Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is two hours long

Kojima's prologue to The Phantom Pain is super short.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes‘ main mission can be completed in under two hours, the March issue of Game Informer’s cover story on the game reveals.

“Judged just by the core story mission, Ground Zeroes is short,” Game Informer writes. “We completed it in just less than two hours.”

This, of course, is excluding side missions or the console-exclusive classic Snake (PlayStation) and Raiden (Xbox) missions.

Ground Zeroes, due out on March 18 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, is a prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It will cost $30 on current-gen consoles and $40 on next-gen consoles.

For the full scoop on Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, check out Game Informer’s March cover story.

Thanks, Kotaku.

  • DarthBrian

And they want $40 for this.

    • Sevyne

Know what’s really sad? It’ll sell well because people are morons. Look at Angry Birds on consoles. People spending $40-60 on a $0.99 (or free) phone game port.

      • Budgiecat

        that is really ridiculous

  • poopstorm

It’s longer than I expected. At least Dark Souls 2 is coming out before so I can play something.

    • Ash_Riot

You expected it to be 10 minutes, or something?

      • poopstorm

It’s not like they didn’t say it would be short. I was expecting one mission, so about 40 minutes. They already said this would be a short part of the game, because PP would take a long time to finish, so it’s just a chance to try the Fox Engine. It’s a bit overpriced, but everyone’s exagerating.

        • Budgiecat

Pretty sure I’ve played some PSN demos that were longer than 2 hours…

          • poopstorm

I have played a lot of demos and the maximum they last is a little over an hour.

            • Budgiecat

You didn’t play Tears to Tiara 2 demo. Or Dissidia 012 Prologue. Or FF Type Zero demo…

              • poopstorm

No I didn’t. And none of those is for PS3, and even then, it’s the smaller part of them.

                • Budgiecat

All three were on PSN wtf are you talking about. Tears to Tiara 2 is a PS3 game…
Also XBlaze, Time Leap, Darksiders and Dunamis15…

  • Solomon_Kano

  • MrRobbyM

    This is pathetic.

  • David Vileta

The idea was that this would be the implementation of Kojima’s “pilot” idea for games. I think it’s a great idea, and I enjoy shorter games these days as I get older, but $40 is too much IMO, even for this kind of AAA quality. I don’t see the value.

  • surakian

Haha, no thanks Kojima I’m cool.

  • True Gamer

Wow. Well i’ll just wait till the phantom pain then. Couldn’t get Metal Gear, Infamous, and Dark Souls 2 all at the same time anyway.

  • Nice Boat
  • Dark_N11

    No Thanks.

  • karmacoma

I’ll wait for MGSV Groundsistence or whatever that includes both parts on one disc.

  • $18114340

  • bloodiOS

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I will only buy it once the game is bundled with The Phantom Pain to form a whole package. If that doesn’t happen, I’ll just wait for both to go on sales, until the combination of both would come out equal to the price of one full-price game, and get them then instead. Charging $40 for this…

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

After reading about how you can beat MGSV in 2 hours is seriously pathetic. I don’t like to complain but as a Metal Gear i’m saying F**k this.
I’ll enjoy “The Witch & The Hundred Knights” Blazblue Chrono Phantasma, and Dark Souls II instead. Heck even Tales of Xillia 2 is one of my most anticipated games and i’m looking forward to that more than this cheap game.

2 hours for a $30 game on current gen. consoles, and $40 is a serious slap in the face to longtime fans like me. I don’t like to bitch but the only thing this short game has going for it is the graphics and new gameplay. But graphics alone don’t convince me into buying a game it’s the Gameplay and whether or not the game is going to be work my Cash spent. This is not worth the MSRP. Forget it.

Furthermore before I forget I was there waiting at Gamestop anticipating picking up my copy of MGS4 Limited Edition and that game was worth it. It had great multiplayer, and loads of replay value. Not to mention I beat MGS4 3 times back then.

    • Lynx

      This isn’t MGSV though.
This is the prologue to MGSV.
      Think the Tanker Mission.

      It’s still low though.

  • Alkhan

    HELL NO!

  • icecoffemix

Only you can save Phantom Pain guys.

  • Gigus

I’m kinda curious if game informer is writing this just for publicity since their magazine writing ain’t the best in gaming news. If it is true, I’m a bit disappointed in kojima. This is worse than his extremely long cut scenes in previous games.

