Criminal Girls: Invite Only

NIS America is bringing Criminal Girls: Invite Only, launched in Japan last year as Criminal Girls: Invitation, to PS Vita in North America and Europe in spring 2015, the publisher announced at Anime Expo.

The game is an updated version of the Japan-only PSP release Criminal Girls with a host of new content. Players will explore the depths of Hell and lead a gang of female delinquents on a quest to absolve themselves of their sins and be reborn on Earth. On the way, players will wrestle with the girls’ conflicting battle plans, keep them motivated through ‘one-on-one time,’ and uncover their deepest of secrets.

“Certain aspects” of the game have been edited for the localized release.

Find a trailer, summary, and a list of features below.

About

Seven delinquents, seven sins, and only one way out. Just hired for a new, mysterious job, you soon discover that this isn’t your normal prison gig. You’ve been entrusted with the care of a crew of girls whose sins have damned their souls to Hell and an eternity of punishment… Their only hope of salvation is for you to recognize their unique histories, and to guide them along the path to redemption. Navigate through the four trials of the Redemption Program, and motivate your crew of delinquents to learn the skills to redeem themselves, or leave them to their fate.

Key Points

  • Mind Your Manners: These girls aren’t your typical RPG team – they have minds of their own! To defeat the convicts doing their time in Hell’s dungeons, you’ll need to listen to your team’s desires, and choose your path to victory from the ever-evolving repertoire of skills, spells, and combo attacks that they want to use.
  • Touching Gameplay: Connect with the girls, and uncover each of their unique personalities through one-on-one motivational sessions with a unique use of the front touchscreen and rear touchpad, and fulfill the girls’ special requests to discover more about their interesting, and often dark pasts.
  • Criminal Girls, Reborn: This Playstation Vita update will mark the first time a Criminal Girls game makes its way to the US, and with English text! The update also brings previously unplayable characters into the fray—Miu and Himekami—and includes brand new scenarios and levels to challenge your prison smarts. It also revamps the much lauded motivational gameplay with updated artwork, and brand new Live2D graphics and effects.

  • Yaro

Cant wait for the inevitable censorship and removal of the minigame. Yay…

  • RedSuisei

I was actually hoping for Shin Hayarigami and more Experience titles :/

  • dark-kyon

Anyone believing what this game not gonna be censored is dreaming,it is not surprise if the whole punishment part is cut. eventhough of that props to nisa to bring this game to the west.

  • Varnes

Can we at least keep the mini-game? It’s hard to avoid censorship with this game but can we keep the mini-game XD

  • Josh Berrios

Honestly can’t believe this and a bunch of other titles are being localized, but it makes me ask if this is coming over, why not digimon cyber sleuth? Not saying that it’s not it’s just it looks like we have to fight for digimon but this gets sent over. Not saying this game is bad just surprised is all

  • Luna Kazemaru

lets see what gets cut :P

  • Kiryu

Too bad,the game looks charming but i don’t like the battlesystem. It’s still nice to see Vita getting some love from NISA.Waiting for the west anouncement of Hyperdimension Neptunia U and Gekishin Black Heart.

    Trailer and PR stuff added.

  • https://twitter.com/RyoonZ RyoonZ

This is why I always love JRPGStation.

  • Shippoyasha

Let’s just wait and pray they don’t butcher it with censorship.

The way they handled some games censorship as of late has been despicable. Also the way they said people who wanted a pure localization were a minority and ‘elitists’. I just see that company in a very negative light right now. Let’s see if they redeem themselves.

    • Max Eisenhardt

They do seem very abusive with their own forum community, I do not know why NISA fans stick around when treated like that

      • Shippoyasha

Speaking for myself personally, I stopped going to their forums and I want to support guys like Xseed who make it their policy to no censor things.

I was dying of stress when I was a regular poster there. It was like I was under attack by NISA admins. Just very strange why they’d do that.

    • Budgiecat

why do you care you probably imported it anyway…

      • Shippoyasha

Some people probably can’t speak or understand Japanese.

    • Elvick

I think they are the minority and elitists. So I agree with NISA.

People go full retard over any censorship. Like removing one mini-game destroys an entire game, or “butchers” it. That’s full retard right there.

