Yokai Watch 2 dethroned by Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax is the the top seller in this week’s Japanese sales figures. The PlayStation 3 fighting game opened at 89,000 sales.

It dethrones Yokai Watch 2 for 3DS, which was the top seller for seven consecutive weeks since launch. It placed third at 68,000 sold, and follows after new PS Vita release Toukiden Kiwami at 79,000.

Kadokawa Games’ Love Live game for PS Vita also opened at a healthy number, selling 60,000 units across all three of its SKUs.

    Neptuiia U did pretty good, I think…

    • Renaldi Saputra

34k is a very good number for the series

      • Elle

Yeah they probably broke even or made a profit with that.

        • Orichalon Hades

probably, CH usually has a low turning point for profits for their games.

    • Kayseur

Pretty much as good or slightly better as the other titles, they all did around the same in their first week. (25k-30k+)

    • Orichalon Hades

its a title from a series that (surprisingly) more popular on the West anyway.

      • Anime10121

You’d be surprised just how many Niche titles on average sell better in the west…

        • CirnoTheStrongest

Well, part of that is that the “west” comprises of SIGNIFICANTLY more people than Japan

          • Anime10121

Well of course it does, still doesnt change the fact that most folks dont know that…

            • CirnoTheStrongest

              Very true.

            • Renaldi Saputra

but, still Neptune series only sold high in the west with the very first game, the other sequel didn’t even sell well, even it went down drastically

    • fyi1191

Would probably be more if they include Iris Heart and PC.

  • Renaldi Saputra

and so youkai watch start to leave the 1st place.
well, medarot 8 sales are kinda bad
comparing to famitsu, toukiden was the 1st place and love live at 2nd place

    • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

Medarot sales is actually simply stable? like how Compile Heart game is simply selling the same amount to the same fanbase.

      • Renaldi Saputra

Comparing to medarot 7, this one is worse. Don’t know why…
Maybe is killed by youkai watch

  • LeBronista

For an expansion.. Toukiden Kiwami did good..

    • new_tradition

      I was thinking the same.

I’m wondering if savvy Japanese consumers knew to hold out for an expansion, or if the game was so good they bought it again?

      • LeBronista

I think it is the game.. previous expansion of games under the same genre didn’t fair well.. and i’m talking about ragnarok odyssey ace and soul sacrifice delta..

        • new_tradition

Interesting…I was actually gonna pass on Toukiden entirely when I get a Vita.

Partially because I don’t wanna buy a vanilla game when a expansion exists in Japan, but also because with Freedom Wars and hopefully Gods Eater Burst 2, I rather focus on fewer games of the “hunting” genre.

But if it’s that good, I might have to reevaluate my opinion…

C’mon Tecmo, be cool and bring the expansion over >:3

      • OverlordZetta

Or maybe Japanese consumers aren’t as stupid as Western ones about the whole “expansion” thing?

Most of these expansions are expansions in the first place because the changes couldn’t be added to the original game. Why cut yourself out of the original game when you could enjoy it AND the expansion later on? You’re giving up months to a year that you could be playing something over it being “vanilla” – that’s fucking ridiculous. If you want to play, play.

That’s far more logical that the Western “herp derp let’s kill sales and not buy games which will surely keep localizations coming” approach.

  • MitsukiIX

I cant believe Nep Ultimate trash fandisk edition sold decent.
the game has absolutely no challenge its too easy and can be beaten in 5 hours, Nep U and PP are the worst neptune games ever even Noire’s game is better.

    • 強大なサム(Mighty Sam)

You believe people won’t buy it when it has this:
      http://assets.vg247.com/current//2014/04/hyperdimension_neptunia.jpg

      • Land of Green Pasture

nope, ppl will still buy it, but ppl will buy two of this if they buy bullet girl…. but I guess COD fans here will have a good time with Bullet Girls :V

    • Bob Slim

Do you really think people buy these games for a challenge lol
      I did buy pp btw

    • Luna Kazemaru

bullet girls is selling soooo yeah not shocked

    • triggerx

noire game is better? pfft what weed are you smoking? it’s the worst srpg i ever play >.>”

      • OverlordZetta

Noire’s game is bad for a variety of reasons, but I doubt Sting made a bad SRPG.

  • http://www.talkcocksingsong.net/kernel/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/404-Error-Looks-like-You-have-Found-a-Dead-Link-Talk-Cock-Sing-Song-01.jpg Venom_Saiyan

Console market is still looking a bit dire (which is pushing it). The Handheld market is hanging strong. But it doesn’t help that the 3DS last year equal every platform right now.

Software is interesting, Hyrule Warriors took a nosedive (lowest debut of the warriors games), Toukiden Kiwami (80k/90k) did better than SS Delta (49k), both did well for expansions and Persona 4 is up there.