    • $18114340

I am concerned about the game’s length, but at the same time I do think the way Game Informer wrote that, and the way people are interpreting it, is a little off. Skipping cutscenes, the original MGS and MGS2 in their entirety were pretty short, too. The thing is, we have no way of knowing just how Game Informer played through the game, how much optional content is there, and such. I also think the price point and the fact that this is eventually going to be part of a larger game are exacerbating the problem — nobody would have bought Metal Gear Solid 2 at that price if it was just the Tanker chapter and they knew beforehand that the Plant chapter would be released later at full price too.

  • Yuri Meitzen

I see… So the game has like 2 missions, the second being that exclusive DLC thingy…

    WTF IS THIS SHIT!!!!!!??

  • MrFinalgamer

so if thi is 2 hours long, why didn’t they justinclude it when MGS V releases? ridiculous

    • Impressionnant

They most likely will. I’m pretty sure the mgs3 demo was the whole virtuous mission. They ended up including that in the final game. The difference here is that they’re charging 30 bucks for their demo.

  • badmoogle

If a 2 hour game equates to 40$ (for Konami) then how much MGSV will cost?120$?

    • Auragar

Nah that is too cheap. $500+

    • icecoffemix

Kojima said it’s hundreds time bigger so… $8000?

  • Kougeru

Okay, I take back what I said on the previous post. This game is DEFINITELY NOT worth the price. Yada yada quality over quantity, there’s dozens of high quality games out there for less. I also don’t see a valid reason why it’s 10 dollars more on next-gen consoles when other companies charge the same for all versions of their games. Then again, for some reason Digital copies of a lot of games cost more than physical….The industry is so broken in this regard.

  • LordKaiser

LOL I can wait to see the reaction on youtube celebrities.

This is Fail! If the new gen is like this then fk it. I’ll stay with last gen forever.

    • DarthNemesis

Notice this happens when he works with MS.

  • TreizeX

Like hell I’m going to pay $40 for a 2 hour game

  • Heisst

5 mins long if you’re good enough.

    • bloodiOS

Kojima notes that the MGS V looks slightly better on the PS4 compared to the Xbox One, something we also noted before he mentioned it.

Should they really be saying that?

      • Chestnut Bowl

They can say that because they know it won’t effect sales at all.

    • Dick Mountainjoy

Holy shit I thought you were kidding.

    • icecoffemix

      Damn, lol

  • Anime10121

I Take back what I said in the previous article because, well, damn, now I feel like shit :(

I bought my PS4 early SPECIFICALLY to get the best MGSV: GZ experience…but they’re REALLY trying to charge $40 for a 2 hour main story?!

I was understanding at 4, but 2 HOURS?! Thats freking pitiful. I cant believe I’m saying this…but I think I might actually cancel my preorder and wait for a price drop on one of my favorite series D:

    • badmoogle

I hope people will give a loud and clear message to Konami and not buy this thing.
Otherwise if it becomes successful more publishers will try this experiment.

    • bloodiOS

Well, they probably just did a quick run in Easy mode. If you decide to immerse yourselves with side missions, watch cutscenes, such and such, it will probably last a fair bit longer. That said, I also don’t feel that it’s worth $40…

      • Anime10121

Thats not even worth $30. If this is what they meant by giving us a “piece” of MGSV to hold us over until TPP came out, I’d had rather them just kept us waiting and included them both together like they’ve BEEN doing for the last few MGSs. :(

    • Solomon_Kano

      > I bought my PS4 early SPECIFICALLY to get the best MGSV: GZ experience

You know we’re cool, man, but I cracked up. So hard. This is the kind of genuine disappointment that you just can’t make up.

      • Anime10121

I know man, I laughed so hard when I saw this story I nearly cried. I mean seriously, wtf were they thinking :/ I mean, I’d be willing to part with $25 at MOST for a 2 hour game (in Japan, its only $30 for the next gen versions), unless those “side missions” add up another 3-4 hours, $40 bucks is ridiculous, open world or not.

  • 罪罰

    why do they even bother

  • new_tradition

    Whoa O_O

  • Samsara09

shit. Now this is new.Well, guess the companies are creative as usual with their unethical tactics.Hope this doesn’t happen again-who the hell am I kidding…?

  • Gariya

PS3 version it is. And after the price drops.

    • Dick Mountainjoy

      Wait for PS+ version.

  • Sevyne

Ha! Nope! Not getting my money. A shame really, because I do love me some Metal Gear. Not THAT much though. I’ll consider it later when the price comes down a lot.

I’m not in much of a rush to play this anyway. Already such a large amount of games coming soon. I think I’ll be fine without this one.

