New information on Media Vision's upcoming RPG.

Shining Resonance

Famitsu has gone up with its online preview for Shining Resonance, Sega’s newly announced PlayStation 3 RPG from Media Vision.

The preview offers first direct-feed screenshots and new details.

First, here’s the story outline:

In an ancient continent, a land of God known as “Alfheim” exists.

A long time has passed since the dragons who were once powerful in this world perished. Its souls were crystallized and scattered about the world.

However, a dragon survived. And its name is “Kouryuu Irvan.” Seeking the power of the lost dragon, the Imperial Army and Church powers, and now a “Dragon Slayer” who intends to harm the dragon, have begun to stir.

The one who saved the dragon from their clutches was a single “young girl.” And before long, warriors known as “Dragon Instrumentalists” began to gather under the dragon. The dragon recalled a childhood memory of a “young girl” who saved him when he was injured. It was a reunion of fate.

A beautiful and painful story about the girl and the dragon will be told.

Shining Resonance uses a real-time action battle system where players control a single character. There is a dragon in the party, and party members can fight by manipulating song.

Shining Resonance Shining Resonance

The protagonist of this story is the Kouryuu (Shining Dragon) Irvan, the surviving dragon whose existence affected the way the world came about. Because of its power, it is targeted by a variety of people.

Shining Resonance

Sonia Blanche is the “lightning princess” of the kingdom of Astoria. She is leading the people in a fight for the country’s revival. She is high-spirited and always strong for the protagonist.

Shining Resonance

Shining Resonance is in development for PlayStation 3.

Not being an ass but these look like PS2 graphics

The game will probably still be fun but most devs have unlocked the power of the PS3 by now, it’s not like they’re making this on the PS4

    • Stryker_X20

And how does it look like PS2 graphics?

      • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

The colors are washed out, they aren’t vibrant

        • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

Graphics be damned, is it fun, is it an rpg, is it deep, is the game long? That’s what I care about. Good graphics are great, but too many devs ONLY focus on graphics. Besides this game is a work in progress.

          • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

I did say that the game looked like a PS2 game but it could be fun though

            • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Well, try not to bash it too much. It would look awfully silly of you, especially considering you changed your avatar to a character from the game you’re complaining about, heh.

              • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

                Lol

    • Stryker_X20

I’d give gamers like you a nickel every time people would whine like that.

      • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

I don’t think you know what whining is

    • xkumo

Have you ever seen a PS2 game?

      • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Maybe my brain is warped who knows

      • desponent

It looks like Suikoden 3 on PCSX2.

    • Ladius

The PS2 comparison seems really undeserved, honestly. Regardless, you may want to hold your judgement about this game’s graphics till better quality screenshots become available, the character models should be really nice since they’ve been outsourced to Flight Unit, the same studio contracted by Gust for the Atelier character models since Totori. If I’m not mistaken the first scan had a close-up image of a character model.

      • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Yeah that’s true, I plan on getting the game regardless though

    • http://hatintime.com/ ShadowFang

Well that’s no surprise. A lot of Japanese devs the size of a Media.Vision haven’t changed their production pipelines or game-making techniques SINCE the PS2 days. Media Vision has been working on platforms like the DS, PSP and Mobile for the past few years, so they really haven’t had a reason to even look into new game creation technique.

Also, the budget for the game is probably pretty modest. So best not get too complex with the environments when you’re gonna need large playspaces for dungeons and field maps and stuff. Not a lot of games from over there have a huge budget or utilize great tech currently (though there are a few notable exceptions to be sure). A lot of Japanese PS3 games look like this. It’s not surprising by now, is it? They focus on style and art to compensate. But there’s only so much that can be done, and it’s not differentiating it much from really great looking, late-gen PS2 games.

And that’s totally not an exaggeration, I got some composite cables for my PS2 a few weeks ago and fired up Dark Cloud 2, while I was still playing through Tales of Xillia. After the Composite cables made it so that my PS2 looked GOOD on my HDTV, I swear, DC2 looks better than Xillia. Has a nicer color palette, and executes the cel-shading on characters better too… not to mention, it has physics objects like Monica’s ponytail, whereas Tales’ clearly “cheats it” by using extra bones in their hair & cloth (as in the bones for the animation rig), resulting in stiff, limited secondary animation for that kind of thing.

