Censors don't understand meaning behind the scene, Kojima says.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

The Japanese version of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will be censored, according to a report from French games site JeuxVideo.

The censored scene is described as a ‘gory and painful’ sequence involving Paz, suggesting it might be the surgery scene we saw in the Red Band trailer.

Series creator Hideo Kojima seems to be upset about this, citing that Japanese censors didn’t understand the meaning behind the violent scene, which is said to be particularly reminiscent of Metal Gear Solid 3.

Thanks, Metal Gear Informer.

dont surprised, japan cero rating is too strict.

    • kurosan9712

At least they don’t censor nudity in pretty much all cases you can find in video games. Violence SHOULD be censored anyways. Nudity should not be.

      • Lalum

        Nothing should be censored.

        • Pyrofrost

          Thank you Lalum.

An artist should be able to express themselves fully and freely, to their hearts content, regardless of the content, regardless of how offensive it is. Any and all things should be permitted in art.

It is a parents job to be a parent, and it’s a buyers job to decide what he or she should purchase for themselves or for someone else (ie: a gift). The “big brother” lording over us isn’t necessary.

  • Dokuro

Wich mean we are gonna get it censored here too…

    • Hatsuaki

The original source says EU and NA remain uncensored, so there’s still hope.

    • Solomon_Kano

Probably not. CERO censors a lot of things that the ESRB and PEGI don’t when it comes to violence. Unless Kojima makes Manhunt 3, I wouldn’t expect to see MGSV censored in the US or Europe. Australians probably have cause to worry though.

    • César H. Sandoval

Nah, Metal Gear games get censored in Japan all the time while they leave them uncensored here.

Peace Walker, MGS4, and even Rising were censored there while staying clear of censors here.

      • PrinceHeir

        MGS4 IS not censored.

Rising’s censorship(if you can call it that) is just the replacement of red blood to white which makes much more sense considering the game where humans had their body genetically modified and powered with Nanomachines.

The reason why they censored Peace Walker is because they wanted to keep the Cero C rating.

If the torture scene would be intact, it would have been changed to Cero D, and since he wanted everyone who had a PSP in Japan to play the game(especially the time where the handheld is getting a lot of games) he had no choice but to censor it.

He mentioned this in an interview and was posted on andriasang back then.

        • César H. Sandoval

Granted, I may be wrong about MGS4 (that game was ages ago) But even if it “Makes Sense” to you personally or not, Rising WAS censored as Peace Walker did too, the official stance on the color of the blood is censoring it as we all know from the mouth of Kojima and Konami, not to mention the fact that MGR codecs confirm that White Blood is now outated Cyborg tech, and that’s why by Rising’s timeframe neither Raiden nor the PMC soldiers use it anymore.

But as I said earlier, just because MMGR and PW got some of their content replaced for more kid-friendly stuff, that doesn’t mean GZ is gonna be censored in America as it is in Japan, because past games only got censored there as well.

          • PrinceHeir

Uh no, Kojima already said the west love blood that’s why the made the blood in rising red as oppose to white. Why do you think when Raiden absorbs the enemies batteries, the color of the splash is still white in all versions of the game??

I don’t think that’s censorship. Censorship is where you actually removed a scene, censored the dialogue or altered it the scene as with Peace Walker in Japan.

Only the torture scene in Japan where they made the lightning rods “laughing rods” was censored. The rest of the scene is pretty much the same in all versions.

and lol if you call that kid friendly then i don’t know what to say to you when they butchered Bravely Default, Persona 2, Soul Sacrifice(Arthurian themes, names got ENTIRELY replaced)

            • César H. Sandoval

Raiden absorbs de electrolites from the spine battery unit, not their blood, he’s not Dracula lol, there’s no reason the 2 liquids should have the same color, and their energy splash after he destroys the units is neon blue like the “Gatorade-like” spines, not white… wich is why it looks the same even after killing The non-humanoid machines like the GRADs and Zan-Datsuing them.

Censor goes a long way, they censored Johny’s bare ass in the JP version by giving him boxers instead of the pixelated distortion of the US-MGS, they make Snake laugh instead of scream in PW’s torture and they even call the Cigs “Foggers: a device that emits smoke” in Ghost Babel’s for the GBC… Changing a Blood color just to make it seem less gory is and old trick, you can see it in PG rated SciFi movies with get away with violent scenes if they only involve machines a lot, the Megaman Zero games got the blood cut out because of censorship too, but that was in America instead of japan, removing a little detail can go a long way for a Censor to be happy with a game’s rating.

