Rumor: PSone and PS2 emulation headed to PS4
posted on 01.28.14 at 11:53 AM EST by (@salromano)
Sony targeting HD resolutions, suggests Eurogamer source.

PSone and PlayStation 2 game compatibility is coming to PlayStation 4 via local emulation, according to a “well-placed” Eurogamer source.

The same source claims only PlayStation 3 titles are set to run in Sony’s PlayStation Now cloud service.

PlayStation 3 has built-in emulators for PSone (via disc and download), PS2 (via download), and even PSP (minis). And PS Vita has emulators for PSone and PSP downloads.

According to Eurogamer’s source, the same internal emulator strategy is planned for PlayStation 4. And Sony is trying to get older titles to run without the blurry upscaling seen on PlayStation 3, suggesting they’re targeting native HD resolutions.

Here’s an idea of what that might mean:

Gran Turismo 4 SD Gran Turismo 4 SD

  • Elvick

    God, please be true.

  • Zukato

Yes, please be true! Being a Sony Pony myself must have its advantages.

  • Ultimasamune

Cool. So how would this be delivered to people who already own PS4s? Would it be software for download? I don’t really know how this all works….

    • Anime10121

Yep, if it were true, it could be delivered by way of a standard update, as PS4 is powerful enough to emulate both the PSone and PStwo with little issue…

  • Gholizadeh

Sometimes rumors make my tummy tingle!

  • Sevyne

Not gonna hold my breath on this rumor, but it would be fantastic if true.

  • Anime10121

Sony doing this and effectively killing the market for HD remasters? However much I’d love for it to be true, I doubt it. Publishers are making FAR too much money reselling us games we already own… Though I would LOVE to be prove wrong, comeon Sony, convince me that PS4 really IS for the gamer :P

    • LordKaiser

No unless those HD remaster are only lazy upcales. No filter or upscale on internal resolution will fix SD CG videos etc.

They will still be blurry etc. and there’s games that look worse upscaled like Castlevania Curse of Darkness to give a example. Where plants and vines looks like cardboard and most walls like made out of foam.

      • Anime10121

Yep, true true, I find this rumor EXTREMELY unlikely, but alls I’m saying is, it would be nice.

Hell, I wouldnt even mind visuals like the old BC PS3’s had. They werent THAT bad to begin with imo. I mean sure hd ps2 games are nice, but I’d much rather play the games I already own on PS2 disc for free, over paying 40 bucks to play them in a higher resolution… Man I miss old school compatibility :(

        • Budgiecat

The craziest thing I saw on JPN PSN once was Resident Evil CN Veronica X HD was at one point like $10 there and they also had the PS2 version on there for $10!!

          • Anime10121

Still find it crazy that people just seemed to get over the fact that they removed a prominent and promoted feature from the PS3 and people just seemed to get over and some actually thank them for it…

I mean, I’m all for cheaper prices and whatever, but the only one who saved money from its removal was Sony. BC was one of my favorite things from the OG PS3, as it saved a lot of clutter in my entertainment set up.

            • Budgiecat

Well not like people really had a choice,

And there was that whole PS3 hacking backlash so some people like…didnt really get over it..

  • Gariya

Is PS3 emulation possible? Though knowing CELL, I wouldn’t be surprised if it isn’t.

Also, if this is true, this is going to be for PSN only and not disc-based emulation, isn’t it?

    • karmacoma

Eurogamer claims it’ll be streamed through Gaikai/PlayStation Now. So no, not disc-based.

EDIT: Nevermind, I misread. They mentioned that only PS3 titles were through PlayStation Now, and that PS1 and PS2 titles are more conventionally emulated. My bad.

  • bloodiOS

If this is true, I might just buy a PS4 sooner than I thought.

    • Gariya

      For me?

      • bloodiOS

        Buy your own.

        • Gariya

          Meanie Annie.

          • bloodiOS

If I’m going to gift away a $400 console, it would be for my younger cousin, not some random person who asks someone else for a console instead of using his own working money to pay it off.

            • Gariya

              Meanie Annie.

              • Budgiecat

Well if you watched the show, Annie can get pretty mean yeah…

            • ayb_91

She was just kidding you know. -_-

              • bloodiOS

You honestly thought I took Gariya’s words seriously?

                • Invisbin

You sure responded like you did…

                  • bloodiOS

Playing along isn’t the only way to response to jokes.

