Assassin's Creed: Unity

Ubisoft has released a new trailer for Assassin’s Creed: Unity introducing “Elise the Fiery Templar,” a new character “central” to the game’s story.

Elise is an independent young noblewoman determined to secure her place in the Templar dynasty amidst the chaos of the French Revolution. Her quests leads her to cross paths with Arno, Assassin’s Creed: Unity‘s master assassin, with whom she establishes an unlikely bond. In the video, you’ll see Arno race against time to rescue Elise from a beheading.

A new novel by Oliver Bowden from Penguin Random House, also titled Assassin’s Creed: Unity, will also feature Elise. Here’s a story summary:

The story examines an era when the divide between the rich and poor is at its most extreme, and a nation is tearing itself apart. Told from Elise’s perspective, “Assassin’s Creed Unity” follows her and Arno as they are drawn into the centuries-old battle between the Assassins and Templars. In a world with dangers more deadly than they could ever have imagined, they must fight to avenge all they have lost. “Assassin’s Creed Unity” builds on Bowden’s past Assassin’s Creed novels with millions sold to-date.

  • Zackasaur

This game can have all my want.

  • BossTuff

Fiery, strong willed female character who inevitably has to be rescued by the main character. Seems legit.

    • Locksus

Yes, because it’s absolutely IMPOSSIBLE for a WOMAN to ever be caught for supposedly committing a crime. That’s just misogyny, amirite?

      • gulabjamal

I can assure you that after I Google misogyny, you will most probably be right.

        • Locksus

Misogyny is hatred of women. I see absolutely no hatred or dislike towards women in this trailer.
Or does a woman being saved by *gasp*.. wait for it…A MALE sound like hatred towards women?

      • BossTuff

It’s not impossible, but would you say that it happens more often than not in the current generation of games? Does strong willed mean that she will eventually step out of line and have to be rescued?

        • Locksus

If you ask me, having to be saved from being executed doesn’t make you any less strong-willed or independent.
Unless the issue here is that she’s saved by a male, which makes it even more ridiculous.

          • BossTuff

You’re getting pretty defensive about this topic.

I think it’s a tired trope that should be phased out.

            • Locksus

And I think people are too sensitive and are reading too much into it.

              • BossTuff

I know right? I mean, who cares about equal representation in the entertainment medium of their choice? Those silly women are just being sensitive and reading too much into it.

                • Locksus

Except that’s not what I was saying at all.

I think it’s stupid getting worked up over a trailer like this. It just shows a woman trying to be executed (And the man before her actually being executed). That’s hardly misogyny or w/e you want to call it.

                  That’s how I see it.

                  • BossTuff

I think how you and I see it is completely different because we’re males.

However, from the objective perspective, Ubisoft is not really doing anything to engender (harhar) any good will with this. It seems like there is a desire to have a female lead character in an AC series, and instead they provide an NPC who is described in the cliche “strong willed” who also happens to need saving. That speaks of a tired cliche (as stated above) and really something they should be held accountable for.

                    • Locksus

I am not going to respond to that, considering we’d get nowhere because both of us have different points of views on the matter.

                    • Budgiecat

                      pleeease

                    • Shippoyasha

What a ridiculous thing to say. They are not accountable to do anything. Ubisoft actually is really good with female representation. Try Child of Light.

The only people making this a giant issue are social justice warriors who has turned it into a militant talking point. This is a bandwagoning mob ‘controversy’.

There is a difference from appealing for more female characters and the way people are setting Ubisoft on fire this way.

                    • BossTuff

Did you try Watch_Dogs? The female representation in that game was amazing.

I am no social justice warrior and I don’t view it as a militant talking point, but there is no doubt that this appears ridiculous. There are great ways to create strong female characters, it just appears that Ubisoft is neglecting to do so in this case.

If you don’t hold a company accountable for what they do, then they won’t change. I don’t see it as unreasonable for people to go after Ubisoft on this, especially if they listen. There are multiple examples of things like this working out for the better, most notably Microsoft and how they were approaching this generation with the XBO.

                    • Shippoyasha

Watch Dogs was fine. The protagonist was trying to save people in that game. And every character both male and female had dirt on them due to the NSA spying parody element of the game. The game would have been largely the same if it had a female lead.

And I fail to see how Ubisoft is being neglectful. They are a lot more proactive than they are made to be. It seems everybody forgot they did Child of Light and put in a lot of female characters in Rayman games even if it was not really necessary to have engendered characters in Rayman. They had female characters in Assassin games since Brotherhood as well.