Xillia has larger draw distance, but it’s still breaking up it’s world into smallish segments … in 2014? That’s crazy. Not to mention, the larger areas take, like, 8-11 seconds for all the identical NPC models to fade in and NOT wander around. It really is unfortunate how “PS2-like” a lot of Japanese PS3 games have been. Dark Cloud 2, still, is really pretty though :)

The PS4 is going to have an even harder time of it unless smaller devs over there start adapting to middleware and embracing a lot of the solutions western devs have created for making games easier… here’s hoping Unity-Japan, and Unity-Chan, starts taking off. The gaming industry in general over there could use with a swift kick to the butt. i don’t know what happened to their ambition back in 2006 or so, when devs jumped onboard trying to learn Unreal 3 and keeping pace with the rest of the world. Games like Frame City Killer, Coded Arms Assault and Last Remnant were some of the FIRST UE3-powered games shown off. China and S. Korea have no problem using current technology – just look at stuff like Black Desert or Monster Hunter Online. Heck, a lot of AAA games here in the West use outsourcing from Chinese devs.

Granted, they DID outsource the characters to another company in this case, so those look great. But they do clash with the backgrounds, which ARE built like a PS2 game. Same case for Tales of Xillia, Zestiria, Ragnarok Odyssey ACE and the Atelier games.

But I’m ranting at this point. You’re right, it does look like a great PS2 game, and in 2014, that’s kind of disappointing. Especially compared to the LAST major Shining game, Shining Force Cross:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJEHQtSkddE

But it’s got good art for the character models, and we should be used to this look by now. There’s nothing wrong with a great looking PS2 game ;)

    • desponent

You should’ve get used to it, I mean it’s been what, 7 years? And no it’s not changing anytime soon.

    • Elvick

I don’t see it. Looks like a game with a low to moderate budget on PS3 to me.

      • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

        That’s probably it

  • Leon_Tekashi

Real time action battle system…Suddenly, the Tales of Series and Star Ocean come to mind. lol

  • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

Do shining game come over outside of jpn anymore? Is it ok for me to want this? Because I do. Even though I’m tire of Norse mythology.

    • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Don’t believe there’s been one since the PS2 days

      • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

Damn. Maybe they’ll still bring since all systems could use more RPGs.

      • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

That would be correct. The last one we ever had localized was EXA and that was in 2007. Hard to believe it’s been 7 years. I wonder if there will be any difference with this title.

I doubt it though! PS3 support is dying more and more with each passing day in North America. Westerners are always so quick to ditch their old hardware and move onto new things, whereas Japanese continue to keep supporting the hardware, haha.

        • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

I know right, I think part of the reason is western devs always push graphics over gameplay

I remember a Microsoft executive commenting about a games graphics looking terrible but didn’t comment on the game itself

        • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

I have no choice but to keep old stuff of half my library of games can’t be played. After all, I only have two games on ps4.

        • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹
          • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

            Okay?

            • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

He was commenting on how who keeps their old consoles

              • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Well yeah, but keeping and supporting are two different things. I keep my old consoles, but that doesn’t mean they continue to make games for them. North America was quick to toss aside the PS2 once the PS3 came out and I’m sure they will do the same with the PS3 before too much longer, which is why I’ll have to continue to rely on Japan for more games on PS3.

                • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Which is great since there’s a lot of great games on PS3 in Japan, same goes for the Vita and Vita TV

                  • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Yep yep. There will continue to be for a while too. I’d say until the end of 2016 or so.

  • Eclipse

This is sounding pretty damn good.

Hopefully the battle system will be as fun as Shining Ark’s.

    • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

The only shining game I tried was exa and I was bad at defending the fort. I quit and hoped for another shinning game.

  • Ksatmata

does anyone know which one is tony?
or maybe there is no tony?

    • http://www.cubiz.tk/ Auragar

The guy on the right (to our perspective).

    • Ryumoau

the one on the right is kinda cute. lol

  • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Well, I’m definitely not disliking the layout so far, but I’ll still have to see it in action to be sure! So far though, it looks like it will be a lot of fun~!

  • bloodiOS

    *cries and screams*

    • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

      Sorry

  • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Nice bonus for those who get Famitsu Weekly, they’re going to start a postcard campaign soon

  • Tales of the shining Kiseki. as in sen no kiseki battle portrait and a sort of tales of look of the battle system… hahah can’t wait for more info.

  • Northstar

There are other RPG with Dragon ( not hybrid dragon/ human/ wathever) main protagonist? I really curious!

  • 罪罰

    dem elfs

    hnngg

  • dark-kyon

i dont understand how tony taka keep in work,to me his work is lazy, every girl look like the same and when he dare to do some collaboration art he is not able to draw at nobody well what not look like a of his clonic designs,at least i gonna admit what his lolis designs are goood.but is only thanks at what he do not do much of them.apart of that overrated guy.

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. A lot of Masamune Shirow’s artwork looks similar to each other too, but you’d be a fool to call him a lazy artist.

      • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

        That’s very true

      • DrForbidden

Actually, he’s been pretty lazy this past decade, in my opinion. He’s largely been producing nothing but variation porn. Don’t get me wrong, it’s gorgeous porn, but he really should start making some manga again…

        • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

^ implying producing porn makes one lazy

          You’re grasping at straws.

          • DrForbidden

No, I’m implying producing porn that tends to be just slightly-altered variations on a particular image is lazy. Much of his current work is just digitally manipulating one or two drawn characters into different backgrounds and settings, instead of producing new drawn character art.

That’s pretty lazy in my book. If you don’t think that’s lazy, that’s certainly your right, just as it’s mine to disagree. No need for you to make accusations.

            • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

I don’t think you really understand how art works if you truly believe that, but okay then. Best just agree to disagree on this matter if that’s how you feel.

              • DrForbidden

Well, there’s commercial art and non-commercial art, and there are differences in required productivity between them. But anyway, yes, let’s just agree to disagree on that point.

                • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

For future reference, when someone tells you that we should just agree to disagree, please don’t continue to drag it out just to have the last word. It’s rather immature. Thanks.

                  • DrForbidden

                    OK, noted.

    • 罪罰

his gurls are so sexy m8 can’t hate that

    • Chestnut Bowl

Most character designers that draw nothing but cute girls have the same issue.

  • Protagonist

A dragon as a main protagonist….mixed feels man.

  • Six

The main character is a dragon? That’s pretty cool, and different too. I’ll be sure to look into this when Sega…

    Oh.

    Right.

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

I’ll be sure to look into this when you import it…

      Oh.

      Right.

      • Six

        I can’t read Japanese.

        • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

          And that’s Sega’s fault how exactly…?

          • Six

And you are being such an ass why exactly…?

            • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Suddenly I’m being an ass because I’m pointing out that you’re just as responsible for not being able to play it as Sega is for not localizing it?

              k

              • Six

No, you’ve always been an ass.

                • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

I guess pointing out facts constitutes as me being an ass, but that’s fine. I’m an ass then. It just bothers me that so many people (such as yourself) are so quick to blame companies for not localizing a game (for a region-free console no less), as if they should be held accountable for you not being able to play it. You can’t read Japanese? Fine.

Quit bitching about it being Sega of America’s fault that you can’t play it. Go study or at least be willing to admit that you’re just as much at fault as they are for not being able to play it, because of your lack of Japanese knowledge.

                  • Six

Can’t say I’d be willing to learn a new language for something as trivial as video games, but thanks for the advice.

                    Ass.

                    • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

and I was about to say that you’re one of my favorite posters here

                    • Six

I’m always happy to disappoint. That last one was a joke though.

But you know what? I apologize. I shouldn’t have acted like that. Something about him just brings out the worst in me sometimes. A lot of the time.

Again, I apologize for getting this off-topic, and for insulting you, Tetsuya.

                    • gulabjamal

Ooooh Six, you a class act.
I actually agree because Sega of America stands to gain from the English speaking market by having their game translated and voice in English.

Localization is a hell of a lot less work than game development itself and with something this quality, they could really revitalize the Shining series name worldwide by localizing this specific title.

I do agree that I don’t plan to learn a new language for video games. I won’t take it out on them as their fault though. I just hope they’ll get it translated

                    • 罪罰

I wouldn’t find it trivial if you spend the majority of your time playing them and bitching about them here.

                    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

For how much I import, I’d hardly consider it trivial, haha. It may seem that way in the beginning, but you learn more as you progress. It’s just funny he’d rather spend his time bitching about it instead of putting that energy towards something productive, you know… Like learning.

                    • Lara Croft

I totally agree. If you find video games trivial then you won’t mind Sega not localizing it at all.

                    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Still, that’s your responsibility. You can’t honestly expect me to not hold you accountable when you basically just said, “I’d rather blame them than take responsibility because I’m too lazy to learn.”, lol. Hell, I only learned Japanese for video games. I imported a lot of simple stuff in the beginning.

Fighting games, rhythm games, racing games, that sort of thing. I wanted to play RPGs though, so I started with a game I was already familiar with by importing the Ys I&II remake for PS2 and practiced with that since I was already familiar with the script and there was some new dialogue in it too, so that helped. Basically, I just think it’s pretty funny whenever someone is like, “Boo-hoo. I want to play this game, but I can’t because they won’t localize it.” and I’m sitting here thinking to myself, “Okay…? Import it then.”, then you turn around and want to tell me, “But I can’t read T_T”, lol.

Something’s gotta give, man. I’ve given you options in order to play it, but you turned those down. So, fine. Don’t play it then. No no no, that won’t do either. You’d rather complain about them not localizing the game.

