Dragon Quest: Heroes

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia’s 2014 press conference has come and gone, and if you missed it or need a recap of all the announcements, we’ve gathered all the news in one place.

Find our round-up below.

PlayStation 4

PlayStation 3

PS Vita

  • Articuno76

Not sure if this was announced as part of the press conference or not, but apparently the entire PSP digital catalogue is coming to Japanese PS+:

    http://www.siliconera.com/2014/09/01/playstation-plus-members-japan-will-get-250-psp-games-free-play-titles/

Not sure of the validity of this information but Siliconera is generally quite a solid source. The wording of the story still leaves room for ambiguity though (do we get free access to the games? Or does this simply waive the UMD Passport fee?).

    • Jormangund

You need the original UMDs to get the free downloads. Or at least, that’s what I’m inferring. Could be wrong.

      • Articuno76

That’s a shame (if that’s the case). I’m guessing the scheme is part of a second wave effort to get ex-PSP owners to make the jump over to the Vita (or sideways from the 3DS if that’s where they went post-PSP).

To me that story is really unclear. It implies there’s a connection by bringing up the history of the UMD Passport system but doesn’t spell out how that factors in now.

That could mean this news goes against the current passport system (no fees at all) and that’s why it’s newsworthy, or the UMD passport history could simply be context.

    • Solomon_Kano

      https://twitter.com/BIOtheCAT/status/506359206920740864

It apparently works exactly the same as it does on PSP, but now you can use it directly with a Vita.

  • RSene

From which event is this conference? Isn’t for TGS, right? Considering TGS is from 18-21 Sept, I’m wondering what conference is this from Sony….

    • Chris Yuen

this is the pre-TGS conference. A conference where they lay out their plans, and 3rd party partners get to preview some stuff before the actual show itself.

      • sll1cool1m

So is this all then ? Or is it still possible that they show new stuff at the actual TGS ?

        • Jormangund

After the amount of stuff they showed here, I don’t really think there will be more to show at TGS. Here’s praying I’m wrong though.

          • sll1cool1m

            That would be a bummer.

            • Jormangund

It really would. I myself am already pretty satisfied with what’s been showed so far though, considering that it’s convinced me to finally get off my ass and start saving for a PS4.

          • Kenny ケニー

Bandai Namco din’t showing much things in this Press Conference, and they have known as company that develop a lot of games, so i guese Bandai Namco will showing more new titles in TGS for Sony and Nintendo consoles, not sure but hopefully it will happen.

            • Jormangund

You DO have a point there. Man, the TGS hype is real.

        • Elle

They might. Gravity Rush 2 was announced at the actual show last year instead of the conference. Came out of nowhere.

          • sll1cool1m

Well I hope so. I think many people including me are waiting for ‘you know what’…

            • Elle

Don’t expect the same to happen for THAT lol seriously keep expectations in CHECK.

      • RSene

        Thanks! Very ‘enlightening’ indeed :)

  • MyBodyIsReady

Best show Sony have done in years!

  • https://twitter.com/RyoonZ RyoonZ

I can’t take any person seriously who thought this was a bad conference.

    • 罪罰

They really made us suffer at the beginning.
      Sony was going full retard.

      • Elvick

Yeah, they should ignore that western games come out in Japan.

        Oh wait.

  • Jormangund

Man, this conference was great. Hopefully, both Nintendo and Microsoft take this as a sign to pick up the slack and show some amazing shit for TGS.

    • Eder García

      Nintendo doesn’t go to TGS

      • Jormangund

        No shit? Awwww.

        • Digidyne017

In its place are platforms like GREE and such…

          • Jormangund

            *sigh*
            Ah well.

    • Zackasaur

Nintendo won’t be there, and I wouldn’t expect a whole lot out of MS in Japan. Anything they do have will be rejected by the players, just like the last two gens… TGS will be mostly PlayStation, mobile, and some 3DS.

      • Jormangund

        Well, dreaming’s free at least.

  • https://twitter.com/RyoonZ RyoonZ

Also Sal there’s a little game called Deemo from Rayark who made Cytus Lambda for Vita

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PXOPmXjWNs

    • sll1cool1m

Oh I’ve played this on my phone before. It’s pretty fun actually. Nothnig too spectacular though. It’s like Anime-Guitar Hero.

