Rumor: Cheaper Xbox One coming this year

No word on whether it will be disc-less, however.

Xbox One

Microsoft will release a cheaper Xbox One model later this year, according to a VG247 “senior source.”

The company has reportedly told trusted publishing partners about its plans.

Although the site’s source did not confirm the system would be disc-less and feature a Bluetooth adapter, as rumored earlier this week, the console will be cheaper than the current $499 model.

It’s been a big week for Xbox One leaks. If you missed it, purported information on Microsoft’s fall lineup and other unannounced games, including Halo 2 Anniversary and Crackdown 3, can be read here.

The rumor was talking about a No Optical Disc version.
Please be a No Kinect version.

    • Elvick

I bet current Xbone owners would love that. :P

      • AdamBoy64

Ah well, that’s the breaks of being an early adopter, I guess.
Sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t.

  • bloodiOS

It would be good if it’s a Kinect-less model but disc-less?! That’s just silly xD

  • BizarreJelly

With the price of digital copies on the xbox live store, you’d have to be an idiot to settle for a disk drive free console.

    • Budgiecat

      Plenty of those….

  • Tac-Mex

And Microsoft is now seeking legal action against the one who leaked all this:

Anyway, i am not getting a bone in a near future

    • Gariya

      As you should.

    • McPoo

      #thatswhatshesaid lololol

    • AdamBoy64

Does that confirm it? Or come a long way to confirming it?
      Thanks for the link.

  • Vayne

XBox wanting to become Ouya. Will fail.

  • Elvick

If the cheaper model is digital only… good luck MS.

    • Budgiecat

Considering how huge games are nowadays, sounds like a really bad idea if true…

    • Sevyne

If that rumor is true, then I can’t help but laugh myself to tears. The idea of a Kinectless XB1 is like a huge insult to them, but getting rid of the Blu-ray drive? Who needs that, right?! Don’t know wtf they’re smoking.

  • shogunknight

I doubt it would be a kinectless console since it was made to function with it. The discless one is the closest option, but i dont see myself getting that. Not with my current bandwidth. Wonder how cheaper it would be, $400? or $450. Either way, it may still be difficult to convince gamers that arent willing to buy it, we will see how this goes

  • badmoogle

These news will hurt current sales even more although i don’t think there is even one person who wasn’t expecting a price drop to come soon.Personally i expect it around spring (April/May) and to be 100$ less so i’m curious to see if i’ll be wrong or not.:p
Also it will be interesting to see if MS will continue offering Kinect in the same package (in order to have a supposed advantage against Sony) or sell it separately.

  • MrRobbyM

Smart move. It’s one of the key factors holding back the X1. Even if they do manage to cut the price by $100, I still don’t see it outselling the PS4, at least not by much. I think it’s a little too late for Microsoft to take over like they did last gen, but I can see both the PS4 and the X1 doing about equal this gen.

I was all against the X1 a month or two ago, but I can see MS is trying to turn things around, so if they can get a price drop and more games that interest me, I might consider buying one.

    • Budgiecat

We need to find out more about this before you jump the gun and consider it a smart move

      • MrRobbyM

True. I was speaking somewhat hypothetically though. It’d be a smart move if they drop the Kinect. Any other option would be useless.

        • Budgiecat

But their ego about the Kinect and its marketing point they wouldnt want to kill. The XB1 is marketed as an all around unit for sports/TV/game dudebros so removing that would mean that it wasn’t as special as they thought it was and more people would avoid buying the Kinect even if sold seperately, thus making manufacturing them a wasteful expense and at a loss…

          • MrRobbyM

I find it hard for MS dropping the Kinect as well, but I still think there’s a chance they will. Almost no games support it and the ones that do don’t work that well, from what I hear. Even Ryse pretty much abandoned it and left it as a gimmicky way to control some aspects of the game. I think MS needs to realize that if they want to expand, there needs to be a cheaper model. How they go about that, we’ll just have to wait and see.

            • AdamBoy64

I hope you’re right – a cheaper model without Kinect would be great. It’d be win-win.

More money in your pocket, and you don’t end up with a device the majority (the majority of us here, that is) don’t want.

          • shogunknight

I doubt there would be a kinectless xbox ever, its probably going to be an all digital console. They have been talking about the power of the cloud so this is how they prove it. The company is probably worried due to the sales difference between it and its competitor

            • MrRobbyM

See, I’m doubtful of that considering the backlash they got from the all-digital nonsense back when it was announced. Sure, there’d be a much more expensive model that supports physical media, but that’d get a lot of people riled up. I can see them keeping the Kinect if they actually plan to use it to it’s full potential in more than a handful of games. Thus pioneering camera and voice controllable games.

              • shogunknight

The problem is that those policies were probably just removed temporarily, they did say some of the policies would come back. And since they already have an xbox1 that uses discs, they might as well just release the version they intended in the first place. As for the kinect, its being focused on by the company almost way more than the gamepad feature on wiiU.

