But alas, it's only a desire.

Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment

Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment producer Futami Takakai wants to make the next Sword Art Online game on PlayStation 4, he’s said.

“If there is going to be another installment of Sword Art Online, I’d like to try and make it for PS4,” Takakai told Dengeki Online. “An original novel set in a next generation network RPG, or more than that, a novel about personal experience or connections—I wonder if such a game could be fun to play… For now look forward to Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment, releasing April 24!”

Of course, it’s only a desire for now. But the prospect is exciting!

Cool. Keep the “novel” elements or whatever and make it an online RPG, then I might give it a shot. Otherwise, it’s just going to be another offline .hack to me (which could be good or bad).

    • Renaldi Saputra

but if they still use Kirito (whatever the customization), it won’t be an Online RPG

      • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Offline mode can use Kirito. Online mode can create your own character for SAO. Simple.

        • Renaldi Saputra

          that would be troublesome
you still can’t be a female

          • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Troublesome? Ummm… Not really. Just keep the story mode stuff for offline and create your own character for online. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time an online RPG has done that before :p

            • Renaldi Saputra

still, it would be troublesome with many aspects for me..
and you can’t log out :p

              • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Not you’re just being crazy, lol. You couldn’t log out in .hack either, but you could still quit the games whenever you wanted, silly. Again, not difficult to implement.

Phantasy Star Online did it, so did Phantasy Star Universe.

                • Renaldi Saputra

                  .hack is an offline game

                  • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

.hack is actually an online game, but the video games were offline, yes. Well, except for .hack//Fragment which was online and offline, but we try to forget that one. You’re making this way too complicated, man.

I was just saying you couldn’t log out of .hack in the manga/anime/etc., not the video game >_<

    • Kattaro

MMO in SAO universe would be awesome. Aincrad castle form 1st floor to 100th :D

      • Renaldi Saputra

IIRC Reki had said he doesn’t want his series to be made a real MMO game

        • Kattaro

I see. Well in this case it can’t be helped. There may always be game from Log Horizon. But this series is not as popular as SAO…

          • Shippoyasha

Log Horizon has a chance to be popular since it is nationally syndicated with tax yen. I hope Toonami picks it up after SAO ends and raise its profile in America.

            • Kattaro

I hope so. I think anime is really amazing and adaption is very good. I do like SAO especially light novel but I think anime adpation of Log Horizon is just more interesting than adaption of Sword Art Online. But this is only my opinion.

        • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

God forbid you should make an MMO out of a game based on an MMO and make money out of it.

        • DyLaN

Its said in a joking manner. But it is true tht they have no plan for one atm.

  • Renaldi Saputra

    that seems too ambitious

  • icecoffemix

    Do eeeeet!

But make sure you localize that one.

    • https://twitter.com/RyoonZ RyoonZ

They will… in Chinese though, LOL.

      • icecoffemix

Yeah, might as well learning JP instead.

  • http://fr.twitch.tv/Nhatalya Aleksandrina

    Now they’ve to do it.

  • https://twitter.com/RyoonZ RyoonZ

I don’t particularly like the anime but the Vita game looks fun, definitely getting since it’ll be released simultaneously in Chinese along with Japanese release.

An original story set in SAO universe could be interesting and never say no to more JRPG.

  • underoath4u

Well first off… We need a localization of both the psp and vita game. As a either a ps3 HD remaster or ps4 would be plenty sufficient. Especially since a ps4 game is what they look to make in the near future. I personally would love to see the SAO universe on my home consoles, handheld or home.

    • DyLaN

HF will do since it contains IM in it as well. (or so the interview I saw says)

  • Kayseur

Next stage: Oculus Rift SAO game. It could even use the PS4 hardware to do it.

I don’t particularly mind if they want to do it on PS4 anyway, and I’m actually glad we’re already seeing interest in anime games on this new console. That’s what would get me to buy one.

    • Renaldi Saputra

it’s just an ambition and early planning..
there’s been gundam and idolmaster too which share the same ambition

    • Kattaro

Then they should make a game using Alfheim Online instead Aincrad world, you know flying and fighting in air.

      • DyLaN

        What abt T/FPS GGO?

        • Kattaro

I said that they should use Alfheim Online because I thought about PS4 and Oculus Rift. You know thanks to it, it’s possible to feel like you are really flying if they use first person perspective and I think it would be something amazing.
In my opinion GGO version would end up as a simple FPS and unfortunately there’s a lot of games like that.

    • jujubee88

Sony are making their own “Oculus Rift” (aka VR headset). They can just use that.

      • Kayseur

Sony’s headset is far from a VR headset apparently. It’s a “cinema VR” but not something immersive like the OR.

        • icecoffemix
          • Kayseur

So, that’s different from the Sony HMZ-T3W? That’s the only one I was aware of. Well then, if they’re truly working on one, nice.

            • icecoffemix

FOV, head tracking, 3D, refresh rate. And people will probably won’t ever understand until they tried it themselves but you can read many impression about Oculus Rift.

  • Wolf Star

They really should do it!! :)

  • Gariya

I know this sounds weird, but if they want to make a PS4 SAO game, please don’t make it online-only.

    • Sabin Snake

what do you mean don’t make it online only? it was an online only game on the anime, so why should they make it a single player game?

  • 罪罰

Since it’s airing in Toonami in Americuh, the possibility.

  • artemisthemp

Let them make it and release it in the west

  • bloodiOS

  • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

I may get the PS4 version, can’t stand these throwback PSP graphics

    • Budgiecat

And watch it still look like a PSP game on the PS4…

I swear….its gonna like take another 20 years before Japan finally gets out of the PS2 design mindset…

      • Renaldi Saputra

well, that’s only ambition after all
and SAO is still new to gaming world

        • Guest

oh.. you’re the guy who hating Bandai Namco for not translating their stuff. go enjoy your hate pffft.. i don’t care, i can read japanese LOL

          • Renaldi Saputra

well I also can read japanese, but for japanese 3DS games I have no idea what to do

      • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

I’m starting to think it’s going to take 20 years to get out of your current mindset.

      • Oscar Alberto Abrego Suarez

Meh im happy they still look like PS 2 games, the most realistic as JRPG looks the most boring it looks.

Besides budgets would make JRPGs go to the safe side of things.

  • Eliseo Rocha

Or they can, you know, release this game to the West first. As much as I’d love to learn Japanese and import these games I just don’t have the recources for it.

  • Zukato

    To the future!

  • Leo Haanpää

Why not make it to PC too? :/

  • https://www.youtube.com/user/SWEabridged アブリッジド キリト (Abridged Kirito)

You know how awesome this would be if it was compatible with Project Morpheus.

  • Christian Bradley

Let’s just hope that it doesn’t turn out like every other anime game for consoles… Just a crappy fighting game that feels like a Dynasty Warriors clone.
