Plus, new event scenes starring Mikleo and Lailah.

Tales of Zestiria

Bandai Namco debuted first footage of Tales of Zestiria‘s field and map battle gameplay during its latest news broadcast this morning.

The footage shows Sorey running about the game world. When he runs into an enemy, rather than transition to a new screen like previous Tales games, the battle takes place where the enemy is encountered.

Additionally, the publisher also showed new event scenes starring Mikleo and Lailah. Watch that below.

Tales of Zestiria is in development for PlayStation 3.

    Popping, popping everywhere.

    • Budgiecat

Even PS4 open world games have pop in

      • Blaz

That’s Xillia 1 poping it’s really bad and noticeable.
I dunno if X2 also has it but it’s annoying.

  • refrain

    Dat fusion

  • AlphaSixNine

It feels like the camera is a bit too close when the battle starts, and it looks a bit crowded. I’ll probably get used to it after playing for a while.

    Other than that… CAN’T F*CKING WAIT.

    • Elvick

Hopefully they have options for the camera distance.

      • Tetsu

I think they usually do…maybe. lol

  • Elvick

I really don’t get why the map is so far out. Move that shit to the corner.

The battle transitions are pretty ace though.

edit; also.. ugh Japan, why u no HD

  • Regnitz

    Lailah’s voice hurts

    • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

I think it’s better than some I’ve heard given to women in their 30s. I don’t care if it’s something they like, once you hit a certain age your voice tends to sound less like a 10 yr old. That goes for women too. Can’t stay cute forever. But Lailah’s voice to me sounds what I imagine Yuna of FFX sounded like in JPN. Quiet, shrill, but not that shrill.

  • Quiet Gear Soild

The characters are too close to each others.
    Hopefully that’s just a formation.

  • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

Day one buy! It reminds me of Rogue Galaxy’s battle transition but with Tales games better characters and battles system skills/spells! Win win!
I still think my main party will be Sorey, Mikleo, Alisha and Dezel. Unless Mikleo can’t heal, then I’ll switch out Dezel for a healer.

I like the vastness of the areas too. Looks very good. Chances are they’ll be making exploration fun past time even before we get an airship.

    • BossTuff

Rogue Galaxy comparison is spot on. The fields looked barren when they first showed the game off, glad they’re trying to pump it up a bit. Now, I think they should work on porting this to the PS4 ASAP so I can retire my PS3…

      • Budgiecat

        Retire your PS3?

But Godzilla is still coming out….

      • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

I think the game’s getting up there. As far as I can tell there’s a sense of vast out nature they may be shooting for. Maybe in later parts of the game they’ll be more swarms you run into and battle. Most Tales games start out too easy, then once all the tutorials are done you get into the real deal battles.

    • Samsara09

      if we get one.

Hell,I saw a topic where people bitched about which game zestiria “inspired” itself on.A guy said xenoblade, another rogue galaxy, and they kept on with that.Just saying:That was hella funny.

All caracters look quite playable, just like in xillia and xillia 2.

      • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

I like the majority of the characters. But there’s not much inspiration to play as anyone other than Alisha, Sorey, Dezel or Mikleo. They seem to speak to me.

  • ShinGundam

    Looks cool.

  • zakou

I will get this game obviously but i have to be a bit picky, the battle transition isnt really what they promised, it still takes 1-2 seconds just like in Xillia or Graces F, it’s like this annoying stop before each fight.

The thing is that here you will always fight them where you step as in the same location and the other tales of games the locations change when in battle still hmm it’s not what i wanted.

What i want is something of a true action jrpg that is open world/field with 0 second battle transition, i mean look at White Knight Chronicle, i got a bone to pick with that game as well, let’s just say the combat was too slow and not cool enough. But hey no game is perfect XD

Edit: to make myself more clear, this isn’t a true seamless battle transition, its just the same as other tales game just now the monsters will stay where they are, again go look at White Knight Chronicle for true seamless battle transitions.

    1. You have to touch the monsters for the battle to start
    2. Then its a 1 second stop to zoom in and read the monster data of how many enemies you are going to face.
    3. The data is loaded and the monster devides into that many fiends that were generated and then the battle starts.

After a quick 2+ seconds you can fight and this goes to every single fight, no different than previous Tales of games.

Edit: This is the comment that disappeared, i made a new one later on, now it somehow re-appeated lol.

  • Hatsuaki

The only thing I really don’t like is how the battle results look. They’re way too big and lengthy and make the scene seem a bit too busy imo, but I’ll get used to it. It’ll probably seem nicer on a bigger screen, too. Also, hopefully we see the return of group victory scenes, I love those!