Speaking of characters needing to be saved, pretty much every Assassin protagonist needed to be saved before. And I never heard of people thinking Ezio, Altair and Conner were emasculated for being saved by women or even old men. Assassins being caught happens a lot in the series as well. This isn’t like them picking on the girl character due to her gender.

Let’s not forget that the stories in Assassin games do flow. So there are going to be several moments later in the game for rescued characters to shine.

                    • Elvick

So because she’s rescued by a man at some point, she’s not a strong female character?

That is foolish. A character is not defined by one instance. Get outta here. You are being “silly”.

                  • Budgiecat

                    this is a maaaaaaaaaaan’s world….

But it would be nothing, nothing
                    Not one little thinnnng…
Without a women or a girrrrrl

            • Shippoyasha

Oh that trope word again. It should be a matter of a story being done well, not whether we phase out cliches on basis alone. We don’t handcuff storytellers just because they retread old ground. Let them tell it the way they want.

      • Anueu

Of course it’s possible. Doesn’t make it any less of a tired cliche.

      • Budgiecat

listen you can’t win either way with the SJW task force…

    • Budgiecat

She looks cool. I would like to play as her…

    • Elvick

      Who gives a fuck?

He rescued her, and they’re going to fight their way out together. Ooooh, such a victim, much misogyny, so wow.. God forbid someone need help, then they’re not strong. Pa-lease.

      Whining about nothing.

  • natchu96

So now we have a seeming heroine in an Assassin’s Creed game who is a Templar. What else is new?

  • Shippoyasha

Big freaking brouhaha over nothing. People are itching to get outraged at anything. I bet people will find ways to complain even now.

    • Unretributed

They’ll complain that she was rescued by a man.

      • KingNigma

        Was she not?

        • Unretributed

Of course she was, did you not see?

        • César H. Sandoval

Yeah, but they will say that being rescued by a male instead of being able to do it herself, is sexism
          .

          • KingNigma

And that bothers you more than the sexism itself?

            • César H. Sandoval

LOL neither She being rescued by a man, nor the fact that some people would call it sexism botthers me, I’m just pointing to the fact the other poster was signaling and you didn’t seem to get before.

i.e that no matter what they do, people will always complain about it, this game is tainted by that already.

  • Six

It’s obvious what Ubisoft must do to make up for all the drama they’ve caused.

Make an Assassin’s Creed game set in Feudal Japan with a female lead.

    • Budgiecat

Everytime a Western developer has tried to emulate Japan it always comes out inaccurate and stereotypically cheesy.

I bet this is why they’ve shied away from it so far…

  • Not_Isaac

People will still bitch and moan. There’s no pleasing them.

    • Ryab Fiffey

I’m sure they’ll judge her entire character from this one video and go on about how she’s just an object for the cis white male to rescue.

  • shogunknight

Well, i guess this ends the shots being fired at them……will it?

  • 罪罰

    The Tumblr force succeeded.

  • kusanagi25

so we are getting a Romeo and Juliet story??

  • Max Eisenhardt

But do you play as her?

Pretty sure the outcry was more because there’s no playable females in Unity and in CO-OP everyone is just Arno

    • Zackasaur

This isn’t them apologising for anything. This is an aspect of the game that was sealed years ago, way before the announcement, yet alone before the outcry.

      The two are totally unrelated.

      • KingNigma

It’s as if people think this character was just created in response to the controversy like wut??

        • Elvick

What’s funny, is when I saw the article, I knew people would act like that. lol

Like a game coming out this year (or is it early next?) could have a drastic change in sex for a main character in the story. Please.

    • Infinity

      I highly doubt it.

  • Mikail

and after this the fan will ask Ubi to have vampire character Lol ^_^

    • http://www.di.fm Spicy Chicken

Dude that’s actually an awesome idea.

DARK FANG, the Rogue Vampire Assassin your mother warned you about…
“Oh sure, I like blood, but now… IS THE TIME FOR JUSTICE!!!!”

  • Infinity

It’s like Woodkid songs really fits in well with every Assassin Creed series.

  • rainelee

    Hmm, so another Altair/Maria pair?

  • Lara Croft

    I like her design.

  • Bob Obb

They introduce a female and of course she has to be rescued by a man. Naturally she can’t be the one rescuing a man!

    • Pirate Man

I’m sure if you brush up your history lessons first then read the bloody article you should be able to pick up why. What do you do at school these days sit on your ass and learn nothing?

  • Six

All drama and bullshit aside, no one makes trailers like Ubisoft. The song choices are always superb.

    • BossTuff

Without a doubt, I’ll still end up picking this up because I’m a sucker for these games.

      • Six

I played about an hour of AssCreed II, and that’s been it. If funds allow, I might jump in at this one.