    • rekka_zan

Fully animate remake of all cutscenes FUCKING HYPE OMG

  • Six

Pretty meh showing. Persona 5 for PS4 means I can finally get rid of my PS3 at least. More Senran Kagura is nice, and I guess God Eater 2’s chances for localization have gone from zip to maaaaaybe.

  • Forty

Overall good show. A lot of time wasted on western stuff, but the start and end were fast and full of stuff.

Really happy to see Estival Versus PS4, Persona 5 PS4, Disgaea 5 PS4 among other things.

A little disappointed to see no mention of Gravity Rush 2 at all. That’s what I went into this hoping for the most.

    • Jormangund

      Maybe during the actual show?

      • Forty

I hope so. I remember last years teaser for the game wasn’t at Sony’s conference but was at TGS itself, so hopefully the same is happening here. Or they could be waiting to show more next year if it’s not entirely done.

        I don’t mind waiting if it’s good.

        • Jormangund

As long as we don’t have to wait too long, of course. And hopefully they’ll at least mention it to reassure the fans that “no, we haven’t forgotten”.

    • Budgiecat

      Ys

  • papermario

I thought that the event was pretty darn good. Games I am interested in.

  • Orichalon Hades

all in all it was a pretty great event
    walk in with 0 expectation
    walks out a happy man.

    • Anime10121

Agreed, it was far better than I expected

  • Rafael Martines

    E3 who?

  • Kuro-Law

This is how e3 should have been.

    • Six

I’d rather have Bloodborne, Scalebound, and Xenoblade X than a Dragon Quest spin-off and anime games.

      • Kuro-Law

So youd take 2 cg trailers and one gameplay trailer…
        Okay.

Edit:BTW i didnt even mean swap the games over i mean we should have gotten bigger announcements which hold more significance.

        • Six

I can’t think of anything announced at that thing more significant than new games from Miyazaki and Kamiya.

          • Kuro-Law

            Bloodborne was for sonys conference.
            Scalebound for MCs
            Xenoblade X from Nintendos.

not really fair combining them into one where this is only sonys

      • Budgiecat

        salty

        • Six

          About what?

          • Budgiecat

            salt

        • 罪罰

          evo 2015 salt tier

        • EX+

          Lol. You hyped for P5?

          • Budgiecat

Yeah they just need to show gameplay to confirm its above Catherine graphics. And no more VN like scenes please.
            And no Sho nonsense

  • McPoo

What’s the thing in the header image? Looks r8 lame.

    • Six

      Dragon Quest Not XI

      • McPoo

Reminds me of Blue Dragon a bit.

        • SuperLuigi

Same artist for both I believe. The dragonball dude

          • Mika Moreno

            *Akira Toriyama.

    • Budgiecat

      you look lame

      • McPoo

Not as lame as this m8.

        • Budgiecat

you’re a poo. thats as lame as it gets

          • McPoo

You’ve clearly not looked at that header image then m8.

            • Budgiecat

I did. No idea who Akira toriyama is or what DQ is?

              • McPoo

                Lame, that’s what they are m8ey ;)

                • Budgiecat

Your toilets calling. time to go flush yourself

                  • McPoo

                    P lame retort #plameretort

                    • Budgiecat

how can it be lame when it’s your destiny. All poo must be flushed

                    • McPoo

In favelas they do it in a bag, tie it up then walk to the edge of the favela, swing the bag and throw it as far as possible.

                      Tbf DQ is proper poo.

  • SgtFrog

3 days for xbox one sales in japan. and here we go with this announcement for ps4 today. rather than waiting for TGS14

    • Zackasaur

Xbone is dead on arrival in Japan. lol

That was already guaranteed, but Sony’s killer conference just made it even worse.

  • Eder García

finally! Sony showed the games that the Japanese wants for the PS4

  • BlueCereal

Some decent announcements. Better than E3 and a lot better than that horrble gamescom conference.

    • Zackasaur

For me, it was TGS > Gamescom > E3.

But I liked Sony’s showings at all three, this year.

  • SuperLuigi

I wonder if any of these besides RE and DOA are coming to xb1. I actually had to sell my ps4. I’ll live either way though.

    • DarthBrian

      Had to? :(

      • SuperLuigi

Wife had to quit her job for school. Needed funds and no offense to anybody but I use my xb1 more than my ps4. I see myself getting a sexy white ps4 in a couple years when she’s out of college though.

