I wanna see that demo on psn

  • AlphaSixNine

Kinda hoping they also announce the US release date alongside the JP one.

  • badmoogle

The pop up is kinda bad but man i LOVE the exploration potential this game has.

I wish they brought this game for PS4 as well.

  • vishmarx

do we have a single direct feed HD video?
potato vids are driving me nuts

    • Elvick

The second one really annoyed me, it’s like… move your mouse bro.

  • 罪罰

Announcing the annoucement of the release date. YEAH.

Love seeing some of the refinements made to this engine. It’s not really what a 2014 production should or could be, but it’s a nice step up from the last few Tales’ games. The huge new field maps are so much nicer – playing through Xillia 2 right now, I’m reminded of just how annoying it is to play through segmented maps. I love exploring, and it looks like Namco Tales Studio finally learned some streaming tech tricks to load larger areas to do just that :)

The battles on the field are also super welcome, and long past due.

Glad to know we’re gonna see more at TGS :D

  • Elvick

I really like what they’re doing, but I don’t think they’re doing enough to make it work. I mean, they’re trying to make it more seamless, but they still have the Result screen. Which is the complete opposite of seamless. Sure you can hide loading behind it (if necessary, though if it is necessary… then it’s not seamless either it’s just an illusion of it), but it’s just an obstacle preventing you from continuing.

JRPGs in general should try to get rid of those. I loved that Ni no Kuni got rid of waiting around for chests to open and the dialog to pop before being able to get back into exploring (few exceptions). And I loved that White Knight Chornicles didn’t make you sit through loading screens to enter and leave buildings in town.

That type of stuff is what JRPGs should be improving on. That’s natural improvements on the standard formula that should’ve become standard ages ago. Yet they’re like foreign ideas that no one seems to think of. Even though it would vastly improve the game in a simple way. Like I said, I like what this is trying to do. But the more ‘free’ some aspects become, the more restricting other will feel.

They could totally revamp the Result Screen so it loads up while you’re free to move and dialog can still occur while you move around. I know lots of people like the dialog between characters after battles, myself included (aside from the 100th time you’ve heard them ;3), so removing it outright would kind of remove a big part of what we expect from a Tales game and what helps set it apart.

    • gulabjamal

I do like the results screen personally, especially the dialog. As long as we can click X or O to skip it quickly and the game resumes without delay then that would be perfect. I’m playing Xillia 2 right now and the transition time is the shortest I’ve ever seen from result screen to game so I believe they’ll be sure to carry that into Zestiria as well.

Also LOL about Queen Brahne in that gap. Maybe that map location is adjustable like in FFXIV

      • Elvick

        I hope it’s moveable, because I really can’t stand it where it is. Maybe it’s for smaller tvs or something, but I don’t like it. D;

I don’t mind the information, I just think it’s counter productive to keep it the way it is if they want things to be seamless. So they should adjust it to fit with the rest of the stuff they’re trying to do.

The fewer roadblocks we have between us and gameplay, the more we notice the roadblocks that remain. It really highlights those moments where you can’t control something.

Having faster results, and being able to skip is better than nothing of course. But I think they could get rid of the old ‘static’ way completely without losing any of the benefits (the results [duh], character interaction)

      • Samsara09

well, there is no way to implement grade system without it.They could try,but most would ignore it if it were too discreet.people would do bad in battle and by new game + wouldn’t notice they had negative grade, lol.

besides, end battle quotes. There is no way we will get them if there is no screen.

    • Budgiecat

I still feel some kinda illusion is going on because only one member follows you on the field.

Maybe if this were on PS4, your whole team could be following you on the field…

  • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

    Added two event scenes.

  • CeroSuerte

Within 12 months of that date the english one should be out,.
But man that battle looks messy..

    • Zackasaur

They are aiming for closer international launches.

  • KingNigma

With all that going on in that battle there was surprisingly very little comboing. Also that open space :O

    • Samsara09

well, this looks like the beginning of the game.We all know that by endgame there are infinite ways to make combos…
hell, those HP values are too high.Well, those artes look like they are from the beginning.

  • Samsara09

so,an announcement of an announcement? This sounds familiar, although namco had the balls to give us some sweets…and the wait is just 3 weeks, lol.

    • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

Still wish it was gonna b worldwide at least. But this is still good.

      • Samsara09

well, jump is a Japanese magazine,so we won’t be getting the western release date now.Well, namco can announce it whenever they want…

        • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

At least they’re really moving the game along. It looks done. When I look at it and then back at Xillia 2 I do feel like X 2 was full washed-out art in cutscenes. The start of the game is this cave, the line work of the characters looked blurred. But maybe that was an art choice. Here, I’m not sure what they’re doing for. Is it the same as Vesperia art/graphic style?

    I hate this mini map.

  • Budgiecat

I dont understand why RPG’s, especially action RPG’s, still feel the need to show damage numbers flash all over the screen. Is this a math test or a game? the frantic multiple actions are distracting enough…

    • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Umm Diablo 3 has the same thing

It also tells you how effective skills are, basic rpg features

      • Budgiecat

        aaaand so?

        • novurdim

          So it’s pretty convenient.

          • Budgiecat

            no its distracting and cumbersome

            • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Why are you complaining about it?

            • novurdim

              No, it’s not.

        • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

You make a good point sometimes. But you often show up in a article and say the opposite of what everyone else thinks. If you’re not a troll, say something in a non-confrontational way once in a while. Make a liar out of me.