      • Shippoyasha

The thing is that they can remove little things then they come to removing 120+ cards from Monster Monpiece. They jumped that shark of ‘minor censorship’ a long time ago.

Also, it’s not really too much to ask for games to stay as is. It’s just wanting games to be unchanged. It’s not like in the 90’s where people barely had any references to changed visuals. But nowadays, we can see it in a few seconds with Google as to what has changed. Granted, those who want gameplay only, great for you guys. Support the games you guys want to .

But I just wish NISA would stop treating purists like freaks or they are the enemies of the company. People are angry because they CARE about the games, not because they hate the games.

There is NO way this minigame is making it intact :/

                • Six

Did anyone really think it would? Doesn’t it involve rubbing girls who look like children or something?

I mean, c’mon. Just look at that picture I posted. I’m a fan of Senran Kagura, but that is just too much.

                  • Anime10121

                    You’d be surprised :/

There are people who legitimately think this is gonna come uncensored…

                    • Budgiecat

those people must also think Puff the Magic Dragon is real…

                    • Anime10121

                  • Luna Kazemaru

I’m not even sure why they brought it over if they know t would upset people on both sides

                    • Six

Pretty much. It’s a lose-lose at this point, so might as well just leave it in Japan.

                    • Luna Kazemaru

yeah pretty much no point in doing something if you aren’t going to go all in as i say

                  • Derp Minos

You are a prude idiot. Agarest 2 had stuff like that and wasn’t censored.

                    • Six

                      The fuck is an Agarest?

                    • Anime10121

He’s talking about Agarest Senki/Agarest War. I never played the sequel nor the prequel (and not much of the original), so I dont know if his comparison is actually warranted or not…

I just did a google search though, and at the very least, the cast at the least looked of age in Agarest.

But here’s some images/videos that may remind you of the series.

                    • Six

Do they always have to look so young? I just don’t understand the appeal.

                    • Anime10121

Meh, I’m honestly not bothered either way, not really my type of game (didnt even make it through the first chapter of Agarest 1), I’m understanding of the complaints on both ends, on one coin, their cartoons, so it doesnt really matter, and yet on the other side, there are precedent laws where people have been jailed/fined enough that it DOES matter!

But like I said, not my type of game anyway, so I dun really care. Like I said, I can understand why folks are upset when the biggest “appeal” of a game like this is getting edited out… but meh :P

                    • Six

Well, I’m just a “prude idiot”, so I need things explained to me. :P

The kind of prude who spends money on sexy anime DC figures and Kill la Kill statues.

                    • Anime10121

Dont pay it any mind… you know how… “passionate” folks get about stuff like this :/

              • Shippoyasha

I don’t see what the big deal is to be honest. Are people forgetting that no explicit nudity is involved or that it’s pure outrageous fiction AND it’s a niche title?

                • Six

You can justify it anyway you want. Like what you like, but when its stuff like this, don’t be surprised when people call you out for it.

                  • Derp Minos

Or we could call out people like you for being prude manchildren.

                    • Six

Sorry for not liking a game with masturbating 12 year olds.

                • Anime10121

You know I dont give a damn about anime fanservice, I’m totes ok with this, but American culture at large, nope :/

I mean, you honestly show this to someone not ingrained in our anime/Japanese gaming hobby, and they’ll likely wanna have you arrested or call you a pedophile. Does that make it true, hell no, but its just the way things are.

Being completely honest here, I’d prefer for this, Monster Monpiece, and any other loli fanservice game to come over untouched, but with the way things are, I’d wager it’d be incredibly risky, and neither NisA nor IF are large enough companies to deal with the melodrama it could “potentially” create. And I do say potentially, as there’s no way to know for sure if it’d actually even create any issues, but the chance is still there, and I’m sure NisA doesnt mind losing a few hundred to a couple thousand potential sales vs the likely 5-6 figure legal battles that could likely follow had they left it all alone.

    • Bob Slim

Well no buy for me I dont care anymore its just how nis is gonna be

  • RedSuisei

Huh, reading the announcement, I’m getting the feeling that the mini-game will still be there. Likely it’ll just be image censorship similar to Monster Monpiece instead of whole mini-game removal like in Mugen Souls.

