Fighting game coming to Japanese arcades next year.

Pokken Tournament

The Pokemon Company has announced Pokken Tournament, a new Pokemon fighting game for arcades developed by Bandai Namco Games under the leadership of Tekken series director Katushiro Harada and Soulcalibur series main programmer Masaaki Hoshino.

A trailer shows Lucario and Machamp battling in a Tekken-style arena.

A Wii U version was not announced. But if other fighting games are any example, it will come to the platform eventually.

Watch the trailer below. View the first screenshots at the gallery. Pokken Tournament is due out at Japanese arcades next year.

Was so happy for this announcement until I realized it might not even come out on the Wii U. This might have been a good decision for Japan, but good luck trying to sell the western audience on a game they can’t play in their own homes, arcades are relatively dead out here.

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

I don’t think the intent is to release it as an arcade game here.

    • Mocketpon

There’s always Dave and Busters or Chuck E Cheese. Nintendo recently struck a deal with Dave and Busters with their Mario Kart game thing.

      • Budgiecat

but I hate those places lol

    • Eder García

it will come to the wiiU eventually… worst case scenario: for the WiiU’s successor

  • http://ryuz4ki57inenglish.wordpress.com/ Thomas FROEHLICHER

category dumbest business decision : Gold medal!

    • Budgiecat

sorry Square-Enix already won the Gold for that this month

      • Anime10121

Correction, they win that Gold EVERY month :P

      • http://ryuz4ki57inenglish.wordpress.com/ Thomas FROEHLICHER

        can’t deny that

  • BizarreJelly

All fighting games start off in arcades, Wii U will follow.

  • Cry_Zero

Wow i didnt expect them to make a pokemon fighting game since they have smash bros already :/

  • Gigus

My jaw dropped like mjolnir when deadpool tried to carry it.

    • Thatguy

I love how Deadpool cosplayers act like Deadpool.

    • Budgiecat

thor, lay off the cheesburgers mang….

      • Gigus

Can’t blame him. Mjolnir left him for another remember?

  • Guest

    Hwoarang Blaziken? Hitmonlaw?

  • Alter

In mean time, Wii U is screwed and when it finally land on Wii U, It will not get usual pokemon game sales. Mark my words.

    • Solomon_Kano

That goes without saying. There’s no Pokemon spinoff that sells like the traditional games. Add to the fact that it’s a fighting game and would eventually be on the Wii U and that’s about as far from surprising as we can get.

      • Budgiecat

Should be a 3 on 3 fighter like King of Fighters

        • Solomon_Kano

Your random replies have ceased being amusing.

          • Budgiecat

            thats not random

When you play Pokemon and battle someone, do you not have a choice of 3 Pokemon? When/if your first Pokemon is beaten or close, you can swap out a different one

In classic King of Fighters, you pick 3 fighters as well. In later ones, a tag in feature was implemented…

            • Solomon_Kano

Had literally nothing to do with my response here. Make that a comment if that’s how you feel, but that was completely random as a reply to me.

              • Budgiecat

It did though you’re just not using your Kanobrain:

Pokemon is revered mainly because of finding all teh Pokemon, and competing against others via the meta game like battles which involve high elements of strategy.

If its a simple one on one fighter like tekken, then yeah, I doubt that’ll draw in as much fans as a main would, but if they designed it to allow for those meta game strategy principles, then it stands to do much better than any other spinoff before it..

                • Solomon_Kano

So make that shit its own comment, if you want to say all of that, rather than your vague original comment. As it turns out, and this may shock you, I’m not nearly as interested in what goes on in your head as you seem to be.

                  • Budgiecat

It wasnt vague as I said it tied into your comment. It had everything to do with it

                    • Solomon_Kano

You explained it to tie it together. Your original comment, in the original context, was random. Nobody would follow “it should be 3 on 3” to your long, drawn out, retcon of a response that followed. We’re done here.

                    • Budgiecat

I hate when people say we’re done here. It was only ‘random’ to you because you failed to figure it out on your own due to lack of reading comprehension, hence I had to break it down for you like children’s bedtime reading. And you tried to save yourself by saying odd things like ‘random’ and ‘retcon’, but you are only further embarrassing yourself.
                      ‘Now’ we’re done here :P

                    • Solomon_Kano

Your attempt to explain that didn’t make it any less random, and that’s nothing to do with reading comprehension. Saying such does not make it so. But, as I said, this is done.

Actually, cat, I’ll do you one better: in the future, just don’t respond to me. I’m sure there’s someone out there actually interested in your responses, but it’s not me. kthxbai

                    • Budgiecat

                      We’re done here :P

  • OlimacFTW

Imagining a mainstream Pokemon game with real time battles in the same faction…

  • Orichalon Hades

huh, is there any support for the Wii U for sticks tho? Or is the Wii U controller even any good for fighting game?

  • Djkarl Pierre

Was expecting the Pokemon to look humanoid for this one.

  • Protagonist

Nice, looks good. Most likely there gonna remake this for wii U, and it will be a complete edition. I believe usually when they release fighting games like this in Japanese arcades, its to test the water, and get feedback.

