PlayStation 4 opens at 309,000 sales in Japan.

PlayStation 4

PlayStation 4 launched in Japan on Saturday. According to Famitsu numbers, the console’s first two days opened at 322,083 units. Media Create hardware sales released today show a similar number with 309,154 sold.

The highest-selling PlayStation 4 launch title was Knack. It sold 309,304 units, thanks to the fact that it was bundled with the system. Alone, it moved 150 copies.

Yakuza: Ishin was PlayStation 4’s second highest-selling game at 82,540 units. It was bested by the PlayStation 3 version, however, which sold over 138,000.

    [PS3] Knack (PS4 Starter Pack Version included) (SCE, 02/22/14) – 309,304 (New)
    PlayStation 4 – 309,154 (N/A)

So there are at least 150 persons who bought Knack as a normal retail-title. :D

Sales of the Vita are quite disappointing. Would have thought that the PS4 would help a bit. :

    • Kiryu

True but they are atleast stable as the 3DS drops and drops.

      • jujubee88

Well, I am at least glad both handhelds have good enough software prospects so they can endure small chips in the armor.

        3DS has Monster Hunter
VITA has big time idol and MonHun clone action titles

All coming this year (not sure about the exact dates).

  • yuina

And 3DS continues to plummet into oblivion. Nintendo needs to release a new model ASAP.

    • http://gamewise.co/ Nick Pantazis

It just needs new big game releases. It’s not falling because of the hardware model. Software is always more important than hardware. Also “into oblivion” is a silly exaggeration for what is still the best selling system when we aren’t looking at launch weeks.

      • Budgiecat

yep. Software moves hardware. Not the other way around…

      • yuina

Problem is the 3DS has already received pretty much all of
its heavy hitters. The only title on the horizon that is going to create any sort of momentum is MH4U, and that’s still 6 months away.

And no, it’s really not an exaggeration. This is a huge YOY decline that should be massively worrying for Nintendo, doubly so when you consider they don’t have a home console to pick up the slack anymore. A new model is perhaps the most efficient way to create a short term sales boost at the moment, especially if Nintendo can lower the price in the process.

        • doc.exe

Or you know, just release the 2DS which has not been released in Japan yet.

  • http://www.dorqs.com/ Pace

since when is knack a ps3 title?

  • Kiryu

Could it be that the 3DS is starting to feel market saturation? It plummets week after week.

  • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

PS4 titles didn’t do that great, but that’s to be expected since not enough people own the console yet, so I’m not really surprised by Ryu ga Gotoku: Ishin! selling more on PS3 as opposed to PS4.

    • DarthBrian

There’s a bigger install base for PS3 so it makes sense it’d sell better on PS3. Same reason Titanfall will sell better on 360.

      • DeadnBuried

Not actually as likely. Microsoft have practically brainwashed people into thinking Titanfall is ONLY on Xbox One, and they’ve even delayed the 360 version so it’s LESS competition. Titanfall wil sell loads of Xbox Ones, especially now that it’s bundled at release.

We haven’t even SEEN the 360 version yet, and there’s literally posters all over the place saying its “Only on Xbox One”. The 360 version will sell like shit purely because of Microsoft’s marketing approach.

        • DarthBrian

I haven’t seen a single ad or poster or anything that says “only on Xbox One”. They all say “only on Xbox and PC” that I’ve seen.

And I guarantee you 360 version will sell the best. Take it to the bank. It’s a done deal. Set in stone.

There are 80 million 360s out there and only 3+ million Xbones. The law of large numbers is pretty clear in this matter.

          • DeadnBuried

Just where I work alone, there’s a massive Xbox One poster that says “Only on Xbox One”, followed by Titanfall, Forza 5, Dead Rising 3 and Ryse. I’ve seen similar posters elsewhere. Maybe it’s just their UK marketing arm that’s particularly sleazy? Titanfall even has top billing on that poster.

At this point they don’t even want people to KNOW that Titanfall is on the 360, so that subtle misguidance and the delay of the 360 version will do some serious damage to its sales, not to mention that it’s by a different developer entirely and likely won’t be half as good.

The odds are definitely in the 360’s favour, but with the way that Microsoft have marketed the game as an Xbox One experience, now complete with bundle that gives the game for free, it’s going to sell a stupid amount of Xbox Ones, and anyone with sense will just buy the PC version because it’ll still look pimp unlike the 360 version, and won’t require new hardware OR an Xbox Live subscription.

I won’t mind being wrong, but I’m quite keen to see how it turns out for Microsoft. At this point they really do NEED people to buy an Xbox One for it.

            • DarthBrian

Well, that’s false advertising. Someone should sue them.

            • AdamBoy64

Our advertising here in our country for TItanfall/X1, you see big posters with the words –

“XBOX ONE. The only next-gen console with Titanfall.”

It’s clever. Microsoft just saturate with marketing. They’re very good at it – either that or they just throw obscene amounts of cash at it.

              • DeadnBuried

Well at least that statement is actually true. Here they’re literally lying to trick people into buying an Xbox One for a game they can play on two other existing platforms.