    • DarthNemesis

And it does not look interesting anyway.

  • DarthBrian
    • Sevyne

    • HighBrowDrifter

Lol, the credits are DLC….will cost you $5.

      • Budgiecat

It’ll come with it’s own credit card swipe peripheral…

        • HighBrowDrifter

….which costs $24.99…cables/batteries are not included.

  • Raiyu

    bargain bin price it is

  • 武神水樹

    Should be a free download

  • Syltique

Perfect for the Gone Home crowd. Probably going to be Adam Sessler’s favorite Metal Gear.

    • Smazeli

Hah! I get it! Because that’s the reason people liked Gone Home

  • Chestnut Bowl

I love MGS and am hyped for the next installments, but this just makes want to put off purchasing Ground Zeroes until it’s packed in with Phantom Pain (assuming that happens).

    • Sevyne

My guess is that it will be a digital pack-in with the collector’s edition or something.

      • $18114340

With a GOTY edition six months later that comes with GZ packed-in at a discount. The AAA industry is pretty cynical.

  • TetsuyaHikari

Most expensive demo I’ve paid for.

    • Budgiecat

      Even GT5 prologue was longer

  • poopstorm

It’s not like they hadn’t already said it was a demo for the Fox Engine and that it was sold separately because PP would take a long time to develop and they wanted to give fans an oportunity to play MGSV.

    • Dick Mountainjoy

So you are OK with not only paying upwards of 40 bucks for a demo, but in doing so telling companies that is an OK practice?

      • poopstorm

It’s $30 on PS3, and it’s a one time thing. I wouldn’t do this if I wasn’t a fan, and it’s better than waiting over a year without being able to try the new engine. A demo wouldn’t be released this early, and even then this is longer than a demo, so I’ll gladly buy it. The full game will probably include this or something, so it’s not mandatory, and even if it’s not there’ll be bundles.

        • Budgiecat

          So in other words….pass

        • Heisst

Longer than a demo? Bravely Default and EO4’s demo would like a word with you. They are free too.

  • LastBoss

    Man that’s short, no problem.

  • Dick Mountainjoy

Is this counting cutscenes? Because MGR has 2 hours of cutscenes alone.

    • Auragar

  • DarthNemesis

  • icup ✔️

of course it’s short. kojima’s idea was to release it with the phantom pain. but higher up want it out faster and make double the profit by selling it separate.

    • Dick Mountainjoy

You do realize he’s the VP of Konami right? He literally is the higher ups.

      • icup ✔️

you realize the board members have the power to replace any of the staff of konami including the President and VP.

        • Dick Mountainjoy

You do realize that even before becoming VP Kojima had enough pull to make the higher ups reverse their decision on not making Lords of Shadows the new Castlevania?

          • icup ✔️

apparently that’s not the case now. he holds more responsibility and is someone’s else lapdog now… if he wants to keep his position.

            • Dick Mountainjoy

I think you are giving him far too little credit.

At this point Kojima is Konami, and the only reason he doesn’t do other things than MGS is because they don’t make as much money.

If he had any artistic integrity left, he sure as hell wouldn’t let Avi Arad have the MGS film rights and let him recast Big Boss.

              • icup ✔️

one thing you have right, kojima is the face of konami… but let me get back to my original point before we derail this even further.

VP is about 4-5 tiers below in the corporate hierarchy. sure he’s high up there but there are still others higher than him who made the call.

konami is not about pleasing fans, it’s about what will bring in money sooner than later as any business would.

  • Budgiecat

In other news, not to be outdone by Konami, Capcom has just announced they will release a $40 1 hour demo for their free 2 play Deep Down game…

    • HighBrowDrifter

Don’t give them any ideas Bud ಠ_ಠ)

  • Impressionnant

I want to get off Mr Kojima’s wild ride. I was going to buy this if it was at least 5 hours (ideally I wanted it to be 8 or so), but 2 hours is just funny as hell. Definitely gonna rent it.

  • Dick Mountainjoy

Jeez, That’s like half the size of Blood Dragon.

  • Crossbones (Prodigy-X)

No buy, I’ll just wait till it drops to $20 or bundled with The Phantom Pain.

  • DarthNemesis

Why did I get a thumbs down because i fuse to buy something that is not worth my money?

    • karmacoma

Yeah, fanboys are negging everyone with common sense. ;p

  • Bobby Jennings

    Paid demo lets go!

I might still buy though. Dammit

  • LunarHaven

UUUUUUUM… passing on this until it gets a 5 buck super offer on PSN. NOT paying a half game’s price for 1/5th of a games length.