If I’m able to end my constant back and forth and pick which current-gen machine I want, anyway. :P

        • BossTuff

I think all three are great (counting wii U) and it’s really up to your preference. There’s pros and cons but in the end it’s what you want to go with.

    • Budgiecat

I can make one I just dun feel like it…

    • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

Yeah the game’s gonna be pretty good I bet. Gonna take up my whole Oct.

    • http://www.di.fm Spicy Chicken

Hmm, I half agree. Their trailers are usually brilliant, especially AC ones, but this one less so to be honest (not bad, but nowhere near as breathtaking as some of their other ones). The thing that really killed it though was that super cheesy voiceover at the end. I could only think of the ‘Honest Trailers’ guy, who’s awesome (and actually sounds a bit cooler than this), but then those are intentionally funny anyway so it works. Here it just ruined the mood for me.

“Order NOW for ALL. THESE. EXTRA’S!!!! Spin to win, BABY! SPIN TO WIN!!!!”

      Ahem. >_>

  • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

I haven’t been keeping up, but good heavens I didn’t realize there was all this drama. I’m confused, did people forget about Aveline? Does she not matter in all this demand/drama to make some kind of female assassin?

    • Six

The drama will continue until Ubisoft makes Assassin’s Creed: Sisterhood.

… damn, I’d buy the hell out of that. :P

      • Budgiecat

only if there’s group shower scenes

    • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

Fair point. But think of it this way, there’s been 4 or 5 males and 1 female. Time for one more I’d say, at least.

      • Elvick

Eh, some industries have more males than female in the workplace because women don’t want those jobs.

We should get over the “we need a certain ratio of male and female” nonsense. That’s not equality.

        • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

Well, to each their own. It’s important to me, but it’s not worth arguing about over the net.

      • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

I’m all for more. Very much so. I just don’t think its cool to simply forget about her (Aveline), or act like she doesn’t count.

        • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

I liked her game, I even like playing as her in that DLC for AC4. I hope they show her more! But I think since she’s not connected to Desmond maybe they won’t. Unless from now one ACs won’t be based around Desmond’s past or heritage.

To me, the best part of her game was the long battles I’d have on rooftops and that huge brawl at the end of the game. The way the music played… dramatic and epic!

    • Bob Obb

You mean that low budget PSP game?

      • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

They also brought it to PS3/360/PC. Regardless of budget — The game was good and is relevant here imo.

    • DrForbidden

Unless I’m mistaken, the controversy is that the other 3 assassins (the MP playable characters) that assist Arno are all male, not that there has never been a female Assassin.

      • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

Ah. I see. Well, while I do find that odd, I’m not sure it warrants the drama it’s currently getting.

  • CirnoTheStrongest

“Her quests leads her to cross paths with Arno, Assassin’s Creed: Unity‘s master assassin, with whom she establishes an unlikely bond”
    Uh….yeah…”unlikely” >.>

  • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

Likely she may be the first Templar to become an assassin instead of the other way around.

    • DrForbidden

That honour probably falls to Altair’s wife Maria.

      • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

I forget who that is. Was she in AC4?
There needs to be more Assassins in modern day too, the templars have all but won. Assassins are getting out numbered and out-gunned. I understand they’re underdogs, but at a certain point it starts looking bleak. SO I hope more Templars see the light.

        • DrForbidden

The first AC game, actually. I definitely agree with you about the future looking bleak for Assassins. Unless more assassin cells are revealed to have survived, they’d have to pull a superpowered deus ex machina. Right now it seems that Desmond’s dad, Rebecca, and Shaun are the only ones that are still fighting.

          • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

I remember a woman templar impersonating the guy Altair was chase in AC1.
Yeah and 3 assassins vs. multi-billion dollar corporations and a dark underworld of organized crime are a bad match-up. Maybe the future games will be able finally taking the temps down from inside.

  • Budgiecat

Aw man Anita Sarkeesian is gonna have a field day with this one…

    • Six

I think it’s just more likely that people are going to get outraged over someone else’s hypothetical outrage.

      • Budgiecat

        And thats her intention…

        • Six

Anita isn’t out to get you, you know.

          • Budgiecat

She is out to troll and she knows people feed her…and that includes her haters and blind supporters…and even worse, some of the gaming industry now..

            • Six

She and her Kickstarter would have faded into obscurity if people didn’t THREATEN TO RAPE HER.

The gaming community made her, and now they have to live with her.

              • Elvick

Oh please. Those were trolls, not serious threats. She cited comments like “show me your boobs” as evidence of sexual harassment. When it’s just a troll.

                • BossTuff

I take it you’ve never had to go through “sexual harassment” training then?