    • kurbstar2

best-case scenario would be that they actually hired some artists this time to made modifications, instead of cut out the content entirely.

      Still not holding any hope

  • Gustavo

    F*** you NISA!

  • Syltique

Like I want to pay money for censored bullshit. It’s not like this is a cutting edge game honestly. They are cutting out what made it interesting from the sound of it, so naturally, it makes sense not really be all that interested now.

    • desponent

Not interested in the game either way but the reaction to any form of censorship, regardless whether the intent is legit or not, is quite amusing.

      • Altin

It’s very much like the “Dual Audio” debates that you see here every now and then. I still feel bad for the fans of this game though.

Well, at least we still got Xseed.

  • Varnes

Censored, surprise surprise, well let’s see what’s gone, i got Monpiece because i love monster girls and i needed a vita card game but i can easily pass on this NISA

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/chibuki chibuki

NISA tried guys. If anything, it’s our culture that won’t allow the fun stuff to pass the ratings board.

    • Six

Can I get the fun stuff that has older girls?

      • Budgiecat

People like to pretend that Japan itself as a whole isn’t facepalming at this stuff…

It’d be like us supporting the toothless shirtless horribly obese people with bad fashion sense strolling into Wal-Mart with ther ass crack hanging out saying “you don’t respect or understand our culture!!”

        • http://twitter.com/SrTirano MrTyrant

That’s true I even know that they call Compile Heart games kusoge, which I think it means shit games and they get pretty mad about them.

        • Six

          Grorious Nippon.

    • Gustavo

Tried what? They never submited the game to the rating board, it’s self-censored.

      • Elvick

Well, I’m sure if you pay for the first round, they’ll submit the original unedited version. Otherwise, it’s a business. They need to make intelligent decisions about where to put their funds.

And getting things rated multiple times to try to appeal to a bunch of whining brats online is hardly a good use of funds. Because if it fails, which it likely would, then they’d still have to censor the game and thus resubmit it and thus be out money and still not get those sales from unreasonable crazy people. Bad business.

        • Gustavo

Look everyone, it’s because of these people that they keep censoring the games. Don’t be like him.

    • kurbstar2

the ‘ratings board’ cop-out is getting a bit stale. Anything CERO D game would get a ESRB M. The ESRB has no different policy on sexual content than CERO

PEGI…..maybe. And I wouldn’t be surprised if the europeans are holding us back because NISA doesn’t want to do different versions for different regions

  • penemue

I don’t want to sound like a NISA employee or anything but, I want to support them, even if they censor some stuff, for bringing games like this and Hotl Cutie over, I understand other people won’t agree and that’s fine, but only a short while ago games like this would never come over, and I’d rather have them slightly edited and digital only than not at all.

    • Shippoyasha

The game is cute and fun and I don’t blame you for wanting it, censored or not.

For me though, Imports here I come. :(

    • buddyluv324

The problem with games like Criminal Girls is that even with the edited versions released, NISA still wont be able to make everyone happy. Take Monster Monpiece as an example. Certain content with the visuals of some of the monster girls got cut for the US release but even then there were still a number of gamers who avoided Monster Monpiece despite Idea Factory wanting to appease the US audience in hopes of reaching a broader audience. Basically whatever NISA cuts out for the US release of Criminal Girls, their efforts would most likely be of waste. They would not only piss away their original intended demographic but also trying to dig into a nearly dry well trying to reach to an audience thats beyond their demographic.

      • Elvick

It’s not about “reaching a broader audience”. It’s about being able to release the fucking game at all.

No one ever expected this game to be able to be released in the west, so figured it would never happen. Now NISA do it with some censorship, and they’re attacked for it.

        People are being dumb.

        • buddyluv324

Then why is it that a smaller game publishing company like XSeed have no problems releasing a games like Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus and SK: Bon Appetit uncensored ( with the exception of the girls’ actual ages but is still implied that the characters are high school girls), but NISA seems to have a hard time grasping that fact that their primary niche demographic that buy these games dont like paying full retail price for a gimped, half-assed localized version of a game originated in Japan.

