First look at Square Enix's mobile Mana game.

Rise of Mana

Square Enix has released the first trailer and screenshots for Seiken Densetsu: Rise of Mana, its newly announced Mana game for smartphones.

The 3D action RPG puts players in the body of an angel and demon who, by certain incident, come to occupy the same body. Players will adventure across various fields, battle large enemies, and progress the story to discover why these two have become one, and what to do to get back home to heaven.

Square Enix also announced it will release a Rise of Mana soundtrack featuring Kenji Ito, Hiroki Kikuta, Yoko Shomomura, and Tsuyoshi Sekito for 2,700 yen plus tax. First-print buyers will get an in-game item code for use in Rise of Mana.

Watch the trailer below. (The theme song you’ll hear is “Believe in the Spirit” by Kokia.) View the screenshots at the gallery.

Why can’t they just create new IPs to create shit games on phones with instead of pissing on the legacy of their good ones? >_<

    • Budgiecat

Because people would instantly realize its shit and wouldn’t download it.
This attempt they feel has more of a chance for people to be interested n because of the familiar name….

  • MrRobbyM

It looks like they could easily port the game to the 3DS, possibly a Vita version down the line.

Not port begging, just saying it seems like something they’d do later on.

    • Budgiecat

Thats what I was thinking. Just from the screen capture, it looked like a 3DS game alone…

I’m surprised more of these phone games aren’t showing up on the Vita since that’s all PlayStation Mobile’s library consists of. Cellphone ports.

Forget this i’ll play Secret of Mana & Legend of Mana both games kickass. Oh what am i sayin anything made by Squaresoft back then kicked more ass than today.

    • AdamBoy64

I haven’t played Legend of Mana, though I am a big fan of SoM.
LoM was very different from SoM though, right?

Perhaps I better pick it up – and soon..!

It’s way, way different from SD2 and 3. It wasn’t my cup of tea in any small way, but I know the game has its fans. Be careful! Don’t get your hopes up, just in case you end up on my end of the spectrum.

        • AdamBoy64

Thanks man. It might be impossible, but if I play it, I’ll try not to be constantly comparing it to Secret of Mana. Sounds like it’ll fall well short.

  • Zuhri69

They could’ve release this on 3DS and Vita and I’ll be fine.

    • AdamBoy64

Yeah, you’d think that would need to happen for it to be localised.

I don’t know how many mobile games make it out of Japan – I don’t think it’s many.

  • Anime10121

That… actually doesnt look/sound bad, tis unfortunate I’ll never get to play it :(

  • Tetsu

There’s no way in hell my Ipod Touch 4th Gen can play this lol

Damn. I was hoping this would look awful. I expected it to. To my surprise, it actually looks like fun. Considering this is a game I’ll most likely never get to play… This really sucks.

(I’ve always been a big fan of the Mana series, despite some of the games being mediocre, or lacking. I’ve always enjoyed them for my own reasons.)

  • Syltique

This looks fantastic! Wow. They could charge $40 for this on Vita without question. Looks better than a ton of Vita games.

  • echokanon

    I wasn’t really interested, until I saw Li’l Cactus…

    telephone games = nothx.

  • fallen

I’m f*cking done. A new Seiken Densetsu with Hiroki Kikuta involvement for the first time since 1996, and it’s a f*cking mobile game. So help me god, if they DARE arrange “Angel’s Fear”…

Since last year, square enix experienced huge losses. Ever since the new president, Yosuke Matsuda took over, he’s been trying to fix the company by creating a plan to bring in more income. Thats why games like FF 15 and kingdom hearts 3 are multiplatform now, which should have been exclusive. Also explains why he placed a classic game like dragon quest 8 on mobile devices, and now rise of mana. Mobile game market is big in japan, thats where the moneys at. It seems the company as a whole is all about there paper$$$ now, which I’m not even mad at, but its just that the quality of there games drop, when they execute plans like this. Its just sad now.

    Fan of Mana Series >..<

  • Elvick

Doesn’t look bad, but sheesh why mobile? I really can’t play games like this on a touch screen, and I’ve tried with some indie action RPGs. (and I feel like a controller + mobile is kind of defeating the purpose of mobile)

I have to say Rise Of Mana looks very good for a game on mobile devices. I like the angel/devil character switching in the midst of attacking. But will we be seeing a bunch of toxic mobile design ruining the experience?
