Square Enix considering Dragon Quest MMORPG for Sony platform?

Dragon Quest X

Dragon Quest X producer Yosuke Saito has said he wants to bring the game to PlayStation 4.

During the fan questions segment of this morning’s Dragon Quest X TV Niconico broadcast, one user asked if Square Enix would bring Dragon Quest X to PS4. Saito replied that he wants to put it out.

The online-only Dragon Quest game first launched for Wii in 2012, before coming to Wii U and PC in 2013, and 3DS (via cloud-based streaming) earlier this month.

I think they should follow through.

  • DarthBrian

If they did this, Dragon Quest VIII would *still* be the best looking Dragon Quest game ever made.

    • Zackasaur

DQVIII in HD on mobile? :3

DQXI on PS4 would of course take the cake… Though I would argue that DQ Heroes looks nicer than DQVIII.

  • shogunknight

They are considering it probably because of how good FFXIV is doing on the console

  • SuperLuigi

Before you guys get too excited remember this is the MMO that we can’t even play. Still won’t hit the west.

    • Zackasaur

PS4 would be by miles the most likely scenario for localisation.

      • Orichalon Hades

even if its not localized, can’t we still play the game with a JP Acct though?

        • commodorewheeler

I’d imagine so, but wouldn’t you also have to deal with all that subscription stuff in Japanese as well? They might not be willing to bill credit cards outside of Japan.

          • Orichalon Hades

paypal? i dunno. I know some people here that plays PSO2 with no problem, so i would think they would face the same problem.

            • Christopher Taylor

PSO2 is free to play thus once you do make an account *Made even harder to do now due to the captcha in, I think Hiragana? They placed into it…took me 3 hours to make an account for my girlfriend* you are pretty much done there. Also PSO2 has a large fan-translation team that is always constantly translating, priority first, Story, Menu Changes, Items, side quests, npc dialogue in that order of importance. PSO2 however gets content updates more rapidly than DQX does. So if the same kind of fan-translation effort went into DQX, its likely the team could keep over 80 percent of the game translated. Where as for PSO2, they can only manage a rate of 55-70 percent. Their is a guy named Aeana or some such on the Dragons Den forums doing some translations right now, and discovered that the games coding and scripts, has alot more room and freedom to work with than initially thought. So now he is trying to put together a few programs to help those who are willing to put in time to collaborate and create a fan-translation.

If anyone can spread the word for this, and go to the Woodus, Dragons Den forums and seek this programmer out. Please, help him if you have any relevant skills that can go towards translation efforts if you are a fan of DQX. In all honesty? If a full blown translation effort the same as PSO2 has become a reality for DQX, it will push SE further into releasing the game to western countries.

        • Zackasaur

          Probably, with some workarounds.

But I would personally never consider it anyway.

      • SuperLuigi

I figure pc would though in all seriousness. I am all for us getting this game but I have my doubts.

        • Zackasaur

Nah, PC games on average sell less units than console versions. That is especially true with Japanese games, as well as with old console/handheld-oriented franchises. Dragon Quest is both of those things

Plus, as an MMO, there is more competition on PC.

So a smaller interest level combined with higher competition makes PC the wrong choice for this. That’s why the PC version that already exists isn’t localised.

Now, PS4 could potentially work out for them. And if the PS4 makes them justify localisation, also bringing along the PC version would probably be a pretty obvious bonus. The same might even apply to a Wii U tagalong. MAYBE 3DS, but lower handheld priority, more handheld casuals, and the issues with streaming make it the least viable.

          • Christopher Taylor

This is true, if the case was the game required a substantial PC to play. PCs can be expensive, and your constantly paying money to upgrade them depending on what routes you take with your PC. However, DQX can be run comfortable, on max settings, any PC you slap together with 2 or so gigs of ram and a 50 dollar Video card. I could make a rig cheaper than the PS4 or the Xbone that can run DQX at max settings. Thus, that means that most any laptop or PC created 4-6 years ago from now can run DQX, long as it has enough ram, at least 2 gigs, and a GPU or Onboard Video chip.

            • Zackasaur

Oh, I’m not worried about a substantial number of people being able to run it.

              I’m worried about them bothering.

    • commodorewheeler

FFXIV’s success might entice them to bring it over on a Sony platform though.

  • Chaos King

I would rather see a full-fledged offline Dragon Quest game like Dragon Quest VIII for PS4.

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

Dragon Quest XI is in development. We don’t know what platform it’ll release for, but given that Horii said he wants the game back on the big screen, and the recent DQH announce, PS4 is a big possibility.

      • commodorewheeler

Has DQXI been confirmed to be single player offline?

