellent games I don’t know where to begin.

2003: X-2 is released. Something a bit fuckey is going on here boys.

2003: Plugged in my GBA SP and boot up FFT: Advance. That game sucked ass.

2006: I’m attending my very first midnight release to pick up FF 12. I bought the collectors edition. Vaan. How could someone give the greenlight to some of these characters. Bad game. No worries though these things happen…

2006: Square announces FF Versus 13. I’m excited as fuck boys.

2007: FF7 Crisis Core wasn’t terrible and TWEWY was awesome. Nice one Square.

2008: I bought Infinite Undiscovery new for 60$. Don’t think anything further needs to be said.

2010: “Mom’s are tough.” So much cringe worthy dialog in the POS known as FF 13. I’m embarrassed to have my roommate watch me play.

2014: This company is fucked. They’ve destroyed their best series. Parasite Eve went casual and sucked. FF Tactics went casual and sucked. Mana went casual and sucked. Tactics Ogre PSP re-release went casual by removing all challenge. Don’t get me started on their mobile games bullshit.

So I quit caring about FF15. Then the TGS trailer drops. Holy fuck boys. I’m excited about a Square game again. Now this dick is telling me “casual.”

Oh well, at least we still have ATLUS.

    • Zackasaur

Er, the “casual” translation problem was cleared up ages ago. It’s easily among the least casual entries in the series. >_>

      • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

We don’t know how casual it is, as the story is apparently pretty easy.

        We stiil need more info!

        • Yuntu

I think I’ve said this allready but: I havn’t played any FF where the story was hard to play through. There might be 1-2 bosses that are tought, but nothing really major.

        • Zackasaur

He told us that it’s like every past FF game… Entirely beatable if you grind, but challenging if you want to do the optional stuff or don’t stay leveled up.

    • Bonn Bo

i honestly laughed out loud at this. Good game sir.

    • Estou Farto

OP i understand everything u said, feel exactly same way, but then again i didn’t like the changes in FFX but still enjoyed the game, after that was disappointment after disappointment.

    • SOLOmio

Vaan! How could they!? It was the first time that I felt that the main hero …..(I don’t have words). Every time I was telling myself” Now he gonna step up and show what he’s made of” wheen i major event scene popped up, but every freaking time or he didn’t no nothing but watch or balthier took the lead and save the day.
Vaan is the useless hero ever in ff series, but I still want redemption for him. it was se fault for wanting to please the girls

    • AdamBoy64

Lolz. I’m probably the only one here who liked Infinite Undiscovery. Wish the game was like 3x longer though.

      • Mike Boone

        i dont.

      • JReezy

I liked that game a lot. Probably the main reason why I regret trading my 360. It wasn’t the best thing ever or anything but I thought Tri-Ace did well with it.

        • AdamBoy64

Awesome. Glad to meet another IU fan. :)

It’s one of my favourites from last gen, for sure.
The gameplay was a lot of fun. And the battle system was fantastic.

    • Mike Boone

best comment in the entire world

  • notcarolkaye

Nobody will ever know if this game was made better or worse because of Tabata taking over. However, no matter how it turns out there’ll be people who insist he butchered it and it would’ve been better with Nomura. To them, I say in advance, go fornicate yourselves.

    • Zackasaur

Nomura and Tabata are both freaking amazing directors.

      • notcarolkaye

Yup, and frankly I think the switch was probably a good move. Like we’ll get the best of both of them. Even still, I’m 100% sure that some people will say Tabata screwed it up.

        • Zackasaur

I’m 100% sure a bunch of people will have illegitimate complaints just to troll. :P

I mean, I have some mixed feelings about the Nomura-Tabata thing, but I have absolute confidence that the game will be amazing. And given that this lets Nomura focus 100% on KH, this might be the best result in the end.

KHIII is my most anticipated game by miles, followed by FFXV. c:

Type-0 HD is actually my third most. lulz I’ve been waiting so long to play the full Type-0. @_@

    • HalfLucan

I think better, the story in KH has gone bat sh*t crazy, and considering the amount of time this game has been in development, i think the responsibility was too much for Nomura to make 2, next-next gen games.

