Next issue of Dengeki PlayStation includes trial version.

Disgaea 5

Disgaea 5, announced for PlayStation 4 at this week’s SCEJA Press Conference, will have the greatest volume in the series yet, this week’s Dengeki PlayStation reveals.

The amount of characters that can be displayed on-screen has seen a significant increase thanks to PlayStation 4, jumping from 10 on PS3 to 100 on PlayStation 4. There will be new systems, too.

According to Nippon Ichi Software president Sohei Niikawa, they thought about making the game multi-platform with PlayStation 3, but wanted to make something that can only be done on PlayStation 4.

The game’s story is themed around the concept of “revenge.” Dengeki PlayStation introduces the first three characters this week:

  • Kiria (voiced by Mamoru Miyano) – The protagonist. A young demon boy who swears revenge on the “Demon Emperor Void Dark.”
  • Seraphine (voiced by Sarah Emi Bridcutt) – The heroine. The sheltered princess and daughter of “Gorgeous Underworld”‘s demon king.
  • Usaria (voiced by Satomi Akesaka) – The demon king of “Rabbit Rabbit World,” cursed to go berserk if she does not eat curry.

But perhaps the biggest news, the next issue of Dengeki PlayStation will include a product code to download a trial version of Disgaea 5.

Disgaea 5 is due out for PlayStation 4 in Japan in spring 2015. The standard edition will cost 7,776 yen and the download edition 6,171 yen. A limited edition will cost 11,016 yen. A first-print limited edition will include a Niitengo Usaria and Yellow Prinny, art book, soundtrack CD, and downloadable content.

Development is currently 60 percent complete.

Thanks, Games Talk and Sokuho@Hokanko.

Honestly this worries me. Are they going to ditch 2D with this as well?

    • OverlordZetta

Probably. It’s cheaper and they already did for the new Paradox title.

I really hope they don’t though.

      • Elvick

If they do, let’s at least hope it’s not done like the new Paradox. It looks awful IMO. Well, not awful… But in comparison to the first it’s a step down and looks cheap.

If it could look at least like Tales of Vesperia, that’d be dope.

        • Mikail

          or Guilty Gear Xrd XD

    • Manny Being Manny

I hope not. That Paradox titles 3d models look terrible.

    • greenreaper

If they do, the only other alternative I’d want them to try using are cell-shaded models. Those usually translate well for anime/manga style because they blur the line between 2D and 3D.

      • Elvick

Totally agree. If they do go 3D, I hope it is cellshaded at least. The art is really nice for the game. Not sure how NIS would do with some hq 3D. New territory. I definitely don’t want it to look like the new paradox game with chibi models

  • Duc PC-QB

    So the Ps3 can’t handle 100 characters ?

    • Zackasaur

Maybe not with their inefficient engine? xD

      • Mar Mar

PhyreEngine is what they use … according to this.

        • Zackasaur

Ah, thanks! So it’s not the engine’s fault.

      • 罪罰

        Sony made engine, bu buh.

        • Zackasaur

Oh, they use Phyre? Actually a great engine…

I guess they’re just not very talented programmers. Or they’re liars. :P

    • Anime10121

Dem hd sprites demand POWAH!!! :V

  • Elle

  • PrinceHeir

    Gonna be godly!!!

  • Kuro-Law

    awwww yhhhh

  • Six

Something that can only be done on PS4 until they port it to Vita.

    • refrain

I really want them to but I wonder if the Vita can handle that

      • Hexodious

They will probably just remove the said feature what they’re going to do on the PS4, if it comes to the Vita. It’ll probably be at least 4-5 years at least, as we still need to get the Vita port of DD2. Or they will port it to the Vita’s successor.

    • DesmaX

      More like the Vita sucessor.

It’s not like Disgaea 3 was released on the PSP

      • OverlordZetta

        >Vita successor
        That’s rather optimistic of you.

        • desponent

Haha, yeah, I have Vita and enjoy gaming on it but realistically the chance for it successor is miniscule.

