'Hundreds' of layoffs planned, despite Disney Infinity successs.

Disney Infinity

Disney Interactive are readying Star Wars and Marvel versions of its Infinity franchise that began with Disney Infinity, according to Wall Street Journal source.

Additionally, people “close to the company” have told the outlet that Disney Interactive, which currently employs 3,000, is preparing to lay off several hundred people despite a strong launch for Disney Infinity. They’re expected to begin after the company releases its quarterly financial results on Wednesday.

Wait. So instead of having a massive game where all three properties interact, they’re making three separate franchises?

That just seems like a bad idea.

I thought the same thing at first, as it might make it difficult for these games to coexist…

But there is a grander picture here. Disney want to keep these brands isolated from one another, and making games which mix them together does not accomplish that goal.

At the same time, the whole point of the Disney one was a super fun crossover. This now seems to entirely miss that point.

Not to mention that now they have to make three games each time they want to update the franchise, assuming they don’t keep making new ones… Which in turn will make all the old figures useless. Part of the reason Skylanders is doing so well is that you can use old figures in new games – it creates a demand for old figures as well as new.

If Disney starts saying that new games will have entirely separate casts, people will be turned off. What’s the point in spending hundreds of dollars on THIS franchise to only use your toys in one game when you could stick with Skylanders and use them forever?

All in all, unless they make a fourth series that allows all the toys, it just seems like an incredibly bad decision all around.
