Yokai Watch 2, not surprisingly, passes two million.

Yokai Watch 2

Sales for Yokai Watch 2: Ganso and Honke have passed two million in Japan, this week’s Media Create sales chart reveals.

New releases include Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission 2 at 81,000 sales, Senran Kagura 2 at 46,000 sales, and Ultra Street Fighter IV at 42,000 sales. Other new releases, like Shin Hayarigami and Lost Dimension, didn’t fare as well.

Takaki you failed. SK fans sent you a message and it says “hurry up with Estival Versus”

    • Eder García

looks like SK is one step closer to became Playstation exclusive… its a shame

      • http://ryuz4ki57inenglish.wordpress.com/ Thomas FROEHLICHER

they can still make SK multi-platform, scalable, and eventually everyone can be happy

      • Zackasaur

Eh, that sounds awesome to me.

I’d rather play SK on solid hardware.

        • British_Otaku

I don’t follow what you mean by “solid hardware. >_>

They seem to be really good with the 3DS and Vita hardware now.

          • http://ryuz4ki57inenglish.wordpress.com/ Thomas FROEHLICHER

he stated the obvious fact that Vita hardware > 3DS hardware, thing that many Japanese fans might have thought too in not going to buy SK2

            • British_Otaku

Sure, the Vita is a more powerful platform, but that hasn’t been a factor in selling games for most cases. Virtue’s Last Reward sold better on the 3DS and Conception 2 sold better on the Vita. >_>

In this case, they developed games which specifically benefit from the different hardware in clever ways and finally managed to get good framerates and presentation on both platforms.

    • https://twitter.com/RyoonZ RyoonZ

Can’t wait for that 1080p60pfs goodness!

    • OlimacFTW

I dont know… Unless, of course, Sony announces another Vita price drop in the same day for the release of Estival Versus.

      • Elvick

Because all the people that would buy another versus are people with no Vita.

        What logic is that?

        • British_Otaku

An anime running is probably more key at this point, but this is hardly the first game sequel which sold less than the original.

Shinovi Versus’ Vita successor may still sell less even with a bigger install base and a better game if word of mouth and marketing aren’t so strong.

          • http://ryuz4ki57inenglish.wordpress.com/ Thomas FROEHLICHER

nice damage control, but 50% drop can’t be just a problem of word of mouth or marketing

            • British_Otaku

I haven’t been accused of damage control in a while, cheers for that.

So what do you suggest is responsible for the “50% drop”? Fans of a game without a single scan or screenshot or platform who are likely part of the 100K who bought SK on the 3DS or Vita or both ignoring what looks like another good installment?

Also a 50% drop from what exactly? If we stick to first week sales, only Shinovi Versus with all of the factors it had sold twice as much or more.

Thinking rationally, if a sequel of a game which got 69K first week (150K collective copies on the 3DS at minimum) can’t reach a large audience with better everything, it stands to reason that they didn’t disappear or throw away their 3DS systems but not fully aware of the title.

    • Luna Kazemaru

      keep the fanboy train running

      • http://ryuz4ki57inenglish.wordpress.com/ Thomas FROEHLICHER

fanboy? I think not. I am a costumer of Marvelous Inc. and as such I have every right to question their business decisions. Basic thing in liberal economy, and there’s that thing called “free speech”

  • Kuro-Law

Lost dimension sales are damn pathetic.

  • sanjitps

Damn Lost dimension sales are just sad

  • NessWonderSprite

Lost Dimension was a mega bomb. I wonder how many more original rpgs we will see on Vita. Other than FFX HD, I cannot think of another successful one.

    • novurdim

      …oreshika? And LD is not vita-exclusive, ps3-version simply hasn’t sold even 3,5k.

    • Zackasaur

LD is just a sales bomb in general. It’s on PS3 and didn’t even make the charts

Vita will continue to gather new JRPGs. Quite a lot have been successful/profitable, both domestically and in the west.

  • http://Xcite79.1up.com/ Keegs79

I find it odd when people say the PS4 isn’t selling well because the mobile market is dominating. If that is the case than why is the 3DS and Vita sells so well as gaming handhelds?

I know why, its because there is no major games on the PS4 that cater to the Japanese. I just find it funny how mobile is pushed as an excuse for everything.

    • Orichalon Hades

mobile market = mobile gaming aka on the go gaming

so 3DS and Vita is in that list of mobile gaming.

      • http://Xcite79.1up.com/ Keegs79

Ah, that is true. I didn’t eve think of it like that.

      • Hexodious

        It’s called handheld gaming.

    • Zackasaur

The overall console market in Japan HAS grown smaller.

But your implication is on point — the PS4 has strong Japanese hits coming, and it will see a sales spike.

