Critically acclaimed PS3 game hitting the big screen.

The Last of Us

Just ahead of Tuesday’s release of The Last of Us Remastered for PlayStation 4, Sony Pictures announced at Comic-Con in San Diego that it’s bringing the critically acclaimed Naughty Dog hit to the big screen with a major motion picture.

The Last of Us is Naughty Dog’s second property to get the movie treatment, with Sony Pictures dating the Uncharted for June 10, 2016 just yesterday.

This stuff needs to be in the article:

Written by The Last of Us director Neil Druckmann (yes!), produced by filmmaker Sam Raimi (Spider-Man Trilogy), and with Maisie Williams (Arya Stark from Game of Thrones) possibly in talks to be Ellie.

The good staffing so far and the fact that Naughty Dog has creative controls should blow nearly all cynicism away.

    • Bob Obb

Please no, Maisie Williams looks nothing like Ellie

      • Unretributed

She doesn’t need to look like her, she just needs to act like her.

      • Zackasaur

She actually isn’t that far off and could get pretty close with makeup.

Furthermore, the more important thing is that she can play the part well.

    • Dick Mountainjoy

      Produced by Sam Raimi

So there’s like a 50% chance it will be total garbage?

Eh, still better than the producer MGS got.

  • Six

    I like the poster.

And I should probably play this game at some point.

    • Zackasaur

You should! You might as well get it Remastered when you get a PS4.

  • Elvick

Will be excited to see how this turns out.

  • MrKappa

Sony is milking the hell out of this and the story was not even all that great. Do they really have the money to be throwing around for nonsense like this?

    • Zackasaur

      1. The story IS that great. In fact, it’s better than that. But normative stuff, even if pretty comprehensively verifiable, isn’t really relevant here.

      2. “Milking” is a stupid concept people use when they don’t like something and don’t use when they do like it. You shouldn’t sink to using such an argument. Talk about nonsense…

      3. Sony have lots of money to spend towards earning more money. Demand for TLoU is high, and this should profit. They won’t have any money if they don’t make things that earn money.

      4. Sony’s films and games divisions are both quite successful parts of the company.

      • MrKappa

        1. I personally thought the story was ok but not so grand that it needed a movie.

        2. Milking is not a stupid concept, it is was people do to capitalize on their past work without moving on. It is not always a bad thing but in this case it seems vastly unneeded.

3 & 4. I guess if they have the money and this helps them out of the hole they are in then why not huh?

        • Elvick

You only think it’s “vastly unneeded” because you don’t like it. Thus the point.

          • MrKappa

My very first point was me saying I liked it so how do I not like it?
Sure I don’t think the story is some 10/10 masterpiece like most people but aside from the ending I enjoyed everything about the game very much, I even liked the MP.

            • Elvick

idk about you, but when I say something is “okay”. I didn’t really “like it”. Otherwise I’d say it’s good.

If it’s “okay”, then it could have elements I like or elements I didn’t. But overall it left no lasting impression.

So, if you did “like” the story. Then we have different ideas of what “okay” means. Thus the confusion.

    • shogunknight

      1. It was a good game for most people, everyone doesnt have to like it (i havent played the game yet for example)
      2. Sony has a movie studio
      3. Its a zombie style movie, not very difficult to do in this time tbh. Lots of similar films/series with talented directors/writers
      4. The preorders and/or demand is probably whats driving them to proceed with these plans

I wonder how one would have reacted if it was a mario/sonic movie

    • Budgiecat

      well… is M$ with Halo….

Now we just need Nintendo to make a Mario Bros movie…

    • TheBlackRabbit

story was good, but it was execution was done insanely well…the movie would have to do the same

  • shogunknight

Maisie Williams is also in talks to star as Ellie….hmmm

    • Zackasaur

      Sounds awesome.

    • Budgiecat

      She’s 17.
      typical Hollywood.

Why not be even more typical and cast a 25 yr old :P

      • DukeVerde

Would you prefer we go back to the days of child actors? <_<

      • MrFinalgamer

Dude have you seen her in Game of Thrones!? She’s perfect for the role (english accent, aside).

    • MrRobbyM

They should have just gotten Ellen Page. :*D

  • Budgiecat

I dun understand the point of this

Why make a movie based on a movie?

  • 罪罰

awesome! first the order 1884 and now a new the last os movie? damn gonna buy more popcorn

  • Karysonson

Isnt that what it already is? The game might as well be heavy rain! Lolololololo

    • Zackasaur

  • bf313

Two games that are basically movies getting made into movies, what a massive waste of time and money. I can already see TLOU bombing big time at the box office.

