Junichi Yoshizawa details dream of creating PS Vita-specific game.

Freedom Wars

Sony Computer Entertainment America and Europe have released a new English story trailer for Freedom Wars, as well as new details from SCE Japan Studio producer Junichi Yoshizawa.

Find the message from Yoshizawa below, with the trailer following.

Last week, we were finally able to release Freedom Wars in Japan. To celebrate the successful launch, I wanted to take a moment to write a message to our eager fans in North America.

Freedom Wars is a title I created to realize a dream of mine. My vision was to develop a PS Vita game that took advantage of the handheld system’s unique features, enabling gamers to come together via ad-hoc and Wi-Fi to overcome terrifying enemies. PlayStation has a storied legacy of creating innovative experiences and our collective goal was to create a Vita game that brought gamers together in a socially connected, location-based, co-op experience.

In order to do that, I gathered a number of well-known developers with an impressive pedigree for creating some of Japan’s most beloved titles – developers Shift and Dimps. These two developers both produce high-quality, interesting titles, but in this case I wanted to utilize both of their strengths, so I asked Shift to be in charge of game design, character design and story, while Dimps handled programming, graphics and direction.

The collaboration between these two developers has been wonderful and the “Freedom Wars” that they have helped create has three distinct strengths:

The first is the outrageous world and story, where prisoners are bound by 1 million years of penal servitude for the sin of “living” and need to fight for their freedom.

The second is a new game where the goal isn’t to just defeat your enemy, but to save people from your defeated enemies and create a multiplayer experience where you can clearly divide up responsibilities among your teammates.

The third is a ranked competition where players can contribute to the areas they actually live in and battle on behalf of their own “city state.”

With the coordination of each of these pillars, we created Freedom Wars – a testament to our collective vision of delivering a frenetic, co-op action game that we believe will please the Western community when it launches later this year.

Take care!
Junichi Yoshizawa

If they’re still using Japanese with subs for trailers, makes me wonder if they’re still aiming for a Summer release for the West.

    • Dede Ogbe

There isn’t going to be any dubs. The western release is only going to have english subs with the japanese dub. So yeah it’s still likely the release date has not changed.

      • Rafael Martines

Love it :) Japanese voices with English Sub o/

      • Tetris

Huh, I haven’t heard anything about it either way lol. It’s first party so I just assumed it’d be dubbed, but I wouldn’t mind if it’s just subs. I just want it in English!

        • Dede Ogbe

I think it’s mainly to due with the vocaliod system. Sony would literally have to rebuild everything for a western release. If they did that I would expect it to release towards the end of 2015. Glad they decided not to

      • nekolife

This is how I prefer games, so that makes me happy. Do you have a source?

        • Dede Ogbe

The main producer for the English localisation has already stated this on twitter. You can also check the ps America blog where he confirms it in the comment section

  • Martian Wong

So Japan Studio is in charge of the battle system?

    • 武神水樹

Battle system is Shift, same studio that did God Eater 2

  • Land of Green Pasture

and here I thought ‘Abductors’ are generally enemies… so every regional Panopticon have their own Abductor units then?

    • 武神水樹

In the original trailer there’s abductors fighting by your team

  • Budgiecat

    When’s the release date?

tetsuya couldn’t wait and he got the JPN copy

    • 罪罰

      and..? he knows jap.

      • Budgiecat

lol no he doesn’t. And don’t use that; use JPN or Japanese….*P.C. social justice warrior face*

  • 武神水樹

    His dream game sounds awesome

  • SatsukiYumizuka

No dub, what a bunch of bs. Western Sony too cheap to even dub vita games it seems

    • 罪罰

they weren’t even going to bring it here, yet after the fucking piece of plastic sells like shit and barely anyone gives a crap anymore only silly low budget jrpgs they brought this over, but no, you gotta give them shit for not dubbing it. AND if they dubbed it, everybody would bitch about having no Japanese audio.

you play the game, this ain’t a audio drama.

      • Dede Ogbe

And we get it a lot faster than if it were a full dub. Which definitely won’t be out by the end of this year. At the end of the day the Vita is getting games. Don’t really care bout the audio.

        • 罪罰

          THANK YOU.

    • Neffy L

Do you care more about dubs than games? It seems that way.

  • new_tradition

Wait, can someone fluent in Japanese clarify something? They girl at the start is clearly saying “memory”, but why does the subs talk about waking from a dream?

I saw the same thing with the Asian subbed trailer, thinking it was some sort of error, but that even the official English trailer has that, I’m kind of confused…

Anyways, the game still looks cool from what I saw the first time, lol. Shame about the lacking dub, but at least the 29.99 MSRP seems to reflect that omission, so that’s something >3>

    • 武神水樹

If you played the demo your character almost gets killed by an Abductor, you meet Aries in a void where you create your character and she tells you about how you’ll eventually meet and help Beatrice. After you’re done Aries says looks like it’s time for you to wake up and she’ll see you later

      • new_tradition

Thanks for the context, but I’m still not understanding why the actual word she uses is the English word “memory”.