      • NessWonderSprite

The PS4 has had japanese titles. They are not moving the needle at all.

        • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Said japanese titles were multiplatform with a platform people do own, PS3. That’s a no contest situation.

  • Renaldi Saputra

So, all new sales except dragon ball were killed by youkai watch 2

As I said last week, youkai watch stronk

  • BizarreJelly

Anyone around here actually played Yokai Watch? How is it? It doesn’t strike me as anything extraordinary but can’t deny those sales.

    • Zackasaur

Never correlate quality with sales. lulz

I don’t think it’s anything extraordinary, but it’s cute. I can’t say I get more out of it than out of Pokemon. I only played some of the first, though. I await localisation.

      • BizarreJelly

Very true, I just thought it must be doing something special if it can keep up with Pokemon lol

        • British_Otaku

Marketing and branding are key to sales. They went all out to make it noticed and the anime seems to be a key factor in it growing from a 50K first week series to a 1 million copy first week series.

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

It’s nothing crazy to be honest. Its okay and cute but thats pretty much it. I have no idea why sales are so high but more power to them.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

I thought Senran Kagura 2 would do better. My copy should be arriving tomorrow. And damn look at Lost Dimension. Isn’t it out on PS3 too? Sales didn’t even make it to the chart. No clue why people went with Vita over PS3 considering that horrid frame rate on Vita.

    • British_Otaku

For some reason, even with the greater saturation of 3DS systems and much better game I somewhat expected the game to dip in sales to this level…

At the least, I hope the game reaches 100K or more with time just like Shinovi Versus and Senran Kagura Burst.

My copy hasn’t came around yet either (going to email them about that now), perhaps we could play online when my copy comes. If you want to trade friend codes, my one is: 3024-5239-6058

Lost Dimension looked pretty cool, a shame that Bravely Default’s 100th rerelease (with a free version being on the eShop) did better. >_>

      • FitzpatrickPhillips

Sure, we can definitely team up on this. I’ll add you now. Mine is: 3566-2893-2020.

I tried the Lost Dimension demo on Vita and besides the frame rate I really liked it. I wonder why it tanked. And I’m pretty sure SK2 will break 100k easy.

        • British_Otaku

          Added.

We can only imagine that it was just abysmal marketing, it is hard to tell as English speakers who read articles on anything with excitement just because the writer mentions Valkyria Chronicles.

I only played the PS3 demo which seemed to run fine and not push any limits (aside from the 3DS+PS3 E.X Troopers running and looking great on both platforms), so I guess they just didn’t have much experience or time to optimise the Vita version even if ended up selling more.

It is an uphill battle from here for SK2 but it’ll make it.

  • RedSuisei

Anyone knows how much previous SK on 3DS games sold? I think it should be very clear that SK-type games have larger audience on the Vita than the 3DS, so comparing it with Shinovi Versus sales isn’t very fair IMO.

Also, was LD that bad? The trailers I’ve seen seem decent enough.

    • Renaldi Saputra

Note that when SV was on releasing date, there was a discount for PS Vita consoles and IIRC there’s another promotion that boosted the sales
But it was only lasting for the 1st week

      • British_Otaku

And that the anime was running.

        • Renaldi Saputra

Oh yes, it could be a factor too

    • British_Otaku

Both of the previous Senran Kagura games sold more on the first week.

      Senran Kagura (2011): 52,206
      Senran Kagura Burst (2012): 69,084

      Source: http://www.siliconera.com/2013/03/04/senran-kagura-shinovi-versus-moves-120000-copies/

Burst sold over 100K by some point in 2013.

Given that the best the games have sold has been around that point even with millions of systems sold, the key factor is awareness, marketing and such not whether the small fraction of a fanbase is bigger on one system or another.

  • epy

Those Lost Dimension numbers… Dammit Japan! Now FuRyu is going to have to develop mobile crap.

    • Zackasaur

      :c

    • NessWonderSprite

Or develop the game for the 3DS which they probably should have done

      • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

There’s a possible chance it will be swept under regardless due to other games dominating big time. ex. Yokai Watch, Pokemon, Mario, etc…

      • FitzpatrickPhillips

Hell no. Besides it is on PS3 too.

        • NessWonderSprite

The PS3 version did even worse. Less than a thousand copies sold

      • Zackasaur

They’d have done even worse on 3DS. lol

The game simply went under the radar.

        • British_Otaku

No guarantee it would do worse, but presumably Senran Kagura 2, Yokai Watch 2 and Dragon Ball Heroes Ultimate Mission 2 before we talk about older games would dwarf and crush it.

Shame, but they just both picked a tough launch period and failed to market this well to the right audience.