Konami and everyone involved in making the game state that it was Censorship, saying that is not is pure fandom speculation.

          • Dick Mountainjoy

Rising wasn’t “Censored”, The US just got bonus gore, like Ken’s Rage.

            • César H. Sandoval

Remember, the American version was released first, the JP version thus got the “violent” red blood removed after we got it.

Also, white blood was outdated by 2018 for use of military cyborgs, as the Doktor explains to Raiden via codec in MGR, the majority of countries got red on tehire release and only a couple got white blood, the color change is censorship and doesnt have an in-universe basis.

Konami and everyone involved in making the game state that it was Censorship, saying that is not is pure fandom speculation.

              • Dick Mountainjoy

That’s not really true, that dialog is for the american version.

The blood is white in the original JP version also so it can make the Sam reveal more dramatic. It makes a lot less sense in the US version.

                • César H. Sandoval

So, it’s fake censoring just because You want the Sam fight to be more dramatic, instead of the official stances of the game’s lore and creators, and the fact that only Japan and Germany got white instead of red out of the whole world were MGR got released.

                  Sounds legit.

                  • Dick Mountainjoy

It’s not fake, it doesn’t make any sense that he can immediately figure out he’s human.

The reason Raiden reacts the way he does is because he isn’t bleeding white like cyborgs do, but real blood.

In the us version he just seems like a psychic.

                    • César H. Sandoval

He cut the guy open, I’m sure Raiden has slashed enough of both cyborgs and humans to figure out with a look if Sam’s guts were real or artificial, him being “Jack the Ripper”, a skilled murderer, since he was a child soldier and all…

                    • Dick Mountainjoy

He didn’t cut him open though, he just stabbed him.

    • 罪罰

hurr durr mgs have always been censored in nihon and uncensored in others

      • Dokuro

oh thank you for your confirmation that this game is not gonna be censored overseas…HURRRRRR DURRRRR -_- you sure work at Konami…

    • Keegs79

We don’t get violence censored, we get panty shots, cleavage, and such censored.

      • Dokuro

And thats stupid but yeah, thats true.

  • Budgiecat

    nyaa nyaa

  • Bob Obb

God fucking damn it. I was planning on skipping the US version entirely

    • Budgiecat

      nyaa nyaa

  • PrinceHeir

That sucks, same thing happened with The Last of US.

Still gonna buy the JPN version, but will also buy the US for comparison.

    Freaking disappointing.

Funny how we still have movies from Japan like Ichi The Killer where you have decapitations, full nudity of real life people yet it gets uncensored while games don’t get away with it.

They’re also the only country that has Kill Bill Vol 1 full colored/uncensored version.

    • Dick Mountainjoy

Ichi the Killer isn’t a mainstream franchise.

Kojima is choosing a bigger market with a lower rating over a Z rating

  • Dick Mountainjoy

I’m pretty sure they understand what you are going for perfectly, Kojima’s been gassing about how edgy and violent the game will be since it was announced, so I seriously doubt there is any artistic merit to it, it sounds like pure exploration.

And I don’t buy the “Horror of War” from the guy who made “pants shitting guard” a major character.

    • DrForbidden

Why, because nobody has ever shit their pants in a war?

Seriously though, you are implying that we can’t have both comedy/parody and horror in one game or franchise, which is blatantly untrue.

Frankly, I think this news is just a publicity stunt, but that does not mean that the particular scene is unimportant to the overall narrative, whether or not it is exploratory or ‘artistic’.

      • Dick Mountainjoy

It’s not like Otacon who pisses himself when a robot ninja slaughters a room full of guards.

The pants shitting joke goes on 4 games straight, and he is shitting the entire emotional scene where Meryl and Snake reunite.

It’s a joke that wasn’t that funny the first time, forced on us for nearly a decade.

        • DrForbidden

True, but you can also have bad jokes existing in tandem with serious issues, especially in such a long-running franchise.

          • Dick Mountainjoy

I find it really jarring, especially like shit when Boss’s scar floats away.

            • DrForbidden

Well, I can’t argue with that, since it’s your valid opinion and all. :)

What actually bugs me the most about the franchise is the product placement Kojima is so fond of.

              • Dick Mountainjoy

                That depends on context.

If it feels natural to the world, Like Yakuza it’s fine. Or if Snake smoked a real brand of cigs.

But when you have stuff like Doritios and Axespray as power ups in some versions of Peace Walker, it’s kinda just sad.

  • Dick Mountainjoy

Censored is Misleading, Kojima is choosing to cut content over taking a Z rating.

  • Kobracon

    Meh. Not surprised.