        • DarthBrian

Well, you’ll have a lot to look forward to when you finally do get that sexy white ps4. :)

          • SuperLuigi

Yup it will be like when I got my first ps3 in 2009! No game droughts!

    • TheBlackRabbit

oh dude…that blows. needed the money huh?

      • SuperLuigi

        Yup :/

        • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

I know that feel. Gaming is a tough hobby to have. If it helps though, I get the feeling that Persona 5 will show up for Xbox One as well, considering how P4A and P4U turned out, just makes sense financially.

          • Zackasaur

I actually highly doubt you’ll see Persona 5 on Xbone. They have been very clear about keeping game on PlayStation, where the fans are. It allows for more focused development.

            • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Atlus says a lot of things but it just makes financial sense to do a multiplatform release.

              • Zackasaur

It does not. They would waste time and money while losing optimisation, just to sell very few copies on other platforms, lose money on them, and not get as much promotion with Sony for the platform where copies actually do sell.

Atlus clearly know the situation better than you do. They’re doing this correctly.

    • Zackasaur

Looking at the list… Probably only RE and DoA.

      • SuperLuigi

At least this two are the ones I am most excited for anyway.

        • Zackasaur

They’re the only ones I definitely don’t want. xD

Well, other than that Vita dating sim.

          • SuperLuigi

Haha awesome. Well at least all of them are on ps4 when you get one.

            • Zackasaur

              Already have one, luckily. c:

Sorry about you having to sell yours.

  • Mr. Uncensored 2015

You forgot the news where they said they would be holding another Press Conference on 9/17.

    • TheBlackRabbit

      the actual tgs :D

  • dark-kyon

so the plan of sony to sell ps4 in japan is try to steal handheld and ps3 exclusive games in japan, for luck the japanese dev. have some sense not scraping the vita version.scummy of sony announcing some games how ps4 exclusive and not tell what is also in vita also.

    • Zackasaur

      lol

  • Tetsu

Well waking up to all this news is fucking awesome!

    • Mar Mar

I forgot I had to sleep after work because of these news. I’m no longer tired.

      DAAAYMMM!

  • Daniel Rossevelt

Wow Touhou for the PS4 never saw that coming. That’s pretty cool. Still disappointed over the lack of FF and KH games for the vita though, maybe at the TGS Square or Sony will announce something new.

  • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

I think we’ll get news on PS4 Idolmaster at TGS.

Last year, they teased the PS4 Idolmaster at the SCEJA Press Conference, but announced The Idolmater: One For All during a stage event at TGS.

    • Budgiecat

Will they localize like the 3 iOS games?

      • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

        Nah.

        • Budgiecat

          : /

    • Renaldi Saputra

The same happened in Anime Festival Asia 2014 in Jakarta, there’s Sony booth with Im@s OFA with oculust rift which is for PS4

      • Hidayat246

        really???
oh man i hope sony come to surabaya too

      • rekka_zan

        It’s not Oculust Rift.

      • Mikail

        you mean Project Morpheus :).

  • Elvick

I was happy with it. None of my wishes came true, but I wasn’t expecting them to anyway. :P

    • EX+

What? You didn’t wish to see P5?!

      • Budgiecat

He knew about P5 plus we saw no gameplay footage. Still was nice to see the MC and hear its also for PS4

      • Elvick

        Not really :P

I’ll care more when it’s close to western release, or just release in Japan really.

    • Budgiecat

some nice surprises though. Ys (even though they did throw out a water color like painting hint months back), GE2RB and DQ Heroes (which imo confirms a DQ XI PS4)

and now you can have your own 3D virtual girlfriend with Summer Lesson

  • EX+

Hey Sale! Sony is having another press conference on the 17th of September.

    Apparently SCEJA isn’t done yet.
Hopefully, it will lead to games like FF15.

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

Don’t get excited. They did the same thing last year. It’s just the same announcements but targeted towards the Asian region.

      • jujubee88

At this point, it’s safe to say all new game announcement have been revealed.

Further reveals (on games we know) will get shown in detail. For example, Kojima mentioned more MGS5 at TGS. :)

        • Elle

It wil probably be that same desert area we’ve seen since E3.

    • Ping92

probably some announcements of chinese and korean localisations like last time

    • MasterSensei

      Sure,
And Pigs will start to fly,
Cats and Dogs will live together,
and the world will finally know peace at last!