Uhhhhhhhh….how does one import Dengeki Playstation Magazine? o_O

    • GibbRS

It’s been a while, but I’m pretty sure amazon.co.jp lets you import books/magazines from Japan, and they sell Dengeki Playstation magazines. They won’t let USA people buy video games, but books seem to be fair game.

Actually, Amazon just put up a preorder for the new Dengeki Playstation magazine. I don’t know if this is the right one or not, as it has no picture. It cost around $7 for the magazine, plus $12 or so shipping to get it to the states, just for reference. You also need to know a decent amount of Japanese just to place the order, but it does work (I ordered one, hopefully it’s the right issue, haha).

If you live near a Kinokuniya U.S. location, you can pick it up there: http://www.kinokuniya.com/us/index.php/fho003

  • DesmaX

Man, I hope they’ll increase the party cap then

    • DarthBrian

That would unbalance the game more than it’s already unbalanced. :p

  • EX+

60 percent done and coming in Spring? Wow.

  • MrKappa

A revenge theme huh? Let’s hope these demons actually act like demons then.
I know Disgaea has become known for its comedy but I hope they balance it out again instead of having a million 4th wall and reference jokes and ignore story events because it was a joke.

    • nekolife

I hope that unfunny Axel is gone for good…

    • OverlordZetta

So you want a Disgaea game that is nothing like a Disgaea game at all. That makes sense.

  • Jay

I just hope they use some of that power to make really detailed backgrounds… I’m not sure how 100 characters is going to work out, but I’m looking forward to finding out.

  • Budgiecat

    2D sprites confirmed

    • nekolife

    • kao

Knowing NIS it’s more than likely that they’ll just stick to the 2D again but I actually hope they can upgrade to 3d sprites. Idk why so many disgaea fans hate the idea of 3ds sprites so much though..

      • xXDGFXx

It’d be pretty interesting if they used 3D models. Of course, that’s if they can get them to have the same quality as 2D sprites.

      • OverlordZetta

Because they’re cheap and look bad?

        Not rocket science.

        • desponent

Wow really? You ever look at Gust’s stuff?

          • Michael Harrison

Ar Tonelico Qoga had 3d characters, and I thought they were less expressive than the sprites from Ar Tonelico 2.

            • desponent

Why do you pick their earliest attempt at 3D?

Look at what they’re making now, look at the current Atelier and Ar no Surge’s 3D model and tell me that they look less expressive than the sprite on AT2 with straight face.

              • Michael Harrison

I used AT3 because it was the 3d NiS game I was most familiar with at the time of making that comment.

Anyway, I just don’t think NiS do 3d models very well. I looked at footage at both of those games and they’re just as stiff looking as AT3 to me. Especially in Ar No Surge where they use the 3d models for the conversation scenes. It looks terrible with their blank inexpressive eyes and lazy lip flaps.

Are you going to tell me that this: http://youtu.be/IRyyxW5s-XM?t=6m5s

                Looks better than this:

I’d much rather them go the BlazBlue route than them use those lifeless 3d models that are just barely clawing their way out of the uncanny valley… at least the 2d spites don’t make me shudder with their off beat stares.

      • desponent

        Narrow mindedness.

      • Budgiecat

        Or GG Xrd: Sign route

    • Michael Harrison

There is no need for 3d sprites because in the end all they’ll be doing with them is trying to emulate the expressiveness of the 2d ones. 2d sprites are just aesthetically pleasing and you can impose the art style easier upon them.

If they were 3d sprites with an isometric view, we’d just see the top of the characters heads all the time.

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Disgaea 5 now with a level cap of 99,999

now we need a PS4 entry of Soul Nomad.

    Sarah Emi Bridcutt

Oh boy!, I haven’t heard her voice since Mondaiji-tachi :X

    • desponent

She’s on Rail Wars as the tsundere red hair boobs.

      • xXDGFXx

        No she’s not.

        • desponent

Welp you’re right, I thought that was her voice.

Pretty sure the screenshot shown on the right page is of Disgaea 5. Headshot in the image seems to be that of the protag.

    • Jay

Nice find. I wonder how much bigger the map sizes will be…
