Evil takes hold on August 26.

The Evil Within

The Evil Within, Tango Gameworks’ new survival horror game led by Shinji Mikami, will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on August 26 in North America and August 29 in Europe, Bethesda Softworks announced.

The game follows Detective Sebastian Castellanos and his partners, who encounter a mysterious and powerful force while investigating the scene of a gruesome mass murder. After seeing his fellow officers slaughtered, Sebastian is ambushed and knocked unconscious to awaken in a deranged world where creatures wander among the dead. To unravel what’s behind this evil force, Sebastian must fight for survival.

The Evil Within promises to be a “pure survival horror,” giving players limited resources at their disposal. It will combine “highly-crafted environments, horrifying anxiety, and an intricate story” to create an “immersive world that will bring you to the height of tension.”

August, huh? That feels like a long time from now. I wonder if I’ll even bother getting a PS4 before then. If I’m still going to be getting use out of my PS3 up until August, hell… I’ll probably just end up waiting until Christmas before buying a PS4 at this rate, lol.

    • Rezar

I feel the same way. The PS4 is the only next gen console I need at this point. I see no need to get one with all the PS3 JRPG exclusives coming out.

      • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

On an unrelated note, there seems to be something wrong with your avatar, Rezar. Yours is the only one that doesn’t seem to be loading for some reason.

        • Rezar

I’ve noticed. I’ll change it or fix it soon.

        • Budgiecat

          Yours as well Tetsuya…

No matter how much I hit refresh, I am not seeing your Godmars avatar. Please adjust that

          • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

            Not even going there.

            • Budgiecat

You can’t run away from your true self forever….

              • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

I can run away from you and that’s good enough for me.

    • tokyobassist

Cross gen is killing any interest I have for a next-gen console. The sooner there are next-gen exclusive games, the sooner I’ll get one.

Seriously apart from Mirror’s Edge 2, Final Fantasy XV and Hyper Light Drifter…not much reason for me to care.

      • Anime10121

This!!! Need less cross gen and more “this”gen only games! I mean, whats the point of having a next gen console if you can play the same games only slightly less pretty on last gen consoles.

        • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

I think it’s more of a “Let’s not screw over all the people that still have last gen consoles and allow them to experience the game as well.” It’s not as if the PS4 has really been out THAT long anyway. Give it a year or so and you’ll stop seeing the cross gen games.

          • Anime10121

I hope so, as I dont remember any other gen having quite this many high profile “cross-gen” releases. Updated ports of earlier games sure, but same day releases on both systems (well other than EA Sports titles), I dont remember many “high profile titles” releasing like that prior to this gen.

Hopefully, by 2015, this kind of stuff wont be happening anymore…

          • tokyobassist

That’s the optimistic way of looking at it. From a business standpoint, it makes sense because more people own current gen systems than the newer stuff so there is more money to be made.

Based on what a lot of devs and publishers are saying in interviews though, it sounds like certain games are clearly inferior on current gen systems (despite my personal opinions on their fun factor/quality) like Watch Dogs, Destiny and a few others. As much as it’s nice that we don’t have to buy a new system to play these games, I’m also not going to bother playing half assed versions of games.

            • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

              >it sounds like certain games are clearly inferior on current gen systems
              >I’m also not going to bother playing half assed versions of games

People are too demanding, honestly. These “clearly inferior” versions are running at 720p and 30fps instead of 60fps at 1080p (take Ryu ga Gotoku: Ishin for example), but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with 30fps and 720p. Just because you don’t have a game running at some crazy resolution at 60fps all the time doesn’t mean the game is “half assed”. As I said before, a lot of people simply just want 60fps because it’s higher than 30fps.

              • tokyobassist

I’m speaking on my behalf not anybody elses but Bayonetta felt like shit at 30fps. That PS3 version compared to the Xbox 360 version is pathetic. It’s not even the same game. Framerate to me should take precedence over graphics because how a game feels ultimately determines it’s future playability. I’m not saying it should be the rule but I don’t want to deal with that level of discrepancy between versions again. That game is case study for 30fps vs 60fps. Can’t argue the benefits of better framerates as it’s the equivalent to comparing a gourmet burger to a McDouble. Yeah OBVIOUSLY you can fix your hunger with either one but the taste and quality is also clearly better with the gourmet burger right?