Tabata was the director for Crisis Core and Type-0, both had fantastic plots. Despite Tabata saying “casual”, i swear he’s said it in the context of “everyone should be able to finish the campaign regardless of their skill, but if you want to tweak your loadouts, finish the side missions and do some high level dungeons’s – you can”

I hope there’s a “proud mode” like in KH to up the difficulty a bit

      • notcarolkaye

I agree that the switch to Tabata will make it better. I would speculate that after all this time Nomura was too close to it and had lost some perspective. Tabata brings a fresh pair of eyes that’ll allow him to finish things up from a more objective point of view.

  • Damian Solis

Im getting this game at MIDNIGHT! It’s been 8 years, maybe 9 when it hits, but everything is perfect and to my surprise, well worth the wait. Tetsuya did his part, the story, characters; now tabata will see it through.

U got a mafia-like, royal family ruling over whats pretty much a modern day kingdom

A prince who is the next heir, in love with a princess from a rival city state (very Shakespearian)

They have to fight each other because of very complicated political allegiances (hence the mafia-like nature)

gladio is like a big brother to noctis, & part of a family line sworn to protect the royal blood line

Promto is noctis’ bad influence type friend

    Ignis is his military tactician

and they’re a group of friends! So the all male cast makes sense story wise.

And u can teleport and kick ass. What’s not to like about this game?

    • aromero36

if anyone has seen or read an anime nisekoi, then FF XV is nisekoi FF style

      • Damian Solis

Wow thats spot on. I read the synopsis. The only big difference being the comedy part. XV is very raw, but so natural that most ppl probably missed it in the trailer scene when King Regis is basically telling lil noctis that if he doesn’t like the soup, the cook might be killed. Lol man, raw brutal story, political turmoil, bad ass magic, and gloriously epic summons the likes of which no other FF has ever seen. Makes me wonder how the hell they’ll work. I want that leviathan though.

        • Yuntu

Never saw that cook-thing that way – but with all we know, that might the case.

          • Damian Solis

“you mustn’t say so, lest the cook be sent away.” I guess it is open to interpretation, but in every story about kings, kingdoms, or mafiosos, in these situations if the entertainer or cook does not satisfy, its off with his head. Unless here he means fired lol

            • Yuntu

Is that mafioso-theme confirmed? I only know that there is supposed to be a love-story that is inspired by Romeo and Juliet, like you said, but it that mafioso thing something the fans made up or something nomura said? i wasn’t really following this game until e3, only watched the trailers now and then.

              • Damian Solis

Yea trust me I’ve been following it since 2005 when I heard they were making an announcement at E3 2006. Nomura confirmed it as a “mafia-like hierarchy.” they’re not called the mafia but the family government operates like one. It was supposed to be a metaphor for the way governments in our world act like thugs sometimes.

    • Zackasaur

      I like you!

I’m Darth_Xehanort on the PSN. Throw me an invite if you’re up for it~

      • Damian Solis

Cool I’ll do that when I buy me a ps4 lol which will be when this game comes out

        • Zackasaur

          Sweet~

      • Rennel DeCastro

Sorry i just had to make an account to comment on your comment specifically. COTF! Coheed fucking rocks!

        • Zackasaur

          A Child of the Fence!

Yes, they’re by far my favourite band. There is nothing else like Coheed. I can’t wait for the next installment of The Amory Wars.

          • Rennel DeCastro

Same here. I really can’t wait to see GA1 all fleshed out. Claudio said he was hoping for a 2014 release. I’m just waiting lol

            • Zackasaur

Yeah, we’ll have to see! He had his child not too long ago, so I’m sure that eats up a lot of time. At the end of the day, the story and comics are a collaborative effort between him and his wife.

Hopefully their next tour sends them back near my location~

I usually pirate my music, tbh, but I always by the collector’s editions of Coheed albums. Hopefully their next one is as snazzy as the Afterman set is!

