Sony Computer Entertainment announced a number of new PlayStation 4 games during its Japan Asia press conference earlier this week. But there is a lot more to come, according to SCE Japan Asia senior vice president Hiroshi Ueda.

“I’m glad that, of all the titles we showcased, they were exceedingly abundant in variety,” Ueda stated in the latest issue of Dengeki PlayStation. “If we limit the number to packaged [retail] games, not including download versions, I believe by March of next year we’ll be able to have 170 titles announced to date.”

He elaborated on his thoughts regarding the console maker’s showings from SCE Japan Asia’s press conference earlier this week, saying that, “Developers in Japan are feeling the momentum that the PS4 has been building up and are increasingly seeing opportunities for developing games on the platform.”

In particular, “When I learned about Dragon Quest: Heroes, I was both shocked and really delighted. It has the potential to become the game with the highest attach rate released thus far; the amount of responsibility and nerves I’m feeling over its prospective success is hard to put into words.”

Moving forward, Ueda feels that one of Sony’s main objectives in curating PlayStation 4 games is to “make sure that the games that we do have lined up moving forward attract their audiences.” Furthermore, in terms of the console’s overall feature set, he said, “It’s difficiult to answer to everyone’s demands, but we’ll keep listening to consumer feedback and continue to expand on the platform.”

Ueda also had a few words to say about PS Vita and its ongoing prospects.

“The number of players actively using PS Vita is quite high,” he asserted, “which has made creators and developers express their belief to us that they can sell games on the handheld… I think we’ll also see some games based on existing smartphone titles come to the PS Vita.”

Thanks, Sokuho@Hokanko.

Editor’s Note: There’s been a slight error in translation. The quote “I think we’ll be able to announce 170 titles, only packaged titles and not including download versions, by March of next year” has been changed to “If we limit the number to packaged [retail] games, not including download versions, I believe by March of next year we’ll be able to have 170 titles announced to date.”

“which has made creators and developers express their belief to us that they can sell games on the handheld…”

Too bad none of those creators seem to be at Square Enix, Level-5, Capcom, Konami or fuck, even SCE.

    • Elvick

Well, SE is giving it Chaos Rings at least.

More than the rest have coming. (Unless you include 2nd party western games, New Invizimals coming)

  • Mr. Uncensored 2015

So he likes the fact that the PS Vita is pretty much a Indie Machine.

    • indra jaya

in the west sadly. but in japan we still get many games from medium to big developers :)

    • Elvick

Bamco is totes indie. Oh wait…

    • Zackasaur

      That’s a laughable statement you’ve just made.

      • jujubee88

        Muhahaha!

  • Protagonist

So does this mean we can expect more announcements come tgs on sept 18? Or are they gonna hold the rest off for other events?

  • xkumo

170 titles including the ones we know about up until now, or starting now?

    • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Due by means up till March next year

      • xkumo

        That doesn’t answer my question…

        • Elvick

I’d assume it includes what we know about.

        • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

          How does it not?

    • Kodai Ichi

It’s everything you’ve seen, and whatever is announced throughout the rest of this year.

In short, TGS will be the finale of what games you can expect to see from Japan, which contribute to this 170 titles by March 2015 announcement. A few of which we already know of, such as One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3, and Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force, as well as Yakuza 0, and others…

      • Orichalon Hades

so basically we still have around 126 unannounced game? woo~

  • papermario

He sure lays it on thick lol. But that is his job and he is good at it. He managed to say something good about Vita.

    • Zackasaur

It’s not hard to say good things about the Vita. c:

      ESPECIALLY in Japan.

      • papermario

Vita is flop in Japan. Especially when you compare it to PSP.

        • Zackasaur

Vita is VERY far from a flop in Japan. It sells a lot of units and a lot of games.

The PSP had a similar start over there and boomed more as it aged. Interestingly enough, so is Vita.

Maybe it won’t match PSP numbers in the end, but it is already a cosmos away from a flop. The 3DS will never get close to DS numbers; is it a flop?

Both handhelds are successes in Japan. They’re just successes in a shrunken market.

          • papermario

The difference being PSP on average has sold over 75% what the Vita is doing on a weekly basis. Even before PSP boomed.

            • Elvick

Not selling as well as something else =/= flop.

  • Bob Slim

Japan is lucky so many games on ps4 and vita.
    What the west got nothing

    • Kevadu

Most of these ‘170 titles’ are probably western games, you know…

      • Bob Slim

Most its not like the west got a lot of games to begin with.
Im sure it just a small bit of west games. Japan really dont care for west games why you think the ps4 didnt start off well there.

        • Kevadu

First of all, there are tons of PS4 titles in the west. Just not a lot of exclusives. But he never says exclusives. He never says they’re Japanese titles. He never says these are 170 titles expected to be big sellers. He doesn’t say anything of the sort. All he says is 170 titles.

If he says 170 titles then he is including every possible source of titles to make the number look as big as possible. That’s just how the PR game is played. If there were restrictions on that 170 number he would say it, because it would then imply that the total number was bigger. But he doesn’t, so we can infer that this 170 number includes every possible source.

And it doesn’t matter if western games are big in Japan or not. They still get released there (there are some Japanese gamers who like them) and they count as titles. So they will be included. And there are a lot of western PS4 titles on the way despite your insistence otherwise, so yeah I think it’s pretty safe to say that they’re going to make up the majority of that 170 number. Not all of it, of course…just most of it.

