Sonic and friends get a face-lift for 2014.

Sonic Boom

Sega announced Sonic Boom—”a new branch” of the Sonic the Hedgehog universe consisting of video games, a CG animated television series, and line of toys—during a press event in New York City today.

The sub-series gives the entire Sonic gang a makeover. Tails is sporting goggles, a wrench, and a handy toolbag; Knuckles has been going to the gym; Sonic has a scarf; and Amy is downright seductive (in one shot, at least).

The Sonic Boom video game is coming to Wii U and 3DS as the third game part of Nintendo’s exclusive Sonic deal. Big Red Button Entertainment, formed in 2008 by two ex-Naughty Dog employees, is handling the Wii U version and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time developer Sanzaru Games is doing the 3DS version. Both are being developed in collaboration with Sonic Team.

Sonic Boom will offer a “totally different” experience than previous games. It will have the traditional elements of previous Sonic games, like speed, but add add exploration, combat, and a new “Enerbeam tether” mechanic that ‘allows the world to be discovered in totally unique ways.’

The television series, co-produced by Sega of America and OuiDO! Productions, will debut on Cartoon Network in the United States, and on Canal J and Gulli in France during the winter 2014 / 2015 season. It is an “ensemble comedy” consisting of 52 x 11-minute standalone episodes, each starting from a small character-driven story to “an epic tale of saving the world, robot battles, and more.”

Finally, the Sonic Boom toy line will be handled by TOMY. It will “showcase the new character looks, stressing interaction between core characters, and will feature new play patterns based on both the new game and TV series.” Its range includes plush toys, action figures, RC, role play, vehicles, and novelty.

“We want to ensure that the Sonic brand continues to evolve and appeal to new generations of Sonic fans and this different look introduces a fresh approach that will be at once both familiar and new to consumers,” said Sega of America president and COO John Cheng. “We are committed to supporting this initiative to provide great entertainment to fans for all aspects of their lives.”

  • True Gamer

Damn these visuals are crazy. But be real lol, Knuckles looking like he bench 450 in this game lol

  • http://shinsua.tumblr.com/ Shinsua

    Multiple jokes.

    • vileBrenman

Haha wow the new sonic designs do Look like the crash bandicoot characters

      • http://shinsua.tumblr.com/ Shinsua

To what I hear, a decent number of the people making the Sonic Boom game are old Naughty Dog crew.

        • Alkhan

Only 2 of them are ex Naughty Dog.

          • http://shinsua.tumblr.com/ Shinsua

Ah, well… two, then. If I recall correctly, there was a notable someone working on the game as well. I want to say it was Chris Senn, who worked on Sonic X-treme.

  • AdamBoy64

Yeah, I’m in. It’s looking good.

Seems like it’ll be quite a wait ahead for the game, so I think I might try out Sonic & All-Stars Racing in the meantime. It’s been quite while since I’ve played a good arcade racing game.

Here’s hoping we get some more info on the game soon.

  • Alkhan

lol Nathan Drake? Is that you? Take off that Sonic costume, you look ridiculous.

  • Invisbin

Do want. Both game and show.

  • Miyako Arima

graphics look amazing, and that movie trailer-like trailer.

    dem character models doe.

  • SuperLuigi

I’m digging everything about this sides knuckles character model. I can get used to it though.

  • Wolf Star

Everything is good except knuckles.. that kinda ruined it for me.

  • Syltique

I’m actually kind of totally sold on the show. Game looks great too. I’m looking forward to something different, and the swinging mechanics sound interesting.

  • Ace

I hope they put Guile in this game.

    I’ll just leave this here.

    • Elvick

      Whoever made this… <3

  • Kobracon

I…I swear I though this was a Sonic x Street Fighter mash up. Knuckles and Ken doing Shoryukens all day.

  • Anime10121

Well at least it looks FAR more promising than Lost Worlds did initially, though I need to see more before I’m sold on it…

That being said, I’m LOVING Sonic’s redesigned look, as he looks more like a natural evolution of the one from the Sega genesis than the Sonic that arrived with the start of the Dreamcast era. As for the rest of the characters… I’ll have to learn to like em, but I’m loving Sonics new look.

