Tales of Zestiria will hit the west the same year it hits Japan

Bandai Namco shortening the gap between Japan and western releases.

Tales of Zestiria

When Tales of Xillia launched in North America and Europe, it was two years after the game’s release in Japan. When Tales of Xillia 2 launches in August, it will also be two years following the game’s Japanese release. But with Tales of Zestiria, Bandai Namco aims to change that.

“One of the big things was, ‘It’s taking so long between the Japanese release and when the western releases come out,'” Dennis Lee, global brand manager for the Tales series, said during an E3 interview. “And so, over the past, I’d say, two years, they’ve been working really hard to shorten that time frame.

“We’ve gone from over two years with Xillia 1, and now we’ve gotten it down to a year, and we’re going to get it to less than that for Tales of Zestiria—it’s going to be in the same year as the Japanese release. So they’re working on shrinking that time down as much as possible.”

A release date for Tales of Zestiria is still to be announced.

    Japan = Early 2015
    North America = Late 2015

Yeah, it will be the same year alright, lol. Simultaneous worldwide releases should be standard these days, honestly.

    • http://www.gameanyone.com/DukeVerde DukeVerde

      *should*

Except it’s never going to happen. Well, actually, it might happen…but you’ll be dead that late.

    • http://kougeru.tumblr.com/ Kougeru

Given how “small” this franchise’s audience is, it’s not financially feasible for them yet. Unless they delay the JP release anyway. I hardly ever seen JRPGs get simultaneous worldwide releases and the reason for that is obviously because RPGs are heavy on dialogue which leads to lengthy translation times. I don’t blame them at all. 9 Months or so is a fine wait for me. I can barely afford to buy all the games in a year that I do manage.

    • kaotron

it happens the other way around too, where western games take a longer time to come over to japan and some games don’t even localize at all. It’s expected that the country that made it usually will get it first.

Tales is super niche around here to the point where I”m surprised it’s even being local at all. I was expecting this game late next year(q3/q4) anyway so it’s not all that surprising..

      • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Yeah, I know it works that way in Japan too. I’m just saying they should do away with all this waiting nonsense all around and make a simultaneous worldwide release a standard. That and region free consoles should be the norm.

It’s 2014 for crying out loud.

        • kaotron

yeah, waiting 3 months to a year or two+ used to annoy me when waiting for localization but I don’t really mind it all that much now since I play most games after they’ve been out for while(hell, I just completed xillia1 the other day).

I remember playing gracef in early 2013 thinking that this game was a 2010 remastered version of a wii game made in ’09 which kinda turned me off though.

          • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Yeah, I import 99% of my games at this point, so I don’t have to worry about the wait, but… It just kind of breaks my heart at times to see fans suffer, especially if I know how great the game is from playing it myself.

            • kaotron

I wish I could just instantly learn the language and just import every game so the whole localization thing would never be a problem for me ever again but I was never willing to put the effort.

The whole legend of heroes series for example may probably never come over.

              • Budgiecat

the people who run these companies are morons (see Capcom)

                • kaotron

yeah, most companies are afraid that it wont make profit while some other companies don’t localize unless they think it’ll sell like a hundred million copies(unrealistic sale expectation).

while the legend of heroes series is so far behind it may as well just give up, it’s like the final fantasy series if they didnt localize any games past 7.

The main thing I hate about capcom isnt their lack of localizations but the constant rehashing of street fighter(and packing it with on-disc dlc) and ruining resident evil.

                  • Budgiecat

Personally I think they should just release the 2 PS3 3D JRPG’s to the West, continuity be damned…

FF was different though because each new game had its own stories (unless it was a direct sequel/prequel like X-1, Dirge, Crisis Core, Revenant Wings, XIII-2, XIII LR)

      • Budgiecat

Japan recently lost a major localizer

  • bloodiOS

    That’s an improvement at least.

  • MyBodyIsReady

Why not shorten that God eater and Digimon gap too eh namco? ;)

    • Elvick

      From never to 5 years.

      I’ll take it…

      • http://lukalovesgames.blogspot.de/ Alkaid

        me too tbh….

  • Rebellion14

Damn kinda got excited thinking they meant simultaneous……
But this is definitely an improvement, hopefully the difference is no more than 3 months or so (wishful thinking, I know…)

    • kaotron

yeah, I misread it too as a global release but at least this is progress(better than being a year+ apart..)