    • Raziel Kõbe

I think wil have victory scenes, these are normal scenes this happen in other tales too

    • Ladius

Victory scenes have almost become a series staple, dropping them would have made lots of people sad since they provide funny gags and sometimes even a bit of character development.

  • Raziel Kõbe

Remember me Zeldas maps, Twilight princess, but more bigger. Amazing :) Andthe battle transition like Okami and Rogue Galaxy. Just buy now!

  • Guardian Byakko

Big three and someone else for a cameo battle like in Xillia 2 and day one buy for me:)

Edit: if you don’t know the big three consists of Yuri, Leon, and Asbel whom make it to top three spots in popularity.

  • Nitraion

Rogue galaxy? but with visible enemy?
now i feel must get better place to battle :O

  • bloodiOS

Time to say goodbye to 60fps battle, I guess =(

    • Karysonson

      Why do you say that?

      • bloodiOS

Because I don’t believe they can maintain 60fps in an open field.

        • Samsara09

let’s not rush to an analyses.

          • bloodiOS

I’m simply expecting the worst. They’re welcome to prove me wrong with the final product.

            • Samsara09

              that’s better.

        • Ladius

Point is, the battle arena apparently covers only a small area around the point where the encounter was triggered, so there’s no reason to assume they will drop to fps to account for a larger area that you only get to explore outside fights.

          • bloodiOS

This area is already a part of the open field. The party doesn’t get transported to an isolated area specifically tuned to maintain 60fps, so of course I would be skeptical about whether it can actually hold on to 60fps.

            • Ladius

The point is that this seems to be a compromise between traditional Tales LMBS battles transitions and seamless combat, since it reuses the environments where the battle was triggered while still transitioning to a smaller batte arena. So, in a sense, you’re getting transported to an isolated area that happens to be part of the field you were exploring.

Since there actually is a transition between explorations and battles, there’s no reason to assume it can’t be used to toggle a fps switch since it’s already linked to a change in controls and environment, nor there is any reason to assume the game has to account for the whole field if it isn’t actually available during battle.

              • bloodiOS

There is no reason to state things in absolute. Even after the transition, geometries and textures in the previously open field such as several trees and the waterfall in the distance remain in sight even after the battle has started, so there is a reason to believe that performance will be affected when taking into account the resources needed to render those assets together with other party members and additional enemies. Also, as long that there isn’t a 60fps footage or an official statement to prove it, your assumption will remain an assumption and there will always be room for me to be skeptical about how the battle transition works and assume otherwise. Not saying that the method isn’t doable, but I have doubt about whether or not the Tales team can actually pull it off on the PS3. I would be extremely glad to be proven wrong by the final product. In any case, there is no definitive evidence for your guesswork so there is no reason why there would be “no reason” for me to doubt it.

                • Ladius

While I agree fps debates could be premature at this stage, your first post stated that you didn’t believe they could pull 60fps in battle because of the open environment, and my answer was simply meant to explain why that isn’t the case since there’s a difference between having battles start seamlessly in those open fields and having a fast but noticeable transition to a smaller arena that uses the field as a backdrop.

                  • bloodiOS

My initial response to @karysonson:disqus and to you might have been too vague to be adequate but however, as I have stated above, even after the transition occurs, assets from the previously open field were already rendered on the scene and remain there even after the transition into battle occured. Whatever kind of transition there might be, resources are still required to render assets on the scene. So when taking into account that together with those, there will also be other party members entering the scene along with additional enemies, not to mention the special effects accompany each arte, I have doubt about combat being able to sustain 60fps. This is the very reason that worries me after watching the clip. This is of course just me expecting the worst and doubting how well the Tales team is able to optimize their engine for the PS3, so I would definitely be happy to be proven wrong by the time the game comes out.

    • Izzeltrioum

That’s why that 1-2 seconds sequence is there for. It separates main exploration area from combat, so 60fps combat must be possible. Nico NIco’s stream’s fps aren’t actually the best. Let’s hope for some speed changes with the upcoming official HD footage

Or at least that’s what I believe.

  • Protagonist

Haha, I was expecting some kingdom hearts type gameplay, but this is cool as well. Looking forward to this.

    • Izzeltrioum

      Wow you can’t be serious.

      • Protagonist

        I am.

  • Samsara09

allright everyone!look at the localized names.Let’s troll!Let’s rage!Wanna see a brawl here. How dare they make those bad names!?I am just kidding though.I could care less about this.

I am really hyped for this game.

So..grade is back,eh?Wonderful.Grinding for titles was annoying…although it was still better then graces’s.

    so…it’s just one caracter.Since I am a lady’s man…just kidding.
don’t worry.Next tales of in PS4 will be all four.

so…looks like people won’t be able to bitch that all areas look the same.So bad…

the battle screen looks different.I see.The battle pics from earlier really were a prototype.Well, this is good.It will teach people to chill before analyzing an early trailer or images.
This game looks like it could be releasing in japan this year.