              • Rennel DeCastro

AHAH same here! Hm, i wonder what the story will be this time. Yeah, the Afterman DE was awesome! I loved the Signed VIP Pass!

    • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

I like a lot of it, Im just skeptcle of the combat.

  • Jay

While I’m not liking the things said… I’ll let the final product do the talking.

  • LunarHaven

Making the auto evasion cost MP is a great move and has made it go from seeming casual to becoming tactical and thoughtful to use.

After reading this I gotta say I’ve become much more optimistic again, looking forward to trying it out to see how well it plays out!

  • Felix Samuel

I just wonder how grande will it be if it is a boss fight like fighting leviathan, bahamut, etc. with auto evasion that costs MP and short warp that I think is useful to evade really make this game to have a fast paced n tactical battle system.

its really interesting. imo this game will really have a lot potential to be developed.

    • Yuntu

Now that you say Leviathan – I wonder if the fight against that one is still in the game like we saw it in the E3 trailer.

      • Felix Samuel

Yeah I hope It can be like that or maybe we can fight it under water like ff X ? mmm yummy its gonna be great lol .

imo I think the fight will be similar like God of War when Kratos fight all the mythical gods but of course in FF style which is gonna give us a lot of surprising brand-new element ^_^

  • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

Now just confirm button tapping for attacks

    • JReezy

That’s pretty much all I want. Although the battle system as is isn’t as hand holdy as it was first described so I’m looking forward to the game again.

      • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

Same here, the jump button thing really made me happy.

I just am disgusted at the idea of holding the button.

        • notcarolkaye

WHY!? Are you disgusted at the idea of holding the stick to walk? That’s just how this game works. Give it a chance.

          (Sorry I shouted, but geez.)

          • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

Ive played games with that sort of combat, it was not fun at all.

            • notcarolkaye

It’s still a prejudicial attitude. If you play this, you won’t be going in with an open mind. It’s the easiest thing in the world to sabotage your enjoyment of a video game by having a bad attitude.

Like when Roger Ebert called Dark Souls a soul draining experience or something. He wanted to feel justified about all the shit he’d talked about video games, so he played it, determined not to like it. It’s a great game, but with a bad attitude it’d be easy to dislike.

So think how you want, but you might be costing yourself a great experience.

              • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

Who says Im not going in open minded? I am, I am just going in with low expectations.

                • notcarolkaye

You know, that’s fair enough. Also, I’m sorry if I came off harsh or critical. I’ve seen you around here and you seem like a good guy/girl.

                  • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

Thanks, and Im not offended. I just wanted to clear that up though :)

    • Norris

I know this was an old comment, but during PGW, Tabata has confirmed button tapping for attacks.

  • PhoenixAutomatic~♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪~

Well, Everyone seems to be upset about the new Active Cross Battle system. I think implementing a brand new system is well thought, But the control and usage of just one character is what bugged me and many others as most FF Titles claimed to have all the protagonists playable. Albeit, The AXB is still being developed as it is still in it’s early stages, Also neither of us has played or even experienced the Demo. At the very least, Square is listening to it’s fan base, Long projects most of the time have issues or error due to limitations of Game Engine or unable to bring the prototype to life

I was already furious of not adding any female party characters but accepted the fact why they weren’t able to have them playable, Of course in the plot they will have a big role to play, examples are Luna, Stella & The Green-eyes Black-haired woman. There may be more but who knows? So basically, most of us will have to accept the fact that many expectations will not delivered and If anything’s possible, it’s to give feedback right after playing the Demo. I have short hopes of Square having all of the four characters playable otherwise, Most users including myself will have to burden playing with a single character.

    • HalfLucan

Not a burden… No one complained about KH being 1 playable character or having no female playable characters (or crisis core for that matter, or rachet and clank, or crash bandicoot)

      • PhoenixAutomatic~♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪~

What I actually meant was in most of the FF series you can play with any of the main characters(Females as well), in this aspect FFXII is a good example where you can switch between characters in large open world game. Of course for KH1 no one complained because that was the style of the battle system. But for FFXV I believe they should allow the other 3 to be playable.

