A look at Persona 4's super idol in action.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax

Atlus has released the debut trailer for Rise Kujikawa in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, who is making her playable debut in the fighter sequel.

See the super idol in action below.

Addition, “CS versions” of the first two trailers were also released. I’m not quite sure what that means exactly, but you can find them below.

  • Eternal Wing

The only difference between the first two original trailers and “CS versions” is the release date and some minor information.. Adachi confirmed for DLC?

  • http://www.samuraiprincess.com Mr Fwibbles

Back when they kept pushing out bemani games constantly, Konami used “CS” to mean “Console Style”.

  • TheExile285

Did I hear “Super Hentai Idol”??

Anyway, nice to see her playable.

    • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

I swore I heard that too but considering how Rise is always trying to put the moves on our beloved MC, I can’t blame em for saying that xD I totally love her for it though.

    • Anime10121

      Yep xD

  • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Ugh, Rise’s japanese voice…no, gosh no. Hearing her as Nagi, uh what’s her name in Familiar of Zero F, and uh Tora Dora was enough for me…no, not Rise…that’s annoying, that’s really annoying. Okay, putting that aside though, she looks like she plays well. Very adorable animations but of course, until you’ve thoroughly explored said movesets it’s hard to make a full judgement call. It’s enough to get hyped either way.

    • DarthBrian

      Rie Kugimiya is amazing. >_<

      • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Sure, in other roles but this one. Grossly miss cast.

        • Realist

          I grossly disagree.

        • Sevyne

          Completely disagree with you.

          • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

You’re entitled to your opinion but I at least am willing to back my opinion up with rational explanation, are you willing to debate this with me with the same explanations? Seems like I got the whole Rie defense force out for me.

            • Sevyne

Rational explanation? I sure didn’t see any. All I saw was, stuff like “Nope, grossly miscast, didn’t like her as X or Y either, she’s so annoying”.

I also find it extremely silly that you want to turn rival opinions into some sort of debate like one of us will come out some decisive winner. Here’s the thing, nobody will…That’s why they’re opinions, and I simply happen to disagree with you that she was grossly miscast.

Then you go an try to belittle everyone with your “Rie defense force” comment because people didn’t pat you on the back or something. Maybe people simply don’t agree and that’s all. So don’t give me that “You’re entitled to your opinion” nonsense when you follow it up with extremely backhanded comments. Don’t really want to hear it.

        • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

You know what, I agree with you here. Like you, I quite like Rie Kugimiya. I just don’t think she quite fits Rise. I attach a different voice to her character in my mind when I think of Rise. Not just Laura Bailey either.

          • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

That’s actually a pretty reasonable response. I use to do that when there was no english dub and you had to read subtitles. Suddenly those snazzy japanese lines you pick up in a moment’s pause, sounded like the hottest thing ever, because you had a voice in your mind + the awesome translation of whatever the line was.

    • りんごタルト@エスカのアトリエ

Hating Kugyuuu on any role is like hating everything moe in the world.

      • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Not at all, it just means she didn’t deliver the moe I was looking for. Moe is a feeling first and foremost and that’s not something easy to describe but you know it when you feel it and not for JP Rise, I don’t feel it.

    • PrinceHeir

Lol what? Queen of Tsundere being dismissed? Not even her English counterpart can do a good job portraying her character.

English is not Moe enough for her.

Next i’ll hear Fuuka English voice actor is better than the Japanese(Lol no one can replace Mamiko Noto) even though it’s the worst voice i have ever heard in an English Dub.

      • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Fuuka, from P3…? Ah! Hmm, I just went and listened to a voice clip for her from FES cause it’s been awhile since I’ve played P3. I have not heard Fuuka’s japanese voice, so I can’t make any comparison but based on her localized character; I can understand what Atlus was striving to achieve. I’m not sure I agree with it though but since I didn’t spend hours with the character I’m going to refrain from judging that. I have spent most of my time wooing and being targed by Rise in english; so I feel qualified enough to talk about her.