        • Budgiecat

I highly doubt it will be an MMO. Back to back DQ MMO’s? lol no.

And I’m sure Horii still remembers that famous elderly Japanese actress/hardcore DQ fan who cursed out DQ X on live air….:P

        • Zackasaur

No, but it’s not a difficult assumption to make. Even if the MMO model is a success for DQ, they won’t release MMOs in the series back-to-back. Look at the time between FFXI and FFXIV.

    • FlareKnight

Pretty much this. I don’t car what they do with DQX, I just wish we could get another game like DQ8 on a console.

  • desponent

    Is this a (reverse) flag?

Oh wait, it’s only for DQX, whatever then.

  • Dick Mountainjoy

Nah, would rather have Heroes and Single Player XI, and none of that custom party crap like 9, I want heroes with story and character development.

    • desponent

I agree with you but to be fair, DQ was never strong on character development.

      • Dick Mountainjoy

Sure, but Jessica was far more interesting than say… Dickbutt 1-4, or whatever you 9 team was called.

        • desponent

Absolutely, but she needs more backstory and sidequest.

    • Zackasaur

      These aren’t mutually exclusive.

We can get DQ Heroes, DQXI, and DQX on PS4. DQX wouldn’t hinder either of the other two. If anything, it would just help to further build the audience. :P

      • Dick Mountainjoy

Somehow I doubt a subscription fee paygate will grow the DQ audience in the West.

FF can get away with it because it’s the top dog of JRPG’s over here.

        • Zackasaur

It wouldn’t be so much about growing the DQ fandom as (1) pleasing a very dissatisfied group of people and (2) helping more of them to move to PS4 ahead of DQXI.

          • Dick Mountainjoy

Well first of all, seeing as the PS4 is a huge success a Subscription MMO might not be the best way to re-introduce the franchise to a playerbase that’s been ignored since PS2

Secondly, Heroes is the much more accessible and affordable option for expanding and reintegrating the DQ fans before XI, don’t forget how mixed FF11 was received, and how poorly the original FF14 was viewed.

This is a market where even a Elder Scrolls MMO can fail, and a Star Wars one can fail twice.

            • Christopher Taylor

The Elder Scrolls MMO failed because Zenimax put more money into all the Hollywood VA’s they hired, than they did in fixing all the balancing issues, bugs, class breaking bugs, graphic anomalies, game stopping bugs in quests and missions, the damn game engine itself. They pretty much used the PC players to ALPHA TEST a released product, so they can try to get things fixed via all our complaints, feedback and effort, for the console versions. Which last I read, they are still having a hard time getting to work and constantly delaying.

DQX is similar to FFXI in the way content is handled and alot of mechanics. Minus the need of having 6-18 other people who works part time jobs or is in a position to play 80 hours a week to get anything done. Its a game very old school mmo-players like myself would enjoy.

Its a nearly infinite Dragon Quest adventure that will not stop until the devs stop putting out content for it, which wont be for another 8 or so years since they promised to release more store, more quests, more features, more everything every 6-8+ weeks via version updates. Every time they do a version update, more content is added.

That is why a subscription, which is about ten dollars in Yen per month right now. If your a weekend player about 1.50 for the weekend *Friday, Saturday and Sunday* or I believe 6 dollars for 2 weeks, yes they actually have these kind of subscription models. They did it to help fit people’s lifestyles and save money. But you are paying these subscriptions for 1. Constant new content updates. 2. Stable servers. 3. RMT and spammer control. 4. Customer service. 5. Quality events.

People who understand all this. gladly pay a sub fee. And please dont say F2P is the way to go, F2P is now starting to decline, since its absolutely full of problems and more often than not, you end up paying more for F2P games than you do for P2P, due to the nature of how F2P games are, once they rope you in enough, you will get addicted and WANT to buy the cash shop items just so you can keep up with your friends, specially if it is a P2W game *Pay to win*.

  • https://twitter.com/RyoonZ RyoonZ

DQ is back to PlayStation baby!

    • 罪罰

      Well yeah, therea dq warriors.

  • TheDevil

Did they already fix the 3DS version?
‘Cause if they didn’t, I’d focus on that instead of porting the game to another platform.

    • Zackasaur

Completely unrelated… A PS4 team would work on the game code and 1080p assets, while the 3DS people figure out text size and cloud issues.

The two developments aren’t mutually exclusive.

      • TheDevil

Yeah. For a moment there I forgot it’s Squeenix we’re talking about who actually has the resources to pull that off. :P

Oh, and just to clarify I’m not against the port. Even though MMOs aren’t my thing, if more people get to play it then great. I’d just rather have DQ XI over a port to a 2 year old game.

