Some games score high, some low. We think.

Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment

This week’s Famitsu review scores are in. Sort of.

Our regular source for Famitsu news, which usually gets the magazine ahead of its Thursday release, has begun limiting the information it shares before it hits newsstands, resulting in not only censored information, but censored review scores, as well.

Here’s what we have for now. We’ll update these as they come in.

  • BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma (PSV) – 8/9/8/8 [33/40]
  • Bullet Soul: Infinite Burst (360) – 7/8/7/8 [30/40]
  • Chronostacia (PSP) – */8/7/7
  • Ga-Sen Love Plus Pengo! (360) – */7/5/6
  • Guruguru Tamagotchi! (3DS) – */7/6/8
  • If You Thought It Was Harem Paradise It Was Yandere Hell (PS3) – 7/8/7/5 [27/40]
  • Imasugu Oniichan ni Imouto Datte Iitai! (PSV) – 6/8/7/6 [27/40]
  • JS Girl: Doki Doki Model Challenge (3DS) – */7/7/7
  • Just Dance Wii U (Wii U) – 8/8/8/8 [32/40]
  • Kuroyukihime: Snow Black (PSP) – 7/*/7/6
  • Maple Story: Unmei no Shoujo (3DS) – 6/8/7/7 [28/40]
  • Muv-Luv: Photon Flowers (PS3) – 5/7/7/7 [26/40]
  • NES Remix 1+2 (Wii U) – 8/8/7/*
  • Rayman Legends (PSV) – 8/8/8/9 [33/40]
  • Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment (PSV) – 8/8/8/8 [32/40]
  • Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call (3DS) – 9/9/9/8 [35/40]

In related news, next week’s issue of the magazine will offer an update on Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, as well as what Famitsu’s calling its “greatest scoop” of the spring.

Thanks, Sokuho@Hokanko.

Famitsu had screwed me a lot with its “great scoop” last year.

    • EX+

Last year one of their surprise scoop on a ‘long awaited’ game was Killer Is Dead.
Hopefully the one they’re talking about here is P5, but I have a feeling it isn’t.

    Famitsu police!

Any particular reason as to why they started censoring the scores? Seems a bit silly since the scores are usually so close together, you can determine it through a process of elimination before they hit the newsstands anyway. Most of the time, if a game receives 8/9/9, then you can expect the last number to also be an 8 or a 9… The lowest being a 7 in that situation.

I don’t ever see scores that go something like 8/9/9/2. It just seems a little silly, that’s all. As for the “greatest scoop” though… I’ll just guess it will be something regarding Persona 5 since there’s an update for Persona Q and P4AU as well.

That’s probably way off, but it’s what I’m going with, lol.

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

Yeah, I dunno. They’d usually post like EVERYTHING from the mag before it hits stands. But I guess the Famitsu police got to them.

    • Budgiecat

      dunno

  • AlphaSixNine

Greatest scoop? Persona 5 coming to PS4 too maybe? That would be awesome lol

  • crimsonidol

I guess SAO will be next week’s number two, behind Theathrhythm which will lead with a great distance.

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

I don’t know… BBCP and Just Dance Wii U looks like they rated pretty well too :p

    • Lester Rat

Because of Famitsu scores? Preorders indicate that SAO will easily outsell Theathrhythm.

      • Renaldi Saputra

        I don’t think so..
PSV games rarely sell more than 50-60k first week, even anime adaptation game..
even though the PSP one sold 140k first week..

        • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

I think the PSP one only sold that many in the first week because people were still on a SAO kick and they had high hopes, lol.

          • Renaldi Saputra

ah, yes.. that could be a proper reason..
but many ppl were disappointed in the game..
so I don’t think it will sell even half well as the PSP one

        • Lester Rat

“PSV games rarely sell more than 50-60k…” this is no indication of anything. SAO will sell a lot more than those games you are thinking about.

          • Renaldi Saputra

            I don’t think so
many ppl who bought the PSP game had been disappointed of the game itself

        • Griever

Do you want to qualify that “rarely sell more than 50-60k first week” part?

Because off the top of my head: God Eater; Persona; Final Fantasy; Toukiden; Miku; Soul Sac; Senran Kagura; J-Stars; Legend of Heroes; Dangan-Ronpa & Dragon’s Crown all sold well past 60k FW. I’m sure there’s more, too.

Sword Art Online should have no problem blowing past that mark either, I’d have thought.