You’ll never be satisfied it seems.

            • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

He wasn’t being an ass, just saying it’s not Sega’s fault

              • LordKaiser

                How it’s not SEGA’s fault?

                • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Basically, it’s not Sega’s fault that he doesn’t understand Japanese. The matter has already been settled though, so there’s no reason to continue this.

                  • LordKaiser

He’s clearly talking about SEGA of America so I don’t see the relation but oh well.

                    • Lara Croft

You can’t always get what you want. It’s not possible for Sega or any Japanese company to localize every single game. It sucks if you happen to be a fan of the series, but if you really like it that much, then you can make effort on your part to do something about it.

But if you don’t, then just move on.

                    • LordKaiser

But not localizing even one? I understand about not localizing a few games for reasons but almost all new Shiny games and Phantasy Star?

The next step is not moving on but pestering them with petitions.

  • Ryumoau

Wow…this game looks great. I’m hungry for a new polished jrpg for ps3 that isn’t another low budget Nisa game.

    • desponent

      Shining game and “polished”? haha…

      • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

I was more surprised at the fact that they put NISA and low budget in the same sentence. Why would he be blaming the North American branch since they aren’t the ones creating the games? Secondly, NIS has a much bigger budget than they used to.

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Nowe in Drakengard 2 was part dragon as he transformed into a form of it late game.

No he didn’t, he stays human on all the ending and not part dragon or anything, he’s a newtyp- I mean new breed of human.

    • http://hatintime.com/ ShadowFang

      You’re such a pessimist :)

Remember, SEGA owns Atlus now. And Atlus LOVE localizing great jrpgs for us Westerners. Right now, they have to be keeping an eye on games to localize AFTER their slate of Persona projects are all done… and you’d have to imagine that a game like this, from parent company SEGA, has got to look like an attractive candidate for localization.

      • MTK

I want this, and yeah your correct like I told someone on another site. I bet it will come over, with atlus under sega I’m sure we’re going to be getting it.

      • LordKaiser

Still waiting for Phantasy Star Online 2? We are near the end of episode 2.

        • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

          Keeping the hope alive!

Let’s just put this on our list of other wants from Sega including Shenmue III being made and having Valkyria Chronicles 3 localized, lol.

          • LordKaiser

New Falz separates the bad players from the good. hardest boss yet. I love it’s drops, even the units are great.

            • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Honestly, PSO2 was never difficult to begin with anyway. It would be more like Hard mode Titan separating the bad players from the scrubs in FFXIV, lol. I doubt we’ll really see any difficult bosses in this particular game though… Not with how RPGs have been going these days.

Doesn’t mean it won’t be any fun though :o

        • Elvick

          Vaporware localization imo.

      • Arcliff7

Well, ATLUS did localize Conception II (imo a great game), maybe we will be seeing this in the west.

    • Hikari Langley

With an action battle system, and amazing 3D graphics. I wouldn’t say we have no change of getting this game.

It has a pretty good chance to become one of our 2015 releases for the PS3. SEGA has an E3 booth, so peeps should start complaining to them about this gem, and PSO2. If you are attending that is.

  • http://chaosraiden.blogspot.com/ Chaos Raiden

Looks good. Another great game to add in my PS3 collection if it is ever going to be released in English.

  • Duc PC-QB

UI is kinda rip off from Sen no Kiseki

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Implying they were the ones to actually come up with the UI to begin with. Very few RPGs these days don’t take from others when it comes to their UI.

    • 罪罰

that’s like the most generic UI.

Real Time Battle system… based on battle interface, maybe similar to Tales or Star Ocean, but who knows…

i just looked at the full article, there’s actually 3 more character that get introduced (i think the elf one already covered in the very first article)

for those who want to see them, it’s here

    How disappointing.

I was so excited to begin with: Media.Vision, RPG, PS3…

Then: Real-Time Battle system, control single character.

Ugh. Why? Has Media.Vision ever even done an action battle system? Why change now? Everyone does action. MV specializes in turn-based, and turn-based console RPGs are basically extinct. This could’ve reversed the trend. What a waste.

Oh, and just to preempt any needlessly negative responses: I can’t criticize a battle system I’ve never played, obviously. I’m criticizing the choice to make this game this particular genre. I prefer turn-based to action, and there are far more action RPGs these days. We don’t need more.

our only hope for turn-based rpg are persona 5

According to what you want, i think you should stick more with handheld consoles like 3ds and Vita or smartphones, since those systems would having more turn based jrpg than TV consoles.

  • SageShinigami

Damn. This looks…GOOD. I was trying to be done with my PS3, though.