        • Zackasaur

Yeah, SE can pretty much do what they want. lulz In all honesty, the core DQX devs probably never touched the 3DS version. The 3DS version is just a stream of an edited PC version running as a test for SE’s fancy new cloud servers.

I have mixed feelings about DQX (I’m not a big MMO guy, though I love FFXIV, and I think DQX is kind of ugly…), but I would support/play it on PS4 if it got localised (finally). And the PS4 version would probably be the pathway to localisation. If not that, then nothing would convince SE to localise.

But I’m totally with you on wanting DQXI. And I’m going to buy Heroes when it gets localised, as well.

      • Guest

I guess there’s no solution to that doomed 240p resolution.

        • Zackasaur

Yeah… I cannot fathom why anyone would want to play that. >_>

  • miyamoto

Enix should bundle DQ VI, VII, VIII, IX and X into a HD Remastered Collection on PS3 & PS4 instead of just mobile.

    • Kuro-Law

      *Vita.

  • dark-kyon

square enix producer want to put a MMO game in a console with decent online infrastructure.good idea.

  • PrinceHeir

Final Fantasy XIV ARR AND Dragon Quest X MMO all in one system O__O

Put in Phantasy Star Online 2(LOL SEGA) and a new Monster Hunter Frontier game on PS4, then it would be a MMO paradise ^^

  • Zangetsu777

LMAO! I knew it. XD. the Wii U version Alone wouldn’t sell that well in The West. The only way it will succeed in The West is if they make it Multiplatform.

I predict it will come out for PS4, Wii U, & PC in the West. With Conjoined Servers. Like they did with FF14 & FF11.

  • Pyrofrost

FFXIV: ARR has been great for PS4, I can see why they would want to put DQX there. And at this point, I’m more interested in playing this game than I am ARR (anymore) anyway. Hopefully they can make their goal here happen. ^_^

  • PhoenixAutomatic~♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪~

Not hyped about this but yeah, would want a DQ MMO on the PS4.

  • Budgiecat

    no no no

Just localize DQ Heroes, DQ VII 3DS, both DQM for 3DS and make DQ XI for PS4 and localize it please. Stop being dumb

    • CirnoTheStrongest

I’m agreeing with Budgie….the apocalypse is coming o_o

  • http://twitter.com/M_Demolish Demolish

    2 dragon quest on ps4 I’m dream?

    • Pyrofrost

This would be a 3rd, considering DQHeroes and DQXI are also in the works ;)

I get your point though, and I’m excited just like you ^_^

  • badmoogle
  • Mikail

Yeah of course from here on sales will be on the second priority money talk here, SE is still able to to demand money on SCEJ for exclusivity, but if Playstation brand is able to pull big sales with DQ Heroes and Holiday sales is up. Yup 1000% this games will comes to PS4 with or without money hating from Sony,

  • http://Gematsu.com Vayne

A hope to get this game in the west yet?

    • Remlot

Keep that hope extremely close to the ground.

  • -Misaki-

Not a fan of DQ, but many games will be worth the try if on PS brand, no bias intended but I indeed will try the games on PS brand for many reasons.

    • Budgiecat

I’m playing DQ VIII right now. Awesome game you should play it

  • NessWonderSprite

How about instead of porting more DQ games, they localize the ones out now? DQ XI at this rate will go unlocalized on Wii U/PS3.

    • Budgiecat

      Wii U? lol

    • Zackasaur

A PS4 version of DQX would make localisation of the game viable.

And if we see DQXI on PS4 as most fans expect and even more fans want, then localisation would be obvious.

DQ games just didn’t see the same kind of western sales when they had their budgets/aspirations cut in favour of Nintendo handhelds. And then of course DQX is an MMO on platforms where it would hardly sell in the US… Just a huge mess.

DQ could sell again in the west on the right platform.

      • NessWonderSprite

DQ IX is the best selling DQ game ever. DQ IX is the highest selling DQ game in the West. Want to try again that you did not think western sales were good?

Get back to reality. It is a nice place.

        • Zackasaur

          lol You’re funny.

DQIX was the moment when the series bombed in regards to future audience. It was brutally disappointing, and significant interest was lost after that.

Now they have to make up for it, and making DQX a thus-far-Japan-only MMO for less popular platforms except for an annoying stream-based version for 3DS wasn’t really a good step forward.

So now they’re putting real effort into the series with DQXI and DQ Heroes.

          • NessWonderSprite

Please tell me your just kidding with me? DQIX was one of the most critically acclaimed DQ’s and it sold the best.