  • Wolf Star

well… I don’t know what to say about this… I tought this was Part 1 for MGS 5 and not a single player DLC for MGS 5. I’m skipping on this one. I rather get something else for now.

  • りんごタルト@エスカのアトリエ

    Haha, Kojima. Nope.

  • tokyobassist

$40 for a 5 minute speedrun/2 hours of gameplay. What do I look like? A Kojima fanboy that lacks common sense and integrity?

Get the fuck out of my face with this nonsense. This is less content and length than games of the same price point or less. New engine being an irrelevant argument because all games use new/modified/custom engines. People said gaming is getting better yet we are paying $20 short of a full priced game for a demo…

  • Irp4n

I bet this will be free sometime later… just like MGR DLCs lol

  • Aldridge517

I’m still confused. Are Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain two separate games, or are they both part of Metal Gear Solid V (one game)?

    • veniks

Separate games under the name of MGS: V.
      Ground Zeroes is a prologue
The Phantom Pain will be the real big game.

  • Arij Malik

What was the point of using Bluray discs if u want to make a game of like 2 GB

  • TetsuyaHikari

I already posted this over in the free forum, but it’s relevant here too, so I’ll just leave it here also, heh. So, Kojima just tweeted a few pictures from a business meeting he had with Hamamura-san recently. This one in particular stuck out to me since it made me laugh.

I’d be speechless to if I was viewing the ending to a game that I just started playing a couple of hours ago.

If you don’t want to click on the status to view the comments, it’s all good. I’ll just share mine with you so you can have a good laugh. I still plan on getting Ground Zeroes (mainly cause I don’t want to go into The Phantom Pain without experiencing whatever this has to offer first), but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t already disappointed with it.

“It’s quite sad that this “game” can be finished in the time it takes to have a meeting. Maybe I will beat it during lunch.”

    No thanks.

  • Nice Boat

At times like this I need a photoshop of Big Boss beating Sonic the Hedgehog in a race

  • Zancrow

A glorified demo for 30-40 bucks.
    You done goofed, Kojima!

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

I agree with Anyone who says that if Next Gen is like this game then Last Gen. is the way to go.

  • gekitsu

well, its going to have to be really good, then.

  • TetsuyaHikari

Kojima just posted a new Twitter status recently, probably to reassure people regarding the play time of Ground Zeroes. It still sounds like damage control to me. Of course if you play to compete on leaderboards, you will get more than 2 hours of gameplay out of it, but what about those that don’t care about that sort of thing?

Regardless, I’ll be surprised if I put in 5 hours into it. I’m guessing 4 1/2 hours of those will probably for cutscenes anyway.

  • Budgiecat

Let’s try this again for you:

    He said:

“So you are OK with not only paying upwards of 40 bucks for a demo, but in doing so telling companies that is an OK practice?”

He said YOU, meaning you the consumer, and anyone else that would STILL choose to buy this regardless of the lack of content over the price; which then would be “telling the companies that it is an OK practice” (aka voting with your wallet).

YOU then said more or less:

” the people who choose to buy the game are telling companies that it’s an okay practice, and that’s their choice”

Which is basically what he said! The only difference is he asked you if you morally agreed with it. And then instead of answering, you just regurgitated what he said…..smh

  • $18114340

The difference between what he said and what I said are that he posed a question where I made a statement. Asking a question comes with an implication whereas what I said is merely a statement of what I already believe to be true.

For example, if you asked me the question, “So you’re okay with telling companies that doing this is OK?”, you are definitely asking that with a bias towards the idea that it is NOT OK, and that you are looking for agreement and validation that what you believe is right. At this point, anybody who would disagree with you is already taking a defensive stance in the conversation.

On the other hand, if I say, “I think that this is OK, and you can’t stop me from feeling that way,” then there’s pretty much jack-all you can say in response short of mere disagreement, because I have already acknowledged that our opinions are equal.

  • Budgiecat

    Your statement was redundant

  • $18114340

I’m not complaining about your right to complain, I’m saying the reasons for your complaining are wrong and pointing out why. Deal with it.

  • Budgiecat

    opinions are not wrong

  • $18114340

    Exactly. I’m glad you agree.

  • Budgiecat

    now you just contradicted yourself

  • $18114340

I’m the Riddler and you just got riddled, motherfucker.

  • Budgiecat

Care to step outside mister? Seems you’re itchin for a deathwish that I’m willin to scratch….

  • HighBrowDrifter