        • Estou Farto

          Agree.

        • http://iadagraca.com/ BasedWolf

The thing is all those character in XII played exactly the same, it was menu based not button based.

Here you have people with guns or huge swords, so the play style could possibly change for each of them.

          • PhoenixAutomatic~♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪~

My point exactly! I want them to give us what we saw in the 2011 trailer(Prompto Shooting etc..). They’ve added a new battle system but restricted usage to one character. Its still making me furious about this!

            • http://iadagraca.com/ BasedWolf

It’s hard for me to imagine cause it sounds like it’d be a completely different game.

I wonder how useful stuff like environment damage is in a final fantasy game. I’ve seen them play with the idea a lot (i saw it back in the first trailer for XIII) but they never do it.

              • Yuntu

Didn’t Tabata did it in Type-0? Atleast I think I’ve read that somewhere, didn’t played Type-0 yet.

                • http://iadagraca.com/ BasedWolf

                  i’m not sure….

              • PhoenixAutomatic~♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪~

There! It’s the limitations of the game engine. High Definition Graphics are time consuming to create. having extra useful stuff makes the game even more hard to develop as a lot of research is being allocated. That field gameplay for FFXIII is quite extensive so the same could be said for this.

                • http://iadagraca.com/ BasedWolf

Actually i think high definition graphics are easier, there’s less trial and error.

I said i can’t imagine it in the context of a characters own power versus environment damage (like blowing up a barrel or knocking an enemy into a wall)

The only games that have factored this is tactics with fall damage and knock backs.

But what are these factors to a high level enemy or character? Is there a point where blowing up a barrel is a lot less effective than a standard gun shot? Cause once you get to that point, what was the point of implementing the feature at all?

                  • PhoenixAutomatic~♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪~

I am not sure about this. It depends on situations and what the level designers have in mind. Logically it wouldn’t make sense, a barrel doing less damage than a gun shot. Coming to a point where a a barrel is less effective is how programmers count the damage being dealt with an enemy. A tough enemy would be time consuming and hard to defeat, therefore barrels just might be for enemies with fire weakness or/and defeating enemies as you level up to become stronger. As I said I not sure about this. So I wouldn’t really know.

If it’s justified in Kingdom Hearts because that’s the style of the battle system then it’s justified in Final Fantasy XV because that’s the style of the battle system. Why should this game be pigenholed to certain conventions because of its name?

          • PhoenixAutomatic~♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪~

It’s precisely because of it’s name. KH is very different, where control of one character is set. In FF you have Variety

            • JReezy

That’s a weak argument. Maybe it’s because I’ve done some studying on game design but developers aren’t supposed to have their creativity stifled because of arbitrary classifications like genre or franchise conventions. Nor should the ideas they end up implementing determine whether a game is, in this case, Final Fantasy enough.

              • PhoenixAutomatic~♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪~

Well, You are correct. However, Fans of the series would love the originality, the one core item of the franchise which would be it’s nostalgic gameplay. Final Fantasy has changed over the years yet, players seemingly have adapted to each numbered title, albeit entitled to their opinions. So would developers use feedback from fans to create their content or have a detailed plan regardless of their audience’s voice? I would say, correlate the two and see what best comes out of it. At the end of the day, The development team brings out what everyone would like and accept.

    • Youngsexynerd

I guess we can look at it this way. Would we rather wait 5 years to be able to play as all characters? or wait a year and a half to 2 years to go ahead and get this long awaited game now? I have been thinking about it and maybe they will have time to add the other members as playable in the sequel!? Since along time ago Nomura did say he would like it to be a trilogy with each game being a complete beginning and end! So who knows??

      • PhoenixAutomatic~♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪~

Yes that would be possible, but then there are no confirm plans for sequels as FFXV would be a huge package to players. I think they should get it out within two years considering all playable characters(since they already mentioned noctis is the only playable character,my last guess they are probably gonna go with that) but honestly, they should release this fast and bring back old directors except toriyama for new concepts and the plans for FFXVI and if possible Agni’s Philosophy. Right now, the long production process has delivered almost everything. After the feedback from the Demo, If they still don’t allow all 4 playable, im just going to have to accept playing with a sole member.