The Queen of Tsundere is being dismissed because the character is not tsundere, simple as that. And did I just hear not “moe” enough as a reason? Really?! REALLY?! Nevermind actually fitting the character which yes your Queen of Tsundere is totally not suited to this character’s personality at all. This isn’t even defensible, there were some much better options out there and I actually enjoy Rie Kugimiya a fair bit.

        • PrinceHeir

          Nope.

Fuuka isn’t an annoying brat in the Japanese version. She’s actually a gentle person that fits her character. I withstand her English voice throughout the game. But when i played the JPN P3P version, i told myself why the hell did i went through all that in the first place?

First of all Rie is not only The Queen of Tsundere, but she’s also a singer and a pop idol in real life just like Rise.

I understand people have their preferences for voices, but your telling me a real life Japanese pop idol singer can’t replicate it’s own role from a its character which is a Japanese style idol created for Japanese society in a Japanese setting high school? BS

Now that i think about it. Most of American high schools don’t even act like that in the English dub. Most are busy talking about who’s the next girl they’ll fuck with the next day.

And they have a better grasp on what makes a Japanese pop idol a Japanese idol. You don’t just look at idol songs from youtube videos from Japan and call it a day.

I enjoyed Laura’s voice, but the more i hear of her, the more i notice she’s sounds older than she looks which is actually the usual characters she do in her career.

And i’m sorry, but her English songs in the game lack the pop-idolness Rise was created for. No enthusiasm or up beat voice, just plain monotone voice throughout song. It actually even sounds boring at times since it lacks the power to it.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6R0vUAkEeZQ

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tGLzVC_zPA

Even FFXIII-2 you’ll notice that change of her tone throughout the game. This seems to be a problem with English dub where they can’t keep their young voice throughout the scene without changing depending on the scenes.

The only one i can think of that can pull that is the voice actor of Ash Ketchum from Pokemon.

In the end you can choose whatever voice you like. I just disagree HEAVILY on why you think so otherwise from Rie Kugimiya of all people.

If you don’t like her voice or don’t agree with my opinion that’s fine and all. I’m just providing why i think she can do this role fine and even better since she herself is an idol in real life.

          • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Well, I’m not gonna go all out and defend Fuuka when I haven’t had enough time with her one way or another but immediately your criticism there just doesn’t sound accurate to me. In english she doesn’t sound like an annoying brat, that would actually be more befitting a character with a higher pitch voice, like Rise. So I don’t believe that angle can be used anymore. Better you tell me monotone, I can then agree with that but then I’d raise you that it’s not unlike the shy quiet girl in traditional western High School stuff.

Now let’s talk about your defense for Japanese Rise, cause I think this can be a lively and relatively fair debate.

“I understand people have their preferences for voices, but your telling me a real life Japanese pop idol singer can’t replicate it’s own role from a its character which is a Japanese style idol created for Japanese society in a Japanese setting high school? BS”

Yes, actually I can because you seem to believe that every idol is created equally. That’s not true, every idol has a different voice, a different appeal and a specific demure with their fans. My feelings for Rise idol wise stem from both her personality in game as well as the character design. When I see her, I see her as a more mature, softer tone upbeat idol. She’s got lots of enthusiasm, assertive, etc Of which I don’t deny seeing those traits in Japanese Rise’s voice but, it misses the first points. Mature, softer tone. She just sounds like one of those middle school idols instead and it’s high pitched too, that kills me personally.

“Now that i think about it. Most of American high schools don’t even act like that in the English dub. Most are busy talking about who’s the next girl they’ll fuck with the next day.”

This was seen in P4G, the male students were a riot, it was hillarious and awesome. It had a japanese spin obviously but boys will be boys no matter what side of the pond they’re on.

“And they have a better grasp on what makes a Japanese pop idol a Japanese idol. You don’t just look at idol songs from youtube videos from Japan and call it a day.”