    • OverlordZetta

Delta didn’t get any marketing and people probably didn’t think it was worth getting again.

      • Orichalon Hades

yea, i was not even aware when it was released here even though i checked multiple game site + forums erryday. Only found out when it pop up on the PSN store.

        • OverlordZetta

Trust me when I say you aren’t even the tenth person I’ve heard say that in just the past two months.

      • http://www.talkcocksingsong.net/kernel/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/404-Error-Looks-like-You-have-Found-a-Dead-Link-Talk-Cock-Sing-Song-01.jpg Venom_Saiyan

        Well they were wrong!

        • OverlordZetta

          Amen to that.

  • 強大なサム(Mighty Sam)

Interesting, you can see a mathematical formula in the hardware sales in each week between Vita and 3DS,whereas the 3DS always sells nearly the double of the amount Vita sells.and it seems the PS4 sales are weaker than PS3’s this week.that’s worrying, to say the least.

    • Zackasaur

Not worrying at all. It was expected.

The console will pick up with Japanese games.

      • Aaal

I love this positive dreamer. Lol

  • Bob Slim

It looks like the games that sells the most in Japan are kid games

    • Manny Being Manny

Japan has a much younger gamer demographic than America, so thats not too much of a surprise. Theres more of a social stigma against playing games as an adult.

      • Budgiecat

Well Otaku and Hikikkomori certainly dont help avoid that stigma.

Japan has those issues to deal with, meanwhile we have our angry Feminazis, crap media and SJW hipster gamer issues to deal with :P

        • MrFinalgamer

And then theres Europe, master race!

          • Budgiecat

            you still have ‘chavs’ :3

    • British_Otaku

That is par for the course in any region. Games which reach people with free time and friends tend to do really well, though they have a hard time getting that market to begin with. Yokai Watch is the only game which made it in a long while. Otaku games outsold the likes of Gaist Crusher, Hero Bank, Gyrosetter and so on.

I’m sure Mushibugyo got outsold by The Wonderful 101.

      Pokemon does well worldwide.
      As does Call of Duty.

Ultimately both reach the same type of people.

  • BlueCereal

    Yukari’s boobs look bigger…

    • 強大なサム(Mighty Sam)

      Dat attention!

  • CirnoTheStrongest

And Bullet Girls is one of the few to sell a significant amount of its first-week sales the second week. Must be because of how good it is. I think they really marketed the thing wrong. It’s such an amazing game. Hopefully the sales keep up!

    • Luna Kazemaru

lol…or there is nothing really coming out people are willing to scrape that bottom of the bucket.

      • CirnoTheStrongest

        Uh…huh
Because Persona 4 AU, Toukiden Kiwami, etc are “nothing”
As much as it might shatter your world perspective, Bullet Girls is actually a great game. The marketing completely mislead people into thinking it was a straight-up ecchi-fest with no substance. Now that people have it, they’re telling others how good it is, and that results in much more sales, since these are likely the people who thought the game had nothing to it.

Heck, I didn’t think I’d be getting this great an experience from the game and bought it solely because I couldn’t get it off my mind, totally expecting no story and mediocre gameplay. Of which is a completely wrong descriptor of this game.

Really hoping they can turn this into a series!

        • Renaldi Saputra

honestly I will choose Senran Kagura beside of Bullet Girls, even though I don’t like SK too

          • RedSuisei

Even though you haven’t played any of both?

            • Renaldi Saputra

so I have to play both even though I only said based on how I look from people playing them?

              • RedSuisei

Not really, it just makes your opinions less credible.

                • Renaldi Saputra

I only judge from how fun it is when watching people playing it. I just don’t like bcos both are perv games for me. But for the fun, they’re different

                  • British_Otaku

You’ll be surprised. I don’t know much about Bullet Girls but Sernan Kagura tells some of the better stories with some of the better combat systems on the 3DS and Vita.

With Senran Kagura 2 especially, the mechanics are the most technical I’ve come across for the platform (other 3DS games like Gaist Crusher, E.X. Troopers and Attack on Titan are in the my library – the first two are better balanced but not as nearly technical).

It is pretty easy to play the games like any other action game for the most part provide you have at least a mild tolerance for the fanservice which is ingrained in the work. If you don’t I guess you may be missing out on most of the game mentioned on this site.

                    • Renaldi Saputra

That’s why I said I’d better choose SK rather than Bullet Girls bcos the fun is different, even though I don’t like the main concept, not the gameplay.

                      >Better combat
                      I agree, especially SV

                    • British_Otaku

I see, but Bullet Girls on paper doesn’t seem too different if it actually is a good third pan- person shooter. It doesn’t seem like it will be as good as E.X. Troopers, but at worst it may be a decent shooter with lots of clothing options.