  • tubers

Hmm.. it seems like they’ll miss some opportunity to shove PS Now to some cusomers.. unless access to the “local emulation” on the PS4 requires paying for PS Now (pay-walled like Live stuff).

  • Vayne

If true, it has to be free.

    • bloodiOS

      Free for Plus subscribers xD

    • karmacoma

Well, I doubt it’ll be disc-based since they removed PS2 backwards compatibility from later PS3s and cancelled the PSP UMD-transfer service for Vita. It seems like Sony likes allowing people to replay their older games as long as they rebuy them. So I imagine it’ll be download-only.

      • Elvick

Yeah, they made me rebuy Flower on PS Vita and PS4!

And they made me buy FFVI on PSP, PS Vita, PS3 separately!

        Oh wait.

        • karmacoma

There’s crossbuy on some PSN titles, but if you’re going to argue that they didn’t remove PS2 backwards compatibility on PS3s made after 2008, or that they *didn’t* cancel the UMD transfer service, you’re wrong.

Also, the PS4 currently has no way of playing anything other than PS4 discs and blu-ray films.

          • AdamBoy64

As you say, I also think it’d be through download-only.
How else would they make any money from it?

          • Elvick

That’s why it took them forever to even begin to start selling PS2 games on PSN. Evil plans revealed. And never, in all time, have we been entitled to digital versions of retail things we purchased. We don’t get free digital movies because we have the VHS sitting in our closet.

People had time to buy a full b/c PS3. And the PS2 was sold forever and a day. If you’re unable to play your PS2 games physically, then sucks for you.

The UMD transfer service was all about rebuying your games. Just at a discount. So… derp. You’re wrong. Hilariously so.

It’s not cross buy when it’s one thing. The PS3/Vita version of a game are made differently. While a PSone Classic is simply universal and plays on PSP/Vita/PS3.

And I don’t see what the PS4 has to do with anything. They made it clear it had no b/c.

The only way they’d be ‘greedy’ is if they re-charge for PSone/PS2 games you already bought on PSN. Unlike new games, they’re not made specifically for PS3 (at least PSones aren’t, not sure how they do PS2 Classics).

So there’s no justifiable reason to re-charge.

      • OverlordZetta

Well, they made Escape Plan for PS4 free if you already owned it.

    • Solomon_Kano

I can’t imagine they’d charge you for local emulation, since (by my reading, anyway, so I could be wrong) this implies it’s a capability they’ll be giving the existing hardware with a patch. Unless they’re already working on the PS4’s next model.

  • KIngpigeon96

If this is true I’m gonna be happy forever. There are tons of Ps2 games I want to play.

  • Hayama_Akito

Well, if this is true PS1 emulation will be totally digital because PS4 can’t read CD-ROMs.

    • Budgiecat

Hmm… that you mention this….I think this will be digital only now and not disc enabled emulation….why? Not just because of the ‘not reading CD-ROMS” (good point), but because they don’t wanna piss off people who spent loads on PSN digital games and this is a means of carrying over their PS3 PSN purchases to PS4.
Because of course, eventually over time, production of PS3s will discontinue…

To alleviate the pain in the buttness of the PS3’s complex tech for actual PS3 games, that will be rectified by the Playstation Now streaming program.

Of course this is all speculation so far….

  • OverlordZetta

If PS4s can play Crash and Spyro before Vita I’m fucking done.

  • Solomon_Kano

If this pans out, cool, but I’m going to need them to get a lot more PS2 games on PSN, if they’re going to keep emulation up on PS4. If it doesn’t pan out… ah well.

    • Anime10121

Sad but it seems like they forgot about PS2 “classics” and are just releasing PS2 shovelware :(

      • Solomon_Kano

There’s a ton of PS1 shovelware on PSN as well, so it’s just a matter of getting more PS2 games period. Take the good with the bad and all that.

        • Anime10121

Yeah true, well, at least we got San Andreas and Persona 3FES (which honestly I probably would’ve never played again had it not been a classic)…

  • DesmaX

Oh, if that’s the case, really hope they work on the compartibility issues.

And then we might get Digital Devil Saga on PSN

    • Budgiecat

      And then Devil Summoner 1 & 2…

      • shogunknight

Oh dear, i havent finished part 2 yet. God the songs are just awesome, Shoji Meguro at his best

  • shogunknight

I hope this “rumor” changes to “confirmed”. Would be a great addition to the PS4

  • karmacoma

I never owned the game, but didn’t Gran Turismo 4 have a 1080i mode? That kind of makes that sample a little disingenuous since upscaling to 1080p is much less work than a 480i title. I’d like to see how the Yakuza games upscale. Those games looked awful even at the time (although they are great games, blah blah..).

