Rumor: Halo: The Master Chief Collection coming to Xbox One this year, includes Halo 1-4

Xbox One's 2014 Halo journey.

Halo 4

Microsoft will release Halo: The Master Chief Collection—a colection including high-definition remakes of Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 4—for Xbox One later this year, Engadget reports.

The collection will act as a refresher ahead of next fall’s Halo 5: Guardians release, according to the website’s sources.

When Microsoft officially announced Halo 5 and it’s fall 2015 release this morning, it said something Halo would still arrive in 2014.

Engadget’s report is in line with rumors from earlier this year, which claimed a Halo 2 remake was on the way, which also included ports of Halo 3 and Halo 4, as well as beta access to Halo 5.

The team behind the project is unknown, but considering Saber Interactive, who developed Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary for Xbox 360, is working on an unannounced Xbox One project, the team is a likely candidate.

I’ll be getting an Xbox One for Sunset and Quantum Break (and that rumored Platinum Games project), and the only Halo I’ve played is Halo 3 multiplayer, so this is pretty good for me. Will allow me to try out Halo 5, too.

    • Karysonson

Same here! I’m interested in the Halo series and if they put it all in a special bundle then I’m game!

    • Elvick

That’s a shame, because imo Reach is the best. And that’s not included. Hopefully they port that too in the future.

    • SuperLuigi

2 is my favorite fps of all time even to this day. 1 had a slightly better campaign but 2s was great fun too. Also 2 has a god tier multiplayer. It even had more modes than games today have…even without custom games. I like every halo I have played besides wars.

    • Anime10121

If this rumor is true, GOD you’re gonna love Halo Combat Evolved! Still the most entertaining FPS I’ve ever played to this day! While the sequels did improve on the formula, there’s just something about Halo 1’s maps that were just beyond perfect!

    • Zero

I’ve played the original trilogy, but I missed out on ODST, Reach, and Halo 4. I’d like to play them. If they come to XB1 in some way, I would be pretty interested. I’m more interested in the Bungie Halo games though. I’m also excited for Sunset Overdrives and QB.

This is just a rumor I hear, from some of the internet’s deepest alleyways. Please don’t share it with anyone is our little secret, alright?

The rumor says:ALL RUMORS ARE BOGUS TILL E3.The fact the rumor could get “confirmed’ in the event is a lucky based occurrence, and a totally independent event.

    • Mexreturns

Yeah, it’s a rumor but engadget is a pretty well known site.

      • Samsara09

I see.Well, this is microsoft,so I could care less. But I am a nice guy.I worry for my fellow posters getting tricked by this rumor.Watch yourselfs.

    • Six

I doubt a site like Engadget would report on this unless they were pretty damn certain.

      • Solomon_Kano

This. They hardly bring up video games in the first place, they aren’t just going to throw this out unless they’ve got it on pretty good authority.

        • Samsara09

          guess a professional showed up!
Since you say so.Still, only said that just as a warming to the good fans here.I could care less if this rumor is real or no.

          • Solomon_Kano

Fair enough. But I’m sure folks know not to take rumors as facts by now.

    • Karysonson

      That’s subjective

  • Mexreturns

    Good for Xbone fans :)

  • Solomon_Kano

I really hope they’ve got plans to remaster Reach later, if this pans out. I really don’t see refreshing people’s memory of MC as any reason to leave it out, but hey.

    • Six

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Reach command a full-blown remake on it’s own in a few years, since 2016 will probably be all about Gears of War.

      • Solomon_Kano

I really hope not. Where would ODST fit in, then? Would they just leave that behind? I mean, there wouldn’t be much logic to bundling it with Reach and it definitely wouldn’t get a standalone revisit.

The bigger question here, to me anyhow, is what’s the MP for this collection gonna be like?

I don’t imagine they’ll drop it, so do we get all of the old maps on Halo 4’s engine this time like they remade Halo 1’s in Reach’s? That would be pretty damn significant to get basically all of the Halo games’ MP combined into one while folks wait for 5, I think. Most likely we’d just get Halo 4 MP expanded to X1, but damn, that’d be slick to see.

        • Six

Probably. ODST is definitely the odd man out here. If Bungie had made it a bigger game and dropped the “3” from the title, that probably wouldn’t be the case.

Multiplayer is up in the air for sure. I know a lot of people hated Halo 4’s MP, and I imagine that 343 is well aware of that.

          • Solomon_Kano

Maybe they’ll just fold it into Halo 3 and keep it quiet. Nobody will notice lol.

In perhaps a more radical thought, what if they just use all of the old maps (or at least a selection of em) to beta Halo 5’s MP? Run em all through 5’s engine and get feedback without actually giving away any of 5’s maps.