Oh and one more thing, what’s up with the guys and all the bandages :P

  • http://www.cubiz.tk/ Auragar

No… do not want. Sorry but no.

  • Elvick

I think the game looks pretty lame personally. Not visually (at least the environments :P) but it just… doesn’t look fun so far.

I had the same issue with early Lost World footage too.

Can’t wait for Sega to get back to making multiplat Sonic.

The show looks better, but still not great. In particular the running… but the running is something that Sega has had a lot of issues with making look right.

This had better animation than the show… (and so did, imo recent game cutscenes)

Skeptical, very skeptical. Want to see more to judge

  • Elvick

    IGN posted an update;

“Update: Sonic Boom will not be released
in Japan, and the Japanese Sonic Team are working on titles in parallel
    with the new western developers.”

    more; http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/02/07/sega-announces-sonic-boom-new-game-tv-show-and-toys

Current gen (PS4/Xbone) Sonic confirmed basically. :P

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

      >Next gen

Sure wish people would stop doing that =3=

      • Elvick

        But I edited it within a minute… :

        • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Lies. I replied 5 minutes later and it still said ‘Next’, lol. Maybe Disqus goofed :p

Either way, it’s always funny when people call current gen next gen.

          • Elvick

I did, but disqus sucks so… we’ll just blame them.

It’s a fairly recent change, so it’s hard to get used to.

    • Anime10121

Wow… Dont know how I feel about that (it not releasing in Japan), low confidence in delivery of a good product? I’m still gonna keep my eye on it, cuz so far, it looks pretty good, but I’ll be damned if that isn’t a bad sign :(

But then again… Sonic Team developed Lost Worlds, so…

Man I’ve gotta stop ragging on that game until I play the full game, but the demo just sucked so bad to me :(

      • Elvick

Well, maybe that’ll change? Who knows. Probably has more to do with all the cross promotion they have going on with Sonic Boom in the west.

Doesn’t Sonic not usually do well over there anyway? If I recall, Lost World didn’t really do well there (not that it did great worldwide either).

As long as Sonic Team once again go back to what works, rather than saying “Let’s change it, because reasons”. They should be fine in their next game. And I’ve yet to fully judge Lost World. It’ll probably be the first ‘third’ (second really) party game I get for Wii U.

        • Anime10121

Welp, at the least it looks better than Lost Worlds, so I may get it, I just need to see a little bit more before I decide on it.

          • Elvick

I’ll probably get it. I typically give every Sonic game a shot. I missed most of the early multiplatform stuff though and have yet to track them down to buy and play.

But I’ve given the Wii games a go despite the problems. Even gave Sonic ’06 a try. (ugg…)

This won’t be anywhere near that bad. I don’t think anything in the series will ever be as bad as Sonic ’06.

            • Anime10121

I usually do the same with Sonic (getting every game), well at least the “core” games I despised both Secret Rings and Black Sword, I even LIKED 06 and thought it would have been a great game if it actually worked properly :/

Sonic Lost Worlds is the first Sonic I’ve skipped since, well, Sonic CD, and thats only because I never got a Sega CD (bought it with the recent releases though)!

  • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

Is it bad that I kinda like the way this looks?

Also, the company developing the Wii U version was formed by former Naughty Dog employees. Didn’t know that upon posting, but I added it in.

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Maybe a little bit, haha. Just don’t like it too much!

    • Anime10121

I like the way the gameplay looks more than I liked Lost World’s look… But I need to see a bit more before I can get hype :P

  • Zancrow

    More like Sonic boom boom.

  • Sae-Won Yoon

I’m honestly not liking it so much, then again that’s because i’m prob way too in my confort zone and am too used to how Sonic usualle looks, I.e Unleashed Era to Lost World.

  • fireemblembeast

For some reason I keep thinking this is like a “cavemen meet cowboys” sonic…

  • MasterSensei

    Damn right Tails… damn right.

  • SOLOmio

is this a fake video or just some British company destroying/scaring another franchise with their insane ideas?
cause i don’t know and i need answers.
