Pretty low numbers for 3ds, seems like kirby didn’t attract new people to their base. also, good hold for the vita, keep it there or go higher please

    • OlimacFTW

Buddy, you are truly delusional. Even with the massive drop for all consoles, 3DS still sold better, and yet you expect Vita to sell more than that in the upcoming weeks? Keep dreaming.

    • xytherion

i’m not, but i’m hoping it will. i’m an owner of both handhelds and i’m hoping for the best of both. yes 3ds sold better, but my argument lies with kirby bringing new 3ds owners.

  • Gariya

    • jujubee88

The VITA is at legendary status at this point. NO DOUBT!

  • PrinceHeir

    let’s go Vita!

  • crimsonidol

AAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNND everything back to normal. Good to see that the Vita still stays around 30k units, though. :)

BTW: Wii removed from the charts?
I know they aren’t produced anymore for the Japanese market but I’m still surprised.

    • Anime10121

If they are no longer produced and have sold all available stock, there would be no new Wii sales to chart…

  • Vayne

Useless to try to push the VITA to stay on top if have no games that appeals to the Japanese. 3DS is superior to VITA games in question.

    • sherimae1324

hope this useless comment gets erased,,

      • kurosan9712

        But he’s actually right.
There aren’t too much games for Vita that appeal to japanese audience.
Anime-VN never sell much, because each of them appeals to a different group, thus it won’t become a system seller(at least in big numbers).
Most of other games are ports and remakes, which won’t become a big system seller as well. The games will be bought, but just a small number of consoles will be bought just for them.
The Vita exclusive games are so rare that becoming system sellers is pretty much impossible.
All the good games are multi-platform with PS3 and, maybe, PSP or something else, thus it is REALLY useless to try to push Vita to stay on top, unless Sony/others will produce a lot of quality exclusive games.

Which comes to the pretty obvious conclusion, that 3DS IS superior to Vita, in both games and sales and perspectives.

        • Budgiecat

This was the same argument for the PSP back in 2005…..

        • Eder García

the Japanese are buying the Vita just for the PS4/Vita cross play, the games will eventually come imo.

          • jujubee88

YS IV and all the good past and upcoming JRPG’s say hi!

            • kurosan9712

Oh, and did Ys IV remake make a system seller for more than 100k people? The answer is no. Most of people who bought it in Japan probably already had a Vita.

          • kurosan9712

I seriously doubt any reasonable human being would buy a console for crossplay. No, seriously, it’s just a waste of money

  • shogunknight

Aw no wiiU went down so bad. So it was just a holiday bump, quite unfortunate. Vita down too but its ok

  • kirby755

Kirby Will eat the most Sales. XD

  • XypherCode

    Huge drops there.

  • British_Otaku

Kirby did pretty well for one of the slowest weeks of the year. Youkai Watch is outselling tons of 3DS releases which were actually released close to Christmas is cool and it seems One Piece lost it’s legs and Attack on Titan is here to stay even if it is currently behind Inazuma Eleven in sales.

How well the platforms have done isn’t too surprising…

  • Stealth

3ds is the only system selling well.

    • icecoffemix

It’s YTD is down 30% though, in a year where Pokemon AND MH4 got released no less.

      • Stealth

it doesnt matter what its YTD is. Thats a statistic that means little.

3ds has been first place all year with no competition.

        • icecoffemix

It sorta does if you want to talk about sales, and “first place” is the meaningless talk, it has no real meaning to anyone outside fans war without attaching hard number to it.

Anyway, I’m only stating fact, I have no interest in discussing what is first second last etc. So carry on.

          • British_Otaku

The most meaningful place to start is probably whether they are making money on every console sold (probably all platforms currently are) then are they selling a lot of games.

The 3DS has these covered regardless of whether the first place lead is impressive as last year or not. One Piece isn’t a failure for not selling nearly 38 million (2011) in 2013, 18 million is still a monster, the rest of the merchandise is selling great. You are right that first place isn’t the end all though, the best selling game in the week could sell 100K and have expectations around 3 million.

            • icecoffemix

Of course they’re making money, I never even said that they’re not. However it’s a worrying trend if it keep on.

3DS is safe for the generation though.

              • Stealth

The bottom line is Vita is only on pace to sell 10% of what the PSP did in Japan

                • Luna Kazemaru

                  why are you starting this?

                  • Six

                    Because he is a faaaaaanboy.

