Send that ram high into the sky.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Konami shared new gameplay footage of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain during the latest episode of its weekly Kojima Station webcast.

The footage shown during the broadcast appears to come from a behind closed doors presentation of the game at E3 this week.

You’ll see Snake tranquilize a few enemy soldiers, and use a Fulton surface-to-air recovery system to send them high into the sky. Then you’ll see him to the same thing to a ram.

Watch the footage below. If you missed it, catch the E3 trailer and a new set of screenshots here.

    I want David Hayter back.

    • Amir

I don’t. I want Hayter voicing Snake and Sutherland voicing Big Boss. Also he’s doing a great job with the voice, Hayter’s voice was way too comical, Sutherland’s voice is real.

Just remember MGS3 (my favorite game of all time), everyone were serious, Hayter was comical; Although he was really good in MGS4.

      • Nate

Why did they keep the JP voice actor?

        • 罪罰

Voice acting in Japan is another level.

          • Nate

Was that JP guy, that much better than Hayter that he diserved to stay? Could they have got someone better too?

            • Amir

As someone who has played the entire MGS1 in Japanese and seen the entire Ghost in the Shell series, I can say that: Yes, he’s much better.

Also, why the f are you comparing the Japanese voice and the English one? Compare Hayter and Sutherland, then we’ll talk.

              • Nate

                Well that wasn’t very nice.

                • Budgiecat

He’s probably annoyed that you’re whining about something that is unavoidable and set in stone at this point…

                  • Amir

First of all I was annoyed at that “JP Guy”, secondly the guy hasn’t even heard Sutherland in his role and he’s judging him. Go hear them both and then judge Kojima’s decision.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Hayter; But I love him as a screenwriter. Watchmen was amazing thanks to his writing.

I was skeptical at first myself, but now that I’ve heard Sutherland I can say that he’s a great choice for Snake’s voice. MGS5 is much darker and realisitc than the previous games and Hayter’s voice doesn’t fit in it.

90% of those who are complaining haven’t even heard the new voice. (they’re probably also not older than 12)

                    • DrForbidden

“90% of those who are complaining haven’t even heard the new voice. (they’re probably also not older than 12).”

You can have your own opinion about the change as anyone can, but throwing insulting platitudes and ignorant generalisations around do not further your cause. In fact, it might make you look douchey.

                    • Budgiecat

Well, still, it’s Big Boss….not Snake (Solid).

So it shoulda always been 2 different voice actors for 2 different characters.

Just like it was in MGS4

              • Bobby Jennings

                That was mean….

              • PrinceHeir

                Agree.

It’s a shame these noobies don’t know who Otsuka is. If your an avid fan of anime, chances are you’ll hear him in one of the shows you watching.

People think Hayter is some sort of godlike voice actor even though he only did one role and he’s not even good at it.

Not to mention Otsuka and Kojima actually converses with each other and talks on how Otsuka would act Snake in certain scenes.

Just watch all the behind the scene footage of MGS games and you’ll see Kojima talking about Otsuka one way or another.

Dub’s don’t even get monitored by the original creator themselves.

                • Budgiecat

Well obviously this time around they are (dat mo-cap)

                  • PrinceHeir

That’s why the voice acting will be amazing in English and Japanese since Kojima will now monitor both voices unlike back then.

Plus there were a lot of mistranslations the idiot translator that did MGS1/MGS2.

Like Big Boss having a coma(even though in the JPN version he was only sterile)

            • PrinceHeir

              Lol JP guy.

Seriously you have no clue who Akio Otsuka is so please stop before you embarrass yourself even further.

As someone already said. He did Ghost in the Shell and other iconic roles. He’s considered a legend in Japan and is known a lot of roles in the anime industry.

They even had a poll in Japan this year on who has the coolest male voice and Otsuka-san came on top.

              http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2014/02/09-1/poll-10-best-voice-actors-for-cool-and-mature-male-characters

Not to mention they did based Snake off of him. All his smoking style and behavior are all based of Otsuka(play MGS4 and watch the behind the scene footage)

Lol someone better, even though Snake was design based off Otsuka.

Kojima himself said in the 25th Anniversary event that Snake is 70% made of Otsuka.

              https://twitter.com/HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN/status/166442118649356288

Does Kojima even know Hayter? He even personally thanks Otsuka for during one of episodes.

              http://youtu.be/Olojr7MHLjY?t=1h2m56s

Kojima Personally thanks him for 15 years of voicing Snake. They even gave him the Ground Zeroes merchandise, Phantom Pain Jacket, Watch and all.

Don’t even mention Hayter in the same sentence as Otsuka-san. Remove Snake’s role to Hayter’s resume and who’s he again in the voice industry?? LOL. He’s been voice acting well before Dubs even existed.

Otsuka’s legacy has already been cemented as one of the legends in Japan. He could retire right now if he wants to. Hayter doesn’t even come close to the amount of work and influence Otsuka has done over the years.

It’s a shame people are too blinded to Hayter(probably due to nostalgia)

He was good in MGS1-MGS2, then MGS3 came and he was okay.

then MGS4 and Peace Walker came. Wow got to be one of the worst performance i have ever seen. Seriously who talks like that in real life?

        • Budgiecat

Because they’re not making a Japanese live action movie.

the West is the real focus.

