Yokai Watch

Yokai Watch was the top seller in Japan this past week. The July-launched 3DS game bested new release Mario Golf: World Tour by 13,000 units with 63,000 copies sold.

Mario Golf: World Tour, meanwhile, opened at second most sold with 50,000 sales.

Also new, Touch Detective 3 for 3DS and Child of Light for PlayStation 4 opened at low numbers with 8,200 and 7,800 moved, respectively.

Do not start posting the 3DS vs Vita comments. This one is better! etc.

I’m really burned out on checking the comments here after a few hours and reading tons of those. Having to remove and edit them… etc.

Let’s just give it a rest. Enough is enough. Thank You.

Eh? I haven’t seen any comments like that at all this time… Or is this more of a friendly reminder instead?

      • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

Pretty much. I’d like to put a stop to them before they possibly start getting posted.

Oh, okay. I thought Disqus was screwing with me again. I’ve had the page up since the article first went live and haven’t refreshed it yet, so I was wondering how you deleted the comments without me seeing them @w@

    • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Well, if you’re going to get that serious, you should probably feature this comment (and do something like that for the next couple of weeks)

      • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Honestly, he’d have to do that every week since the issue seems to crop up from time to time.

  • Audie Bakerson

Most of this is pretty expected, but Child of Light being so high is interesting. A foreign made game (that isn’t being published by a native company) without huge ad dollars behind it in the top 10 is pretty high.

When I saw someone on a 日本語 board that shall not be named mention (something to the effect of) “even though it’s an overseas game, it has a very Japanese feel”, I thought it was amusing, but isolated (same board has a recurring Steam threads). Now I really am curious to see more on what the country thinks of it.

edit: I go back to find the original comment and can’t find it. Instead I HAVE found an entire thread on it, with mostly similiar comments (there’s more, but I’m not that confident in my ability to translate them).

“How should I put it… The creator seems to have been very influenced by Japanese RPGS.”
“the character design looks like it was intended for Japanese (people)”

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

You’re talking about 2ch, aren’t you? Why go through the trouble of keeping them anonymous? Anybody that visits it should have a pretty good idea of how they feel about foreigners and foreign games, lol.

      • Audie Bakerson

Actually no. 2ch is a text board.

        • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

I doubt it was. 2ch usually doesn’t have very good opinions for foreigners, much less their developed games :p

    • http://Xcite79.1up.com/ Keegs79

You can say its high but its still weak sales. You could say its that high just for that reason. It should be high with all things considered.

      • Anime10121

Exactly, the top ten sales in general suck this week :/

  • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

The PS4 FELL during Golden Week D= Sony needs to learn how to launch platforms in Japan, this is embarrassing to see this happen again.

    • RampagingSoul

It’s the only hardware that fell as well. It’s to be expected though, at least in my opinion.

      • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Expected, sure but again, it’s not a good show of confidence if you can’t launch in your native country and ramp up proper support in time for your launch.

        • RampagingSoul

I think that goes for any console/handheld nowadays. Wii U had great launch numbers, but failed to entice people of all regions because they didn’t have software that appealed to the market. Same goes for 3DS, Vita, and PS3 as well when they came out if I remember correctly.

          • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

And you’d think they’d learn not just from each other but from past iterations! Sony’s basically been like this 3 times in a row, now that you mentioned PS3. PS3/PS Vita/ PS4. Heck, wasn’t PSP a bit slow in the beginning too?

            • RampagingSoul

I believe so. I don’t know, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it did.

    • kurosan9712

Well, why wouldn’t it fall? It has literally NO system sellers in Japan.
The people who have bought it until now are mostly Sony fanboys or people who have a lot of money to spend, and nothing to spend it on.

      • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

The issue isn’t why *wouldn’t* it fall, the issue is that it fell at all! Sony’s gotta shape up in Japan, that’s just not right, especially 2 times in a row.

        • kurosan9712

I kinda gave up on PS4 for the time being. It’ll just either die later, or get up. I just need to wait.

          • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

I don’t blame you. I already know if I get one it won’t be for Japanese support but for Naughty Dog or one of the western world wide studio games. And since that’s not as compelling to me, I might just be able to hold off my purchase for awhile yet.

            • kurosan9712

Sony kinda went for the western direction with PS4, well, they can only blame themselves now for bad sales in Japan(I’ve read a ton of complaints on japanese sources that they received PS4 after USA/EU).
Well, same as with PS3, I’m going to wait. Meanwhile, WiiU starts getting games I want, so I’m getting it in the end of summer.

              • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

I was sitting here thinking the same thing earlier (about WiiU) but they screwed up the Mario Kart 8 bundle. It’s too much for my budget but I don’t want to miss the opportunity to get a free game either =/ There was quite a few “surprise” Wii games I didn’t touch that I want to play, I managed to snag a brand new copy of Sin and Punishment after getting rid of my Wii too, so that’s another thing haunting me =/

                • RampagingSoul

You have until July 31st to register the game at Club Nintendo to get the free game. You just need a copy of Mario Kart 8 and the Club Nintendo code inside. Technically, all you need is an unused code to register from a copy of the game. But I understand completely about how the bundle can be out of your budget and you don’t want to buy the game until you have the console.

                  • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

                    Exactly right, not to say I haven’t bought games without the console before. I did that for…PS Vita, PS2, and Xbox 360. I might just bite the bullet and do it for WiiU too as it might be a little while before I can take the plunge. Thanks for the update on the exact time frame too, July’s a good month for me to shop but I’ve got other platforms to buy games for too ><;

                    • RampagingSoul

No problem. Glad I could help.

  • asch999

“Mario Golf: World Tour was the top seller in Japan this past week. The 3DS Mario sports game opened at XXX sales.”

I guess your prediction that Mario Golf Tour gonna take the first place was off :D

  • RampagingSoul

Dat Yokai Watch tho… It’ll never stop… I wouldn’t be surprised if it stays close to the top 20 until Yokai Watch 2 comes out or until other heavy hitting software comes out that makes it fall down reasonably.

  • Mikail

i wander what kind of games that will save console market on Japan?

  • Eder García

wow @ child of light! good job Ubisoft.
Yokai Watch confirmed as established franchise.

  • shogunknight

Wow, the overall sales seem pretty low for golden week. PS4 was the only one that made a drop.

  • Guest

I imagine this must be the atmosphere at the Level-5 office:

  • Dave Kokandy

Editor, delete the first sentence, maybe? I’m probably the XXX th person to notice it.

  • Bitterbear

Last year on the same time frame the Wii U sold more units than the PS4 did this past week.

This could be delicious troll baiting ammo except that beneath the dismal sales numbers, there’s something inherently wrong happening within the gaming industry. Anyone else is concerned that a videogame crash is imminent in the near future?