                  • Elvick

Internet comments are not the same thing as real harassment. GTFO

                    • Six

                      lol wat

                    • Elvick

The internet has trolls who say things with the purpose of getting a rise. Real life does not have that to the extreme that the internet does. They want to laugh at your reactions.

You can’t act like the internet and real life are parallels. It’s like people thinking pedobear is actually a tool pedophiles use, rather than a gag of the internet.

                      Don’t be dumb.

                    • Six

But it affects people in real ways.

                      http://www.meganmeierfoundation.org/statistics.html

I guess people just need to grow thicker skin, right? All those kids who were pushed to suicide should have just sucked it up.

                    • Budgiecat

those statistics are pooling regular bullying together with cyber bullying, which makes it blended…

theres a big difference between someone kickin the crap out of you and ridiculing you in public everyday where you go to school vs online where you can just…not log on to wherever they are

                    • Six

                      http://www.polygon.com/2014/7/22/5926193/women-gaming-harassment

“Women are the niggers of gender,” the email said. “If you killed yourself, I wouldn’t even fuck the corpse.”

I blinked at my phone, fighting simultaneous urges to hurl my phone across the room in anger and cry. Later that day, someone texted me my address — telling me they’d “See me when I least expected it.”

Guess she should just get a new email address. And a new phone number too.

                      Oh, and move.

                    • Elvick

That’s not the same thing Anita showed herself. She showed youtube comments, that you find on everything. And they can be vicious for anyone. Trolls don’t discriminate. They just pick people who give good reactions.

She can call the police and report anything she feels is a real threat.

There is a huge difference between faceless, anonymous threats and threats from people who have been physically harassing you in day to day life.

But this is getting off topic. (Final side note though; there was a spam message a few years ago that basically said there were a trained marine that would hunt you down and either kill or beat the shot out of you, welcome to the internet, where even spam wants to do pysical harm to you).

                    • Budgiecat

“sticks and stones”… you know the rest…

but waiiit….suicide > getting new email addy, phone #, calling law enforcement..

                    • BossTuff

I’m sure there are plenty of articles that would disagree with that statement. Actually this was on the first page of googling “do internet comments count as sexual harassment”:

                      http://www.equalrights.org/legal-help/know-your-rights/sexual-harassment-at-school/

I’ll give you the exact quote though:

In addition, many forms of bullying or cyberbullying are actually sex-based harassment that is prohibited under Title IX. For example, prohibited harassment may include behaviors such as using cell phones or the internet to target students by calling them sexually charged epithets like “slut” or “whore”; spreading sexual rumors; rating students on sexual activity or performance; disseminating compromising photographs or videos of a student; or circulating, showing, or creating emails or websites of a sexual nature. This kind of conduct may be prohibited harassment if it is severe, persistent, or pervasive.

Cyberbullying is very real, and even though you may have thicker skin than other people when it comes to internet comments, it makes it no less an issue.

                • Six

It doesn’t matter. Gamers made who her she is and there is no going back.

If they wouldn’t have harassed her she’d be irrelevant right now.

                  • Budgiecat

If some random gamer haters made her who she is, why is Neil Druckman of the Last of Us handing her an award for Ambassador of the Year at the Game Developer’s Choice Awards at the GDC and citing her as influence for the creation of his game characters?

              • Budgiecat

                I know dis……mang

she prodded and poked and now her fame was risen because of them, but make no mistake, she’s just another failed journalist attention seeking blogger that doesn’t even care about games; just using it as a niche window for her to do her feminazi ranting so she can get paid.

It always comes down trolling for $. Everything…

                • McPoo

Tbf, if I could get paid for trolling, I would. Fair play to her for making a living out of it.

  • AdamBoy64

Elise is a really nice name.

    • Budgiecat

      I like…Lotus Elise…

    • Supsharoo.

elise its not some dumb name

      get it?

  • DjangoRaijin

Did no one even read the article? She got caught probably because she’s a templar noble during a revolution between the rich and poor not just because shes a woman. I swear, people will find anything to bitch about these days.

    • Gigus

Guess we’re not allowed to enjoy video games anymore.

    • Elvick

Well, even if that’s what they thought… they killed two dudes before her. So it’s clearly not a woman thing.

  • Gigus

    Hmmm this really looks interesting.

  • Impressionnant

I hope I get to kill some Jacobins.

  • PrinceHeir

She looks cool, kinda reminded me of Fem Shep default appearance

    • AnimusVox

Too bad fem ship default in game looked like a sac of potatoes with lips :L

  • Invisbin

    Keep up the good work

  • BossTuff

It’s a tough, thankless job, but someone has to do it.