  • Hatsuaki

Offering release dates within a 12 month period for the entire west (I assume they meant Europe and US when saying that) is already very good, I’d say they can shorten it to 9-10 months actually considering how usual Tales games tend to work in terms of text. If you’d told me that Tales localizations were going to work like this a few years ago, I probably wouldn’t even have believed it haha

Hearts R is already getting localized within less than two years, so I really don’t see how people weren’t expecting this. The only reason the Xillias took later to localize was because they didn’t really plan on localizing them right after Xillia was released in Japan; it was a very good selling game (and I’m not sure about the highest selling game in the series?), so it made sense to give the west a shot with it. And it would be very stupid to skip Xillia and localize Xillia 2 only. Now that they know there’s a fanbase outside Japan, it gives them all the more reason to work better and faster.

So yes, here’s to more Tales worldwide, and here’s to a 25th anniversary in the future haha.

EDIT: I just noticed they said it’d be released in the SAME year as Japan… did they word that wrong or did they just spill the beans that the game is only hitting stores in 2015 for Japan, which was already expected but still…? Unless they meant to say “within a year [from japan’s release date]” and I’m just interpreting it wrong.

    • Pyrofrost

At this point, I’m going to assume they mean within the same year (ie: 12 month duration), not necessarily the same calender year. Though with how it’s put in the article, it can be interpreted either way.

  • DriftSlave

At least they are trying to localize their games. Sega would rather sit on their hands.

    • kaotron

I sigh everytime I see a new post about shining resonance…

    • Budgiecat

they dont give a shit anymore; since merging with Sammy, Japanese casino giant, they’re swimming in $ and can be complacent

      • DriftSlave

More or less, that honestly seems to be the case.

  • DarthBrian

    Excellent news! ^_^

  • http://twitter.com/M_Demolish Demolish

all Tales series releases in summer,

in short,Tales of Zestiria will release in July or August 2015 ( I hope. )

    • new_tradition

I can dig that. Persona 5 is sort of hinted to be a Winter-Spring release in NA and hopefully EU, so that’s two major PS3 games nicely spread out for me in 2015 ^^

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

two years would have killed the series in the west considering how fast we are moving to the next gen consoles,, 2015 is still kind of late as most of us have moved on and not really using ps3 anymore. Ill hope a cross gen version is made, or otherwise hope my ps3 stays in shape for the wait.

Tales of PS4 needs to be revealed.

  • Akari Akaza

I hope they succeed on getting this the same year and month, or 2 to 3 months late after Japan…..^_^

  • Elle

Eh I’m not waiting a year (time window). I will be importing if it comes out this year in japan.

  • Anime10121

Confirming a 2015 release everywhere is pretty much what I figured :P

  • Pyrofrost

Well that kills what people assumed would be a simul-release.

That would kinda put it on point with my prediction of a late 2014 JP release, with a Summer-ish 2015 release in the West. With that said, I will be importing.

    • Anime10121

I dont get how folks believed it would be simultaneous to begin with…
I dont understand how people figured worldwide release = a simultaneous one. They mean two completely different things

      • Pyrofrost

True, it was likely just peoples hopes combined with what NBGI did with Vesperia on the 360. They released that one about a few weeks apart. So a simul or near-simul release could have been feasible, since it was done before.

        • Anime10121

But even so, Vesperia was an unusual situation. It was when Microsoft was pushing HARD on the genre and it was said to be a simultaneous release when the Japanese release date got announced if I recall correctly (it ended up getting delayed a couple days/weeks for the western release though).

The way Zesty’s announcement was made, it just seemed to me like they just wanted to make sure people knew this one was coming to the west, guaranteed, that way we wouldnt have to beg like we had been doing for it :P

Doesnt matter to me though, I’ve got MORE than enough games to last me even if it wasnt gonna be released same year :P

          • kaotron

It’s be cool of they’d advertise the game and make some people know that it actually exist. Instead of constantly showing the next annual naruto fighting game.

      • Samsara09

people need glasses and reading interpretation classes, although I am really not in a position to teach them by example, considering I thought that what he said confirmed a 2015 jp release date.

    • Samsara09

Your prediction is smart.Let me guess a date.December 15,the date when phantasia(the first tales of) and abyss(the 10th birthday) got released.

