Yokai Watch 2: Ganso and Honke top the chart.

Yokai Watch 2

Yokai Watch 2: Ganso and Honke are the top sellers in this week’s Japanese sales charts. Across both versions, the 3DS sequel sold an astounding 1.3 million units in its opening week, pushing 3DS XL hardware sales to 55,000 this week.

After Yokai Watch 2, the chart reverts to a lesser sold version of last week’s sales, with the second highest selling game this week being Freedom Wars at 20,000. On the hardware side, however, PS Vita received a nice boost to 39,000 units, more than double the amount of units it sold last week.

Ooh Freedom War sales surpassed even Persona Q. I wonder how long Freedom Wars popularity will last?

    • Guest

It’s Japan. Hunting genre lasts long there.
You can even see God Eater 2 here, even though nearly a year old.
Of course the reason for GE2 being there is it’s inclusion in PSVita the Best category, but as you can see – the interest in it is still present.

      • Guest

Well I think the main reason you see GE2 there is because the best version just came out

  • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Freedom Wars doing well, this is just the kind of relief I needed to hear, plus a boost to Vita’s sales. My heart feels rested. I’m also happy to see MK8 selling still, I’ll have to secure my own copy before the 31st. Also of note, God Eater 2 Best version but…its debut was so low…I guess the word of mouth/selling power for the franchise isn’t as good.

    • Nonscpo

Nah I’d argue that everyone who wanted GodEater2 in Japan has probably already picked it up by now. At this point I’m more concerned for bamco not anouncing GodsEaterBurst2 for an international release when Gamescom or Tokyo Game Show comes up.

  • Mnoz

What’s the reason for the double handhelds sale number compared to last week ? For 3ds it’s probably yokai watch but what about the vita ?

    • Hexodious

      Probably Freedom Wars.

      • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

Love how a F2P title is included as part of the bundle.

        • Luna Kazemaru

that bundle and FWs are enough to push a few units atleast

          • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

True. And doesn’t Sony need it.

        • JonathanisPrimus

Nothing in that bundle is paid. Everything is either a demo, or a F2P game.

          • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

What about the Hatsune Miku one?

            • JonathanisPrimus

              Demo.

      • Jacob Thomas

Thank you for clearing that up. I thought the vita sales were some sort of mistake….and a cruel joke aimed at vita fanboys like me.

      • fyi1191

        saw Miku, instant value buy.

        • Budgiecat

          Why is Yakuza Ishin there?

          • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

            Is there a Vita version?

Edit: Maybe to promote remote play?

            • Budgiecat

              no there’s not.

          • JonathanisPrimus

There’s a companion app for Vita. It’s surprisingly thorough as it allows you to walk around and beat people up.

            • Budgiecat

of which you need the PS3/PS4 Yakuza game to use, so it seems silly to have it on the box as if its some stand alone game..

              • JonathanisPrimus

Actually, you can use the app in a standalone fashion. Obviously it’s better if you have the PS3/PS4 game, but there’s enough to do independently of that.

  • MrKappa

I really need to find out what Yokai Watch is about. How is that game selling so much? It has sold more than Mario Kart and even the first game is still selling like you wouldn’t believe.

    • Manny Being Manny

Its a kids game that has a super popular anime.

      • Renaldi Saputra

super popular anime? hmm, but, well, it’s true that the sales went up drastically after the anime airing

    • kurosan9712

It’s a Pokemon-like game with setting about traditional japanese horror-monsters.
It’s a L5 game, and it’s kids oriented. The first game was something like a first step, then, when the anime aired and everyone(every kid in freaking Japan) knew about it, the sales went up a ridiculous amount.
Thus, Youkai Watch 2 became a million seller in it’s first week.

If you don’t like Pokemon games – you shouldn’t even try it, btw.

Oh, and the anime is the best promotion, especially for kids games.

      • Budgiecat

wonder why Level 5 couldn’t do this before with Little Battlers and Ni No Kuni…

        • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

Ni no Kuni on DS did 500k first week though.

          • Budgiecat

            and dropped off HARD

            and Inazuma Eleven?