    • Budgiecat

“Must be because of how good it is”

      I lol’d

      • Shippoyasha

Well, I wouldn’t say it’s great. But it’s certainly better than its sole fanservice premise makes it seem. If they tweak the AI and the overpowered rolling mechanic, it could actually become a great game. As weird as it is to say.

        • Budgiecat

Whats his name here (Mikuro?) already sold his copy after a week and uploaded gameplay showing how broken the game is. Saw 16 attempts to blow up a crate lol.
          Game is garbage.

          • Shippoyasha

Yeah it has its faults. I think it’s alright so far. It has its moments though again, it has some really big game balance issues. They better fix it if they make a sequel.

        • OverlordZetta

I’ve yet to see anything going for it in terms of gameplay. The visuals are fine, sure, but I’d like more than that..

          • Shippoyasha

It’s a fun game actually. Not the most amazing gameplay but it’s still pretty solid. Also it’s getting a balance patch soon.

  • Daniel Masterson

If only we could get awesome mass transit in the U.S much like japan we could get these portable games.

    • Peanut

And actually play them instead of driving (with rage) :)

  • Ksatmata

    PSP still selling

    • desponent

Well 11K is not too shabby for Japan software sales but certainly unsustainable if it was PSP only game.

    • Renaldi Saputra

      PSP still have games, yep.

  • Elle

Lord I want to import Toukiden so bad but will pray for a localization.

    • OverlordZetta

      KT won’t disappoint. Probably.

  • papermario

I wonder if Smash bros will have a longer reign at number 1 than Yokai Watch did. We will find out in under 2 weeks.

    • MyBodyIsReady

      It won’t, trust me.

    • Zackasaur

      lolol

      It won’t come close.

      • papermario

It might. I do not see any strong competition until Monster hunter

        • Zackasaur

It has no chance of matching Yokai Watch. xD

          • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

U must be underestimating Smash Brothers IP power in Japan here.

It had the strongest preorder power right now.

            • Zackasaur

Nope, I’m estimating as precisely as is possible. I never said that Super Smash Bros. for 3DS (such a dumb name…) would do badly in Japan, and I am well aware of its healthy pre-order numbers. However:

              1. No Smash Bros. game has ever done as well in Japan as Yokai Watch 2 is doing.

              2. Smash Bros. 3DS pre-order numbers are fine, but not keeping up with where Yokai Watch 2 was.

    • British_Otaku

Smash Bros is going to have more competition over the coming weeks, so it seems pretty unlikely. At the very least, it will outsell most games released last year and this year with time.

The marketing on the Japanese eShop implies that they are trying pretty hard for TV CMs. Pokemon will probably beat Smash Bros though in the short term… and long term.

      • papermario

        What competition?

        • British_Otaku

Exclusively focusing on 3DS games and ones released on the same week or afterwards, Tousouchuu (2 days before Smash, the game series tend to have long legs with installments selling hundreds of thousands of copies), Haikyuu 3DS (two weeks later, but anime games based on popular media reach into a similar market), Tenkai Knights (same), Majin Bone (same), Monster Hunter 4G (while it shares the New Nintendo 3DS launch date and limited edition which Smash Bros will have, this is the first Smash Bros killer – a month later), Pokemon (the second Smash Bros killer) and I would give an honourable mention to One Piece Super Grand Battle X as well.

The September to December period is packed with games which could slow the pace of Smash Bros. Of course, it will sell but you are asking which it will top charts for as long as Yokai Watch and as long as Monster Hunter and Pokemon aren’t too far with other games being pretty big as well. Not a chance.

If Nintendo’s aim was to see their game chart for months on end, they would release it during a dead month, but they want a period when people are playing their systems the most.

Sales slow down with time naturally and the 3DS will be stuffed with options.

          • papermario

None of those games will do anything. Anime games? come on lol. Monster Hunter is the only game to worry about.

            • British_Otaku

How much do you expect Smash Bros to sell first week?
Even if you were expecting a million seller right off the bat, having multiple games which are likely to climb beyond to 100K for multiple millions is a nail on the coffin (not for it doing well, but charting at 1st for a long time).

Yokai Watch 2 only lost this week as it had time to slow down and then a lot of games hitting 60K came around, if they released the same week as Yokai Watch 2, they wouldn’t be charting by now and the streak would continue till Monster Hunter/Smash Bros/Pokemon/notable licensed game.

By the time, those licensed games come out with up to and around 100K, that will be enough to stomp most of that week’s library aside from other games chipping at people’s interest in Smash Bros.

            • OverlordZetta

Even if they take away a little, they’ll take away.

Besides, Yokai Watch is only doing as well because of the anime.

    • OverlordZetta

It’ll be losing to Yokai Watch soon enough.

