JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle will launch for PlayStation 3 in North America on April 29, Namco Bandai announced.

An April 25 European release date was previously announced.

The game will be available digitally through the PlayStation Store, and see a limited retail release at and

North American consumers who pre-order their copy will receive a free downloadable character depending on retailer:

  • Club Namco – Yoshikage Kira (Chapter 4 – Diamond is Unbreakable): Originally a salesman aspiring for a quiet life, Kira is full of contradictions and madness. Why would a man seeking discretion wear a purple suit? Why would a man seeking discretion be a serial-killer for years? Lot of questions remains unanswered around this scary man and his terrifying stand: Deadly Queen…
  • Amazon – Shigekiyo Yangu (Chapter 4 – Diamond is Unbreakable): Nicknamed “Shigechi”, like a characters of characters in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, he appears to be full of paradoxes.

Fucking retailer exclusive DLC characters. What is WRONG with you Bamco?

For one those characters are already out and completely finished. Two, the audience for JoJo’s isn’t like Naruto and all those other anime/manga based games so you’re already going to lose money off of a lack of popularity AND it’s a limited physical release at specific online retailers. Only a handful of people are going to buy these extra characters. Plus you advertised it on your site as having 41 characters. You didn’t say anything about DLC.

It’s like they want the game to just fail here and not only that but fail to learn of their past transgressions. No mention of Campaign mode being tweaked or fixed.

    • tokyobassist

Sorry for the long winded blow up but this is just ridiculous to me after all the negativity they got from importers and the Japanese audience for their handling of Campaign mode and made no attempts to fix the problem, only put a bandage on it. It’s still an extremely tedious form of unlocking new content.

      • Budgiecat

actually they’re tweaking campaign mode by reducing the battery to 2 minutes and adding an arcade mode. Universal drop probably on the date of the U.S. release and the Japanese version will be patched and you can play worldwide with the Japanese version owners..

Thanks for bringing awareness to this update. It’s good to know. 2 minutes sounds kind of pointless though considering most matches will be done by the time it recharges.

I’m not a fan either. I can tell you why you see this type of stuff, the retailer exclusive content, like characters, spread out to various retailers.

In order to get retailers to buy a product in bulk, companies offer exclusive deals to get the retailers to more or less agree to the terms they prefer.

If they want Amazon to buy some much of the game in bulk, perhaps amazon won’t do it without something like exclusive DLC. Why? Amazon wants to sell the stock they buy, so, adding something exclusive that customers can only get from them, it makes the deal work for both sides.

Then, the company, studio, whatever you want to call it. In this case — Namco Bandai. They might announce so and so copies have been shipped out in a press release, etc.

This type of retailer exclusive content has been around for years. Before we had DLC, it was typically physical stuff like posters, soundtracks, cards, etc. (It still is sometimes.)

It’s part of the business I guess you could say. It doesn’t always work out, or help a product (game) sell any better. It’s just a fairly common practice.

Don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean I’m a fan of this practice. I just understand it.

I’d also like to add. We are starting to see more game companies cut out the retailer and sell products (like games) via an official online store.

It’s different from retailers because by cutting out the middle man, the profit (typically) all goes right back to the company. In this case, Namco Bandai.

It’s similar in regards to adding some kind of exclusive content to bring in customers. What can we do to sweeten the pot? Bring more customers to our online store, so they will buy directly from us? How about exclusive DLC? Or, like I said above, a special edition with physical content etc.

You might know most of this. I just felt like it was worth posting. I sure hope the game does well. I know Namco Bandai can be really stupid when it comes to marketing though. =(

First off, I just want to let you know I actually did read all of that. Secondly, thanks for educating me on the subject and third, I didn’t expect such an insight response.

I just find it odd that they didn’t include the DLC characters from the get go considering they (Bamco) advertised the game as including 41 playable characters. The retailer exclusive thing just baffles me because unlike back in the day, we’re now deciding which portion of the game we want instead of choosing between say a “Artbook/Poster” or a “Soundtrack/T-Shirt” for example. This is whole new ballpark and it kind of sucks lol.

I’m aware of how things are. I just don’t like it and I really REALLY want all of us to stop bickering about fickle nonsense and focus on fighting for better games. I imported this game a while back last year but it frustrates me how they are going about this game for Western releases.

Thanks for reading. I agree, I really find myself missing how things used to be. How games were sold in the past, and how bonus content was treated, etc.

When they first announced DLC… I never imagined it would become what it has today. I suppose everyone should have.

They basically just took the micro transactions and lock out features from social games, facebook games, etc. They took that formula and applied it to all of the video game market.

It’s all about making money. It does really bother me at times.

          • tokyobassist

Yeah it’s pretty sad for many reasons. I mean social gaming as always existed. I remember my buddy showed me Asheron’s Call way back when Everquest was popular and Microsoft actually had competitive and monetary drive. The title was free to play but microtransactions allowed players who wanted more out of the game to do so with continued respect towards game balance.

And browser based games are on and off fads in the West unlike Japan. Every here and there Angry Birds, Flappy Bird, etc (wow…why are birds successful lol?). Applying that logic towards legitimate gaming for lack of better words and forgoing snobbery is bound to not only make those who support it angry but eventually lead to failure. Heck we’ve seen TONS of studios shut down (THQ, Free Radical, Clover Studios, Zipper, Irrational Games, etc.) going into this gen, during this gen and before next gen even started. The signs are all there for a need to fix things before it gets worse but gamers and publishers alike are too stubborn to change anything.

  • Sevyne

Alright, retailer exclusive characters is going WAY too far. That’s fn’ ridiculous. Equipment and costumes is already bad enough in some games.

  • PrinceHeir

Why the hell is Kira exclusive? and Bandai Namco store of ALL places?!?!?!

They should have at least traded with Amazon.

I do hope they’ll offer this as DLC in a few days.

Though this could have been avoided if they have put all the DLCs in the game as compensation for bringing it almost 8 months now.

Same thing happened to Tales of XIllia, didn’t put ANY DLC’s watsoever.

Namco US/EU are such greedy bastards.

    • tokyobassist

The thing is even if they do release a character bundle pack. it becomes null the moment you redeem your free character.

These characters better be $2 or something. I thought it was absurd that they charged close to 600 Yen for a single character. That’s getting deathly close to Arcsys levels of inflated.

    • TheGameTagerZ

I’m sure they’ll put them on PSN later on. But if you want one of them for free then you choose either or.

  • Zancrow

“Deadly Queen”? Typo or were they forced to change it in America?

  • Sae-Won Yoon

……Iggy, Old Joesph, and Suzi’s gonna get similar treatment, aren’t they?

    • PrinceHeir

  • Hol Horse

    Deadly Queen???? WHAT THE FUCKHELL????

  • Ace

  • ShadowFang

I wish Square-Enix would’ve handled Drakengard 3’s rollout like this; digital release guaranteed, limited physical release through AMAZON and then – last resort option – their own store. Stupid Squeenix; their handling of D3 in North America pisses me off. Namco’s handling of JoJo here – retailer exclusive bonus notwithstanding – is MUCH more fair.