I agree that there’s more to it but then…are you going to deny that you do need to watch different idol’s work to get a feel for how each idol is managed? I’m a lot more knowledgeable about this stuff than meets the eye my friend. Don’t underestimate me <3

"I enjoyed Laura's voice, but the more i hear of her, the more i notice she's sounds older than she looks which is actually the usual characters she do in her career."

This is our impass. Japanese one sounds younger than she looks, english one sounds older than she looks. Let me raise you something that's interesting in regards to the english side. If you watch a lot of Disney shows where the main is a fairly decent translation of a pop idol when they sing, it's natural for western talents to sound older than they are during the song performance. Typically, western female voice ranges are softer/deeper than the japanese equivalent. The goal here was to provide a familiar feel to the audience, while still portraying her as an idol. In that sense, I believe Laura did a bang on job. In normal conversation she's more than youthful too. Now, in fairness to our debate, I don't think I can proudly proclaim my love of Laura Bailey. I fiercely admire her work, so there's my bias more than out of the way. That doesn't mean I won't call her on something or know when she's not cast well.

Alright now let me end this on a good note. I admitted this in another comment but I'm going to put it out there again. I LIKE Rie Kugimiya. Alright, so that's out of the way. I do not believe she was the right choice for Rise. I would have much preferred a different seiyuu. I do not believe one needs to be an idol irl in order to sell the character of an idol, after all this is acting. It's all about how you sell it, especially with your voice.

        • PrinceHeir

Also i think we had this conversation before with Chie and Akihiko’s voice.

If you want to play the JPN P3P or even P2 IS you can get it here(if you have the firmware)

          • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Admittedly I don’t but I figure since people do I’ll invest in watching a YouTube walkthrough in the future, preferably after I finish P3P in english first. I haven’t even touched P2 IS yet so I guess same thing applies. Actually we had this discussion but it was more educational yes =3

Those slaps (lol)… btw, i’m curious about that DLC.

  • Don

SEGA better take note of this and add vocaloids (read megurine luka) to Dengeki bunko climax

  • DarthBrian

    Once again…

    mmmmmmm…Shadow Rise. <3

  • pixxxelz

I would have preferred Fuuka to be honest :/
Oh well I know Sho is going to be my mc anyways dat install kill!
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnDpZypLDho&app=desktop

    • PrinceHeir

Don’t worry they might put her in the next game :P

This won’t be the last revision that’s for sure.

Was hoping Sho has like a special dialogue with Aegis just because the voice actors are husband and wife Kenichi Suzumiya and Maaya Sakomoto XD

      • pixxxelz

Well I’m all down for a 1.5 (2.5?) Version on ps4 or vita, and yeah it would be cool if they did that in the alternative endings

  • Jake_Indiman

So yeah, we have Rise, Ken, and maybe Adachi? What about Kuromaru, Fuuka, and Margaret?

  • new_tradition

Ick, I hope the scenario is free for everyone. At least release it on PSN/Live at for free at release to let everyone get it. I don’t think I’ll be able to get this game at release, so I don’t wanna miss out :O

Anyways, Rise looks like she’ll be fun to play with. Her microphone gimmick is pretty cute xD

  • りんごタルト@エスカのアトリエ

    Mai new main is here!

    • PrinceHeir

Btw your name is Ringo Taruto@ Esuka no Atorii?

      • Kobracon

“AtoriE”. Remember, the Katakana that looks like an “I” is actually an ‘e’.

        • PrinceHeir

          Yeah thanks for the reminder.

The i and e of Katakana can be confusing at times.

Not to mention I think in hiragana if your gonna right a double “ee” you have to use “い” as the duplicate letter i think.

          • Kobracon

Not sure what you mean. If you want to write an extended sound you just write “えー”

  • Kobracon

WOOT! Awesome! Never thought I’d get to see her fight but here she is! Can’t wait to try her out!

  • artemisthemp

Now I just wait on Marie been playable