    • vertical09

      I like numbers.
      Stop bullying me :(

On the serious side: Pretty sure its just there because it’s a staple of RPG’s alone with adding to the sense of progression.
I know I at least feel like I’m getting somewhere when my 70 damage turns to 1000.

      • Budgiecat

It’s easier viewed in turn based battles.

But looks more like a mess in chaotic fast paced real time battles

    • Samsara09

    • KingNigma

I like to know how much damage I’m dealing in comparison to other party members/equipment/skills etc. It’s not totally useless to me.

    • 罪罰

It also annoys me, it ruins the look.

    • Elle

I like thw option to turn it off in some games.

  • Elle

I feel like this game isn’t being rushed out the door like Xillia 1. Can’t wait. December would be nice.

  • PrinceHeir

Wtf why are you still using Windows Media Player when playing videos?!?!

Get K-lite Codec Pack or something please!

    • 罪罰

      r u serious m8

      • PrinceHeir

Lol it’s pretty good for playing ADV/VN JPN games since it has codecs for the games as well.

Not sure about CCCP. I used to use that back then and it crashed a lot.

  • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

This is good. Some serious good things are coming. I wish I could get this on PS4 digitally though. Can’t wait for this game. It’s gonna be big on exploration and seems like a decent cast. I hope they went back to Abyss and Veeperia style and let you do lots of mystics in a row.

  • 永次

    Looks worse than 2008s RPGs…

    • Elle

Budgets fell off a cliff after 2008.

      • 永次

        For Bandai-Namco? No.

        • http://hatintime.com/ ShadowFang

Well, it’s probably a time issue then.

Hasn’t the Tales team been kinda swamped with yearly releases since about then? Tales of Vesperia, Dawn of the New World, Hearts/Hearts R, (I think I’m forgetting something), Graces, Graces F, Xillia, Xillia 2, Zestiria now… plus the localization work for all of those…. PLUS the mobile and handheld spinoffs/ports (Abyss 3D, Tales of Reva Unitia, Tactics Union, etc.)…

I mean, the last time they got to actually engineer something from scratch was probably 2006. It’s the Madden of Namco’s lineup.

It’s amazing it looks as good as it does, when you think about how little time they have to iterate on their tech. And you can definitely see that there – they tweaked the Xillia engine to handle much larger spaces now. An important thing to focus on in the 2 days they probably had to work on it xD

But yeah, it looks like they’re going to be dealing with iterative, little tweaks from game-to-game until Namco cools down on Tales releases…

Don’t get me wrong. I’m hoping Hideo Baba and the team gets a break and then gets to tackle their next gen game right. I really want Tales of PS4 to at least look as good as this, myself:

          • 永次

No, Tales of series have a lot of Developers.
Vesperia was made by Team Symphonia
            Graces by Team Destiny
Hearts by Team Destiny + Team Symphonia
Graces f is just a port with new content
Hearts R by 7th Chord (like Innocence R)
Innocence was made by Alfa System
            Tempest by Dimps
Xillia by Team Destiny + Team Symphonia (now Bandai-Namco Studio)
Xillia 2 is just a reciclyng Xillia plus new improvements, the work is minimal.
Spin-offs are made by developers like Alfa System (Radiant Mythology series, Narikiri Dungeon, PSP ports like Tales of Destiny 2…), Mobile spin-offs are made by Jupiter, KLab, Akatsuki…, Tales of VS. is made by Matrix Software…
Is not a time issue, because since Tales of Xillia the quality of the series is very very low, and since Destiny, the series are annual.

The new Bandai work system is low-budget, high marketing, good sales, bad reputation. That’s how Bandai-Namco is watched in Japan.

    • Hikari Langley

Someone is blind, what 2008 RPG looked, and ran that nicely without frame drops.

      • 永次

Infinite Undiscovery, Star Ocean 4, Tales of Vesperia, Trusty Bell…

        • Hikari Langley

Then have you played any of them often? Tales of Vesperia, and Infinite Undiscovery has extremely bad frame drops.

Tales of Vesperia, is almost any late game heated battle, with Rita/Estelle, the frame rate will drop, not to mention the stuttering that occurs in IU during heated battles. The crappy lipsync, the bloom set on max, a lot to list was wrong with IU.

          • 永次

I played all of them, I bought all of them in the release day the for every platform (PS3 re-release) and all of them are far better than Xillia/Xillia2/Zestiria in quality terms.

  • Pyrofrost

About time, I’m ready to preorder this >_<

  • Kattaro

I hope they also reveal the release date of anime.

    • Elle

      Omg I forgot about that.

  • new_tradition

‘Kay, so it does seem that Slay(?) will look a little different depending on which spirit(?) he fuses with in battle, but his base look, including that long pony tail, is the same anyways. I guess it’s not awful, but I was hoping we’d have more varied design looks. Oh well, there should at least be alt.costumes >3>

    • Samsara09

      yes,you are right.

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

If in Possibility this game releases later this year either December or sometime next year. I wouldn’t doubt they’re also drawing up plans for the Next Tales of Title on PS4 as we speak.

    • Samsara09

they work on multiple projects simultaneously. While they were working on xillia, they were doing xillia 2.While they were finishing xillia 2 they were probably beginning zestiria’s development. So,they are probably already working on a PS4 project.

  • Sav

    this looks nothing like xillia.
