Set on the moon and due out for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.

A new Borderlands title set to fill the five year gap between the stories of Borderlands and Borderlands 2 will be announced soon, according to retailer GamePointsNow.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, as it’s reportedly titled, will be a PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC title developed by 2K Australia and set on the Pandora moon of Elpis. Borderlands 2 villain Handsome Jack will appear in the game, but this time as his former humble programmer self John. You’ll play as one of his four lieutenants—Athena the Gladiator, Wilhelm the Enforcer, Nisha the Lawbringer, and the militarized claptrap Fragtrap.

A couple of these characters appeared previously in the series, with Athena debuting in the ‘General Knoxxx’ expansion for the first game, and Willhelm in Borderlands 2 as a boss character.

New weapon types, including laser weapons and Cyro class guns, are also being readied, it’s reported. And jet packs will also help you get around the moon’s low gravity surface. Oxygen will be lootable in the form of “OX Kits,” and when fighting enemies, destroying their helmets is another way of gaining an advantage.

PAX East is happening in Boston this weekend, and 2K Games and Gearbox will be in attendance. It’s possible, if this is true, we’ll hear about it there.

Thanks, NeoGAF.

If this does turn out to be true, I find it to be odd how they’re not moving to current gen hardware with this. I mean, if they want to release it for 360 and PS3 on top of PS4 and XBOX One, that’s one thing, but to not include PS4 or XBOX One at all is pretty weird…

    • RedWolfe

That’s probably what strikes me as the most odd thing about the rumor.

Considering Randy Pitchford was one of the featured developers in the first ps4 reveal video, I highly doubt that they wouldn’t at least have an engine running on the new consoles.

      Guess we’ll find out soon.

They don’t have a publisher that they can suck the money out of this time.

The PS2 was still getting great games for a year or two after the PS3 released. I really don’t find this that strange.

      • TetsuyaHikari

Well yeah, but not all of the big IPs were staying behind either after the PS3 came out. Borderlands is pretty big, man. Releasing it multiplatform, but not including current gen consoles is just wat. A lot of the games you’re talking about were little niche titles here and there or new IPs that people hadn’t seen before, which were still being released for PS2.

Anything worth its salt though had already shifted to PS3 by that point. Besides, what you’re talking about is more of a Japanese thing anyway. North America pretty much ditched the PS2 shortly after the PS3 came out, much how they did with every other console.

PS3 came out in 2006, God of War 2 came in 2007 and Persona 3 FES and Persona 4 in 2008. There were other big names that came out in the PS2s dying years I recall…

          • TetsuyaHikari

Lol God of War. Yeah, I have no respect for people that dumped money into that franchise. It’s just… Whatever, I’m not even going there. As for Persona 3 FES and Persona 4, well… Persona 3 FES was an upgrade from Persona 3, which we already had.

Also, Persona 3 FES and Persona 4 are also Japanese, soooo… If it wasn’t for them still investing time and money into the PS2, I doubt we would have ever seen anything like that in the West.

            • Kobracon

Well I don’t know what your beef with GoW is but even regular ppl started disliking 3 onwards at least. GoW2 was still awesome and a great swansong for the PS2, not to mention Persona 4 which I would continue to play for years to come.

I don’t see how them being Japanese makes my statement any less true. A great game isn’t governed by where it came from.

Also just to add wood to the fire that I don’t really understand yet, I have bought, played and loved every single God of War up until Ascension.

    rip brothers in arms.

If you’re talking about Furious Four, they already said it turned into its own IP now, and is not a BIA game.

As for this, if it’s a 2K Australia game like the source reports, then it’s possible Gearbox is focusing its full efforts on Furious Four.

Definitely interested in this. I’m a huge Borderlands fan.

Borderlands 3 may be farther off than people realize and 2K wants something to fill the gap, like what WB did with Akham Origins.

      ugh… AO…

        Bat bacon.

  • Zackasaur

    Last gen? Hahaha, no.

  • Kobracon

Ooh cool. Looking forward to the ironic wub wub trailer!

Not keen on Gearbox and the whole Aliens fiasco but I do love me some Borderlands. Platinum’d both games pre-patch. I still need to get to the DLC on BL2.

  • LordKaiser

I don’t trust Gearbox anymore as their ethics are now questionable. It is said around the web that instead of using SEGAs money to develop Colonial Marines as they should, they use most of the money to develop Boderlands 2 and legally stealing SEGA’s money along the way.

    • Kobracon

Thats hilariously awesome. I am glad they did that. BL2 was awesome