  • Ian Manning

I’d like a little challenge with my games, make all the party members playable, regardless of the difficulties! Also, could the game have more party members? 5 isn’t cutting it and apparently, girls can’t be allowed to be playable. Could you change that and add 2 or 3 girl party members?

Other than that, good luck with the story, the world of FFXV, and the other characters AND villains.

    • JReezy

The character switching has nothing to do with game difficulty. It’s a technical difficulty that isn’t feasible with the gameplay mechanics they’ve implemented.

      • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

It is possible, I think they just havent figured it out yet.

        • JReezy

I doubt it. Maybe you’re not entirely understanding my statement. A possibility based on the videos of Versus XIII/XV out now: The earlier gameplay they showed had character switching but you’ll notice it never showed that more direct party interactivity that Noctis has with his bros in combat. Fast forward to now and they’ve added that stuff in. They’ve probably figured out they would have to sacrifice that interactivity when it comes to the story and mechanics they’re trying to tell with Noctis. Now you might be thinking, “Why can’t they just allow that stuff to happen across the other members of the party?” The reason probably being because Noctis is THE main character and they’re really trying to show that sense of camaraderie through him.

          • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

In the 2013 demo they had the character moments, and multiple playable characters, the only real issue with it that they would have is the like you said Noctis being the main guy and that…is well it, I wouldnt mind playing them even if I couldnt use those ablities, it would be cool

            • JReezy

I don’t see being able to switch characters in any of the E3 2013 footage I’ve looked at so far. You got a link to a specific video?

          • Barakon

It did have it. If you watch the E3 2013 trailer, the player switches to Prompto early on in the video and then later they have the team scene where they kill the behemoth. The contextual team/environment kill stuff was still there. Square just gutted the combat system to make it easier/less work to implement and gave Nomura’s brainchild to Tabata to show off as his own. Versus had the potential to be somethin really special but it’s been turned into something it wasn’t trying to be because square has no idea how to develop on their own engines and wasted crazy amounts of money, now they have to make it appealing so they can recoup losses. This game will probably still be good, and I’ll probably still get it just because I waited so long, but it’s definitely not what it could’ve been

            • JReezy

You have a link to this E3 video? And I mean obvious direct control just like earlier Versus XIII footage and not some quick cutscene.

              • Barakon

                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60nWEuj2wAI

This is the trailer with the interactivity and yes it’s the same as XV. It’s a contextual kill animation that happens either automatically or through a certain trigger (like when Noctis is hurt in the new FFXV trailer and Gladiolus helps him up and kills the enemy for him) the only difference is before it would’ve resulted in a short camera zoom out that probably would’ve been a QTE but now the camera remains normal and you just watch the animation, like in the 2014 tech demo when Noctis does the team up move with Ignis. Essentially, the moves still happen in the same ways and situations, they just look different.

                • JReezy

                  That’s not character switching.

              • Barakon

And weirdly I couldn’t find any trailers that showed the switching but if you scroll down in this neogaf thread, you’ll see the screenshot that shows the Player controlling Prompto

          • Barakon

And if you think I’m bein a lil far fetched with me saying the game is something it wasn’t trying to be, look at the overall tone of the game now. It’s being labeled as a road trip movie game…that really should be enough said. Not to say it was gonna be grimdark before or anything but the way Nomura described it, it was more based on family ties and like a mafia story “fantasy based on reality”. Noctis was still planned to be a fun guy who had a good relationship with his friends but it was just an aspect to the game and not the main story focus. Watching old trailers and comparing to new, besides the obvious graphics difference, even the music is different now. But then again who knows. The scale could just be much bigger now, and all the more serious stuff is just under wraps

            • JReezy

Arbitrary labels based off a few minutes of footage don’t prove much. Did the tone seem darker in that earlier Versus XIII footage? Yeah. Is it lighter in tone since the switch to XV? Yeah. Is that some definitive proof that it’s some buddy ol pal roadtrip game? Nah. I see the changes too but I’m not making assumptions about the whole experience because the characters have been more fleshed out and have a lighter tone than what we saw around 8+ years ago to before E3 2013.