Normally, this game would be released in december 15 2015 as the 20th anniversary(2015) game, but because xillia released in 2011,instead of in 2010,I imagine they will release zestiria a year earlier to set the clock straight.

Also,I really doubt this game gave them much trouble, there is no need to hoard it till december 2015,especially since the rpg genre will be dead in the PS3 by then.

I imagine only Atlus will still release some meaningful rpg for the PS3…since I believe they will try to release another persona, gotta make use of the engine, lol.

This will allow them to begin developing a tales for PS4 without losing momentum.Good for us :D

      • Pyrofrost

I’m expecting a November~December window with this game.

Though, if it were to be released in 2015, I expect Feb~March.

        • Samsara09

          Yes,spring.WellThis is gonna be great.A question,if I may.It is out of topic….

Do you think atlus could pull a persona 4 on us again and release persona 6 on the PS3?

          • Pyrofrost

Anything is possible, and I think that is entirely possible.

One thing about Persona is that they have a pattern of releasing two close together so far, first with P1 and the P2 duology and second with P3 and P4.

I expect P6 to release about 2-ish years after P5, and made on the same engine as P5 (even if they do jump forward to PS4)

            • Samsara09

Yup.You confirmed my analyses. Thanks for the help,mister/miss Pryo.

  • Yaro

Well thats nice but if it wont have dual audio im importing..

    • s-

      Same here.

    • MasterSensei

Have some hope! It might have good voice acting like Symphonia! (I think Symphonia and Vesperia are the only ones so far with good english voice acting…)

      • sakanaとkoeda

What about Graces? Pascal? Malik? Sophie?!

        • MasterSensei

Oh, I forgot about GracesF seeing as it’s the worst Tales game so far. I liked Pascal and Malik’s voices but Sophie barely spoke anything to really say whether she was great or not.

    • NegativeZero

I’m fairly sure they said they’d be doing this from now on. They already did it for Symphonia, but didn’t want to do for Xillia 2 because the first game was dub-only.

Tales of Hearts R sounds like it’ll be Japanese dialogue only too.

    • Budgiecat

      Oh be quiet

      • xkumo

        You be quiet.

        • Budgiecat

          no you

      • Yaro

Why? Am I not entitled to my opinion and purchase preference?

Regardless Bamco seems to be “getting” it lately, so its quite possible they will provide dual audio in some form. I would be ok even with paid DLC option.

    • PrinceHeir

Hopefully it will have since Xillia 2 maybe the last dub only release they make.

I wouldn’t be surprise if this was JPN audio only though.

  • MrKappa

This is great news, it might sound ungrateful but I was getting a bit tired of having to wait a year and a half latter AFTER the localization was announced just to see the game close to release.

  • ayb_91

    You don’t say!?

25th would be better. Then we can all have nice Christmas presents.

    • greenreaper

I was thinking they’d do something like that. If we’re lucky maybe it’ll only be half a year or so, who knows?

    • Wolf Star

      You mean like KH2.5?? XD
      Japan – October 2nd,2014
      USA- December 2nd,2014
      Europe- December 5th,2014
That’s good enough for me :)

  • Kenshin Raijin

Keep it up Namco!!! I love it when companies improve and actually try their best. I wish SE was like that. Or Atlus…

  • LordKaiser

    World Wide Release? Oh yessss!

  • greenreaper

I wonder if we’ll ever see a PS4 port of this game. If they ever announce plans for it before the PS3 game’s release date, I might have to consider holding off on that pre-order.

    • kaotron

knowing the tales series they might eventually do an upgraded port/remaster for this like they did with hearts/innocence, vesperia, graces & symphonia…but it’ll probably take a while.

    • Elle

      Tales of Zesteria F

    • Samsara09

Namco won’t pull that. They will probably release a sequel :D

  • Josh Sunarso

    How about that VESPERIA localization?!!????!!

    …..
    …….
    ……..

    Yea thought so (._.)

    • Jesse

It’s WAY too late for the PS3 version, now.

      • Josh Sunarso

        Buh…..Buh….. Abyss…..

        • Jesse

          That was a newly made port, though. ^^;

      • Anime10121

Its never too late (especially for a game like Vesperia that doesnt have a heavy focus on cutting edge graphics), but that’s beside the point, Namco dont wanna do it, so it aint gonna happen…

        • kaotron

from a business point of view it’d be a waste to go back and do a vesperia ps3 localization. And after keeping quite for years bamco finally came out and said that they’d rather focus on the new series instead and would probably never release vesperia again but still apparently made the HD symphonia pack that no one was asking for.