It’s also a bit shaky for a company like NISA who has ( or maybe pretty soon HAD) that niche fanbase the publisher has their business based around say something along the lines of having to cut certain aspects of the game so to bring in as many fans as possible. This is showing red flags from a game publisher that’s cutting corners, showing a lack of faith for their demographic, and a lack of faith in the game they’re trying to advertise.

    • kurbstar2

any time they waste censoring a game should rather be spent on a (probably better) game that won’t get their panties in a bunch.

  • https://twitter.com/RyoonZ RyoonZ

I’m not interested in this game and my life certainly won’t get affected in anyway by the release of this game. But man, can we please ban this SICK FILTH from the face of the earth? This is just degrading and I’m really sad that people wanted to play this game. See? I’m such an educated individual with high moral standard and intelligence gamer. We don’t need this SICK FILTHY game from Japan, please Japan make game about KILLING PEOPLE, SHOOTBANG, HOOKER and SHIT. Because THAT’S a intelligence and high moral standard game design!

  • Quetzalcoatl9999

Can a brother get some Onechanbara Z Kagura? I feel like I’m the only person who remembers that game.

        • Budgiecat

was the newer 360 game ever localized?

          • Six

Z Kagura was the newer one. Two games made it over back in 2009 for the Wii and 360, but they cratered something fierce.

I’ve heard they are really bad, but Z Kagura was supposed to be pretty solid.

            • Budgiecat

the fact that I barely even know this means the marketing effort must of been shit…

        • Shippoyasha

Ha. I just like cutesy/moe/risky sexual stuff mixed together. May as well go all the way with risque if they are at it. Even then, it’s filtered through Sony’s prudish standards anyway.

    • Final Agent

Isn’t she one of the only designs we’ve seen so far? For all you know, the rest of them could just be nothing but lolis and a guy called Pablo. A little early to be calling for that PC version localization.

  • MrKappa

I just don’t care for NISA localizations anymore, the only games I buy day one are new Disgaea games.
Anything else is bought used or not at all.

    • Budgiecat

Honestly Disgaea is the only real respectable IP they have so go figure..

      • http://twitter.com/SrTirano MrTyrant

I would like to bet at anything that Disgaea team has to offer since I enjoyed ZHP, La pucelle, Makai Kingdom, Phantom braver and Soul nomad a lot in the past. I didn’t like much fate paradox but I will still give an opportunity to the new one.

About localization. I’m glad they localizing Danganroppa.

        • Budgiecat

well I should say *still are making* then.

And yeah I’m glad they’re localizing Danganronpa too; and I’d much rather them localize the spinoff than this..

          • Six

Does the spin-off even have a JP date yet? It might be too soon.

            • Budgiecat

Well, the reason I mentioned it, was, before these announcements, when teasing them the NIS guy recently tweeted something to the effect of “and before you ask, no it’s not the Danganronpa spinoff”, which just seemed kinda rudely odd…

      • Shippoyasha

Too bad Disgaea is actually censored as well.

      • novurdim

yeah, who cares about danganronpa, right?

        • Budgiecat

nice of you to ignore my other posts below..

…besides the fact that Danganronpa is first & foremost a Spike developed and published game; published in U.S. only by NIS….

          • novurdim

in Europe too. And if you look closely at the beginning of our little chat…
            >I just don’t care for NISA localizations anymore

            • Budgiecat

              well thats just dandy

  • Bob Slim

If the lolis is the reason they censored it, Why dont they just edit the lolis and, Leave the rest of the girls alone I dont even like lolis, Why must everything get edit cuz of a few lolis really. I wish Japan would make these games without lolis at all do they love lolis that much. I can go on and on but jeez stop the lolis japan I hate censored games

    • Six

      lolis

      loli loli lolis.

  • Its censored AHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • PrinceHeir

Ehhhh it’s censored, then again i already have a big backlog waiting to be finish.

I do want the sequel, but ehh just import it for the uncensored one.

  • Akari Akaza

    This sucks…>_<

  • kurosan9712

Please be enjoying your censorship. (c) NISA

As if anyone sane would eat that shit of NISA’s.
If I could platinum the game twice – I’d do it. Sadly, I can’t.

‘One on one time’… Vita… Gods be praised, its a good time to be a vita owner, this game is going to be fun on a bun! or so i hope

    • Daniel Rossevelt

Wait this game is censored, NOOOOO! well but maybe yes? i might still pick it up. but this lowers the chances a lot.