      • Hidayat246

thanks for your info because i never like pokemon

I wounder what is going to happen to the vita since apparently to some gaf posters Oreshika 2 is the last vita game scej is doing

    • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

and those Gaf posters would be crazy, especially after this week’s RISE in sales. I hope Oreshika 2 does well though.

    • Red Veron

They forgot about gamescom and TGS.

    • Guest

Nope, it will be last RPG game from them if it doesn’t do well. They definitely said they would rethink their strategy if Oreshika2 doesn’t sell well.

  • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

Yokai Watch 2’s debut total surpasses lifetime sales of the predecessor!?

    http://www.unnecessaryumlaut.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/damn_friday.jpg

  • Kuro-Law

Ok 3ds sales went up we were expecting that but why Vita it almost got to 40k.
Edit: oh I saw it already down the comment section

  • Budgiecat

PS4 sales pathetic as usual. Hopefully picks up later…

    • Guest

      So does WiiU.
Haha, so in the end MK8 can’t even helps WiiU eh ?

      • Budgiecat

Mario doesn’t really sell that well on consoles in Japan unless its 2D…

  • RSene

Why do we have two Yokai Watch 2 SKUs? One in first and another in third? What is this in the third position?

    • Mnoz

The third position is for Yokai Watch not Yokai watch 2.

      • RSene

Oh.. LOL, true! My bad, sorry.

    • fyi1191

      Pretty amazing right?

  • Budgiecat

    Pokemon
    Animal Crossing
    Monster Hunter
    Mario Kart 7
    Youkai Watch

these are the games Japan takes notice and buys in droves.
    the million dollar club.

    Everything else is niche.

    • http://www.gameanyone.com/DukeVerde DukeVerde

Your Mom is niche! <_< Freedom Wars forever.

      • Budgiecat

        Donchu talk ’bout mah’ momma!!

Freedom Wars is held prisoner by mediocre sales; there is no freedom and yes this is a war lol

        • http://www.gameanyone.com/DukeVerde DukeVerde

Ouch… Such a harsh play on words.

        • tubers

I hope more understood your wordplay xD

    • PrinceHeir

Vita needs these kind of games if they want to compete with the 3DS.

      • miyamoto

Don’t you worry what you said might just come true as Sony is shifting the Vita from a pure hardcore gaming machine to a well rounded and balanced platform for all types of gamers- young and old.

      • Guest

They already working on MH-like part, so far Freedom Wars has fantastic gameplay, Soul Sacrifice was meh, next is monster collecting games.

3DS did really well this week.

  • RSene

Imagine the day when these guys create a cross game between pokemon and Yokai…

  • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Huge jump for Vita hardware, most likely for Oreshika 2

  • Quetzalcoatl9999

And once again, 3DS keeps dominating hardware and software charts.

    • Budgiecat

      a bitter victory

      • Quetzalcoatl9999

        How so?

        • Budgiecat

Because overall, Japanese gaming industry is crumbling

  • BlueCereal

As expected the 3DS got a nice boost. On the other hand the Vita boost came out of nowhere.

  • TheBlackRabbit

They dont like god eater 2 huh? i’ll take it then XD

    • Luna Kazemaru

its a best of version that really isn’t adding much

      • TheBlackRabbit

O ok. do you know if the original versions sales were good?

        • shogunknight

They were ok, think it was in the regions of about 260k sales in japan

          • novurdim

260k in only first week. You probably forgot to follow numbers after that.

            • shogunknight

              Yeah i didnt, my mistake

        • Luna Kazemaru

          close to 400k

          • TheBlackRabbit

            wow nice…

  • shogunknight

Woot, watch that youkai number, our first million maker in a week (japan) this year. What the hell gave vita that huge bump?

    • garf02

      freedom wars

      • Alter

        value pack

  • Zechs

FW is doing well! :D And Yokai Watch 2… just wow, that’s insane.

  • Budgiecat

Now all Japan needs to do is make an exclusive 3DS Frozen game with ad-hoc MP and collecting ice giants and troll rocks Pokemon style

    • PrinceHeir

      It should be Vita :P

They even made a Frozen PS4 style theme!

    • shogunknight

That aside, i noticed Japan seems to be embracing the f2p freemium mobile gaming faster than i expected

      • Budgiecat

        yeah unfortunately