  • small44

Bad vita announcements but amazing ps4/ps3 announcement

    • Zackasaur

We got some pretty great stuff for Vita, imo.

But a lot of it is cross-platform with PS4, so take your pick or double dip.

      • Budgiecat

Shame UMD Passport doesn’t extend to the West…

        • Zackasaur

Do we KNOW it doesn’t? Or have they just not yet announced it?

          • Solomon_Kano

I don’t imagine UMD passport working with the Vita will change Sony’s mind about bringing that program west, so I wouldn’t expect it to be announced.

          • xXDGFXx

We know it doesn’t for two reasons:

            * it was stated by SCEA that there wasn’t enough interest.

            * SCEA has a fuckton of retards doing marketing + whoever directs them.

    • DanielGearSolid

      Bad? How?

    • -Misaki-

You can say nothing interests you, but “bad”?

    • small44

Look at psv list in this article and ps4 list.
It’s been 3 years and psv still didn’t get any of the big IP.

      • Hidayat246

because vita sales is still low compared to 3DS even after 3 years

        • small44

And that’s why i think it’s a bad Vita show

          • Solomon_Kano

Every Vita show’s going to be a bad Vita show if that’s the only thing that makes one good, then.

          • Hidayat246

……..and the only way to save vita show is MH Freedom 4 & Dissidia 3

            • Boldmonk

If get your friend to buy a vita and get their friends to do the same…just maybe the console will survive? If you/they think it’s too expensive then just buy the PSTV. If people can afford Apple TV or Android console, I’m sure they can afford the PSTV.

  • MasterSensei

FINALLY!! Sony has finally announced the release date and showed a trailer for The Last Guardian! Shuhei Yoshida said that the project wasn’t dead, and at first I didn’t believe him but… HERE IT IS!

    Oh wait…

    • Zackasaur

He said it wouldn’t be at the pre-TGS show.

Don’t you keep up with news?

      • MasterSensei

I just remember him saying that the series in not dead but I didn’t see or hear any news about it not having a pre-TGS showing…

        • Zackasaur

Yep, Gematsu has an article about it. :P

          • MasterSensei

Sorry about my earlier comment… I’m just starting to get frustrated that it’s not getting announced/released yet. I worried that it’s in development hell and that we might get another Duke Nukem Forever, same with Final Fantasy 15.

            • Zackasaur

No worries, mate. c: If it helps, keep this in mind:

FFXV and TLG are -nothing- like Duke Nukem.

For one thing, these two are made by some of the best devs in the world. DN Forever had shitty devs.

Furthermore, DN Forever kept getting passed from one studio to another, getting restarted every time. The final game that released only had maybe two years of development by a bad team.

FFXV and TLG were both too ambitious for PS3, but they’ll be just fine on PS4. c: While SE re-introduced Versus/XV early on, Sony are choosing to hide TLG until it is close to release.

    • Hidayat246

      confirmed for PS5 in 2020

  • heero2001

Good day to be a fan of Japanese games. I hate living in a place were people think Japanese games are niche or weird or whatever.

    • Solomon_Kano

Niche isn’t really a matter of opinion though. Outside of major franchises like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, and the like, Japanese games are niche in most western markets.

      • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Sad to say wouldn’t Namco’s Tales series count as Niche even though here in the States its steadiy gaining in popularity.

        • Solomon_Kano

It most certainly would. As you say though, it is gaining in popularity.

      • heero2001

I feel like calling Japanese games niche is more of a recent development or at least more pronounced in the recent gen. The way I think about niche is less about sales and more about perception (not mutually exclusive, I know). It’s not just that people don’t buy them, but there are some hostility/apathy towards them.

Maybe I am seeing the past through rose tinted glasses, but I feel at one time Japanese developed games had a kind of prestige to them. There are commercially unsuccessful games that are still spoken of in glowing terms today like ICO/Shadow of the Colossus/Odin Sphere. Now a days if you introduce a game as a “Japanese game” it is more likely to be thought of in a negative light or ignored.

All three of the franchises you listed established themselves as global franchises in the PS1 era and further cemented their reputation in the PS2 era. What new global Japanese franchises can we claim for the PS3 era? Dark Soul I guess. However despite being a critics favorite, Dark Soul II only sold about 1 million copies on PS3 and Xbox outside of Japan (vgchartz sucks but it’s probably at least in the ball park). The sales doesn’t have PC or digital number but almost all game are released PC and digitally now, so in relative terms Dark Soul II’s sale on PS3 and Xbox is still lower than other AAA games.