          • Bob Slim

I didnt say anything about exclusives I know they not. And for the west games they have to be localized in Japan I dont think they will count them. But what ever you say man

      • Hidayat246

or several games from “170” is actually indie title

        • Mikail

Wild, No Man Sky, Alienation’s, yesss, we need more indies :)

  • Unknown

A little confusing if someone can help me understand that would be great. When he says 170 retail games will have been announced by march, does he mean from japanese developers? 170 retail games to japan (western titles incldued via localization)?

if its the first, I’ll be super excited, if not then meh.

edit: also does he mean for the just the ps4, or both ps4 and vita?

    • BlueCereal

I think it includes Western games and multiplats.

      • Unknown

not gonna get excited for that then… most of those will probably be western games

        • Kodai Ichi

It’s guaranteed that the majority of these 170 titles are Western developed games. The leader of this pack is none other than Destiny, a FPS that on a whole has no place in the Japanese game market, seeing as the FPS genre is frowned upon there.

    • Bob Slim

No this is just for Japan most these games wont even come out west
      unfortunately

      • Unknown

if these games are on the ps4 made by the japenese developers… then I’m fully confident that these will be localized (9mil units of the ps4 in the west sold say so).

        • Zackasaur

The PS4 has sold roughly 10 million in the west by now. :P

          And around 600-700k in Japan.

        • Bob Slim

Yeah some will not all. Its up to the west companies
to bring them over. Do you really think all 170 games will make it here I dont think so I wish.
          The good games anyway

          • Unknown

yes they probably will, 9mil sold in the west with like less then 1mil in japan. I believe that 90% will come over

            • Bob Slim

Lmao if you say so man. trust me those ps4 sales is gonna go up a lot now. They just wanted Japanese games to come

    • Zackasaur

He means just for the PS4, and he is specifically talking about retail games in the Japan-Asia market. It’s actually quite a high number!

      • Unknown

if this is true (meaning 170 japanese developed games to be announced) then I’m fucking hyped

        • Kevadu

There is no possible way it’s 170 Japanese-developed games. See my reply to Bob Slim below.

          • Unknown

yeah this makes a LOT of sense… to bad. Now that I think about it I fully believe that 85% (rough estimate) of these games will be western.

            • Bob Slim

85% please Japan makes the most games its not even close

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Well if SE has their head out of their arse then maybe one of those games can be a Remake of FFVII. Ah what am i kidding.

    • 強大なサム(Mighty Sam)

That’ll need shitloads of money.I mean, the PSOne version was estimated to had cost 150 million dollars to make.so remaking the graphics, voice actings, music, gameplay etc. would at least cost one third of the original budget and also it will take years to finish.

  • Six

How many of them will also be on PS3 and Vita? How many will also be on Xbone and PC?

How many will be Devil May Cry 5? None, that’s how many.

    • MrFinalgamer

I think the better questions are: How many are developed by Sega? How many will be Valkyria Chronicles related? How many will be localized?

      • Martian Wong

They still holding back PSO 2 for what so ever reason.

      • Orichalon Hades

stop please. You’re re-opening old wounds
        Q_Q

  • Martian Wong

“which has made creators and developers express their belief to us that they can sell games on the handheld…” Monster Hunter Portable 4?

    • Zackasaur

Capcom shudder at the thought of actually moving the Monster Hunter series forward.

      • Martian Wong

They said that not moving forward actually means it is moving backward.

  • Jormangund

At first, I was super fucking hyped for this. I mean, 170 titles, amirite?! And then I realized that wait, shit, there’s a chance a lot of this is shovelware, or stuff I’m not interested in. Reading the comments just hammered that in. Oh well. Still excited, but not exactly hyped anymore. I’ll stay cautiously optimistic.

    • Elle

Or games that will never leave Japan.

      • Jormangund

        *reels back in pain*
Please don’t. I don’t think my heart could take it.

        • Elle

It’s why I’m trying to learn japanese. I always wanted to anyway. Memorizing Kanji tho…

Hey all, I just wanted to drop by and apologize for the translation error more formally now that I’m actually home. Pretty regularly, Sal will send me rough drafts of an article that already have the introductory remarks put in so that the piece can be structured for best impact. While the initial translation was his, it was ultimately me who gave it a pass and took editorial credit for the piece as a whole since I wrote more or less everything else, as is normal for these articles. I understood what it meant from the outset in Japanese, but my proofreading skills aren’t necessarily the best in the world, so it didn’t really process that I needed to change it until after it ran.

Mistakes happen, but I still feel bad about it given how this site is used as a translation source by other publications, so I just wanted to say I’m sorry and I’ll try my best moving forward to pay better attention. Thanks for your understanding! :)

    • notcarolkaye

Well, it ruined my life! I liked my life before you made that mistake, but I don’t anymore.

Okay, I’m kidding. I never liked my life. I’m profoundly unhappy.

      • http://freelansations.tumblr.com/ Thomas James

        <3

    • Articuno76

On an aside, how many games does that region have announced already? If we can work that out we can figure out what that quote really means in context.

  • EspadaKiller

Just pay Capcom money for a MH game on the PS4/Vita (cross buy/play) and it will be all good.

Oh and pay more companies to release more JRPGs for the PS4 too. Persona 5 is a good direction, although it’s coming out for the PS3 too.

  • Hidayat246

“……When I learned about Dragon Quest: Heroes, I was both shocked and really delighted. It has the potential to become the game with the highest attach rate released thus far; the amount of responsibility and nerves I’m feeling over its prospective success is hard to put into words………..”

yeah why not surprised when the 2 main title & spin-off series is never come to sony console but suddenly one title coming to sony console without notice

  • xMCXx

    Please be excite!

  • phayroent

Good, and hopefully most of them will be worldwide releases. Everyone deserves as much gaming as they can get.
