$1.8 million gets game on PS Vita, $2.8 million on 3DS.

Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians

Final Fantasy Tactics director Yasumi Matsuno has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a new tactical RPG for PC, Mac, iOS, Android, Windows Tablets, and if stretch goals are reached, PS Vita and 3DS.

Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians is the “spiritual successor” to Matsuno’s lineup of tactical RPGs, which includes Vagrant Story, Tactics Ogre, and Final Fantasy XII. It introduces players to the fantasy world of Rasfalia, where knights, wizards, archers, and creatures roam a vast landscape “that holds the secret stories of more than half a century of bloody war.” Players will “discover and relive” the land’s hidden tales of heroic deeds and uncover the source of legends.

The preliminary goal is $600,000 to get the game on PC and Mac. If $1.8 million is raised, the game will also come to PS Vita. And $2.8 million will secure a 3DS release. Other goals include additional scenarios, modes, classes, and new game plus.

So basically he’s saying, “It’ll come to Cellphones by default and real game platforms like Vita/3DS if you throw enough money at us”?

    No thanks.

    • Zackasaur

To be fair, it is cheaper to get a game out on mobile platforms.

But I’m personally only interested in it on Vita, so I won’t play it if that goal isn’t reached. I’ll withdraw my pledge if the Vita goal isn’t met.

$1.8 million to get it on Vita?

This game better be a godsend for tactics fanatics.

    • Elvick

People jerked off to MN9 and it’s blatant baiting stretch goals. So, I guess they want to get that sort of success.

  • sunK1D

Too many platforms. Gotta wonder the overall quality of the game… specially considering it’s coming to phones before actual dedicated gaming devices…

  • http://Gematsu.com Vayne

I have to see further details to convince me.

  • Budgiecat

Drop the iOS/Android and make it or handhelds and console only

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Yeah… One of the reasons I’m not throwing money at my monitor right now. I don’t want to support this shit if it doesn’t even make it to handheld like I want.

      • Budgiecat

And not only that but if its going to be gimped because its on iOS/Android. Yeah do not want if thats the case…

        • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

I don’t see it being gimped because of that, honestly. I may not like the idea, but I’d be silly to think iOS/Android has any sort of impact on how it turns out on PC, Vita, and 3DS.

  • Six

It is kind of depressing that Yasumi fucking Matsuno has to go and beg for money while shit developers like Idea Factory are able to churn out console games on a regular basis.

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

You may hold Yasumi Matsuno to a high regard, and that’s fine, but I don’t think it’s really fair to call Idea Factory a ‘shit developer’.

      • Zackasaur

Yeah, that’s never a good way to start a fruitful discussion.

Which is sad, because the point is otherwise an interesting one!

    • Elvick

Yeah, it’s depressing Yasumi Matsuno is choosing to go with Kickstarter to make a game rather than start a business and get his shit in order to do it himself.

While Idea Factory makes low budget games for a niche and are successful in doing so. I guess Idea Factory should raise the budgets of their projects to 50 billion because that’s good business.

Don’t be mad that Idea Factory runs a good business. If their games were selling Call of Duty numbers and they remained the low budget stuff with many flaws that they have… I’d understand your anger. But they’re niche.

Comparing the two is moronic. Too much salt is bad for you.

      • Six

So, what, every freelancer needs to “get their shit in order”?

And what does IF raising their budgets have to do with anything?

        • Elvick

IF has low budgets, that require low sales for profit. Which allows them to stay in business.

Don’t be mad that they run a good business and aren’t going to fold. The only way they would is if they arbitrarily increased budget for no reason and made the same kind of game with it that sold to the same niche.

So deal with it. The IF hate is so dumb.

          • Six

I can hate IF all I want.

You still didn’t answer my first part.

            • Zackasaur

Elvick’s tone is probably a bit too aggressive here, but the idea behind what he is saying makes sense.

Yasumi Matsuno COULD make his games without Kickstarter if he got some devs, built a business, etc. And maybe he even plans on doing that if the Kickstarter is successful.

However, Kickstarter is the laziest and easiest way to get that process started, so even noteworthy freelancers are often inclined to use it.

What one would -hope- is that the Kickstarter is successful, and that he uses the success responsibly to start a little studio, similar to IF (in business, not in type of games). If he could do even better than IF and work with higher budgets, that would be great.

If he remains Kickstarter-dependent, though, that shows real weakness in his abilities to fully manage a project as a freelancer.

              • Six

But why should he give up being a freelancer? I mean, he has worked on games before without Kickstarter.

He was the writer for MadWorld, he worked on the PSP port of Let Us Cling Together and he made Crimson Shroud.

Also, this game will get made with or without the funding from Kickstarter. The developer is a niche mobile company who is doing this to get more resources for other platforms and to get more people on the project.

If he works better as a freelancer (which he just might, after what happened with FFXII), then more power to him.

    • adhesive

It’s most likely Playdek using Kickstarter to drum up support for the game. I highly doubt Matsuno would ever be hurting for development money considering how huge he is in the industry.

      • Six

I wish he’d join Mistwalker, but I’m sure he’d be right where he is now.

        Making mobile games.

    • GDI

Well he left Level 5. To me that’s tantamount to leaving Blizzard. So yeah you need a lotta convincing just to get the guy to work for you.

  • Elvick

I’ll see if it can reach PS Vita before considering backing.

  • Zackasaur

I’ll back it and take my backing away if it doesn’t seem like it’s going to reach the Vita goal.