Of course there are legitimate reasons for the decline.: The move towards realism, expectation of cinematic story telling, popularization of the FPS genre. Other factors such as an increasingly mainstream audience that has comparably less exposure to foreign cultural, more Hollywood style promotion of games as blockbusters and many, many more all lead to where we are today.

I am an adult so I am comfortable with my choice of games. But a kid still in school will probably be discouraged from trying Japanese games because they aren’t cool. Peer pressure is a powerful thing. That’s just a little sad to me.

        • Solomon_Kano

I think it depends on who you talk to, really. Objectively speaking, today, Japanese games are more niche on the whole. It’s just the way the market shifted following the PS2. As to it being a negative, again, it’s on who you talk to. There are many gamers who proudly proclaim their interest in “niche” series like Disgaea or SMT or what have you. The people who use the term negatively are typically people who don’t enjoy the type of games that they perceive to fall under that banner, but if you like games like that, who cares what they think?

As to the bit about kids, who can say? I have enough faith in them to believe they wouldn’t let some pejorative determine what they choose to play.

  • jujubee88

Did people put together the clues in the P5 for PS4 trailer?

I’m sure I have but I don’t want to say anything cause, well, I’m embarrassed that I’d be wrong. :P

  • Nerkey

Still nothing about Deep Down huh???

I get it that Japan needs games also but I want half of these for NA!

    • Elle

Deep Down update was shown ahead of time and it looks amazing.

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Hmmm where the hell did FFXV go. At least lets hope Squeenix shows it at their TGS. It’d be best that they do that and as it is i have 15 friends i can think of that have been wanting to play FFXV since 2006.

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Man a new Dragon Quest for PS4. The last time a DQ game was on a Playstation console was PS2 and that was with Dragon Quest VIII.

I like Dragon Quest but still there’s something about the big Final Fantasy i’ve liked far more, and by FF i’m talking about FF1 – FFX.

  • http://hatintime.com/ ShadowFang

Man, Sony crushed it with this conference here, and ahead of TGS? So there will be more exciting stuff coming out of there?

As much enthusiasm as Nintendo drummed up for the Wii at E3 here in the West, I feel like Sony must’ve successfully done the same for the East with the PS4 today. Here’s hoping. If all of these don’t help the Playstation pick up the pace in Japan, that gaming market really is quite hopeless.

I would really have liked to see a brand-new RPG though, or a resurrected classic Sony franchise (Dark Cloud, Wild Arms, Legend of Dragoon…. Arc the Lad?). I mean, the fact that PS4 got Persona 5, a new Ys, and Koei x Tecmo’s Dragon Quest Heroes (which should be like their action-RPG Trinity as well as just another Musou title) is all totally awesome.

I can’t really complain about the state of RPGs on the PS4 right now. I just wanted to see a new thing, not just sequels. And yes, I consider sequels to dormant series “new” enough :)

I once said to a couple of friends 3 years ago that i saw PS4 becoming the New PS2. I didn’t realize how correct for the most part i’d end up being.

      A very accurate prediction!

If anything, it’s a combo of what the PS2 did right and what the PS3 did right.

It’s shaping up to be their best platform yet.

Seeing it all lined up nicely here (thanks, Sal!), it was a pretty good showing over-all. Several titles caught my interest ^^

The only twinge comes from how likely many of these titles will get localized. A few have already been confirmed, some of a good chance of making it over, but the others are still kind of murky…

But that won’t stop me from hoping for that Uta no Prince Sama game >3>

For me i find it funny how the first half of the show everyone(including me) we’re getting disgruntle with the lack of JPN games.

I remember how lots of you said wake me up after the Ubisoft conference, I was playing Senran Kagura Burst at that time.

Once they showed Bloodborne, Yakuza Zero things started to heat up!

Best for me is Senran Kagura Estival Versus and Ys!!

Persona 5 was an icing cake for me and Dragon Quest was pretty good to end the show floor ^^

Man always wait till the end for the best surprise!!

Part 1: Lots of Vita games
Part 2: Lots of western PS4 games
Part 3: Holy shit, take my money

Ys on PS4 and God Eater Rage Burt on PS4 are my main interests.