I’m sure the people who wanted a game with story implications as well as a SRPG experience are around, they are those people hoping for another Valkyria Chronicles game which isn’t Valkyria Duel (I wouldn’t mind that on 3DS actually).

      • https://twitter.com/RyoonZ RyoonZ

They’ve been proven to done worse on 3DS.
Unchainblades, Exstetra, etc. But of course this fact doesn’t mean anything because every game that released on 3DS will magically perform better simply because of its enormous install base.

      • desponent

Because every new IP on 3DS will sell blockbuster, lol.

      • Elvick

        Lol

      • http://twitter.com/SrTirano MrTyrant

        Minus points for you.

    • dark-kyon

      or another tolove ru game.

  • desponent

    Japan…

  • Kyosuke Yoshino

How come Senran Kagura 2 sales or so low? I’ve already got the game and I’ve to say it’s awesome, easily the best in the series so far.

I expected ~100k sales, however this is even lower than the original…

    • Kayseur

Don’t know if it’s “easily” the best but it can definitly hold its ground against SV, lots of what needed to be improved have actually been improved.

What’s funny is, the ratings aren’t even bad. It’s at 3.7 on Amazon japan, which is pretty decent. Maybe there just wasn’t enough marketing or fans are rooting for Estival Versus instead and overlooked this one.

      • British_Otaku

Estival Versus doesn’t even have a screenshot, scan, release window, confirmed game platform or trailer to overshadow Senran Kagura 2. Since even The Last Guardian has more information and reason to have hype, we can’t reasonably think that was a factor.

Marketing and such is more of a factor.

        • Guest

Say what you want 3DS fanboy, but people who play SV expecting EV as improvement of SV.

          • British_Otaku

I never said that people don’t expect an improvement from SV in EV (I expect an improvement as well), but that the game has no information out for it to affect the sales of a related game.

The fact that your best response was that people expect an improvement or “3DS fanboy” tells me that you couldn’t find any marketing material for EV.

Anyway, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 couldn’t lose sales due to fans expecting Tekken 7. Mass Effect 3 on the Wii U did lose sales as there was a trilogy on more popular systems coming out at the same time.

This is more akin to TTT2, Guest person.

    • dark-kyon

I think what the game not having the new girls of shinovi versus, was a bad thing what can play against.you know the gameplay is important, but in japan the characters are more important.if bullet girls sell betwen 70-100k when goes on sale next week the problem is obvius.i think what takaki must make the sk mainline 3ds,psvita.

    • Shippoyasha

I would worry about the general sense of sales malaise instead. I guess people are still very wary of spending on games. Especially when free to play mobile is so big now.

  • fyi1191

    Hopes Takaaki gets it now.
SK2 has the worst opening sales in the series.

    • Kyosuke Yoshino

What does he needs to get?
I enjoy the game a lot, do you have some problem with it?

    • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

      Gets what exactly?

      • dark-kyon

maybe japaneses games don’t want to play his fanservices games in a tiny or big low res sd screen after playing in a good hd screen.

        • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

          Well ya

        • Luna Kazemaru

oh boy the fanboyness is strong

    • Luna Kazemaru

      don’t start this

  • OlimacFTW

Dat Youkai Watch 2. One month has passed and still the game is in the top of the sales.
    Those Lost Dimension numbers instead…

  • rekka_zan

    Holy crap, Lost Dimension D:
I wonder if this means it won’t make it to the west. I was pretty interested on it, you know ;w;)

    • https://twitter.com/RyoonZ RyoonZ

Natural Doctrine sold like shit too. Doesn’t stop it being localized. We can only hope.

      • British_Otaku

        That’s correct.

Good and bad sales in one region don’t guarantee whether a game will get localised, see the generation of waiting for Inazuma Eleven in America or 13 years we waited for Chrono Trigger in Europe and Australia.

        • Elvick

Even perception doesn’t matter for localization. (I say perception instead of quality, since it’s highly subjective)

    • dark-kyon

you know what is difficult what we get more furyu games in the west, xseed tell something what they are a pain in the ass to work.if the game is not great i think what they gonna pass, case extetra

  • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

    Lost Dimensions mega fail

  • LustEnvy

At this point, I dont see these sales numbers as something bombing. Japan is being incredibly nitpicky with what it buys now. Those past numbers of new IPs hitting 80,000 seem like a thing of the past now. Now, it’s gonna be just a few games doing that well in the year.

The Great Depression of gaming in general, for Japan.

    • Zackasaur

      :c

Reduced game budgets will only further restrict design and marginalise Japanese genres.

Thank the stars for stuff like FF/KH.

  • ( `Д´)ノ)`ν゜)

Lowest Senran Kagura sales out of all 3 games. Is the game just bad or are people waiting for another 3D musou-like?

    • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

No it’s a good game, maybe SK needs to be exclusive to PlayStation

      • Alter

+100000000000, agreed. Until Nintendo makes something comparable to Sony hardware (in same generation), i won’t buy their’s.

    • Zackasaur

      It’s not bad.

I just think the fandom on PlayStation is larger. There is more interest there.

    • Kayseur

It’s great for a 3DS game. If you liked Burst, you’ll probably love Deep Crimson. And what’s funny is that, actually, maybe fans are waiting for another 3D-musou like game but… DP is reaally close to that format now. No longer feels like an awkward side-scroller.

So fans are probably just more on Vita but since the former two 3DS games still sold more, it definitly has a lot to do with marketing as well. Let’s have an anime running for EV and voilà.

      • outlawauron

Series is a lot more popular and well known than it was in 2011. Selling worse than the original isn’t something you can really spin.

  • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

Looks like Lost Dimension met a swift End.

To have both the predecessor and its successor to maintain top-10 places – just incredible, Level-5: The Great Utilisers of the Cross Media.

  • shogunknight

    Lost dimension…….

  • Well lost dimension isnt that good anyway, the story is below average but some gameplay factor does make it interesting since traitor is random multiple play is fun since you never know who might betray you each chapter and there are 5) enemy is bland but the strategy part is fun I recently found out Akito can teleport past doors and teleport his Allies into the room hes in. It was worth the purchase for me though better than exstetra.

    • Budgiecat

Nightcrawler Akito best character in game

      *BAMF!*

    • Alter

I dislike the character design. bland.

  • Articuno76

Shin Hayarigami (Vita) looks pretty hot. Apparently quite dark now that its age rating is higher than previous entries into the series. Between that and Clannad coming out… like pretty much tomorrow (IIRC) looks like there’s plenty of ADV to keep Vita owners busy.

    • PrinceHeir

Love the art style of Shin Hayarigami.

I wonder if NIS America can localize this? The Clannad Vita is only a port from PS3 right? Any new features?

Damn, it looks like Corpse Party Blood Drive drop off the list :(

      Poor Lost Dimensions though.

      • kurosan9712

Hayarigami was ALWAYS a better series than Corpse Party.
It was a better horror, had a better idea, and pretty much everything was better.
Except Corpse Party got to the west, while MUCH more text heavy(with a lot of hard-to-translate terminology and cultural references) Hayarigami didn’t.

Sucks, but anyways. Also, I got PS3 ver.

      • Articuno76

I’m not really sure on the details on Clannad (but we’ll know in a few hours when it appears on the store).

I’m hoping it is based on the PS3 version because I already have it on the PS2. And I’ve not finished it… been working through it with a guide over the last few weeks (get addicted for a day or two, don’t play it for ages, repeat).

It’s perfectly serviceable on the PS2 (and dirt cheap) but the experience of playing hi-res visual novels on the Vita screen has yet to be matched IMO. Throw in a pair of headphones and snuggle up in bed and you have THE gaming experience :P

Now, if someone could get around to doing a hi-def version of 428 for the Vita as well :P

  • Hexodious

Oh well. I had a feeling with this current great news from Gamescon that a bomb shell would drop sooner or later, and there it is. Lost Dimension.

I guess I can kiss the chances of localization goodbye.

    • Renaldi Saputra

But localization doesn’t depend on japan sales

    • Elvick

Like we haven’t ever gottwn localizations of games that bombed in Japan.

      • Budgiecat

Well, the last (and only) FuRyu game ever to be localized of their twenty three game library was UnchainBlades ReXX, so chances are kinda slim…

  • PrinceHeir

Hope Senran Kagura 2 would sell at least 100k by the end of the year.

Though the series is just better for Vita just for the improve hardware and lovely HD screens O___O

Ultra Street Fighter IV seems to be doing good as well!!

  • TheBlackRabbit

    yo street fighter still chugging…

  • MrKappa

SK didn’t do all that hot, guess the 3DS user base just isn’t in for that type of game.
And holy smokes at Lost Dimension flopping. Where the heck is the PS3 version? It didn’t even make the chart?

    • novurdim

      PS3-version is around 1k, as I heard.

      • MrKappa

Yikes, so much for a localization.

        • novurdim

Localization doesn’t really depend on sales. Hell, we got Natural Doctrine that bombed almost as loud.

          • Budgiecat

            And Saint Seiya Brave Soldiers

        • Elvick

As mentioned, that’s not really true. Sometimes games like that can do better in the west. And it’s clear some niche publishers get that

    • Alter

Yeah, most 3DS owner (in Japan) are underaged kids, what do you expect ?