  • TiamatNM

Well thanks NISA for telling us right away as usual. Now I know not to buy the game. -_-

  • Kyosuke Yoshino

Oh my god, I have to wonder what’s the point the release a game like this being censored? Thankfully I have already played the Japanese version…

  • Pyrofrost

    >> “Certain aspects” of the game have been edited for the localized release.

  • TiamatNM

“Certain aspects” of the game will cause it to crash and we will never fix it – NISA

  • Elvick

    lol, people are so annoying.

“With the nature of Criminal Girls, it’s understandable we’ll never see it outside of Japan”
*NISA make it possible to bring over with some censorship*
“OMG YOU SUCK ASS NISA NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOU AND YOUR STUPID CENSORSHIP HURR”

A game we’d never get otherwise is being released here, and people bitch.

    Shoo.

    • Pyrofrost

I’m not interested in the game either way, which is why I didn’t even consider importing.

However, you can’t blame people for losing interest now that it’s less than 100% of the game, but will still be 100% of the retail price (at least $30~$40 USD). It’s just like the instance where people lost interest in the Western version of Monster Monpiece.

These localizations aren’t favors that people should just be grateful for, regardless of the condition they come West in.

      • Budgiecat

then don’t bring shallow pandering crap over; we’re not missing much anyway…

can we focus on localizing actual good games?

        • Pyrofrost

NISA pretty much stopped localizing good games (outside of their own), when they lost the rights to localize Gust’s work.

We’re talking about NISA here, it’s not like they’re a company that’s boiling over with incentive for good devs to reach out to them.

          • Budgiecat

So nothing of value was lost…

            • Pyrofrost

              You don’t like Gust games?

    • Hork

If they can’t localize it correctly, they shouldn’t localize it at all. Censorship is wrong, and supporting it is just as wrong.

  • Maria Garcia

certain aspects of my wallet wont buy this game

    • Chestnut Bowl

Dust isn’t an acceptable currency anyway!

  • Chestnut Bowl

    Why bother?

  • devilmaycry0917

    censorship
    digital only
    english dub
—– the HIV virus in the localisation of games

    • Budgiecat

a bigger virus is the overall lack of good console/handheld games coming from Japan and focus on mobage…

      • dark-kyon

good,i guess what you speak japanese to know what every game unstranslated is bad,if not you testament is false, severals good games are keep in japan for several reason how licensing, censoring, bad publishers, etc.

        • Budgiecat

          Was that even English?

          • novurdim

Prolly not, but he has a point. I would love to see about 25 jap games for vita localized, kind of silly to talk about the lack of good handheld games coming from Japan in a situation like this.
PS/ Criminal Girls isn’t one of them but, oh well, I’ll somehow deal with it.

  • Learii

uh… can someone tell me why everyone so mad that this game localized?

    • novurdim

because retardation, my friend, is a hard burden to carry.

      • Hork

Don’t be an idiot. It’s a censorship controversy, because censorship is wrong.

  • SatsukiYumizuka

    >Criminal Girls: Invite Only coming west

Should just lock these posts, they’re getting repetitive and insulting. -_-

    • Pyrofrost

An opinion that’s different from yours is ≠ to an insult.

  • Eldhin Hellknight

“Certain aspects” of the game have been edited for the localized release… great, another censored release…

  • Audie Bakerson

Feels good to be learning the language and not have to deal with the censorship.

    • kurosan9712

Let me correct this. It’s good to HAVE already learned the language , so you don’t have to deal with censorship(like me).

  • Dewey Defeats Truman

“‘Certain aspects’ of the game have been edited for the localized release.”

Do these people just not realize that these “certain aspects” are the only reason 99% of people buy these kinds of games? They aren’t my kind of game and I wasn’t gonna buy it anyway to be fair, but I’m still disgusted not as somebody who wants uncensored games (though I do,) but purely because I realize this is a massive violation of common sense.

  • Mana

“”Certain aspects” of the game have been edited for the localized release.”
And into the trash it goes.

  • Hork

Looks like Criminal Girls is being added to the “morally not allowed to buy” pile. When will those morons learn?