    • Budgiecat

Bandai Namco fighters that later went to consoles:

      tekken (went to PS1)
      Soul Blade (went to PS1)
Gundam VS series (went to DC, PS2,PS3)
Gundam 1st person arcade game (went to PSP)
Super Dragonball Z (went to PS2)
Battle of YuYu Hakusho (went to PS2)

      Non traditional fighters:
      Dragonball Heroes (went to 3DS)
Daikaiju Battle: Ultra Coliseum (went to Wii)

      Skipped consoles:
      Dragonball Z (arcade)
      Dragonball Z Super Batte (arcade)
Dragonball Z Zenkai Battle Royale (arcade)

honorable mention skip: Dragonball Z VRVS (Sega arcade)

      • Protagonist

Well again, It all depends on users feedback, and the decision is up to the company. In this case, come on, its pokemon. And its a collaborative project with tekken team. You really expect a AAA project like this to not come to wii U?

      • Protagonist

Also, Namco bandai didn’t need to bring Dragonball Z Zenkai Battle Royale to console, since Battle of Z was in development for consoles anyway. Plus they already have DBZ xenoverse on the way. I can see why the other companies left there DBZ games on arcades, because the gaming market was over saturated with DBZ games during the time, and still is. Thanks to namco bandai.

    • Anime10121

Finally, someone who gets it! I was beginning to shake my head at all the NO WII U NO BUY posts… Its like people didnt know any “real” fighter releases in the arcades for basically “beta testing” the console version :/

  • http://hatintime.com/ ShadowFang

And people wonder why Tekken X Street Fighter is developing along at a snail’s pace…

I’m sure it would be done by now if Nintendo didn’t keep running to Namco’s Tekken team for various favors. Developing Smash Bros. for them because they were unequip to handle HD game development, doing the online code for games like Wii Sports Club because Nintendo spent a decade convinced that online modes weren’t important, and now this? Jeez… Tekken x Street Fighter will be lucky if it is playable – not even anywhere near finished – by 2016. (~_~;)

    • GetOffMy_Lawn

Who’s to blame: Nintendo for “asking favors”, or Bandai Namco for continually accepting? I don’t see how we can blame Nintendo for the delay of a game that they literally have nothing to do with…

      • Elvick

Eh, we can blame Nintendo for being incompetent though. But Bamco could say “nope.avi” if they wanted. So they’re to blame for their own game.

  • Peanut

    King of the Iron…something Tournament!
(Pokemon fans help me out here, I got nothing)

    • SuperLuigi

      Balls? Poke…balls

  • DarthBrian

Couldn’t they have used two Pokemon who weren’t the exact same color?

    The blue-on-blue action here isn’t very…colorful. :|

  • Renaldi Saputra

    lol, they said “shocking.”
While it’s not shocking at all for me and most likely for many pokemon fans.

well, let’s just hope it will be like dengeki bunko, I mean, several time later a console port is announced.

and I think they’ll focus more on humanoid pokemon

  • Invisbin

Idc. No Wii U no care.

  • OverlordZetta

This has a ridiculous amount of potential, so long as they capitalize on it. Let’s hope they do, then get it on consoles ASAP.

  • Wolf Star

Another reason to not get a Wii U (which I don’t have, but I want to because of smash bros 4) scratch that… It’s for arcade :).. Which in US some malls don’t have one >_<

  • dez-e-ray112

I’m pretty sure this will come to the Wii U at some point.

  • tokyobassist

Looks alright. Could be fun but it could be another one of those boring “fighters” like Naruto where flashy, gimmicky crap is more important than system mechanics or actual skill.

Also that Tekken Tag music lol.

  • Cry_Zero

The shocking thing about this announcement is that its not coming out on wii u

    • Anime10121

All legitimate fighters are first announced for the arcade, and with Harada and the Soul Calibur team being behind it… you dont get more legitimate than that (they have to balance test the game):P

It’ll come to Wii U by holiday 2015 guaranteed!

  • Bob Obb

Can’t believe Harada is wasting his time with Pokemon

  • Marco Tinè

Pokémon Snap aside, this is the first time we see those creatures rendered in a “realistic” fashion: what do you think about the look? I think this could be sort of a gamble for Nintendo.

  • Elvick

I knew it wouldn’t be surprising. Was this supposed to be the shocking announcement? Something we saw already? Lame.

    Pokemon Snap 2, NOW. >:|

    • 罪罰

Well, you see.. you weren’t supposed to know about that game! like! They can’t acknowledge that people already know! because! that would mean they acknowledge the leak! and they can’t do that! so like.

      • Elvick

I know, but that’s lame. I think Sony this e3 said something like, “I think you’ve all seen this already” to a trailer that had already leaked prior. MGS maybe… Something like that.

        I like that.

At LEAST don’t say it’s “surprising/shocking” if you know it leaked at some point. :/ oh well

  • $18114340

You know what’s pretty fucking sad? This was just announced and we already have more info and footage on it than we EVER had on Tekken X Street Fighter.

    • Elvick

Hell, we saw more on this before it was even announced than we’ve seen of TxSF.

  • dez-e-ray112

So far Harada’s got a load of fighting game projects in the works with Pokken Tournament, Tekken 7 and Tekken X Street Fighter.

  • Gustavo Rosario

    Color me excited!

  • bloodiOS

So… how long till the game arrives on Wii U? 2016?

    • Solomon_Kano

If it goes by the timeline of most fighters, or Tekken in particular, 6-12 months. Depends on how well the arcade run goes, really.

  • Budgiecat

    Arcade is for:

    2)build fan base
3)stay out of Smash Bros Wii U’s launch spotlight

  • OlimacFTW

Well, arcade machines are still popular in Japan. And if I remember correctly, there was a time when most of the good console games were ports from the best arcade games.

  • http://hatintime.com/ ShadowFang

Consider it the Japanese version of a beta test.