F-Zero X is a great example of a game that stands the test of time. Nintendo sacrificed graphic fidelity because the game didn’t convey the sense of speed they were looking forward and the game didn’t feel as responsive. It’s one of the few survivors on the N64 that aged well due to the smooth 60fps and tight gameplay unlike some of my old favorites.

                • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

                  >I’m speaking on my behalf not anybody elses but Bayonetta felt like shit at 30fps.

Sorry, man. You lost credibility when trying to bring Bayo into the discussion. Everyone knows that was just a shitty port job by Sega when putting it on PS3 and has absolutely nothing to do with it being 30fps.

If a game is actually DESIGNED to run at 30fps, then it will remain stable as such. By your logic, 30fps also fails because of Zone of the Enders HD Edition, you know… Even though they also dropped the ball on that port as well (sure, they released a patch to fix it, but still… It was under 30fps in the beginning), and let’s not forget about the PC port of Dark Souls unable to maintain a steady 60fps because… You guessed it! The port itself was shitty.

So yeah, 30fps vs 60fps is kind of a moot point honestly since people have been playing games at 30fps for years without a problem. I honestly believe most of the people wanting 60fps don’t really know WHY they want 60fps, just that it’s “better” because it’s a higher number. Funny how they don’t argue for their movies to be made in 60fps, even though they’re made in under 30fps and have been for decades, lol.

                  • tokyobassist

I could care less about the politics of how these games came to be. Bayo is still garbage on PS3 regardless of who did it. Z.O.E. 2 HD WAS trash pre-patch. I rebought the PS2 game just because I could feel a difference between the two versions. Dark Souls I can’t comment on because I never played the PC port or looked in it so yeah can’t really say speak much on it.

Heck, if you have any of the Bioshock games, they have a framerate unlock feature on the PS3 versions (from my experience) in which you can play between 30 and 60 and the difference is day and night. I’m not being a smartass. I’m just saying that a game that plays well today might not play well tomorrow.

And you don’t interact with movies past the DVD menu or the ticket booth. It’s not even the same ballpark with games. You’re arguing the responsiveness of controls and your on-screen character versus watching a movie. Terrible argument as one is interactive and one isn’t.

                    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Actually, it’s not a terrible argument at all. Interactivity has nothing to do with how your eye perceives visuals. Anybody who tells you they absolutely NEED 60fps probably doesn’t know their ass from their elbow when it comes to the human eye because you can’t even see beyond 27fps or so anyway.

Yes, 60fps will undoubtedly look smother (because you have more frames, obviously), but it’s a placebo. Think of it as a magic trick for your eye. Additional frames are added to give the effect that things are moving more smoothly, which makes sense, but 30fps can do just the same with less risk of tear, stuttering, etc. They’ve been making games in 30fps for decades and people have been fine with them. Again… The only reason most want 60fps now is because it’s becoming the standard for games, much like 1080p.

I’ve said it before, but… It’s kind of similar to the difference in audio between 320kbps and FLAC format. Audiophiles will always be on the lookout for FLAC as opposed to 320kbps because it’s lossless audio quality, but in 9 out of 10 cases, 320kbps is perfectly fine for people and most of them won’t be able to tell you the difference between the two anyway. I really wish people would stop being so gung-ho over 60fps though since a lot of them seem to just be complaining to complain for the lack of 60fps without even knowing why they want it (outside of “it looks more stable”).

                    • tokyobassist

At least you present a debate. For that, much respect.

At the end of the day, we’ll both be playing this and supporting the horror genre so it’s a win. I get where you’re coming from though.

Out of curiosity, what are you getting Ground Zeroes on?

                    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

PS3, but I don’t expect much out of it, lol. It’s just supposed to tide me over until Project Diva F 2nd comes out later in the month.

  • tokyobassist

idTech5 runs on a scaling engine. It’s already confirmed that the version we’ve been watching footage of is a cut above current systems but below the PS4/XB1.