    • xytherion

review scores doesn’t equate to sales

    • Renaldi Saputra

      I don’t think so..
I expect only 50-60k sales first week
but it’s been a good number for PSV game first week sales

      • Griever

You might want to adjust your expectations up a little. I’m not expecting it to sell amazingly well, but a fair bit more than that. Check COMG pre-orders.

  • http://Gematsu.com Vayne

See again SAO receive this bad score. So why keep doing this game?

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

      8s aren’t bad.

      • sub_o

Sal is right. I’d be glad to get 8s if I were still at school. Definitely interested in trying it out in the future.

      • Altin

This. People back then thought that even games with a score of 8 are still decent, only with minimal flaws. Nowadays, way too many people are obsessed with seeing only games that are at least a 9 or 10/10 as interesting.

      • ConkerBFD

Almost all the Atlus and Nis RPGs receives 8 or below and I never played a bad one. Actually, they are fantastic.

    • Anime10121

What Sal said, and plus, the game sells well, so that in and of itself is enough reason for them to keep churning out SAO games

    • Kayseur

By the look of it, it’ll be a 32. The 32 games I got are usually fairly enjoyable, not that great but good enough to please fans. Plus anime adaptations often score under 30 (the first SAO got a 29) so that’s pretty good.

      • Renaldi Saputra

anime adaptation games were usually lack on the system, so that they’re rated 30 or below
except major anime games like one piece, dragon ball, naruto, etc

    • Renaldi Saputra

it’s somehow better than the PSP

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

You think 8 is a bad score? Are you from IGN where only 10s are worth playing?

  • Anime10121

Looks like Yandere hell is not gonna be all that great a VN….Honestly expected a little better for the title (since VN’s normally range around the 30’s), but those scores look horrible :(

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Maybe it went to VN Hell.

      • Anime10121

Not looking like a maybe ;P

Heck even Xblaze, which I hear is pretty lauded as a VN scored a 30, and this (unless the last review is a 10, which aint happenin) looks to be below even that :(

Oh well, not like I’m a fan of VN’s anyway, so it wouldve had to be quite the tale for me to get it, and thats only if it even got localized to begin with…

    • Josephl64

7 and 8 is good…as for the 5, it’s so far apart that I’m guessing it’s a problem with the reviewer not liking the archetype

  • Pyrofrost

So incoming Famitsu Review Scores update coming soon?

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

      when they’re in, we’ll update =p

      • Pyrofrost

        Hahaha, not a problem.
I just think it’s kind of funny that they only censored a single score. lol

  • http://www.cubiz.tk/ Auragar

Greatest scoop of the spring my ass. It is probably gonna be some stupid mobile game. >.<

  • Northstar

    Persona 5???

    • http://www.cubiz.tk/ Auragar

      That comes in winter.

      • 罪罰

        He means, the scoop.

        • http://www.cubiz.tk/ Auragar

Uh you realize this is like a week old. xD And eh I don’t want to believe its Persona 5 because when it turns out not to be I will be upset. So I will keep thinking it is some game that nobody cares about that much.

  • Elvick

Well this is silly. I’m sure they want to try and stimulate sales, but I don’t think this is how to do it. Not like people are going to buy it now because of this, they can wait a few days.

  • Zechs

Wow! Unless that * is a 1, Curtain Call scored amazingly! :D

  • AdamBoy64

I’d like to play that SAO game. It looks good.

I haven’t heard much of localisation prospects, but I’m guessing it’s not coming West.

  • AdamBoy64

NES Remix has a sequel. That’s cool.
I liked what I saw of the first one, but haven’t picked it up yet.

  • new_tradition

When does spring end? If their greatest scoop of the year ends up being really lame, that doesn’t bode well for future surprises-unless spring is ending and then we get into summer stuff :P

Also, lol at asterisks. They’re just ratings, c’mon now >.>

Interested in Theatrhythm. Luckily I never bought any DLC in the first game, so it won’t feel like a waste to me if I buy Curtain Call that has most of it included :3

  • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Greatest Scoop? This I need to see but judging by the censored reviews, quite a few games still did quite well even if we were to assume the censored score is a 0 or 1.

  • GODDUKEMONEXA

whats the matter with the asterisks? ah old days when famitsu rated FF12 with a perfect score

  • Oniros

This “censorship” sucks, let me tell you.

  • novurdim

So… still no follow-up on those asteriks?