    • Jesse

Sigh, I was afraid they’d keep Sorey. You know what, we’re getting the game, I don’t care. I’ll just get used to it. Even if it does still sound like Slay in Engrish.

      • Budgiecat

        Canadian Sorry

        • Samsara09

Well, there are many people named Sorey around the world…surname or no.

If you want to pronounce it like “sorry”,then that’s your choice. You are being an idiot. So please, don’t even joke about it.You are better than this.

          • Budgiecat

I said “Canadian Sorry”, which is pronounced “So-ray”

            • Elvick

              Not really it’s, “sorey”.

              • Budgiecat

Because of American English mispronounciation, people will probably read Sorey as “So-ree”, until we hear proper localized Eng dub voice over for Sorey (which is pronounced “So-ray” (“Canadian sorry, but with a heavier focus on the “So” part)

Even though actual official Japanese Romanization is “Su-rei”

                • Elvick

                  It’s not so ray. It’s sore-y

Do you know how ray is pronounced? That’s not how Canadians say it. At all.

This is off top though so…

                  • Budgiecat

I just remember Jim Carey saying it in Anchorman 2…

  • Budgiecat

I knew it; only one person follows you on the field map.

the other 2 magically appear when a battle starts..

  • Karysonson

The combat looks even more fluid then Graces to me!

  • DesmaX

Yeah, I was hoping it would be a lot faster than that.

And those post-battle transitions are completely out of place

  • LordKaiser

480p videos……………………….. Also I hope that the fire lady is not the only celestial fusion.. that will be lazy.

    • Samsara09

obviously not. They are holding out the goodies…

    • Ladius

I think there’s no reason to worry, they simply don’t want to show the other forms so soon since they will probably get their own little announcements later.

  • kao

I hope you can adjust the camera angle because it looks really cramped up on the battle field.

But I’m liking the over-world map so far, it looks way better than the plains in the other games.

    • Ladius

I think there will definitely be camera options like in the other Tales games, previous screenshots already showed a different angle.

  • badmoogle

Love the openess of the world map.Day 1 for me.

  • zakou

Don’t know what happened to my previous post, magicly deleted o.o i think?

Anyway i was pointing out how this isnt seamless transition and we still have to touch the monsters and wait 2-3 seconds till the battle starts, this including every single monsters that we touch. (which in a sense is identical to previous Tales of games) with only exception that the monsters stay where they are on the field.

    1. Touch the monsters
    2. The game reads the data on the friend and zooms in counting how many monsters are going to be generated.
    3. The fight pauses 1 second again to spawn the remaining generated monsters and then you can fight.

White Knight Chronicle is what a seamless transition is, still i will probably get this day one.

    • kao

knowing the tales series and its battle systems, something like this is more or less what I was expected from their “seamless transition” claims. It seem like a lot of people were expecting it to look like some kinda live mmo(or resemble xenoblade chronicles) but i still like how it looks so far.

I just hope that the fields for battle can get a little bigger(adjust camera angle) since it looks pretty cramped up with all the enemies and allies shuffling in that small space..

    • Ladius

Unless you wanted them to drastically change the series’ battle system, this seems to be the best compromise between seamless battles and Tales’ LMBS.

You need to be able to fight in the same spot where you triggered the battles, and yet you need to have different controls and a smaller arena, and probably trigger a fps switch since battle arenas are smaller than the whole map. A transition (thankfully a really fast one) is necessary to accomodate all those things.

      • zakou

Like you and Kao said, i fully understand that, obviously they cannot do it like WKC since it is a different battle system, however, they could make the transitions faster with no slow down screens.

Imo they as developers could come up with something better than this, just saying, heck give enough time if we worked for them im sure some of us could come up with a better “seamless transition”

But i won’t be picky i will still get the game but the truth is that this isn’t different from tales of xillia or graces F, monsters stay on their spots and thats it.

If it was me programming and if i could i would make it so that the data loads as soon as you see a monster on the field, while the monster is running in your direction the battle transition would happen on the fly as he is running, something like that.

        • Ladius

I think a transition will always be required if they want to keep the LMBS intact, since that battle system was made with separate battle arenas in mind (as opposed to other action jrpg series like Ys or Secret of Mana, or to other jrpgs with seamless encounters like FFXII, WKC or Xenoblade).