  • Thatguy

Something very wrong with list, where PSP game in top10.
…Though it’s good to me, because Toukiden is a good game and i want that expansion.

    • Budgiecat

Capcom wants that expansion too :P

  • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

TK is stuck supporting their PSP userbase

Notice how God Eater 2 Rage Burst isn’t on PSP

    • bloodiOS

Which is only logical since Sony ceased the production of the PSP. The PSP version of Toukiden Kiwami, on the other hand, was already in the works and was even publicly announced a couple months before the official cease of production of the system.

  • Stuart O’Quin

I thought Hyrule Warriors would bank a quarter million lifetime sales in Japan, at the very least. I was kind of hoping for a half a million. Looks like the end result is going to be somewhere closer to 150,000…

  • DarthBrian

    dat Yukari. <3

  • DarthBrian

So we won’t get Xbone sales till next week I suppose. I’m guessing it’ll be higher than PS4 sales but less than Wii-U sales.

EDIT: I will probably be wrong.

    :p

    • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

      Probably won’t break 2000

      • shogunknight

Nah, it will definitely pass 2k units. Dont forget the preorders

        • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Xbone is gonna go the same way X360 and Xbox before it did in Japan.

      • Zackasaur

It might not do so poorly on the first week… There are enough westaboos and Americans in Japan for the launch to be ahead of PS4/Wii U just this week.

But in the long run, yeah, Xbone is dead on arrival.

    • McPoo

Do you reckon that there’s much MS can do to help it succeed, or is it just the nature of the Japnese market?

      • DarthBrian

Well, the Kinect-less SKU would help it sell better because Kinect doesn’t work with a lot of the smaller room sizes in Japan or so I’ve heard.

OTOH, Microsoft don’t seem to be advertising much in Japan this time. So I think they’ve just given up to be quite honest.

  • desponent

Need Kiwami in english right now :(

    • Renaldi Saputra

      KOEI is your savior

  • Budgiecat

3DS sale should be dipping down since news of “New” 3DS no?

Or are consumers really out of the loop?

Cant blame em really. Horrible marketing tactics of Nintendo…

    • ( `Д´)ノ)`ν゜)

Maybe there’s no interest in the thing?

      • Budgiecat

        nnnnah

    • Zackasaur

Nintendo customers are, in aggregate (so certainly not true for all individuals), more out of the loop than their competition are.

      • Budgiecat

the probaly still will be even after it launches.

“um excuse me, do you have the new 3DS?”

“sure! here” *hands over a normal 3DS*

    • Peanut

I think the general consumer (NOT the hardcore gamer who is in the know, like ourselves) has no idea. That and Nintendo probably still wants to sell as much hardware as possible.

Once they start plastering the thing on billboards and trains in Tokyo, maybe?

With no release date for North America until 2015 (for instance), they probably don’t want newcomers waiting and not buying existing product.

    • OverlordZetta

Alternatively people want to buy the current models for resale later when some huge flaw of the new ones is discovered.

      • Budgiecat

thats really stretching for an answer lol

  • Ping92

    Pink ranger!

  • kurosan9712

    Love Live did well. Glad.

    • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

      Why is it good?

      • kurosan9712

Asking why is it good places quite a hard question.
It is good because it just is, I see no other reason.

As for sales, it probably is true enough, that fans bought all the 3 volumes(I didn’t have enough money, so only one for me).

To be honest, until this summer, I considered Love Live to be as bad as other idol franchises(except iDOLM@STER and some others). I was refusing to watch the anime intentionally, but in the end I gave up, watched, and understood it was quite good.
Escalating further, I downloaded LLSIF(android/iOS game), and with that I just couldn’t skip the Vita game.

“It is good because it just is”

          I lol’d

Reasonable, some many fans in there could have bought all the 3 volumes since the fanatics are so many

7 weeks of battle with Yukai Watch 2 for the #1 spot, finally meets its end.

  • British_Otaku

Yokai Watch 2 lost this week, but it may top next week even with Dragon Quest X on the 3DS (since it released on three other platforms already) and Gaist Crusher God (okay I’m the only guy who bought it but I think it will do decent or at least better than the original).

Won’t be too surprised if Yokai Watch 2 is topping charts around Christmas and New Years as well.

    • Renaldi Saputra

      I don’t think so
DQ X is online game, sales won’t be that well. Same like MH Frontier G

      • British_Otaku

Dragon Quest X may not sell millions like the main installments, it has sold numbers which would easily chart first here for the Wii or still be competitive otherwise from the Wii U.

It could be in the top places with ease, especially if the highest we expect from the others is between 40K and 60K.

        • Renaldi Saputra

I think that next week youkai watch 2 will be the #1 again with DQ X on #2

      • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

I heard DQ already faces shortages all around here.

Only Pre-order is able to get the game now.