                    • Stealth

It has nothing to do with being a fanboy. Wii U is not selling well. The only hardware selling even remotely respectable in Japan is the 3DS. Thats a fact

                  • Stealth

I didnt start anything, I voiced my opinion on the numbers, not responding to anyone else.

                  • Budgiecat

Because they are multi million dollar game company investors and stock analysts….

                • icecoffemix

That’s okay, the software support is still strong anyway (which is what really matter in the end for end-user). OTOH, none of 3DS game really appeal to me.

              • British_Otaku

I guess, it could be a worrying trend if it continues at a severe degree, but it is the furthest system right now from crashing and burning and probably got it good for the generation as you said even if it hits sales saturation in Japan fast.

Each of the consoles this generation are on more shaky feet and even them may look promising later like the PS3 did, or it won’t even matter like for the N64/GC which did much less than prior systems or the competition but sold for a profit and had a great library in the long run.

        • mirumu

I’d argue YTD is the more important stat than who’s on top as it’s a measure of the general health of the industry. I don’t say this to put down the 3DS at all, pretty much everything is down compared to last year and the aggregate numbers are down.

If this downward trend keeps up game developers may soon be struggling even more than they are now. It’s a worrying trend.

      • Nick Pantazis

He’s wrong, because the Vita is doing pretty solid this week, but you are wronger, because what you posted is a complete falsehood. The 3DS sold 5.1 million in Japan in 2013, down just 7% from the 5.5 million it sold in 2012. This is not only not a “worrying trend” but far better than the average decline seen for a platform in its second full year. WIth a price drop and the 2DS hitting in 2014, it’s set to perform quite well over the coming 12 months.

PS: The 3DS was actually up 2% globally for 2013, while Vita was down 15% for 2013.

        • icecoffemix

Where did you get your japanese and global data from? And I said YTD not year 2013. smh.

          Here’s Japan data

7% drop is peculiar in the year the system got its two of the biggest game and many millions seller.

Oh and by the way, on NA its software sales doesn’t even match PSP for the same period let alone DS

          • Nick Pantazis

The 2013 sales are from VGChartz, which I’m aware isn’t super accurate on its own sales data but just pulls from media create for Japanese sales so it’s a good way to get congregated data.

I apologize, I had just assumed no one would be silly enough to try to measure YTD sales in 2014 off of literally one week of data. That’s pretty insane, and a ridiculous measure of success considering the 3DS was riding on the November release of Animal Crossing last holiday through January, while Pokemon was released a full month earlier in 2013 (in early October), meaning the sales boost was dying down by last week. And yes, they are franchises of comparable selling power.

2012 was just as big a year as 2013 for the 3DS in software, and included Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros, and Super Mario 3D Land. So no, a 7% drop is within normal market fluctuation levels. It’s also logical with the Vita doing so much better in 2013 than 2012 that a few of those sales came at the expense of 3DS sales (in Japan specifically of course).

As for the 3DS vs DS, it would be silly for anyone to suggest it will do better than the DS long-term. That ship sailed when people started playing games on phones. As for the 3DS vs PSP, the PSP never did as bad as the fanboys claimed, nor was piracy nearly as rampant as it was even on the DS. Piracy was always a silly excuse for sales loss, despite studies showing most pirates wouldn’t buy full-priced software under any circumstance.

  • TheExile285

Good sales for Kirby TD. TheExile is pleased.

  • bloodiOS

Hmm, I did expect a huge drop after the holidays, but I didn’t expect the Wii U to drop that low. And people are still buying PSP…

    • Aiddon

well that’s just January for you; in fact, the drops have been getting a LOT sharper over the years.

  • TheGameTagerZ
    • shogunknight

Was, have you finished the game already?

      • TheGameTagerZ

Yeah I bought it on the nintendo japan eshop the hour it came out. That’s the whole playthrough.

  • SuperLuigi

Imagine if kirby came out before the holiday…

  • epy

    … There’s a new Kirby game?

  • Solomon_Kano

    Go Kirby!

  • Six

Look at that Xbox 360 go!

  • Eder García

i was expecting a Vita momentum shift, but not too soon. maybe the PS4/Vita cross-play is helping. 3DS sales will be dormant in the next months, idk what are the upcoming 3DS games in Japan.
WiiU…. at least is going to outsell the 360 there. but is coming back to below 10k per week which is worrying.
lets see what kind of legs AoT has. also GTA is officially the only American game Japan needs like Final Fantasy is the only Japanese game America needs

  • LustEnvy

Healthy numbers for the Vita. And OF COURSE all sales go down. The holidays are over.

  • Elvick

    dat hardware drop