DQ has sold INCREDIBLY well on 3DS. So much so the series has seen 5 entries in less than 4 years.

They are putting real effort with DQ Heroes? A game that looks like it needs about 5 more years in dev? You are a riot.

  • Jackie Chun

this might be the only way for DQX to get localized, cause Nintendo has the US publishing rights for the Wii & 3DS versions and they sure as hell don’t care

  • Elle

And it STILL won’t come over here but at least it would be on a region free console. *side eying you Nintendo*

Edit: You know…I’m wondering did SCEJ finally pull out the cheque book? They payed vita dust.

  • Aldridge517

I also want a Dragon Quest game on PlayStation. Dragon Quest VIII was forever and a day ago.

  • Guest

DQ XI for PS4 confirmed. LMAO. Everything revolves around PS4 even DQ X.

    • NessWonderSprite

      I know right? lol

  • Elvick

One step closer to me wanting to play it then.

  • notcarolkaye

Why would this even be a discussion. Of course it should be on PS4. THERE’S A PC VERSION! For fucks sake, do the simple port.

    • Pyrofrost

You have the right idea, sir. They can pretty much cut and paste to the game. The PS4 supports DX11, and has the hardware to run the PC version out of the box pretty much.

      Look at these specs:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 2.0GHz or AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+
      RAM: 2 GB
VGA: Nvidia GeForce GT 340 or AMD Radeon X1900 GT
      OS: Wiindows XP
      DX: DirectX 9
Hard drive: 7 GB free space

The PS4 could run this fucking game in sleep mode!

      • Tyrant Soul

You learn something new every day.I was not aware the ps4 supported DX11.Thank you for the info

        • Marco Tinè

It’s not exactly DX11, but a proprietary API able to mimic DX features very well, in a fast and efficient way. And there’s much more to these libraries, as they’re pretty “down to the metal”: programmers have easy and complete access to the hardware, so they’ll be able to implement DX12 level features in the future on PS4.

DX12 will be a PC/Xbox One only technology, and Microsoft’s console will certainly benefit from its implementation. But the flexibility of the PS4 graphics API allows Sony’s engineers – and third party studios as well – to create new functions at any time. This is one of the main reasons why the PS4 is so popular among coders: they can freely tinker with its innards.

          • Tyrant Soul

That was very informative thank you.I was wondering about Xbox Ones implementation of DX12.Glad to hear that ps4 will be able to match it somewhat.I own both systems and I find the easier the systems are to develop for the better the games that are released due to the studios not having to fight the machine to get it to run.

  • TheMechaEngineer

What a coincidence we do too!

  • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

It would make sense. If they bring it over for PC and PS4 and let them play together just like FF14 ARR. Sega should do the same thing with PSO 2 and… wait… Sega? Sega? Bahahaha, oh man, I really crack myself up sometimes. Sega? Really? hahaha… I’m going to go cry now. =(

    • Tyrant Soul

It bugs me far more than it should that we no longer get Yakuza games.I really enjoyed those games.

  • RoyalR R.M

    Please, so much Yes.
Make it happen. This will help me stop thinking about White knight Chronicle 3.

  • http://hatintime.com/ ShadowFang

The more platforms this is on, the better the chances of ONE of them reaching our shores. Eventually they’ll have to be like, “Well THIS platform’s install base is big enough that we should reach enough gamers to make a profit”. Especially with the success they’ve had with Realm Reborn.

Not to mention, with Dragon Quest Heroes on the way for Playstation, and DQXI most likely heading to PS Platforms as well since it’s going to be a console game and Sony’s have the best install base, only makes sense to get more DQ on PS. Do it, Square.

    • NessWonderSprite

DQ X was on Wii U, Wii U has the biggest install base in Japan of any new console which is the only thing that has mattered in 25 years of the series main installments

  • Victor Wesker

I hate online only games. Online mode should be optional. I’ll never pay for online only game which cannot be played offline.

    • Christopher Taylor

Good news, their are solo servers for mmo-phobic players like yourself in DQX.

      • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Ruggarell Rugga

It’s not being phobic. He has a preference which you should respect. Some of us adults prefer single player.

        • Christopher Taylor

Good news. You can play DQX in the Solo servers like it was single player. Which means DQX is better than your average DQ game. Due to constantly updated content.

  • NessWonderSprite

I will believe it when I see it that they port X again. What SE “WANTS” to do, they hardly ever do.

  • Punkindrublic1

I would just love it if they Remastered all the dragon warriors from 1-4 I would even be happy as a pig in shit just to see those in HD. I loved those games. Haha anyone remember Taloon and his henchman XD