        • sub_o

Several reasons. First Akio Otsuka is a very versatile voice actor, he played all the Snakes, beside Big Boss in MGS 4.

Second his father Chikao Otsuka, who’s also a voice actor, played Big Boss in MGS4. Prior to that the father and son had a broken relationship, which was mended by Kojima by casting them both in MGS4. They and Kojima are probably very close due to this.

      • DarthBrian

Metal Gear isn’t supposed to be super serious. I’m not sure what your point is.

        • Zackasaur

This Metal Gear is pretty damn serious, to be fair.

          • DarthBrian

            You can air rescue sheep.

            • Zackasaur

              Indeed.

Metal Gear Solid IS serious, though. It juxtaposes that with stupid stuff to make a pretty unique (and Japanese) feeling series.

            • DrForbidden

              ‘Kidnap’, actually. :)

    • CeroSuerte

I share your sentiment, i liked his voice, also with sutherland my mind becomes 24 24 24.. Unfortunately this is my humble opinion only.. I talked to many who said they never liked hayter & more than ok with sutherland.. At least i would thought they pick less high profile voice so its easier to digest, but again like me now someone somewhere will complain.. Thats y ill play it on mute or Japanese if they were to put both languages

      • Nate

I just don’t get why did they fire the US VA and keep the JP VA. You know the JP dont think too high of us. And they think they are all that and a bag of chips. If they wanted a new direction for the character then why keep the JP actor?

        • Bobby Jennings

          You have a point.

          • Nate

            Thank you so much.

        • DarthBrian

Exactly. Kojima said that this is an older Snake so he wanted to hire someone with an older more gravelly voice or something like that. David Hayter is 45 and Kiefer Sutherland is 47. Yeah, he’s so much older than David Hayter. smh

Meanwhile Akio Ōtsuka, who does the Japanese voice, is 54. WAY older than either of the English VAs.

The only reason Kojima changed is because he has a star VA in Japan playing Snake and not a star playing Snake in English-speaking countries and he’s gotten so full of himself he wants a Hollywood actor playing Snake.

          i.e. he’s a selfish git.

          • Nate

That is the very very best I’ve seen that put. I’m going to have to use that. You are so right.

          • Nate

I wish others saw this and boycotted this game until he fixed this issue.

          • Shady Shariest

When it comes to voice acting, age does not mean shit.

        • Ping92

the sad thing is that David Hayter was unaware that he will not be involved in the game.
He had to contact Konami and wasn’t offered an explanation as to why he won’t be voicing a character that he has been as for so many years

        • Budgiecat

          It’s the opposite

Kojima (albeit a proud Japanese), obviously is focused more on catering to the West. He is a raging Hollywood Otaku and Ameriboo…

Remember, there’s a Hollywood movie in the works.

      • DarthBrian

People who don’t like David Hayter are just making excuses for the bad decision to recast the character. Their opinion means nothing to me. David Hayter is Snake. Period.

        • Bobby Jennings

          I agree.

Though is a different VA a game changer for me? Nah not really, but Sutherland is going to take time to get used to.

          • DarthBrian

I’m just not going to play the game. Fuck it. There’s plenty of other games to play.

        • LordKaiser

He was never fit to be snake, the reason you like him is because you was used to him.

    • Budgiecat

Hayter should have never been Big Boss to begin with…

      • Zackasaur

I agree. This is only a problem now because Kojima decided to fix a problem he caused.

    • César H. Sandoval

No matter how good Bauer ends up in the role, this game will forever be tainted because of the lack of Hayter at least for me.

  • CeroSuerte

The video starts by the guy saying “dont take any pictures dont take any videos”

    • Zackasaur

      They usually do. xD

  • Zechs

This looks so fun! Poor ram lol.

    • Budgiecat

Where are the animal rights social justice warriors?

      • DrForbidden

Please don’t lump nutjobs like PETA in with the rest of animal activists…

        • Budgiecat

          okaaay…

  • Six

Has there been any kind of release window given for the game yet?

    • Anime10121

      1984…

But seriously, they need to give a release date (or at least year), I dont want this game becoming the Last Guardian/FFXV from Konami :/

      • Solomon_Kano

It’s on MGS4 status, but I don’t think we’ll ever see it hit those levels of vapor.

        • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

Yeah, nowhere near FFXV / TLG status. Kojima has been doing a good job of consistently showing it since it was announced as TPP at the VGAs.

          • Solomon_Kano

Yea, it’s a lot easier to accept the wait when we at least see the game on a regular basis. That Ground Zeroes is only a few months old doesn’t hurt either. For all intents and purposes, that was our demo, now we wait for the real deal.

      • Six

I hope it’s early 2016. Next year is insane enough as it is.

        • Anime10121

Yep, honestly, thats my guess as well, early 2016 or fall 2015. I mean, at the very least, we know the game is actually playable unlike the other two :P

  • Impressionnant

Apparently you can fulton ANYTHING. I highly doubt this, but it would be pretty cool.

    • Anime10121

I’ve heard you can fulton crates and stuff as well! So I can see the Diamond Dogs base becoming rather crowded, VERY fast XD

  • Northstar

That’s why love Metal Gear XD Good! Fulton is back

  • $23992919

I’m gonna Fulton a boss, or a Metal Gear