Marketing is definitely where Microsoft truly destroy their competition. They throw so much money at their products’ marketing campaigns that they can make damn near anything stick.

      • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

        >There’s a bigger install base for PS3 so it makes sense it’d sell better on PS3

Well yeah…? What did you think I meant?

        ._.

        • Pyrofrost

Tetsuya, did you read my post to you?

        • DarthBrian

          I was agreeing I think?

  • https://twitter.com/Stealth___ Stealth

Mobile has basically decimated the Japanese Hardware Market. Absolutely terrible hardware numbers all around.

3DS has 3 big releases next week and through the beginning of March so that system has some hope, and will rebound.

At least that system has the excuse of already selling a mega ton.

    • jujubee88

I am cool with anything coming from Japan, as long as it’s quality.

Speaking as a VITA owner, I get more than enough titles I want from there but not all as quality as I remember them being back in PSP era. Not even close.

More Japanese devs need to jump on the crowd source funding train. The legendary studios and game creators I’m sure can set almost any number (and with the right game concept) meet their funding goals.

      • https://twitter.com/Stealth___ Stealth

Crowdfunding I think is actually quite awful.

    • Shippoyasha

I don’t think this has solely has to do with mobile gaming. Japanese games remaining expensive in a heavy recession isn’t helping, mobile games being big or not.

  • DarthNemesis

The WiiU is the only thing that looks bad. All PS platforms are in the top 5 (minus the old PSP) which is great.

    • https://twitter.com/Stealth___ Stealth

wut? Every sony platform but PS4 sold just as terribly as Nintendo platforms.

      • Raiyu

depends on what you mean by terribly. The Vita is up more than 50% YoY from last year. And Soul Sacrifice Delta comes out next week so sales will get a bump. It’s hanging in there.

        • https://twitter.com/Stealth___ Stealth

Vita being up more than 50% YoY means nothing if the value it was selling is just as bad as the value its selling now.

  • Renaldi Saputra

    Kurobas did quite well

  • Pyrofrost

Home and portable console gaming is DOOOOOMED~

  • bloodiOS

    [PS4] Tomb Raider (Square Enix, 02/22/14) – 12,093 (Strong)

    ……??? Strong?

    • TheExile285

Lol, I feel like Sal did they on purpose xD

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Well, considering only a little over 300,000 consoles sold and 12,093 units of this game sold, I’d say that is kind of strong. If the hardware sales were in PS3 territory and only that many units sold, I’d say it was weak, but we’re under a different circumstance at the moment since there are less consumers for the PS4 version right now.

Sal could have very well been joking though :p

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

The HTML code to make (New) bold is ‘strong’ in brackets. So I accidently typed “strong” an extra time. xD

  • Anime10121

So… I guess some folks REALLY wanted a physical copy of Knack :/

    • SuperLuigi

Or they are ignorant to the fact it came with it and buying it for their kids or something. Wonder how many of those 150 take theirs back the next day xD

  • TheExile285

I find something extremely pleasing about Knack being #1 by a large margin.

I wish Yakuza sales were higher.

    • Stacy Connor

Well, if anything, being packaged with the system will indeed help. Don’t think you can even purchase it separately right now in Japan.

      • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

You can. The standalone version sold 150 copies.

      • TheExile285

Really? Wasn’t aware it was only bundled with the system. =O

        *aaaaand Ninja’d by Sal xD

        • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

Well, it’s in the post if you read it. =)

    • Pyrofrost

It’s really not a bad start for a RgG spinoff title though. At 220,698 in sales, it has jumped off to a good start; fairing better than “Kenzan!” which was at about 180k for week 1.

  • Eder García

good opening week for the PS4. Panic mode at Kyoto’s HQ

    • https://twitter.com/Stealth___ Stealth

      uh no

  • jujubee88

VITA TV had increased. I wonder what’s up with that?

The thing hasn’t even been updated to add DS4 support (or at least not yet from what I hear on twitter).

    • César H. Sandoval

You can use the VitaTV as a streambox for your PS4.
So, Remote Play in other rooms, Maybe that’s why.

  • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

    Congrats to Sony.

  • artemisthemp

How come Knack sold more copies than PS4?
Oh well at less it doesn’t do a ET

    • Eder García

people in Japan imported the PS4

  • Elvick

Well, PS Vita TV did increase… but not by much, so it could just be a coincidence. Tells me nothing. Guess I’ll see what next week is like.

    Most things dropped.

Did the 360 stop production in Japan? I mean, I wonder how long it can continue to sell like that if there’s a finite stock.

I want to see one of the major gaming websites make a comprehensive investigative article, explaining why consoles+handhelds in Japan are in decline. I have my own assumptions (PS2 and Wii’s success hid the reality that Japan wants everything mobile, and the “Famicom generation” actually grew up and lost interest in games during the early ’00s), but I’m just one guy with only so many resources. If we’re looking at one of the major gaming markets ignoring an ENTIRE generation of video games except 3DS (and, haha, Vita), the Western gaming community and industry would like an explanation from a trustworthy (and English-speaking) source.