Stability and graphics kind of matter for these kind of games because it’s about the atmosphere (something graphics can completely ruin with horror games) and as far as the framerate goes…RAGE ran like crap on current gen consoles so I might…just maybe…get a PS4 when this game drops if I’m not in Japan by then.

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

      >Stability and graphics kind of matter for these kind of games because it’s about the atmosphere

You kidding? Resident Evil and Silent Hill look like shit by today’s standards. The music and environment was enough to capture the atmosphere for the games. The Evil Within/Psychobreak won’t be any different.

I honestly doubt you’ll feel any less or more scared on a different console (or PC for that matter).

      • ayb_91

Omg. You are encouraging lvl is Max. Congratulations for reaching such a great thing.

        • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

I’m just speaking from personal experience, that’s all. When I first played Silent Hill, the graphics aren’t what made it creepy to me. It was the ambient music composed by Akira Yamaoka that really helped draw me into the atmosphere.

That and the environment itself really captured the mood of the game.

          • karmacoma

I agree completely. I remember playing Silent Hill 2 when it first came out and being creeped out by the soundtrack and sound effects, not the grain effect or even the character designs.

            • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Well, at least someone knows where I’m coming from, haha.

              • tokyobassist

I guess if you’re talking strictly Silent Hill 2. I think Silent Hill 3 holds up really well especially in places like the Hospital and Church.

Can’t say graphics don’t matter though because under the category of graphics, art direction and special effects like grain filter (while taken for granted) are still associated with it (for me personally).

Also unless you played RAGE, you’d know how shit idTech5 is on current gen. Screen tearing and texture pop in’s every time you move or turn your character. That would definitely kill any atmosphere this game is trying to convey if it’s not done right so I’m not exactly sold on the PS3 version yet.

                • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

                  >Can’t say graphics don’t matter though because under the category of graphics, art direction and special effects like grain filter (while taken for granted) are still associated with it (for me personally)

I’m not saying graphics don’t matter. I’m saying they don’t play as big of a role for me. It would be like watching an 80’s horror film with bad camera angles and special effects, but still enjoying it for the story, location, and BGM because they do such a good job of capturing the atmosphere. Sure, better camera angles and better special effects would certainly help, but it’s not a deal breaker for me, which is why I’m fine with how this game is.

It really amazes me, even to this day, that people can look at something like The Evil Within, then complain about graphics. It really makes me wonder how people form their standards if they’re already putting down a game like this for its graphics, PS3 or not.

                  • tokyobassist

The graphics look bad? When did I say that? I was saying that idTech5 ran like crap on current gen consoles.RAGE was simultaneous one of the best and worse looking games I’ve ever played. (which is the same engine this game runs on) because of the abundance of screen tearing and texture pop in BUT it did maintain 60fps with no dips.

I’m simply implying that I HOPE that Evil Within is a bit better optimized than RAGE was for current consoles and that graphics can contribute to this game because it’s more realistic than stylized. Still really hype for it though.

                    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Well, you’re certainly not defending the graphics, lol. Still, just have to wait and see how things turn out, I guess. I’m looking forward to it, but who knows… Maybe all of your doubts and whatnot will become a reality come August.

          • Budgiecat

What year did you play the first Silent Hill…

            • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Ummm… Before the year 2000? It had camera issues out the ass (not sure if this is still the case with the HD collection), but why do you ask?

              • Budgiecat

Because hindsight is 20/20 and perspectives within the period a game initially comes out and things of that nature…

                • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Eh… People thought FFVII looked amazing when it first came out, but even I could have told you it looked like shit back then, what with Cloud’s blockhands and all that.

  • XXX

I wish it sooner, oh well can’t complain :) I wonder how big a gap the difference between the current gen and next gen versions will be.

    • Budgiecat

by 2020 we will have photo realistic graphics

  • Cygdor

Is this Mikami’s last game as director?

    • Anime10121

Yep, then he’s going strictly into the producing role :(

      • Cygdor

        Thanks.

  • ayb_91

Ugh. Till 26th August then. Would get it for my precious PS4 for sure.

  • $3582264

Here is hope that this game will NOT be like resident evil 4. I couldnt stand that after all this waiting…

  • artemisthemp

I fear playing this game after been scared by Outlast