Google tells me “dream” translated into Japanese is something like “yume”, so why say “memory”?

        • 武神水樹

Aries said 眠り/nemuri which is sleep, time to wake up

          • new_tradition

Lol, me and my shitty ears. Thank you for the response xD

            • 武神水樹

  • Unretributed

No dubs? That is complete bullshit.

    • 武神水樹

      Don’t buy it, simple

      • Unretributed

        Or buy a used copy.

        • TheBlackRabbit

Yea this’ll work…but finding used vita games is rare outside of the fighters… my personal experience.

          • Unretributed

Third party sellers through Amazon have just about any game you can imagine used, in my personal experience.

            • TheBlackRabbit

oh i meant locally sorry for the mistake.

              • Unretributed

Oh well my local stores never have anything used in high quantities either. Not even some popular mainstream titles.

Except for maybe games from Gen 6 and backwards.

    • Belenger

Heh, thats a way to completely skip redoing the vocaloid engine for the accesories (your slave), will surely double dip when it comes to America.

    • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

Although I think not dubbing such an awesome game is disappointing, I would imagine the NPC speech system thing makes dubbing much more difficult? And the fact that this game retails for basically 30.

      • Belenger

Yamaha probably went “nope”, we are not making a full vocaloid english database for the western ver, nope nope nope.

        • vileBrenman

Actually the voice customization for the Android supports english. There was a trailer showing this off.

    • nekolife

Hehe, now you know how we feel on the other side of the fence wanting the original Japanese.

Dual audio makes everybody happy, but one nice benefit of the JP-only approach is that it reduces the time to market. So you don’t have to wait a year or more to play.

    • Elvick

      The game is only $30.

  • TheBlackRabbit

eh no dubs bums me out, but i might still buy. hmmm

  • osa

Looks interesting. I’m not really into hunting games but it sounds like there will be a story to follow so I’m in.
    Music sounds great too.

    • 武神水樹

Yep and the official soundtrack is 3 cds

    • Dede Ogbe

I’ve got the game and I definitely wouldn’t call it a typical hunting game. More like it has elements of hunting in it. Think EX Troopers, it’s similar to that

      • ShinGundam

What i thought, it looks pretty close to EX Troopers.

      • Somerandomperson

        “Recapture, Multi-player and Action”
        That is Freedom Wars.

  • nekolife

I bought a new PSV for this game (and Ao no Kiseki..), love the art style so much.

I was going to wait for the US release in case there were issues with cross-region online play, but I’m getting impatient already. Tempted to import. :|

    • Dede Ogbe

Dude I bought this along with Sen no kiseki :-)

  • chibuki

No dubs, no problem here. I wish the other games I like are getting this treatment in favor of faster localization.

    • JoJo_718

I hope Oreshika follows this trend.

      • Dede Ogbe

I don’t think Oreshika would even work with dubs. It’s not like SS which can be dubbed, or Freedom wars which might be possible to get away with.

  • 武神水樹

They’re adding subs for multiple languages

  • pixxxelz

Great news! I can’t wait for this game PvP here I come

  • bloodiOS

No English dub? No wonder the retail copy is so cheap. I like that! I sure hope that they will approach Oreshika the same way.

    • nekolife

I’d like to see more games approached this way. Digital releases with original audio could be quick and dirt cheap to release, giving them a worldwide audience. Everybody wins.

    • DukeVerde

I kinda wanted Oreshika to have English voices…

  • tubers

    No dub. $ 30 only? Pre-ordered.

  • MrFinalgamer

Great stuff! Now that Freedom Wars is coming along nicely…could you start working on Patapon 4 Yoshizawa???

  • Comandante Bushido

  • ThatGuy3190_7

No English dub, Japanese sub only. I don’t really care just as long as the story and gameplay are fantastic. After all, I play video games to have fun, not for who or what is more superior than the other. While the fanboys complain or dance in victory over their fancakes, I don’t read anything about it being Japanese sub only. Only going by the video, well, there are numerous trailers released for the English audience where it is only translated with subs while retaining the original Japanese voice acting, only for it to have English voice acting towards the release of the product. Speaking of, there isn’t even a set release date or time frame of this game other than later this year. Stop jumping the gun and complaining and feeling like elitists, fanboys.

    • Dede Ogbe

As we said before. It’s already been confirmed. Go check the English producers twitter page, or the ps blog us. He confirms it in the comment section. It’s only going to have english subs. No Dub. It’s unfortunate but I don’t think it’s a real issue.