At this point I’m just hoping there’s some kinda future port for vesperia, if the vita can handle uncharted and the like it can handle a slightly downgraded port like the abyss 3ds.

I really wanted to play vesperia but at the same time I seriously hate the 360 and I really didnt want to buy a console for a single exclusive game.

    • Budgiecat

Besides that, I was just gonna say Vesperia 360 version was only like a month apart…

    • Samsara09

The more you insist, the worse it gets to you.Just let it go and go enjoy other tales of.i assure you:We will be getting tales of way better than vesperia.

      • Hentailover

Better than Vesperia? Considering that Vesperia is probably my favorite JRPG ever, that’s a tall order from my perspective…

    • Hentailover

What are you talking about? Vesperia is localized! On 360 ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

    • http://ladymulti.livejournal.com/ LadyMulti

I don’t know why they don’t just port over the PS3 version. They could just simply not dub it and it would be fine for 98% of Tales fans. There isn’t THAT much difference in the story for them to not do this…Patty’s small alterations and side-quest additions (ones that aren’t even voiced at all anyway; even the addition of the twins from the movie and the who boss to get one of Flynn’s swords wasn’t voiced.)

And yeah…I’ve beaten it in Japanese, but I”d sure as heck buy it again for the PS3 in English.

  • PhoenixAutomatic~♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪~

A great incentive! This is very nice. :)

  • Samsara09

Great. So,this means zestiria is really releasing next year in japan,eh.I see.
This is good to know, but was rather obvious, since they revealed the game and it’s localization at once.
Well, hopefully it’s three months,at most 5.Having to wait more than that sucks.

    • Pyrofrost

      >>>So,this means zestiria is really releasing next year in japan,eh.

      Not necessarily.

This could mean within 12 months of the JP release or within the same calender year. I’m keeping my prediction with the former unless we get a confirmation that says otherwise.

      • Samsara09

“We’ve gone from over two years with Xillia 1, and now we’ve gotten it down to a year, and we’re going to get it to less than that for Tales of Zestiria”

        • Pyrofrost

          Exactly my point.

It’s not necessarily saying the JP release is in 2015; it’s saying they plan to release it West within 12 months of the JP release.

          • Samsara09

Well,I doubt he would have gone through the “hassle” of saying it,especially in an age where everything is recorded in the internet, just to troll us like that.

If he truly meant within 12 months,he wouldn’t have bothered talking about it to begin with, instead simply letting us in the dark, speculating. There is hardly a need to “fool” us like this.

Ah!I see your point. He left it ambiguous.if so,the game could release in 2014 in japan, and we get it in 2015…or the scenario I interpenetrated.

            • Pyrofrost

It’s more speculation to call this a confirmation of a 2015 release, than to simply read it as, “we’re going to release it West within 12 months of the JP release.”

This article isn’t confirming a JP release date, so no one is really wrong at the moment speculating 2014 or 2015. I’m just stating that it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re releasing them within the same calender year, that’s all.

              Let’s not forget, 12 months = 1 year

              • Samsara09

Yes,this guy was quite a smart one, with that silvery tongue of his.It is quite ambiguous.

Well,we will get in 2015 regardless, but zestiria looks quite complete to me.If japan doesn’t get it this by December, they will be getting it in spring.

  • PrinceHeir

    Take notes other developers!

    • PhoenixAutomatic~♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪~

      Tell that to Square.

      • new_tradition

Actually, SE game localizations THAT ARE CONFIRMED FOR ENGLISH RELEASE (’cause I know everyone’s gonna rag on them for Type-0 and such; I know I do -_-) have been pretty good.

Last several games games they released in Japan that came out in English were all within the 12 month range, some even less then 6 months.

      • Samsara09

Square localizes their games in 3 months or less.KH 1.5 was an exception.

        • PhoenixAutomatic~♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪~

Well, It’s just me then, I feel like that for some odd reason.

          • Samsara09

I get you.Square announces too soon,so the wait feels bigger.

            • PhoenixAutomatic~♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪~

              Yes. That’s right.