    • bloodiOS

If anything, the difference would be even easier to perceive. After all, the approach Eurogamer talks about in the article is to render everything in HD resolution (then applies AA), and that will always look better than upscaling the game from the original resolution.

      • karmacoma

So it’s PC-emulation style? Huh. I guess there’s no reason why that shouldn’t work, considering the PS4 is all PC architecture and many generations beyond the PS2.

        • bloodiOS

Yeah, otherwise there wouldn’t be any difference from what the PS3 is doing now.

  • LordKaiser

Well if I can play PS2 and PSOne games on my PC like that without problems
I don’t see why the PS4 can’t. This is the natural thing to do but the question is. Will it support discs? If not then it’s a waste.

Too bad that the PS3 is too complex to emulate like this….

    • karmacoma

I agree. If I can play my huge library of existing PS1 and PS2 games, great. I can finally put the PS2 away for good. If I have to rebuy them over PSN, though.. ehh.

  • Bobby Jennings

    This would be great.

  • Raiyu

Very doubtful about PS2 emulation. Don’t think it will happen.

Even if it does, it’ll probably be PSN only, which isn’t much of an incentive.

    • MrRobbyM

I have a huge PS2 collection, so if being able to play them all in HD without purchasing them again, then that’ll save me a lot of money and I’ll love Sony forever and ever. However, it’s unlikely since they’d probably have to test each game unless they just enable the feature and if some games have problems, oh well.

That said, even if it was only through PSN, being able to play some games again in HD is still super awesome as long as they don’t charge absurd prices for very old games.

      • shogunknight

Judging from the final fantasy prices on IOS and Android, im pretty sure if Sony wanted to make them free on PSN or allow gamers use their original discs it would only be for a few titles. Games like FF Series would probably have to be rebought

        • MrRobbyM

Aren’t the FF games on IOS and droid upscaled versions of the DS/PSP games though? That would justify the prices but much older versions that you own shouldnt have to be rebought.

  • Budgiecat

    Great news if true!

“And PS Vita has emulators for PSone and PSP downloads.”

Nice but….would REALLY be great if the Vita could emulate downloadable PS2 Classic games……

    • kirby755

That’s what I want already!!! So I can Play Persona 3 FES, La Pucelle, and Crimson Sea 2 on my Vita.

      • Budgiecat

I guess now the closest to that may be remote play…

    • OverlordZetta

I just want full access to the PSP/PS1 titles on PSN for now. It’s absurd that the PSP can play games the Vita should be able to but can’t.

      • Budgiecat

Its not about what you want….

        It’s about what I want….

and I want all of that and ZA WARUDO

  • Leon_Tekashi

Please be true and please work with discs…It would definitely save a lot of money in a long run.

    • Budgiecat

And a disc region unlock feature! lulz…

      • British_Otaku

A 100% region free x backwards compatible system would be like the second coming.

  • MrRobbyM

I’m very skeptical, I don’t see this actually happening but if they can upscale PS1/PS2 games like that, I’ll buy a PS4 as soon as I possibly can and become a shut in til at least the next year.

If not, well, I’ll just emulate games I already have on my PC.

  • LordKaiser

For your benefict I will list the games that will look bad if you increase the internal resolution:

Ar Tonelico – Only the menus, gauge , characters and monsters will look good. everything else outside of battle will look worse including the portraits.

Ar Tonelico 2 – Looks worse than the 1rst. Also pre-rendered elements will still look blurry and pixelated making them stand out.

Castlevania: Lamment of Innocence – It almost don’t have any effect and what is affected will look out of place.

Castlevania: Curse of Darkness – Same as the 1rst but worse because it seems that Konami to save space on the disc used lower pixel count textures so when you upscale them they look like made of cardboard. They look like if you used Playstation or N64 textures.

Shadow Hearts – Pre rendered textures will look out of place and will stand out. Inperfections will show more on a highter resolution.

Drakengard 2 – Black vertical bars will appear making it almost unplayable.

Those are the ones I know so far

    • MrRobbyM

WIth nearly everyone owning HDTVs nowadays, I rather have a game like Shadow Hearts look slightly out of place than blurry, low-res everything.

      • Budgiecat

Shadow Hearts 2 looks fine on my Sony 3D Display….