It better reach the Vita goal. >:|

  • MrKappa

Why is the Vita goal lower than the 3DS goal? I always thought it was cheaper to make games on the 3DS.

    • Six

It’s probably easier to port it from mobile to Vita given resolutions/screen size and stuff.

With the 3DS, you’d have to accommodate the second screen and lower the resolution a lot.

    • TheExile285

It’s easier to port games on Vita.

  • bloodiOS

Well, here’s what I’m going to do:
    – I’ve already pledged in hope that it will reach the stretch goal for Vita. If all is well and they make it in time, I’ll play it once I get a Vita.
    – I’ll cancel my pledge if it doesn’t look like it’ll make it that goal within the last few hours of the campaign. I’ll grab a torrent for the PC version if I ever want to play it.

    • Six

      You’ll pirate it? Classy.

      • bloodiOS

Well, I will only fork out the money if it’s on the system I prefer to play the game on, if not, I see absolutely no reason to support it.

        • Six

And now you are trying to justify piracy. I love it.

          • bloodiOS

Justifying it? Now you’re reaching. I’m just stating how I feel, not excusing my own actions. Heck, I don’t even feel the need to.

            • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

This just kind of left a bad taste in my mouth, man… Especially considering this a kickstarter project. Torrenting a kickstarter project is like stealing money from a blind man. I can at least sort of understand if you steal from a company that released an AAA title because they are probably sitting on a shitload of money, but come on… These guys are already scraping the bottom of the barrel to get the project up and running, and you’re already claiming you’ll steal their product?

Not only that, but you blatantly support your cause by stating you don’t feel the need to excuse your actions? Yeah, you definitely lost some points here.

              • bloodiOS

I guess I’m just feeling spiteful, and that’s just my overall attitude toward any project that supports iOS and Android from the start (which I somehow missed earlier.) I don’t particularly care what their situation is, but that fact alone is enough to make me feel spiteful. But whatever, I’m just saying I’ll torrent it because I feel like saying it as such. I truly don’t have any interest in the game if it doesn’t make it to the Vita’s stretch goal. So let’s just stay simple, if they reach the Vita’s goal, my pledge stays, if not, my pledge goes.

                • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Soooo… You torrent out of spite then? You somehow managed to dig your hole deeper and I didn’t even think that was possible. I may not agree with iOS and Android choices for gaming titles, but still… To make a decision like that and try to run a company into the ground just screams ‘entitlement’ from a consumer standpoint.

“You ever give it to me how I want it or I’ll make sure you don’t ever release another game again.”

                  • bloodiOS

Alright, then I won’t. Now they’re all safe from me.

  • icup ✔️

i heard matsuno is a very big fan of flame of recca.

  • Six

Just hit $100k. Hopefully it’ll hit that Vita goal.

  • H_Floyd

I’m a bit irked that, while they announced Hitoshi Sakimoto as the composer, he most certainly didn’t compose what is heard in this trailer.

Will it be Project Phoenix all over again? The developers announcing a well-known composer, when really that person will only do a little bit of music and then other composers do the rest. Project Phoenix used Uematsu’s name for leverage, when in the original funding goal he would have only done a few tracks at most (and people totally fell for it).

So, which is it PlayDek? Will Sakimoto do 100% of the music, or will we have to settle for the underwhelming style we hear in the trailer?

EDIT: Well, I should have read the kickstarter page. Sakimoto will be “added” to the project… at $1.3 million. But the line isn’t very clear about how much he’ll write. In other words, there’s already a composer doing the majority of the soundtrack, and it ain’t Sakimoto.

    • bloodiOS

Since Hitoshi Sakimoto is part of the $1.3M stretch goal, I think he won’t officially be part of the project until that goal is reached. Even then, he probably only going to be handling part of the soundtracks, definitely not all of them.

EDIT: I posted before you edited your post, so never mind.

    • Murasaki

In the comment section they said that if the strech goal is reached, Sakimoto will be the lead composer.
In other words, all the game’s music will either be composed by Sakimoto or not at all.

That’s how I understand it anyway.

  • fallen

Matsuno / Sakimoto sans Yoshida. Hmmm…
Don’t get me wrong, I’m still backing this.

  • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

Erm…. No offense to the developers, but it has to have at least a segment of gameplay for us to see potential… Even if you stick in pretty pictures or Yasumi Matsuno’s name on it, it isn’t very convincing…

Perhaps that’s just me from a backer’s point of view…

    • Murasaki

What bothers me the most is that how they have yet to detail Yasumi Matsuno’s involvement in this project.
I will back this project ONLY if Yasumi Matsuno is the one who creates the world, writes the story and to a degree supervise/involved in the gameplay. Less than that, and it’s bye bye.

  • GDI

Wrong, wrong, wrong. It is not “Yasumi Matsuno Launches Kickstarter”. It’s “Western dev Playdek Launches Kickstarter and enlists help of Yasumi Matsuno and others”.

The video should have at least have a segment with Matsuno talking about the project, but no, it’s just another western semi-indie game but one with good Japanese connections.

That said, I will buy it on Vita provided it comes at an all-in-one price (No microtransactions! Though a few DLC might be ok). Crimson Shroud left me wanting more.

  • Derik Bumgarner

an update says the stretch goals have been revamped with ports to vita
and ds being higher priorities. also a port to ps4 is on the list.

an update before that says the card game is separate and on a separate budget