              • Barakon

…you realize the director of the game compared the game to road trip movies and referenced Tommy Boy right? lmao thats not something I just pulled out my ass.

                • JReezy

It’s arbitrary because that’s not really telling me anything. It coming out of his mouth doesn’t change it.

Moderator – Be nice. Let’s just move on. Thanks.

      • Ian Manning

Moderator – I removed the above comments. Let’s just move on. Thanks.

  • Martian Wong

The first paragraph sounds like damage control.

    • JReezy

      How?

      • Martian Wong

        Just feels like it.
“Right now we are in the process of migrating functions from the prototype into it. It will take time to migrate it all. I wanted to show footage in the actual environment as soon as possible, so I ended up showing something that is in the midst of migrating.” Prior to our response to the One button gameplay, Tabata did not mention that they are in the midst of moving stuff from last year’s trailer to the game. He seems to know that we do not like what we see and we prefer what we saw in E3 2013 trailer. Having said that, he is hoping to calm us down.

        • Djkarl Pierre

I’ve been trying to calm my girl after she saw the demo, she made me sleep on the couch for a week.

        • Anarcki

I don’t think that’s what he’s saying, as a developer they don’t reveal everything at once. There will more than likely be more things revealed in November that hasn’t been stated before

        • JReezy

Prototype environments and mechanics are made all the time. If you study up on game development enough you’ll know he didn’t just come up with that on the spot to try and justify the absence of some mechanic or another. Plus with the recent gameplay elements they’ve been showing off nothing contradicts his story.

  • Youngsexynerd

I was really mad about this at first. I mean like INSANE RAGE mad… But after thinking about it for a couple days and then reading this. I have come to the conclusion to just WAIT and SEE. My hype was significantly lowered with the developer and development changes. But that actually might be a good thing for us all!!! So now, I will wait for the demo to see if the battle system is good or not, if its not we ALL simply let burn the internet down to make sure squre hears us and makes it more hardcore. And if the battle system is good then, AWESOME! It will sure be better in the finalized game with all the content! I am bummed out about not being able to play as the other characters but mehhh, I guess I loved FF12 and I pretty much playeda s Vann the whole time so no big deal….. and its confirmed to have a draining meter for defending witch is VERY good (I was actually thinking if they had a meter like the Naruto games then that would work, so this is cool) AND we can attack by actually pressing the buttons and not holding it down so THANK GOD for that! BUT HELL YESSS that the rumors about Jump not being in, are a lie! We can JUMP people!! We can JUMP!!! LOL Air combos and jump exploring are a GO!!

    • ayanami-chan

I will definitely douse my hype flame after the triplet mistake that was FFXIII

      • Youngsexynerd

I actually found FF13-2 as one of the most fun FFs I have ever played. It was huge, open, and TONS of side quests, exploring, secrets and things to do like monster catching and figuring out the best teams and stuff. Its what FF13 should have been! Anyway as for other playable characters, at least we still have the summons to battle and then control in FF15 as demo’d in the first FF15 trailer with Leviathan!

    • Mike Sauer

Yes, that’s how it’s always been. “Wait and see” Better late than never for some I guess, but there’s nothing more annoying than when people jump to conclusions.

  • PrinceHeir

Damn when there’s always an article about Square Enix and FFXV and KH3 in general.

There’s always tons of comments O___O

  • Mike Boone

    Square will never learn.

    • JReezy

      Learn what?

    • Kumomeme

i hope you could teach them

  • Cemile Ve Ledeyna

Final fantasy x was by far the best I recon and the best romance heartbreaking story I can only wish to see something like that more so towards the future hopefully in 15 the story will have some gd romance story in it as well with the main but some far dnt see much footage going on that sad