For instance, without a transition you would have to switch to completely different controls to move your characters because of the linear run, free run and sidesteps (instead of just walking like in the exploration parts), which would still require some kind of toggle for “battle mode”. Party members would have to be already on screen and to jump to their formation immediately as soon as the battle starts, too, which could be problematic. This isn’t even considering how Tales battles usually are fast paced affairs, and splitting enemies in huge areas would make the rhythm noticeably different and make the battles continuous instead of having single encounters. There’s also a concern regarding fps, since they could very well use those transition to switch to 60fps instead of keeping the explorations’ 30 fps.

If I have to choose between this series’ identity and smoother transitions that would make it more similar to other franchises I will always go for the former option, even if I agree there is still room for improvements. If the future Tales games continue with Zestiria’s formula, things will probably change slowly in order to make transitions smoother.

          • zakou

Very true, still i think a transition like Tales of Xillia or Graces F looks better than a laggy slowdown zooming in and out, oh well, you can’t please everybody i guess.

    • Elvick

Disqus has some issues today, I got a few comments that vanished too.

    • Izzeltrioum

People would complain Tales going the Dark Souls/Skyrim/YS way if they fully action the series. And complain even more if goes full MMO the Xenoblade way without any fps invested to combat whatsoever (Dedicated fps to mantain terrain stable).

It’s a curse if you do; curse if you don’t scenario it seems.

  • Blaz

    God, i hate this!
I want cell shaded grafx like Vesperia, overworld like symphonia, vesperia, abyss.
Imo this is a huge step back.

  • BlueCereal

The environments look more complex and detailed than Xillia.

  • PhoenixAutomatic~♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪~

Many of you here might disagree with me here, but that pop-in battle transition is really bad. I hoped for a much better transition, similar to Xillia or Graces F. Aside from that, The open world looks really nice! I love it!

    • zakou

They could fix that with Data-Install and patch that shit up so the transitions would take less than a second with no slow downs, or so i hope they can.

  • new_tradition

Just saw this. The field looks really big o.o

Seamless battle transition is a nice touch, although it’s not something that I really was demanding (the only thing I tend to really hate now are random encounters).

I’m kind of confused why the on field characters are limited to two. Unless it’s something that plays into a potential affection system..?

As for the story scene, seeing Slay and Mercurio(?) interacting a lot, I’d love to see scenes where to other people it looks like Slay is talking to himself, haha xD

Yeah, not much to say. Pretty stoked for the game. Can’t wait to play it ^^

  • Lalum

The transition doesn’t look that good and the camera isn’t great. Honestly I’d rather they just keep the old pop-in but still make the battle take place in the same area.

    • zakou

Indeed I kinda expected a little bit better from them, whatever they have promised, this isn’t it.

  • http://hatintime.com/ ShadowFang

That looks a little rough. I mean, something about the transition is weird… maybe I just expect more of a quick, but sweeping, camera move? When it pulls back currently, the party is really close to the camera – I know this isn’t finished, but it seems like it needs some tweaking and optimizations still.

The engine could use a little more polish in general. I mean, it’s kind of amazing they forced the Xillia tech to display larger, more complex areas at a consistent frame rate, but they need to fix that pop up/fade-in. And the second video with the cutscene has the audio balance out of whack – I’m pretty sure Motoi Sakuraba’s music should not be blaring as loudly as the voices there :)

But I dig what I see in general and like looks at early games, so no biggie. I just hope they fix these kind of things.

Other than that, it looks great! I am a fan of the more complex field maps. The battle system (once the camera pulls back and settles in) looks just as good as any other Tales’ game. And I like the fusion thing that Slay can do with Lailah. (I prefer the Japanese name of the hero to the Western one, “Sorey”. To us in the West, at least “Slay” is a word, but “Sorey” isn’t a name)

  • PrinceHeir

    This is awesome!!

Though why 360p once again in 2014 T___T

I want to enjoy the artstyle and background more!

  • Izzeltrioum

Aside from that camera angle, everything looks fine. It seems people were expecting another offline JWMMO like Xenoblade in terms of combat transitions/design at all. This is Tales, and fans know how Bamco loves to stick to their guns with passion instead of borrowing ideas from their Western counterparts. Personally I loved the transition (Fast, making level-grind more enjoyable)… but what really irks me is the cloning sequence (I have this fear that chain encounters will disappear ;_;).
I believe the series itself’s main focus is fps during combat, so tons of limitations are expected. Actually it’s really amazing how they managed to support current design trends and still improve combat and making framerate somehow stable.

But we do know Zestiria’s technical side will put the grounds needed for that PS4 Tales game. Enjoy it while it last.

Then again this footage was taken from a live Nico Nico stream. When Bamco releases the official HD video, the changes will be noticeable.

  • gulabjamal

Yikes that camera angle and clutter of characters going through each other on screen. The perspective is REALLY BAD. Hope this gets fixed. Aside from that it’s looking good