    • Elvick

      Neither are “basically movies”.

I swear people who say that stuff just don’t like third-person shooter gameplay. Because, they are excellent TPS. Genre defining imo.

Also, I doubt it’ll bomb if it’s done well.

    • Zackasaur

You have a pretty damn low opinion of what games are capable of being and don’t recognise anything when it exceeds that low standard.

And a poor understanding of how the box office works, as well.

      • bf313

“Blah blah games are high art, you just don’t understand” I’ve heard it a million times dude. I hate Naughty Dog games, it has nothing to do with my opinion on games in general or what they are capable of. Also you are deluding yourself if you think TLOU will be a financial success, it doesn’t have a chance in hell. If the movie is faithful to the source material it will be box office poison and if it goes for mass appeal it will be panned and people that enjoyed the games will say it’s another video game to movie flop. Apparently i’m just not up to the high standards of gaming that Naughty Dog sets right? People like you are part of the reason I hate Naughty Dog games.

        • Zackasaur

          You’re funny.

    • Ricky09

      Then don’t watch it. Simple.

  • BizarreJelly

There was so much motion capture done for the game that I think they should just get the game actors back to do additional work and spruce it up to be a CG animation. The game’s cinematic as it is and has generally solid performances, plus live action movies based on video games are pretty high on the miss counter.

  • Dick Mountainjoy

I feel the games plot is a bit too generic to be a successful drama, but might make a decent action flick like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

That being said, the short run time of a movie would definitely help the story, so much of the game is going to place looking for thing, only for thing to not be there.

  • BlueCereal

Wait didn’t they already announce this months ago?

    • Zackasaur

Nope! Are you perhaps thinking of Uncharted?

      • BlueCereal

No, I remember it was a few weeks or months ago it was announced. Maybe I’m just confusing it with some rumours.

  • kiri25

This not a dumb idea if done right. Just like with uncharted TLOU has potential to be a good movie. Tho the thing to remember is that fans of video games and fans of movies are not always one in the same.

This away for sony to tap into the movie goers and more revenue for their existing properties. The fan of the games will no doubt be the most difficult to please but those not familiar with the games may find these movies very entertaining. It’s also worth noting unlike the video game industry there is no exclusive there for everyone can enjoy these movies regardless of console preference.

    • Zackasaur

Basically all fans of games are fans of films, but not all fans of films are fans of games.

There is no barrier to access for films, assuming that you live in the right socioeconomic class. Whereas, games have a culture barrier, and intellect barrier (it takes more cognitive work to be a gamer than to watch things move on their own), a higher expense barrier, etc.

      • kiri25

I would say a good example of this would be resident evil. While i hope TLOU is actually good and accepted by gamers, the RE movies by many gamers would be classified as bad. However movie goers seem to enjoy them hence 5 movies and i belive the 6th in the works so they must also be profitable to get 6 movies.

So even if the gaming community hates the TLOU movie that does not mean it wont be a success..

  • 武神水樹

    Ellen Page hopefully

  • Invisbin

It needs Troy and Ash…..just needs it…

  • Pyrofrost

I didn’t play this on PS3. I’m wondering if I should get the PS4 version or just wait for this, hmmm.

    • Elvick

      Play tha game~

    • Zackasaur

Definitely get TLoU Remastered. It’s brilliant.

Even if this film turns out to be awesome (and I hope it is), any gamer should experience it in its original form first.

      • Pyrofrost

Yeah, I like TPSs for the most part. Well, I like RE and MGS and Syphon Filter 1-3, lol.

I dunno, I guess I’m really intrigued anytime I see something on this, but I just haven’t given in yet xD

        • Zackasaur

          Give in! :3

          It’s challenging, too. lol

  • chibuki

I was thinking the other day Gerard Butler with beard is pretty darn close as Joel lol

    • Ricky09

I think ansoun mount has the look, swagger, voice and charisma of Joel.

  • tokyobassist

I almost see it now. People taking a massive dump on this movie calling it typical zombie fare while praising the game like it’s the goddamn Citizen Kane of gaming. I’ve got 5 on it.

    • Bangarang

+1 for the Luniz throwback! Hahaha

    • soul_710

      Haa this made me lol

  • Lara Croft

I guess this pretty much confirms, there’s gonna be more Last of Us titles coming are way in the future. Which is a good thing :P

  • Ricky09

Hoping maybe they make a new story set in the same universe but with different charterers. Joel and Ellie has been told and there isn’t a need to re imagine it for another medium