The only game that legitimately looked ‘bad’ was Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo, but thats because that was an early launch PS2 game that still had some PS1 like textures in it….

    • PrinceHeir

huh i played Curse of Darkness on my HDTV 32 inch and it doesn’t look bad at all.

the lines are actually sharp, but the environment does look blocky and washed out.

then again i’m used to this so i don’t really mind it at all.

  • Articuno76

    LOCAL emulation? Hell yeah.

  • Nhiroz

I thought the whole “PS Now” was going to cover ps2 games?

    • Jay

There will probably still be an option to rent PS2 games on PS Now.

    • Keegs79

Its for PS3 games and my understanding other games perhaps later. They showed off PS Now with games like The Last of Us and a few other PS3 titles.

  • Auragar

This is not going to happen. Sony is a game company and we all know how much that game companies hate their users/consumers.

    • Budgiecat

Maybe we can beat the crap out of them until they learn to love us?

      • Auragar

  • Raoni Marques

Allow me to play Wild Arms on my new consoles, plz!! Well, make it available for the Vita too!

    • Solomon_Kano

The first Wild Arms? Because that’s totally playable on Vita already. They even gave it away for the Vita’s anniversary last year.

      • Raoni Marques

Nope, the ones on Ps2, especially the 3rd one, my favorite on the series. I already have the first one on my Vita and man, what a great game =)

        • Solomon_Kano

          Ah. Gotcha.

        • LordKaiser

They look good on HD and WA5 looks the best.

          • Raoni Marques

Definitely. Too bad they never released one on ps3…one of my favorite RPG series of all time…

        • $1392518

If sony can release all the other wild arms on PSN, I would buy them in a heartbeat. Especially 3

          • Raoni Marques

Good to see there are other Wild Arms lovers out there. 3 IMO is the best game in the series hands down. Man…the setting, the characters, the enemies, the annoying yet damn cool Jet Enduro….just great.

  • Kaitou

    That looks so good,.

Another W for the PS team.

  • RoyalR R.M

Cmon, I wanna played all the best RPG on ps2.

    • Audie Bakerson

I am confused by your tense.

      • RoyalR R.M

        sorry, I was excited.

  • Samsara09

Sony deciding to lose the cheap profit with HD remasters on purpose?Where is the catch?I imagine they are planning on letting developers abuse the HD remaster pratice and then allow the emulation.Or they will even make us pay a hefty price for the emulation, lol.

ofc not, hd remaster proven better because better assets.

  • Jay

Sounds great, more reason to pick up a PS4 sooner than later.

  • 罪罰

If I can put my PS2 discs into a PS4 and they become grorious looking HD games then I’m done, I am fucking done. I’ll sell my kidney and buy a PS4.

  • Raiu

If it lets me play WA3 again, then please let it be true…. But hunting down a copy of the game on the other hand…

    • crimsonidol

WA3 was great. I really enjoyed this game and it was my start into the series.

  • LordKaiser

This is how the games would look if the internal resolution is upscaled.

Pretty much wht the HD remaster games are exept thet HD remaster games have reworked textures and the CGs are remastered.

    • Raoni Marques

I’ve played a few games of mine on the emulator, and it’s great most of the time, aside from some compatibility issues with certain games.

If they manage to do something along the lines of this emulator, I’m gonna be a real happy man.

  • PrinceHeir

this would be awesome, but to be honest i rather play them on the PS2 itself.

if your gonna rerelease something on PS4, might as well do a remaster tbh.

    • Budgiecat

You really want companies squandering their resources and time when they could be focusing on making new PS4 IP’s?

      • PrinceHeir

alot of misconception here believes that this generation seems to be lower in terms of costs.

i would say it’s even higher than last gen, but development is much easier compared to last.

and why not? one wrong game on next gen consoles could be the end for the developer as a whole.

and PS2 games are still being sold easily on Amazon US other than the early launch titles.

though they could use this opportunity to bring some of the PS2 imports from Japan and translated them here for the first time.

  • hush404

    This would be absolutely amazing.

  • miyamoto

    never trust Eurogamer

  • Omega_Shiro

This will be good if it not a rumour and has non of the bad up scaling in some games.

  • Lucas

If somebody shows of video presenting some emulator which not effort CPU power on stronger or weaker computer containing surveys it might be fake.

  • Lucas

    I don’t believe PS4,PS3,PSVITA Emulators exists.