            • Six

That would be a pretty good idea. They could play up the nostalgia factor and try to win back over some of those they lost from Halo 4. It would be able to erase any doubts about Halo 5.

              • Solomon_Kano

I certainly hope they’re thinking along those lines.

    • 罪罰

They wont touch Reach, that’s Bungies good bye to Xbox. They should leave it be what it is.

  • Somerandomperson

I only liked the Halo cutscenes.

  • shogunknight

They werent joking when they said journey to Halo 5

  • Claude

That sounds like a good deal. If ODST and Reach were in there it would pretty much be the ultimate collection (depending on if you liked Wars or not).

  • rurifan

60fps would be nice but Halo seems a little too worn out to get excited over such old games being ported. 4 whole games in a bundle also seems unrealistic as far as this rumor goes. It would dillute the multiplayer base too much, and easily make people sick of Halo before Halo5 even comes out.

    • Six

Halo isn’t “worn out”. The amount of people getting excited for both this and Halo 5 shows that.

Also, how can the multiplayer get diluted?

      • DeadnBuried

He means that, when the next game comes out, the playerbase typically moves on to the new game and leaves the old one behind. If they release 4 new Hsko games at the same time, all with multiplayer of their own, then of the, let’s say 2 million people that buy it, there’s the chance that only 25% of those will be playing each game’s multiplayer. That will do huge damage to the playerbase.

The best option would be to have one multiplayer game for the bundle, spanning all four games, perhaps including the best maps from each? That way it would always be easy to find a match and it would work much better than having four separate multiplayer games in one go.

        • Zackasaur

There may be no mp at all, besides a Halo 5 beta key. Or they could do a map mix with Halo 4 engine mp.

But four separate ones would indeed be nonsensical.

          • DeadnBuried

I can’t imagine a release without any multiplayer, nobody would buy it. And a Halo 5 beta would still be a good 8 months away so I can’t see that being a substitute. They’d most likely include Halo 4’s updated multiplayer with bonus maps from the other games. That would make for quite a killer release, few would say no to that.

  • McPoo

I’d consider this. I always thought the lore and stories in the games seemed cool, I never got into the games themselves though.

    • Zackasaur

Most of the good lore comes from the novels of outside authors, to be honest.

But the games are pretty decent. Reach is the best one.

  • Elvick

    That’d be cool.

Though Reach is the best imo, so it not being there is lame. Though understandable, since it has nothing really to do with 5. Still.

I hope other companies do this too… *cough*Uncharted1-3*cough*

Edit; Shame ODST isn’t there though. It does take place within the first trilogy.

    • rurifan

I hope Sony’s legacy game streaming service flops hard and fast so publishers won’t think they can just let old PS3 garbage be a cash cow instead of doing nice 60fps PS4 ports. :|

      • Zackasaur

Meanwhile, others hope PS Now means less ports.

Me? I’m happy with a successful mix of both.

You can bet on PS Now being a success.

        • rurifan

Having occasonally suffered games with game-mode off on my TV, which results in ~60ms of additional input lag, I have confidence that game streaming will suck and flop. Only question to me is how long Sony and publishers pretend it’s not a failure (again).

        • Elvick

Mix of both is the way to go.

  • tokyobassist

I wonder if this is even going to bother with multiplayer. I can see them re-releasing them all at 60fps with very very slight graphical updates to select titles (namely 1 HD, 3 and 4 but the games look great anyway).

Pretty neat but I hate the thought of them doing to this to even more recently released series. I kind of respect Arkham Knight for having the balls to just make a straight up next gen game because nobody else is doing it.

Gamers seem to forget such a simple concept. You can sell a system with one game but you gotta have those games that really grab people by the balls. People won’t care about the system if the content is legitimately calling out to them to buy one. I know tons of people that are saving up for a new system just because of stuff like Project Beast, Arkham Knight and Sunset Overdrive.

Heck remember buying a Dreamcast just because I saw amazing looking games like Power Stone & Soul Calibur or the Gamecube because of Smash Bros Melee, Rogue Squadron 2 and SSX Tricky. It’s just odd to me that’s a foreign concept these days to have games that are amazing at launch.

  • Noiblade

I really hope this is real. I’ve been wanting to get into Halo for the longest time.
This will be THE deal breaker for me, i’m still debating between the One and the PS4, (They have all the same games i’m looking forward to, and now there’s no difference between them) Microsoft, you actually make this happen and i’ll buy the Xbox One.

  • AdamBoy64

Man, if this turns out to be true – then it’s amazing news for Halo fans.
Wow, Microsoft are really working hard at the moment – some great stuff in store for X1 owners.

    It’s great to see.