        • http://ladymulti.livejournal.com/ LadyMulti

Drakengard 3 was like 2 years ago for Japan.

      • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

Square hit a rough patch for a while. They’ll bounce back hopefully. They just need to stop telling us about game WAY before they’re actually ready/compable to make them.

          Agreed.

A shame, because I prefer two years of waiting by the location, you know, is tradition and should not change.

    • KingNigma

Agreed. What was Namco thinking with this decision?

At long last! A lot of western games have been released simultaneously here and in Japan. Seeing this news makes me happy. I’d throw a chair out of happiness of Compile Heart do this with Neptunia VII.

  • Samsara09

We finally caught up to the japanese releases.A dream come true.Had someone told me this would happen back in 2007-2011,I would have slapped him, lol.

  • articuzwolf

same year? darn…I thought it was simultaneous release
but still, HUGE improvement compared to the Xillia and Xillia 2

    • Wolf Star

      I know right?? :D

    • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

Same. I wanted this one more than Hearts since it’ll likely be dubbed. But I’ll get all 3 as long as I have the money when it comes out. If not, I’ll get Hearts later.

  • penemue

Thank you Namco Bandai THANK YOU

  • Bobby Jennings

This pretty much confirms a 2015 release date for Japan. Which is lame.

    • LunarHaven

Why is that lame if we also get it in 2015? We already get Xillia 2 AND Hearts R this year. If Zestiria came this year they would probably go out of business.

      • Hentailover

I’d honestly get a Japanese version this year… This way I get to do what I did with both Xillia games… Play a bit of the japanese version only to drop it in favor of localized when it comes out ^^
Bottom line is, I just want to try the game sooner.

        • Bobby Jennings

          This. Thank you.

        • LunarHaven

Understandable dude, but even if the west didn’t get the game at the same time, I think the game would still be 2015 in Japan.

          • Hentailover

Oh, I know. Just wishful thinking here ^^

      • Bobby Jennings

I’m talking about in Japan. I wanna import.

        • LunarHaven

If they include the Japanese voice option like in Symphonia, I don’t see a point really. But hey, if you would buy two copies of a Tales game props dude, the more support it gets the better!

          • Bobby Jennings

Just to play it early. I love the Tales series tooooo much.

And yes, I always buy both the Japanese and english versions of the games, with the exception of Symphonia.

      • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

I agree with you. Two Tales in one year and the next confirmed (kinda) for next year. That’s good times.

    • Pyrofrost

I’m gonna let you know something because we’re mates.

This article does not confirm a 2015 JP release date. It just says it will hit West the same year. We don’t know if that is simply meaning within a year of the JP release, or within the same calender year.

      • Bobby Jennings

Yeah I was actually thinking of that after that posting.

So yeah it could be possible that we get it this year? I just wanna play it so bad. :/

        • Pyrofrost

Agreed bro, I’m really hoping this will be my main holiday season JRPG :3

Hoping for December. Maybe we’ll get a release date at TGS.

I was honestly expecting one during TalesFES but it’s okay though. I forgive Baba-san. :P

Good. But I thought since it was international it’d be a worldwide release.

“We’ve gone from over two years with Xillia 1, and now we’ve gotten it down to a year, and we’re going to get it to less than that for Tales of Zestiria—it’s going to be in the same year as the Japanese release. So they’re working on shrinking that time down as much as possible.”

It means within 12 months possibly.Considering they are gonna shrink the time,I say 3 months,5 months.Zestiria is probably releasing this year in japan, same as persona 5.

Listen guys, this is rad! I’m 100% onboard with this series’ new games (so, not Symphonia or Graces. Sorry) after how excellent Xillia was. Got Xillia 2 pre-ordered. And I just picked up Ni No Kuni on the Flash Sale and wish I picked it up sooner. I’m gonna support this too! You bet! Thanks for working to get us these games quicker!

That’s awesome news. I’m always super excited about Tales games. Just the sheer fact that it was announced to already be coming over was great but the fact that I don’t have to pine over it when I see the Japanese version available at anime con booths it awesome. I know I was antsy last year with Tales of Xillia 2. The shorter time to wait to enjoy an entry of my favorite game series the better~

Yeah, only ungrateful people import games >.>

You mistake having a standard and not settling for mediocre experience (in my opinion) for ungratefulness.

Im not ok with only having english dub in my japanese games. You might be, thats ok,
