Square Enix MMORPG reaches new milestone.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn user account registrations have exceeded two million worldwide, Square Enix announced.

The game has been available for PlayStation 3 and PC since September last year, and launched yesterday for PlayStation 4. Patches, like the recent 2.2 “Through the Maelstrom” update, add new content on a regular basis.

If you missed it, catch the PlayStation 4 launch trailer here.

    • Martian Wong

Now, you must show me how pretty your character.

      • Elvick

Have to wait for my CE to arrive.

I’ll show you my deceased character, version 1.0

        2.0 I don’t have anymore cause I deleted everything

        • Elvick

          Pretty!

  • bloodiOS

How many of those are PS4 users? How many are pirates?

    • maruhadapurpurine

Pirates? dude this is a subscription based mmo, how is someone going to pirate it?

      • bloodiOS

Well, you have to get the game first before subscribing, no?

        • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

You only get like 30 days or so for the trial before the sub starts but i think you need to enter in your code you get from buying the game for that to kick in

          • http://kazriko2.tumblr.com Kazriko Redclaw

You can’t actually create an account without the code that they give you with the game, so that’s a limiting factor on piracy too.

            • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

              Ahh nice

    • Zackasaur

About 200,000 are brand new PS4 players. I have no idea how many PS3 players transferred to PS4 in addition.

Piracy is basically a non-factor here. It’s subscription-based, for one. Furthermore, it’s a cheap client to buy and a pain to crack. And the torrents are barely alive. lol

      • bloodiOS

Well, I’m only joking there but when you say that it’s a pain to crack does that not only apply to the PC version? What about those who pirated and play the game on the PS3 running custom firmware?

        • Zackasaur

I was talking about PC. PS3 is worse, really.

PS3 piracy is inherently negligible due to the annoyance, risk, and difficulty. lol It’s a massive hassle which frequently prevents online play after firmware updates, so that makes FFXIV all the less likely. PS3 pirates are primarily desperate gamers from nations where gaming is less accessible.

It looks like those torrents are pretty inactive as well, but that’s unsurprising. It was interesting to check, though. :P

Plus, like I said, the client is cheap anyway… I can buy a physical PS3 copy for $25, meaning that the client (physical) is $10. I’ve even seen it for $15 digital on PC during an Amazon sale, making the client itself free for a little while.

          • bloodiOS

            Huh, interesting.

          • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Well said, I’d also like to add the PS3 is not exactly cheap in the nations where one would attribute piracy to. If you’ve got one you’re more likely to pay for games.

  • new_tradition

Impressive, but a good chunk will probably be gone after next month when they have to actually pay for their subs :P

    • Zackasaur

Most do pay for subs. :P

And even those who take breaks come back for updates and expansions.

FFXIV ARR is an official success. c:

      • new_tradition

Oh, I agree. I love FFXIV:ARR, but money problems are why I quit it. I’m just saying there will likely be a noticeable dip next month. But as you say, it’s pretty successful, so the numbers will stabilize ^^

        • Zackasaur

Yeah, some people definitely drop off and usually come back later. c:

But the active numbers are always high. I don’t think the dips are all that noticeable.

          • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

I dropped off due to game mechanics, won’t be going back

I’m sure they don’t miss my money though

            • Zackasaur

Most FFXIV players are exceedingly pleased with the mechanics. Hence the successful subscription model in a time when hardly anyone can pull that off.

              • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

The overall mechanics are good, I just have issues with the global cooldown which makes tanking a chore rather than fun

Other classss in the game perform great

    • seyEliveD

A good chunk are probably not playing atm. I played for about a month at PC release (a long while back), and I’m certainly included as a registered user although I don’t currently subscribe.

@Zackasaur And no. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with FFXIV and won’t ever go back.

  • LordKaiser

A MMO with a a weak character creator sold this much.

    • http://kazriko2.tumblr.com Kazriko Redclaw

The storyline and gameplay more than make up for the character creator.

      • LordKaiser

I don’t like to see clones of the characters that I make. They should add a new character creator and give everyone 1 free pass to change their character.

        • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Legacy and beta players got an item to change their appearance for free and also if you sub the 30 day item I believe is the appearance changer vial thingy, I think I still have one on my deactivated account

        • http://kazriko2.tumblr.com Kazriko Redclaw

I actually have 2 character change items on all 3 of my characters. I haven’t used one yet. Of course, I haven’t actually seen a clone of my characters in game yet either.

      • seyEliveD

What? “Storyline and gameplay”? Where? I’ve yet to see these in the game. In fact, it’s the major problem I have with the game…the character interaction, story, gameplay, etc is all -middling- at best.

    • Zackasaur

It’s my favourite MMO in existence. It deserves even more success for its amazing qualities.

    • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

2 million isn’t a lot for a cross platform MMO

    • new_tradition

I’m not familiar with MMOS so I just liked what FFXIV offered. What would you say has a decent character creator then?

Not being snide, I’m honestly asking ’cause you got me curious xD

      • Skerj

EVE, APB, PSO2, Entropia Universe, City of Heroes/Villains in their day, and DC Universe come to mind.

        • Elvick

heh, DCUO has some ugly ass character models and ugly hair options.

          • Skerj

That’s why I listed it last!! It’s still robust but yeah, some of the models look somewhat janky. APB’s my favorite, especially if you’re just going on humans. Blade and Soul’s is pretty good too.

    • Elvick

The facial stuff isn’t that great, I found the cheeks/chin options useless, could barely notice a difference. Not one that made them look different. Not very many nose options either.

But, FFXIV has the best hair of any character creator I’ve personally used. And that’s all I care about. All three of my characters have awesome hair.

Most games have some ugly ass hair in their character creators.

      • Tetsu

Final Fantasy seems to set the bar for awesome hair in general I think.

        See: FF Cinemas

  • GODDUKEMONEXA

    AMAZING GAME! I LOVE IT!