                • MrRobbyM

Can’t argue with them using the Kinect more than Ninty is using the gamepad. Which I find funny since I find the gamepad being much more useful than the Kinect.

    • Wolf Star

So far MS has good games for now but I really love to have a physical copy of the disc and a lowered price for the console that would sell big. I might considering buying one but still being $499 that’s pricy to me.

      • MrRobbyM

So far, the X1 doesn’t have any exclusive games that interest me other than the Gears game we haven’t seen anything of. But I know MS will eventually get enough exclusives to warrant a purchase from me. All they gotta do is keep up the good *behavior* and get a nice price drop. But I’m still planning to buy a PS4 and a Vita before I ever consider an X1.

All that is considering they continue to support physical copies of games with this rumored new model. I can see the advantages of digital(if tied to an account forever), but neither Sony nor MS are really handling digital game prices correctly, imo. If I’m paying the same price for a digital game when the physical is the same price, why would I not have the advantage of taking the game wherever I go and selling it however I want? The only reason I ever buy digital is if it cost considerably less than a physical copy and believe me, I check every website out there to see if I can get a cheaper physical copy.

Kinda went on a rant there, sorry lol.

        • Wolf Star

Lol it’s alright :) also I agree with what your saying. I didn’t buy Xbox One because it was waaay to much for a price to me. I already got Ps4 and I love it!! :D plus they are announcing more Ps4 games left and right. Plus a PS Vita which is a good system. Xbox one is lacking of exclusives and I agree with you on that one. I don’t want to play one game just for X1. While many good games and coming are on Ps4. Hell if MS screws up more. they already have done enough at it is. Then I’m never going to buy X1. Even if it’s a good game. I was tricked once and I’m not falling for it again. (Sorry for my rant)

        • McPoo

Microsoft have said recently they’re looking into pricing digital games more competitively. If they get a good pricing system going, I’d consider an xbox one without the disc drive.

That said, I doubt much will change in prices. It’d be nice if they did, as I imagine Sony would want to follow suit.

    • AdamBoy64

Yeah, it’s a great move by Microsoft.
They’re getting aggressive with their strategy.

I think the PS3 overtook the X360 years into last gen, so I think anything could still happen here.

  • Budgiecat

Microsoft buckling faster than Nintendo did only after 3 months? This is odd

    • gekitsu

well, they sold a box at lots of moneys to everyone whod pay that price for it.

where can you go from there?

  • Wolf Star

if this rumor becomes true.. Well what happens if a game is on the disc only that will never come to XBL. well that means you can’t never play that game you always wanted, unless you buy another Xbone with disc or borrow it from your friend. Still the price is cheap which they should’ve done that from the start.

    • Bobby Jennings

Yeah exactly and for Microsoft this really isn’t a good move. They don’t push to release day-one digitals like Sony does.

I could see this working for Sony but for Microsoft its a mixed bag

      • Wolf Star

I’ll be surprised that if that became true and people bought X1 disc less. Because it’s cheap. lol still you have to deal with Kinect (yeah I know it’s optional) also with 500 GB storage. Oh boy the hard drive is going to fill up fast. Plus you can’t change hard drives on Xbone. While on Ps4 you can. Idk how many games will even be on XBLA?? On Xbox 1.. MS doesn’t do day one.. idk how will it work out >_<

  • Fango

    Buy a ps4 and still save $100!

  • HighBrowDrifter

Cheaper does not mean better….try harder.

    • Blaz

But it means more costumers it’s a nice move.

      • HighBrowDrifter

Customers huh?….After what Micronats pulled last year, I feel sympathy for those who actually consider/had purchasing/purchased an Xbox One.

I would have more respect for Micronats if they would have had respected their customers with more dignity…..I am not saying Sony or Nintendo are completely innocent, but what Micronats has done is irredeemable imo.

  • icup ✔️

it will come without a controller and a storage drive but will be cable tv ready out of the box.

    • Budgiecat

      I thought it was a cable box/VCR

  • zerolegacy0

Unless it’s a 100$ drop I don’t think it will make much of a difference, and if they go the disc-less route I can’t see that selling well. Going with a 100$ drop and losing the Kinect would be their best bet at competing at this point.

Also Sony can drop their price by as little as 50$ and still sell more consoles. They are in the perfect position to counter just about anything Microsoft can throw at them.

  • blank059

They need to drop the kinect and give us rechargeable batteries with the controller.

  • miyamoto

Another Damage Control move from M$

  • AdamBoy64

The X1 in white looks fantastic.
And yes, a price drop is going to help them sell units. Absolutely.

  • AlphaSixNine

Maybe I’ll buy one no– nah.
Still no games I’m interested in too so… yeah.

  • veniks

How about releasing the normal Xbox One first in my country?
Why is it still not available in the Netherlands… It is so strange
